Fauci's Emails reveal he knew about gain-of-function research | Facts Matter
| Copy link to current segment

Time Text
Good evening, and happy June 4th, the 32nd anniversary where absolutely nothing happened at Tiananmen Square.
Now to start with, over 800 pages of Dr.
Fauci's emails, which is about 3,200 emails spanning the course of six months, well, they were recently made public.
And these emails, they reveal quite a few things, such as Dr.
Fauci's opinion on the efficacy of masks, as well as his knowledge of some potentially dangerous research that was happening over at the Wuhan Virology Lab, the same lab that he was funding.
Let's go through some of these emails together, and then afterwards, we can discuss a little bit about a few developments that are happening with the election audit over in Arizona.
Let's get started.
This is your daily Facts Matter update, and I'm your host, Roman, from the Epoch Times.
Now, before we dive into these emails from Dr.
Fauci, I would like to take a quick moment And tell you that right there at the top of the description box is a link to Epic TV, our brand new no-censorship video platform where you can find all of the awesome Epic Times programs like the Larry Elder Show, Crossroads with Joshua Phillip, American Thought Leaders, China in Focus, Life and Times, and our show Facts Matter.
And on there you will find exclusive episodes that you cannot find here on YouTube.
So again, that link will be right there at the top of the description box.
Hope you click on it.
Hope you check it out.
And now let's really talk about Dr.
Fauci's emails.
So to start with, thanks to a Freedom of Information Act request from BuzzFeed News, we now have access to thousands of Dr.
Fauci's emails for most of the year 2020.
And these emails are fairly revealing, to say the least.
To start with, let's talk a little bit about masks.
And to begin with, let's start with this email right here.
It was sent from Dr.
Fauci on February 5th of last year to Ms.
Sylvia Burwell, who is the president of American University, and she was traveling at the time.
And here's how Dr.
Fauci advised her on mask wearing in his email.
Sylvia, masks are really for infected people to prevent them from spreading infection to people who are not infected, rather than protecting uninfected people from acquiring infection.
The typical mask you buy in the drugstore is not really effective in keeping out virus, which is small enough to pass through the material.
It might, however, provide some slight benefit in keeping out gross droplets if someone coughs or sneezes on you.
I do not recommend that you wear a mask, particularly since you are going to a very low-risk location.
Your instincts are correct.
Money is best spent on medical countermeasures such as diagnostics and vaccines.
Likewise, here is another email, also from the same month in 2020, in February, that Dr.
Fauci sent to a Greek reporter, saying that the vast majority of people outside of China do not need to wear a mask.
A mask is more appropriate for someone who is infected than for people trying to protect against infection.
And around the same time, if you remember, Dr.
Fauci, he publicly stated that the general public should not be walking around wearing a mask, which seems to be consistent with the emails that he was sending privately.
However, if you remember, back on April 3rd of last year, Dr.
Fauci, as well as several other officials at the federal level, they reversed their earlier guidance and recommended that everyone, meaning the American general public, should wear masks whenever they leave their homes.
Back then, they said that this change was because of new research, which indicated that a significant portion of COVID patients did not have symptoms but could still be spreading the virus.
And furthermore, Dr.
Fauci publicly stated later on that the reason that he told Americans to not wear masks in early 2020, back when he was sending those private emails, was not because they didn't work, but rather because there was a lack of supply at the time.
And he said that he was worried that healthcare workers, meaning frontline healthcare workers, would not have access to N95 masks if everyone in America were to go out and buy them.
In fact, here's what he said during an interview just a few months back.
We were concerned, the public health community, and many people were saying this, were concerned that it was at a time when personal protective equipment, including the N95 masks and surgical masks, were in very short supply.
However, there does seem to be an inconsistency there, because at the very same time that he was telling the public to not wear masks, he was also privately emailing people, telling them that they should not be wearing masks either.
And so, it does seem to be the case that he was advising people against mask wearing not because of a lack of supply, which is the official narrative, but rather because he seems to really have believed that they were not effective.
