Burglar Pretends To Be Plumber

Rick Burkheimer, a man claiming to be hired by Rico Acevedo for repairs, confronted police at Acevedo's home after Acevedo's mother reported an intruder. Despite producing a key that failed to open the door, Burkheimer allegedly brandished a gun and charged officers, leading to his death after they fired shots. The investigation revealed Acevedo is Latino with a violent criminal history released in October 2021, suggesting Burkheimer may have been an imposter attempting to exploit the situation rather than a legitimate worker. Deadly Encounter Inside Home 00:14:09
On December 10th, 2023, officers with the Youngstown Police Department in Ohio were dispatched to investigate a possible break-in.
A concerned mother reported someone inside her incarcerated son's home.
Officers arrived to speak with the individual inside and determine what was actually going on.
What follows is an eerie and deadly encounter.
Hello, officer.
My son lives at the house right there where that mess is that reflector sign.
And I saw a guy coming down his steps, black guy, bald, black coat, went to the back, and he just went back in with a rake or a broom in his hand.
He can't go through the back.
That's never good when a black guy's coming.
Because we nailed it shut.
He's got a break.
But he's got a rake.
He's going to work off.
It looks like it's a bad thing.
My son lives there.
He's in jail.
Okay.
So there's a guy in the house you don't know who he is.
No.
No, no.
Only me and two other people come and we've been cleaning.
Okay.
I'll go find out who he is.
Hey, how are you?
How you doing?
Not bad.
Hey, uh, whose house is this?
Uh, dude, that's his last name.
His name is Anthony.
Anthony.
Yeah.
Okay.
Is he here?
No, he's not here right now.
He should be back.
I think.
I think he might be in jail.
I don't know.
You think he might be in jail?
I think he might be in jail.
Okay.
You don't live here, though.
No.
You work for him?
Yeah.
Did he send you here to work for him?
Yeah.
Okay.
What are you doing for him?
Huh?
He's out there.
He's fixing drywall repairs.
Bathroom look coming and see.
I got plumbing to do.
You know his mother?
Yeah.
No, I don't know her.
I know him.
Wow.
She's down the street.
She came to check on the house and she basically called you in as a burglar.
Really?
You don't look like a burglar to me.
Looks like winning the moon.
I don't know where he's at.
Yeah, he's in jail.
Is he really?
Yeah.
Yeah, that's what she said.
So she's been like hauling up to the curve.
Oh, so you got plumbing or you got all this back here.
He's supposed to be paying.
Do you get paid up front?
He gave me what?
$400 plus $75, $470.
He gave me $35 on top of that.
Wow.
So, how long has he been in?
When's the last time you saw him?
I saw him about maybe a month ago.
Oh, okay.
He's supposed to get help and make it.
With this?
Or other stuff?
This breaks.
Yeah, I just want to go and fix it.
Yeah, I'm going to let her know.
She's right up the street.
And when's the last time she talked to us?
She's coming over right now.
That way, she knows you and you know her and all that.
And when's the last time you talked to your son?
Is he still in jail?
He's doing some work for your son.
What?
He's doing some work for your son.
Yeah, drywall repairs.
Who are you?
Rick.
Rick?
I don't know you.
Rick's drywall.
Huh?
Rick's at drywall.
He's actually working on the house in there.
Yeah.
Come again.
I'm hard to hear him.
He's working on the house.
Your son hired him.
My son hired you?
Yeah.
When did he hire you?
Did he give you a key and everything?
Yeah.
Well, guess what?
We changed the locks.
I don't know.
You don't know?
I have the keys.
I was going to put that new lock snap on this one.
That's not true.
We just changed the locks.
Okay.
We put a brand new thing.
Somebody broke a window the other day, put their hands through there, and tripped the lock, got in, stole seven bikes.
Did you steal the bikes too?
I'm working.
I mean, do you see it?
I saw the change.
I was here yesterday.
That fence was not like that.
He's working on the house.
He's not working on the house.
I just got here this morning.
You see the drywall man?
Are you taking ownership of this house?
No, I'm just trying to help him for money.
He's paying you.
Does he know what he's saying in the jail?
Yes.
Your son paid it.
I'm going to do a good job.
No.
I don't know you from Adam.
Okay, well, if he's... I'll wrap up and be out of here.
As soon as you hear from him, please come.
I want to know how you got in the house if we just changed the lock on the door.
That just happened a few days ago.
No, he's lying.
I'm not lying.
Well, he's working over here, so I've never had a guy break into a house and work on it.
Okay.
Need to ask for that key.
Yeah, no, she keeps saying no, we changed the locks two days ago.
Look like the cop would check on that, right?
Right.
It's okay.
Hey, you got the key?
Show her you have the key.
Yeah.
That'd have been a okay.
Where's the key?
You got the key?
Hey, show her the key.
Yeah.
He's like, well, he says he's working on the house.
He's doing drywall.
Do you have a key for the house?
