So, are you guys ready for our God's Grace is Greater segment?
Welcome back.
If you guys are tuning in newly, this is our God's Grace is Greater segment where we're going to dive deep into the Scripture today.
We're looking at a piece of Scripture out of the book of Luke, right?
So we've gone and started Luke chapter 2.
We're doing all the major Gospels.
We started Matthew.
We went through Matthew.
We've gone through Mark.
And now we're in Luke.
And now what we're doing is we're in Luke chapter 2, picking up at verse 40.
And we're going to read the rest of the chapter to talk about this portion where we learn a little bit about Jesus' younger life before he went on to preach as an adult and what happened to him as a child that is documented by Luke who is a doctor who does this incredible job at giving us a thorough documentation of Jesus' life and this is one of the few accounts Of Jesus' life between when he was born
in a manger in Bethlehem and when he started preaching as an older adult in Nazareth and all throughout the land there in Jerusalem.
And I think this is amazing and I'm very thankful to share these verses with you.
So let's go ahead and jump right in to this verse right here.
Okay, so, in his father's house, this is verse 41 in Luke chapter 2, and we're going to read all the way to the end.
It says...
Every year his parents traveled to Jerusalem for the Passover festival.
When he was 12 years old, they went up according to the custom of the festival.
After those days were over, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it.
Assuming he was in the traveling party, they went on a day's journey.
Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends.
When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him.
After three days they found him in the temple complex, sitting among the teachers, listening to them, and asking them questions.
And all those who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers.
When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, Jesus replied, We're good to go.
So I love these verses because there's a lot of power in them.
It talks about Jesus as this youth, as he was essentially becoming a man in the Jewish faith.
He went for the Passover festival in Jerusalem, which was a custom for all men to do when they were brought into their church.
They're from childhood into manhood.
Jesus was no different.
He went to Jerusalem to participate in these Passover festivals.
Now, what's interesting to note is that they were traveling by probably caravan, which means there were a lot of people in it.
So it's not like his parents left and didn't realize he was standing next to them.
Usually the women and children would go ahead of the men, and there would be a separation enough so that the women and children who were slower would go ahead first and the men would follow thereafter.
And this gave enough room for Jesus to somehow slip away and to go into the temple complex in Jerusalem to study with the rabbis there who were teaching them.
Now, what's fascinating is that during these Passover ceremonies, what would happen is the teachers, the rabbis there, would get together and they would question things about the law and discuss and debate and have these very, very articulate conversations about the scripture and what it means and their interpretation.
What we learn from this account from Luke is that when Jesus went there and was found, what it tells us is that he was found in the temple complex among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions, and that all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers.
So this is showing us that God's divine nature and power had and was in Jesus all the way back, not only from when he was a baby, and it was told to us by Gabriel the angel of what was to come from him as the child, and not only as an adult, but as that in-between period, he was understanding these things at a level which most people were amazed by.
And that is just another indicator that Jesus was doing these great things.
Now, what's fascinating is that parents still don't understand, I guess...
The entirety of Jesus' life and what it would end up being because they'd only been told essentially by Gabriel the angel and his prophetic pronouncement about Jesus that he would go on to do great things and he would be the son of God and that he would be essentially the Messiah.
But I don't think they even understood what that meant at that moment.
So that's why although Joseph, his father, was silent at the time, His physical father, who took care of him, even though his father was God in heaven, who basically had the son through Mary.
His father was quiet, but his mother couldn't withhold herself, couldn't keep herself quiet.
She said, why have you treated us like this?
We've been searching for you, right?
Talk about the first, like, home alone, right?
You know, Kevin!
Kevin!
But with Jesus, this is fascinating because they literally come and Jesus' response is this, simple.
Why were you searching for me?
Don't you know that I had to be in my father's house?
Jesus knew who his true father was in heaven.
And even at that age, he was there teaching those around him of God's glory and listening to understand and teaching alongside while asking questions, by asking questions, like he would do later in his ministry as Messiah as an adult.
So...
Then it gives us this brief account of the rest of his life until we pick up later, where it tells us that he was obedient to his parents, that his mother, Mary, kept it all in her heart, understanding more every day what Jesus was really going to be, and who he was, and what he was going to do.
And that Jesus increased in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and with people.
So he did all these great things.
So that, ladies and gentlemen, is where we're going to leave off, but we're going to pick up tomorrow with even more in this incredible story of Jesus Christ and the Gospel of Luke.
So I hope you guys are ready for that.
With that, let's say a prayer and then we'll wrap it up.
Lord and Heavenly Father, we give thanks for all you've given us, Lord.
We pray you'll guide us and give us strength.
We pray that we'll come to understand the story of our Lord and Savior Jesus all the more, and that you'll continue to show us ways to find wisdom and discernment.
Just by reading and learning from the example of our Lord and Savior, we pray we have strength and discernment to overcome this fallen world that surrounds us with evil so much, but that we know and realize in our hearts that we can find our grace through you, and we can find you in our hearts more closely every single day.
We pray for all those watching and listening out there who need you, Lord, right now.
Be with them and be with us all.
We give thanks for all things to you, and most of all, our eternal salvation.
In Jesus' name, amen.