Now, it might be the case that he changed his mind later on, but there is still an inconsistency there.
So that was on the topic of masks.
The other question that is really worth delving into, and that the email shed some light on, is whether the virus came from a lab in Wuhan.
And if so, how much of that did Dr.
Fauci know about?
And even furthermore, how much of it was he himself involved in?
So to start with, in case you don't know, the city of Wuhan is home to China's only P4-level virology lab.
And P4 is the highest level of biosafety.
And so essentially, this lab in Wuhan is the highest level virus lab in all of China.
And coincidentally, it's located right up the street from the Wuhan wet market, which of course is where the public was told that the virus originated from.
Furthermore, we know that the Wuhan Virology Lab was conducting gain-of-function research on coronaviruses.
And gain-of-function research means, essentially, that the scientists there were working to manipulate these viruses in order to make them more transmittable to humans and more lethal.
Now one question that's worth asking is whether Dr.
Fauci of the NIH, which is the National Institute of Health, sent any American tax dollars to fund this research in Wuhan.
And this is exactly where the story gets quite interesting.
That's because publicly, and just recently, Dr.
Fauci very strongly defended sending hundreds of thousands of dollars from our NIH to China's Wuhan Institute of Virology.
And so, as we just mentioned, since this lab in Wuhan was conducting gain-of-function research, Who's to say that this money, this American taxpayer money that was sent by Dr.
Fauci's NIH, was not being used for that purpose?
Well, according to testimony from Dr.
Fauci that he gave in front of a House subcommittee just last week, he said that this was not the case.
And instead, he said that this $600,000 grant was to study the animal-human interface, to do surveillance, and to determine if these bat viruses were even capable of transmitting infection to humans.
So that statement from Dr.
Fauci was made on last Tuesday, and then the next day, which was on Wednesday, Dr.
Fauci was further pressed on the matter at a Senate hearing.
That was when Senator John Kennedy, who is from Louisiana, he asked Dr.
Fauci this question.
To which Dr.
Fauci replied, you never know.
Well, as reassuring as that answer was, there is a lot more to this story.
For instance, Rand Paul, who is a senator from Kentucky, and he's the one that's spearheading the push to investigate the origins of this pandemic, he recently said during an interview with Fox News that the amount of money that was sent to the Wuhan lab added up, over a period of time, to be millions of dollars.
And then he added this.
But the other thing Dr.
Fauci said was that there was no gain of function in the application.
There are scientists who looked at the application and who absolutely and categorically disagree with him.
The other evidence that we have is Dr.
Schur from the Wuhan lab published a paper that is clearly about gain-of-function, and in there she thanks her group and Dr.
Fauci for funding that paper.
So there are a lot of contradictions going on.
And so to recap here for a second, Dr.
Fauci publicly defended sending large amounts of money to the Wuhan lab.
He admits that he's not sure they are not using this money for gain-of-function research.
And then you have one of the lead scientists in this Wuhan lab, Dr.
Schur, publish a paper on gain-of-function, and in that paper, she thanks Dr.
Fauci for funding it.
And as interesting as all that is, well, we now have access to Dr.
Fauci's emails.
Let's, in fact, go through some of them.
This one here that you see on screen was from January 31st, and it was sent to Dr.
Fauci from a man named Christian Anderson, who is an immunologist over in California.
And among several other things, he mentions that the virus appears to have been manipulated in a lab.
Here's specifically what part of that email says.
The unusual features of the virus make up a really small part of the genome, less than.1%, so one has to look really closely at all the sequences to see that some of the features potentially look engineered.
So then, on the very next day, Dr.
Fauci responded to Christian by saying this, Thanks, Christian.
Talk soon on the call.
However, on that very same day that he sent the response, Dr.
Fauci also sent an email to his deputy, which read this.
And also notice that the subject line of the email is just the word important.