I'm just trying to help.
Do you have a key for the house?
Okay.
Why doesn't he tell his mother what you told him?
You shouldn't go to jail.
Well, yeah, that would help too.
Whole place is a freaking nightyard.
I mean, good luck.
I swear I had an individual key, though.
Did you have to do this to get in?
No.
I was already gone.
Oh, okay.
But you used the key to get in here today?
Yeah.
Hello.
I assume I was going to put this one on.
So I don't know if that's the key.
I mean, there's all these keys.
You don't know what key it is.
I mean, ask her if she wants to lock it up.
I mean, they have a key.
Well, here's the point.
I didn't do that.
If you came in here and you used the key.
It's here somewhere.
Okay.
I just can work it.
Okay.
I just didn't work it.
Well, if you have a key, it's here.
Stop right here.
I could have swore it was a loose key.
But if you didn't open the door to the key.
It's this one.
I promise you.
I used the key.
Listen, if you didn't, you need to tell me that, okay?
I promise you.
Because he could still have told you to go over there, just pop a window and work on the house.
He could have told you that.
No.
Okay.
Hey, I'm doing drywall work.
I didn't know that she was going to freak out like that.
I mean, who breaks into a house and works on it?
It doesn't even make sense.
I mean, you can see she doesn't know me, but her son does.
I mean, how did I know the last name?
I could have sworn it was.
It's nothing valuable in the house.
I don't see any furniture, no TVs, no nothing.
But she said a burglar broke in the house and stole some bicycles.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Hey, I remember.
Round blacks never relax.

I didn't know that she'd be stopping by.
So he's working or he's working.
All right, he's got a plumbing thing going on upstairs.
He's working on a plumbing.
He's like, yeah, the guy hired me to do it.
He gave me money.
I'm over here.
He's going to owe me money.
She's like, I don't know anything about it.
And she's talking to someone.
I have someone call her.
I thought it was a house down here because they said she's parked in front of the house.
It's over.
Yeah, she's like half a block up.
I'm like, well, she's slugging me down up there.
And I'm like, what the f ⁇ ?
She was like, yeah, he's down the street.
It's a guy.
He keeps coming in and out of the house with a broom.
He's got a plumbing job going up there.
He's cutting drywall out here to patch the hole in the wall, but he can't seem to find the key he has to get in here.
So he is a little screwy.
I give you my word.
He's here somewhere.
I promise you.
He's here.
It's a single key.
Well, Rick, in the meantime, you have some idea on you?
Because I'm going to have to.
Apparently, this is going to be a problem for me in one way or another.
I'm fine with that key.
Okay.
Hurry now.
She's not going to pay.
Well, she don't know who you are, so she sure isn't going to play.
Rick, you got no idea what you're talking about.
All right, what's your name?
Rick.
Yep.
Burk on it.
You gotta spell out for me.
B-U-R-K-I-E-M-E-R.
Your date of birth?
December 23rd, 1982.
You don't have a vehicle here?
No, no.
I'm girlfriend drive me off.
Oh, okay.
I'm just about my toes in.
Rick's drywall is your business?
Me, pretty much.
It's a startup.
Okay, I got you.
I got you.
You probably just started in there.
Let me just, you know, finish the bathroom.
Yeah.
She doesn't know who you are.
I assume she's talking to her son right now.
I'm going to go run this.
Let's see.
Can I show you the key that I have to that door?
Because I have the house key.
Okay.
And there's no way he could have owned that in the house.
He's in it.
When did you talk to him about doing his job?
Okay.
He's working on pipes in the bathroom up by the bathtub.
It's a plumbing job.
I already have a plumber working on that.
He's doing the drywall.
But the plumbing gotta be done first before the drywall.
I'm telling you what I'm looking at.
I don't know.
He says he's working with your son, so I don't know.
Here what she said?
You gotta do the plumbing first before you do the drywall.
Yeah, this is figure out.
Yeah.
I'm gonna run him.
I'm gonna run him.
He was gonna be going to jail.
No, I did not.
Okay.
I mean, I thought he was in jail.
I heard he was, but I thought he was gonna get, you know, get bought out or whatever by now.
I got you.
I mean, nobody breaks in and fixes up a house, dude.
Well, no, not typically.
But you'll be surprised how many times we've actually been on calls like this with people.
They say they're working on houses and they're not.
So I'm not saying that you are.
I'm just saying.
I will say this.
Typically, if someone breaks in and they leave, they don't come back.
Yeah.
Where you live, bud?
Around the corner.
Okay.
You dropped your other key there.
Was that go to your house?
No, this is my key.
Okay.
This is one of the ones that I've got to do.
This dude's got all these keys on him.
This dude's a burglar.
So he talked to the owner of the house a month ago?
Yeah.
Maybe a little over a month ago.
Come do work on the house.
He's in jail.
That's his mom.
She doesn't know he says we don't any kind of work here or whatever.
