When it comes to criminal justice and public safety policies, Sacramento's really lacking good data.
17 years as an elected district attorney in California, I've seen policies, new laws passed in California based on no data, but just an emotional argument.
And sometimes data which comes from very doubtful sources in my opinion, not official sources.
2022, there was a bill working its way through the California legislature.
And there was a debate as to whether or not this bill, which would have created essentially a zero bail path in California, should pass or not.
One of the lawmakers on the floor was an assembly member.
He held up our study and he cited statistics from the study that showed that zero bail was resulting in a 70% recidivism rate.
And he talked about the details.
It was very compelling.
And other lawmakers ended up voting no on the bill.
And so we considered that an important win based on the data.
And again, you know, the reason we did the study was we felt it was imperative for policymakers, for lawmakers and the public to see the data, just the hard, cold facts. |