Then the email itself says, It is essential that we speak this AM. Keep your cell phone on.
And then it goes on to say, Read this paper as well as the email that I will forward to you now.
You will have tasks today that must be done.
And then, in terms of which paper he's referring to, right there at the top of the email, you can see the file name of the attachment.
It's called Beric Schur et al.
naturemedicine.sars.gainoffunction.pdf.
Now, we don't have access to that PDF, but there's a lot that we can learn just from its name.
Very likely, the name Beric referred to Ralph Beric, who is an American immunologist.
And then the name Schur in that file likely refers to Dr.
Schur, who is again the Chinese scientist who works at the Wuhan lab, who published a paper on gain-of-function research in which he thanked Dr.
Fauci for the funding.
And it is exactly these types of emails that are among the treasure trove that have just been released that call into question what exactly Dr.
Fauci knew about the work being done at the Wuhan Virology Lab.
It also led Dr.
Rand Paul to say this...
I think Dr.
Fauci should be made to testify under oath about the money that was given to the lab.
The bottom line, he cannot investigate himself.
If he was responsible for giving this money, he has every incentive to cover it up and not reveal the truth about it because if the pandemic did come from the lab, he would have great culpability in this.
And there are so, so many emails to go through, many of which actually begin to show that the narrative, or rather the real possibility, that the virus leaked out of a lab was consistently suppressed over the past year and a half by government officials.
Now, we here at the Epoch Times, we will continue to dig through these emails and report to you what we find in real time.
And actually, there are more emails that are likely on the way, as Judicial Watch is now filing further Freedom of Information Act requests in order to access more emails from Dr.
Fauci.
Now, if you would like to read some of these emails for yourself, or if you would like to read some of the analysis about them, well, those links will be in the description box below this video for you to check out.
And now, before we move on over to Arizona and give you an update about the election audit going on over in Maricopa County, I would like to take a quick moment and introduce our sponsor for today's episode, and I will do so from the sound booth.
That's right.
The sponsor of today's episode is a very cool company called My Patriot Supply, and they sell emergency food that you can store for the long haul.
I mean, if you live through 2020, you know that one of the first ways that you begin to feel national emergencies yourself, things like lockdowns and riots happening across the country, It's that when you go to the supermarket, the store shelves are empty.
I mean, that's at least what happened to me back in April and May of last year.
When I went to the store, they were out of meat, they were out of fresh produce, and they were out of non-perishable items.
I mean, the only things left on the store shelves were vegan food.
However, it's not even just the lockdowns.
I mean, just a few days ago, JBS, one of the largest meat suppliers in the country, they got hacked.
They got a cyber attack against them.
Now, that got taken care of, but regardless, the...
The time to prepare is now, not when there is an emergency.
And MyPatriotSupply is an awesome company to do that with because they are a company run by patriots.
They've sold to millions of families across America, and they have 40,000 four- and five-star reviews for their products.
And right now, they're offering a special to viewers of Facts Matter.
You can get 25% off a one-month supply of food.
And this one month supply of food will give you 2,000 calories a day when you need it most.
So go on over to, they actually prepared a very cool website, preparewithroman.com.
That's preparewithroman.com.
It'll also be linked in the description box below and check them out.
My Patreon supply, thank you so much for sponsoring this episode.
Now Roman in the studio, back to you.
And now let's head on over to Arizona.
As we've already discussed in several previous episodes, the large-scale audit of the 2020 election over in Maricopa County has officially restarted as of two weeks ago.
And as a part of that audit, the Arizona State Senate is doing a hand recount of 2.1 million ballots.
They're looking for any possible IT breaches that might have occurred, and they're also examining close to 400 tabulation machines which were used during the election.
And as we mentioned in our previous episode, on Wednesday of this week, three lawmakers from Pennsylvania, they went over to Arizona in order to tour the audit, to tour the facilities, and to see how the audit was being conducted.