We're just trying to confirm that that's what's going on.
So.
Whatchie have you doing?
Plumbing repair upstairs.
Is it inside of the house?
Is it eccentric?
Is he outside of the house?
You want to come see?
She's all the work she can get done on this house.
For her to throw me out.
So what are you staying here while you work?
No, I just gotta drop off the floor.
Your story is consistent.
Remember that.
What's your date of birth?
1223, 1982.
Mm-hmm.
That doesn't come back to anybody named Burkheimer.
So, I'm gonna try it again or...
Come here, that's what it is.
Okay.
You're inside somebody else's house.
You're giving me information that doesn't match to a person.
Do you understand where I'm coming from?
I don't know.
Okay.
Tell you what, turn around and grab the wall.
Turn around and grab the wall.
Come on.
I mean, what did I do?
Turn around and grab the wall.
For what?
I didn't do anything.
I came to work.
Like I said, turn around, grab the wall.
Grab the wall.
Back door.
Stop.
I have a donkey.
So do I.
I have a donkey.
Stop.
Code zero.
Stop.
You toss that gun on the ground right now.
I will f ⁇ ing ventilate your ass.
Toss that gun down.
No.
Toss it.
Toss the gun.
How is the cops wrong?
You run it from the cops and you tell the cops you gotta go.
How is the cops wrong?
It's like this whole stuff is just like crazy.
Rico?
Yes.
Do not f this up.
You understand me?
I don't care.
I understand you don't care.
I'm just trying to make some fing money.
My farm's just died.
Okay.
I'm not doing this anymore.
Alright.
The truth is I'm that is in jail.
Okay.
And he told you his house is empty.
He told me to come do some work on the house.
Okay.
So why are you doing this right now?
Because I want to make money.
Well, a phone call can straighten that shit up.
Why are you doing this right now?
Because I don't trust the police.
Oh, okay.
Well, trust this.
Toss that fing gun down there.
This is going to end very badly for you.
I don't care.
Okay.
I know where I'm going.
I expect a lot of horsemen.
Trust this.
You ever shoot somebody?
Yep.
Gotcha.
At least three times.
You understand?
Yep.
You're going to cough.
Give me that one.
I never did understand that.
What?
You shot somebody multiple times.
I'm thinking I see somebody bodily fluids on the ground.
Why would you handcuff them?
Those are life-threatening.
Hey, what I say earlier.
Never relax around blacks.
Yeah, but just...
No, I want to say that policy.
Well, that's a good policy.
I mean, I've seen cops shoot somebody headshots.
And they go up to the person and put them in handcuffs.
Yeah, that doesn't make any sense.
That don't make any sense.
Yeah.
Affirmative radio.
Notify the office.
Aggravated Violence and Warrants 00:02:44
Send a 55.
Okay?
Good?
Okay.
All right.
102, I am on scene.
Let's keep this traffic to a minimum.
Alright, the ECO5, just don't put it over here.
Just get there.
Burger in progress.
Yeah, came in as a burglar.
Okay.
Traveler in progress.
The signal one out of the house.
The signal one.
Did we clear the rest of the house?
No.
No.
Clear the rest of this house.
Yeah, you're not breathing anymore.
We gotta get fucking sick inside.
Is there anything?
Any other pieces of evidence here with the camera?
The shellcases back here.
We picked up a gun.
Where's the gun?
I haven't touched it.
This ain't his first radio.
No, I know, but.
What is this guy thinking?
He didn't want to go to jail.
Yeah.
He said, if you lied about another layer, you're going to shoot me.
I'm not going back to jail.
What the f ⁇ ?
That's what he had.
He's going to spur.
Is that what he had?
Yeah.
I had to go back to the bottom.
Martinez wanted to debate me.
When I say send another finger, I mean send another finger off.
That doesn't mean ask 15 questions.
I don't think he heard you because you kind of came over broken.
This one.
Right now we got the answer.
Yeah, I used to do.
Okay, very crafted.
He was also a very crazy pro boxer.
Really?
Yeah, you would have a hard time taking him.
He was a one punch.
His story was probably legit.
He probably has a warrant, which is why he didn't want to give his girlfriend.
He wasn't great at MMA.
He was divided.
I saw him lay somebody for a while.
I saw him lay some PSW that didn't be the alleged professional.
That guy.
Just keep it clear for the paramedics so that they're in whatever they need.
The suspect, Rico Acevedo, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Although officers believed he was armed, no firearm was recovered.
He had charged at them while brandishing a tool that resembled a pistol.
His criminal history included a 2015 domestic violence case involving his ex-girlfriend, where he was charged with domestic violence, felonious assault, aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery, and violating a protective order.
Though he faced up to 40 years, he accepted a plea deal and served six.
He was released in October 2021 and remained under state supervision at the time of his death.
Well, I gotta apologize.
I was incorrect.
He wasn't black.
He was Latino.
Well, he's black passing.
That's all you need.
