	I admit...
	I am surprised by how rapidly the Assad regime collapsed.
	It was not the result, primarily, of military pressure from the terrorist fighting of the HTS. Something else was afoot.
	A deal was cut.
	Assad was persuaded to abandon his government and head for Russia.
	I am sure there are campaign courts popping at CIA headquarters in McLean, Virginia, and MI6 in London.
	I think this operation surpassed even their expectations.
	But if the subsequent events had unfolded in Iraq in 2003 and in Libya in 2011, or any guide, the celebration should be tempered with trepidation.
	Why?
	Because HDS is now in charge.
	Instead of bringing peace and reconciliation, HDS will impose strict Sharia law and will punish those guilty of heresy, which means large segments of Syrian society are likely to be purged.
	HDS itself will become a target of terrorism.
	The most likely fate for Syria, at least for the next decade, is chaos and mayhem.

	I believe.
	Here comes.
	So I wanted to get started here with asking you about A phenomenon I have been very curious about and that is, of course we know that the Syrian government has collapsed Bashar al-Assad is now in Moscow.
	One development within this real cataclysmic geopolitical development is that the Syrian quote-unquote rebels, many of them not Syrian, but The rebels that eventually took power led by HTS, they ended up ransacking the Iranian embassy.
	But there's been a lot of suspicions about Russia's role in all of this.
	Some have been asking me, well, was Russia aware of what was going to happen?
	Because the quote unquote rebels didn't mess with the Russian embassy.
	And there have been some asking if there was an understanding by Russia that there would be a transfer of power happening and that perhaps Russia wasn't maybe directly involved but was coordinating so that their interests were not going to be harmed.
	Scott, what do you make of this?
	Because there has been a lot of swirling about exactly what was going on and what role Russia and other regional players allied with Well, first of all, I don't know.
	It's only speculation, so we have to start with that.
	Let's just set the foundation here.
	Russia is in Syria at the invitation of the government of Bashar al-Assad.
	There is no other legitimacy for a Russian presence in Syria, and Russia has no mission other than to support the government of Bashar al-Assad.
	Russia isn't in Syria to save the world, to project military power throughout the Mediterranean, any of that.
	Russia is in Syria because it was invited to Syria to prop up, to stabilize the government of Bashar al-Assad.
	And so we have to put things in that perspective.
	In 2018, Russia apparently approached the government of Bashar al-Assad and said that your military is a total disaster, that it has to be reorganized from the top to the bottom.
	I think the Russians also made some statements about the corruption that exists and is manifest in That is linked to the military.
	Military leaders are corrupt.
	The system is corrupt.
	And that this needed to be reformed as well.
	But mainly from a military standpoint, the Russians found that the Syrian army was not capable of standing on its own.
	I mean, it survived.
	Yes, there were Syrian forces that fought very hard, but they survived because of the Russian Iran and Iranian proxies.
	Russia was rebuffed by Bashar al-Assad, by the Assad government.
	I think the main reason was that the people that Russia was looking to reform were the very people from Syrians that rallied behind Bashar al-Assad and was by his side.
	Assad wasn't in a position to carry out reforms that would disenfranchise Power structures that these people had built, corrupt power structures.
	Keep in mind that Syria is a nation under intense economic sanctions, and the first thing that happens in a country that's sanctioned is the creation of a black market, a black market economy, and a black market mindset, which means that almost everything inside Syria operates outside of the normal framework of law, and it lends itself to corruption.
	And so that took place.
	The other savior of Syria that people are talking about is Iran.
	Well, Iran also at the same time said that if you're not going to reform your military, then we need to come up and prop up your military.
	We need to have a bigger Iranian presence.
	And the Syrian government said no.
	And the Russians were also opposed to that because Russia had had an understanding with Israel that it wouldn't allow The Iranians who came in to help reverse the tide of the anti-government forces that pushed them back, that he wouldn't allow that to turn into a permanent large-scale military presence in Syria that was focused on, you know, Hezbollah and strengthening the axis of resistance there.
	That Russia said, no, Syria will not become a springboard for an Iranian-backed aggression against Israel.
	And so there was There was all this taking place.
	The Russian forces were there to stabilize Syria.
	Every Russian deployment that was made was there to stabilize Syria and many Russian deployments that were made there was therefore to provide force protection for the Russian forces.
	I saw in your comments, somebody asked about the S-400 and why the S-400 wasn't shooting down Israeli airplanes.
	Well, with all due respect, the Syrian government doesn't exist anymore.
	What do you want Russia to defend?
	The S-400s were never there to defend the Syrian government.
	The S-400s, controlled by Russia, were there to defend the Russian resources, the Russian assets.
	When the Syrian government fell, whether Russia agrees with it or not, the Israeli Air Force is there to destroy the military and military industrial infrastructure of Syria to keep it out of the hands of the forces that are taking over.
	So that's what happens.
	It's not Russia's job to do any of the things people want Russia to do.
	It's not their job.
	Russia's job was to come in and help stabilize the situation.
	And Russia did that successfully.
	Lost a lot of guys doing it, too.
	And then Russia said, we want to help reform you, help stabilize you, help restructure so that this is sustainable.
	And Russia was rebuffed.
	That doesn't mean that Russia turned around and betrayed Syria, but Russia has to look out for Russian national interests.
	I want to say, I think Scott Ritter has got it right, and I may have been too hard on Russia the other day, but notice he's mentioning there was an agreement between Russia and Israel not to allow Iran into Syria.
	That is very, very bad.
	That troubles me tremendously.
	The consequences have been enormous.
	Israel unleashes hell across Syria with over 250 airstrikes since the fall of Damascus, reported by The Cradle.