And now that they've done that, afterwards, after they got this tour, these lawmakers announced that they will go back to Pennsylvania and try to convince the leaders there to conduct a similar audit themselves.
For instance, Christopher Dush, who is one of the Pennsylvania senators who took a tour of the facilities, here's what he told reporters afterwards.
I've never seen anything like it, to be quite honest with you.
It's fantastic.
I'd like to encourage other state legislatures to get down here and take a look at it as well, especially if you've had situations like we experienced in Pennsylvania that really have our citizens in an uproar.
I'm 100% for us having one, and I think our leadership is starting to lean that way.
Furthermore, Doug Mastriano, who is another Pennsylvania senator who toured the facilities, he also announced his support for Pennsylvania to conduct a similar audit.
Here's what he said.
I'm not about overturning anything.
I'm just trying to find out what went right, what went wrong, and how do we have better elections in the future?
He further noted that a recent poll showed that 40% of voters in Pennsylvania have concerns about the integrity of the elections.
Here's what he added: "For the sake of our constitutional republic, and for the sake of people's peace of mind, let's just do it.
Let's pick a few counties and put people's minds at rest." Now according to Senator Mae Striano, in order for the Pennsylvania audit to actually take place, it would need the support from a majority of the Pennsylvania legislature.
And so, in order to see which way the political winds are blowing, we here at the Epoch Times, we reached out to Brian Cutler, who is the Pennsylvania House Speaker, he's a Republican, and a spokesperson for his office got back to us, and they noted that Mr.
Cutler recently introduced legislation which would establish a Bureau of Election Audits over in Pennsylvania.
They also noted that the House Speaker had previously pushed for an independent audit of the 2020 election, albeit unsuccessfully.
Now, the other leaders in Pennsylvania, they did not get back to us immediately for a comment.
We're still waiting to hear back from them.
However, at the very least, we know that the House Speaker is interested in pushing for an audit out in Pennsylvania.
Now, back to Arizona, in terms of an update, there has not been much over the last two days.
Thus far, as of the latest update from the audit liaison, Ken Bennett, he said that a few days ago, the audit has now been halfway done, meaning that half of the ballots have been recounted, and that is about over one million ballots that have now been completed.
However, one interesting development that is worth noting is that Katie Hobbs, who is Arizona Secretary of State and a very vocal critic of the audit, she has just announced her candidacy for the Arizona governor.
She will be running for the Democrat nomination in 2022, so next year.
During the video that she made in which she announced her intention to run, she referenced her opposition to the election audit as one of her selling points.
So, for instance, during her speech where she announced her candidacy, she said that while she is the type of leader who can get the job done, the state is currently being led by conspiracy theorists who are more focused on political posturing than getting things done.
The other side isn't offering policies to make our lives better.
They are offering conspiracies that only make our lives worse.
Now, when she says conspiracies, that's likely a reference to the ongoing election audit.
However, the Republican Governors Association, they told us here at the Epoch Times that voters out in Arizona, they will likely be able to see through what they called Katie Hobbs' phony talk and instead recognize the radical liberal views that she truly represents.
Here's what they told us in a statement.
Running for governor is nothing like Katie Hobbs' softball MSNBC interviews.
Arizonans re-elected Governor Ducey for his responsible vision for the state and his ability to keep the economy roaring, and they are going to select another Republican in 2022 to continue what he started.
Now, regardless of whether Katie Hobbs will win the race or not, the current Arizona governor, Republican Doug Ducey, he cannot run again since he has already served two terms and they have term limits out in Arizona.
And so, we'll keep you abreast of any developments as they're going to be coming about in this election as we hear of them.
And as always, if you would like to watch the election audit for yourself, you can do so over at azaudit.org, which is the website set up by the Arizona State Senate, which allows you to watch the audit in real time from nine different camera angles.
The link to azaudit.org will be down there in the description box below this video for you to check out, alongside the other links regarding the Pennsylvania lawmakers, as well as this gubernational race out in Arizona.
All those links will be down there in the description box below.