	The Israeli army has systematically targeted all of Syria's military capabilities.

	Israeli strikes included an overnight attack on Palestinians in the southern city of Rafa, who had lined up to buy flour.
	According to Al Jazeera, at least 10 were killed in the strike in central Gaza.
	A significant number of women and children were slaughtered and wounded by Israeli attacks.
	Bodies were piling up at the Alaska Hospital in central Gaza.
	After at least nine from the same family, mostly women and children, were killed by an Israeli strike on the Barajah refugee camp.
	We can take great pride in that.
	This is happening only because America is supporting it.
	Meanwhile, Palestinian women face Face escalating violence in Israeli prisons.
	The Palestinian Commission on Prisoners and Ex-Prisoner Affairs warned that Israel is subjecting female prisoners to increasingly harsh conditions.
	Female Palestinian detainees are facing an escalation of retaliatory and aggressive policies by Israeli authorities in the Damone prison.
	The Palestinian Commission of Prisoners and Ex-Prisoner Affairs has warned.
	In a statement published Sunday, the commission noted the inhumane and unethical treatment the women face along with physical and psychological abuse.
	This is grotesque.
	The commission legal team documented the treatment after visiting the prison where the abuse has intensified.
	The Palestinian women face psychological abuse in the form of rape threats, strip searches, curses, beating, and starvation.
	They're also deprived of basic items like clothes, covers, sanitizers, medicine, feminine hygiene projects, with their health conditions ignored.
	Again, America, take pride.

	Meanwhile, responsible statecraft by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has endured.
	Forget diplomacy.
	For Tel Aviv, it's been increasing military aggression as the default approach to any security problem.
	The retiring United Nations envoy for the Middle East peace process has insightfully identified a major reason the conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians continue to boil and entail widespread death and destruction.
	In a recent interview with the New York Times, Norwegian diplomat Tor Winland criticized the international community for relying on short-term fixes, such as improving quality of life in occupied territory, or diversions such as seeking peace deals between Israel and other Arab states.
	The crescendo of bloodshed during the past year underscores the ineffectiveness of such approaches.
	Needed but not employed was a concerted and sustained diplomatic effort to end the occupation and create a Palestinian state.
	What we have seen, said Wendland, is a failure of dealing with the real conflict, a failure of politics and diplomacy.
	And mark my words with Trump, you're not going to get an improved situation.
	Whereas Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has said, yes, we support a Palestinian state as long as it's outside the borders of Israel.

	I don't really trust Erdogan, but he has said that he wanted to invade Israel.
