Trump is on the offensive, and this is an emergency episode of Slightly Offensive.
As you heard it right, Roger Stone, the longtime aide of an advisor of Donald Trump, was commuted from his sentence as he was scheduled to report to prison for obstructing Congress and lying, amongst other things, including witness tampering.
But Donald Trump said, no way, Jose.
He considers this prosecution to be a sham.
And we've got to talk about this.
Let's jump right into this article from the Hill.
So it says here that President Trump on Friday commuted the sentence of longtime confidant Roger Stone after the former campaign advisor was sentenced to serve three years and four months in prison.
The decision capped a saga that has roiled the Justice Department and divided some of the president's advisors.
Stone was set to report to prison on July 14th, but his allies had lobbied for a pardon or a commutation citing his risk of contracting coronavirus in jail.
Now, before we jump into this, critics who are so upset that Donald Trump basically commuted the sentence of one of his best friends, I want to clarify two things.
First of all, what is a commutation?
Because some of you guys don't know what that is.
You've heard it before.
You've heard of a pardon.
But what's the difference?
Well, this article here from KIRO7 explains the difference.
It says that a commutation of sentence reduces a sentence either totally or partially, according to the Department of Justice's Office of the Pardon Attorney.
A commutation can also release a person from a fine imposed at sentencing at least the part of the fine that has not already been paid.
However, it does not erase a conviction, that's really important, implying the person is innocent or remove civil disabilities, such as a ban on voting or running for office that apply to a person convicted of a federal crime.
A person can only get a commutation if they are already serving their sentence and are not appealing their conviction, which of course is different than a pardon, which is when the president forgives a person of a crime for which they were convicted.
So let's jump right back into this.
So we have these people are obviously very upset because Trump is now protecting somebody he believes was wrongly accused.
But the left hasn't stopped but accusing Donald Trump of essentially just giving his friend a handout.
Let's go further into this article and we'll see if this is justified.
The president maintained he had not thought about a pardon for Stone, but regularly railed against the prosecutors involved, signaled out the Obama-appointed federal judge overseeing the trial for criticism and complain that the conservative provocateur was the victim of ridiculous process.
In recent days, Trump indicated he was likely to act.
He told radio host Howie Carr that Stone's prayers for a pardon may be answered just because he was set to report to jail.
Stone was the last of six Trump associates to be charged in connection with former special counsel Robert Moeller's two-year investigation into Trump's campaign contacts with Russia.
Well, first of all, nobody can really get mad at Trump for releasing anybody because right now there is a push in very liberal cities to release inmates from prison, from jail, in fears they might catch the coronavirus.
If you don't know about this, sorry for a little bit of the bad crop here.
California is to release 8,000 prisoners early to make space during pandemic.
More than 8,000 California prisoners will be eligible for an early release program next month to make space for safety measures related to the coronavirus pandemic, the State Corrections Department said Friday.
The move comes as multiple state prisons have seen coronavirus outbreaks in their inmate populations, most notably one at San Quentin in Marine County, where more than 200 staff and more than 1,300 prisoners have active cases.
So as we jump right back into this stone dilemma, number one, if we ask ourselves if it was okay to release Roger on just the case that he could contract coronavirus, well, considering his age and his chance of morbidity, it's possible that Trump could have just ordered a commutation based on protecting his health, which I'm sure a lot of people on the far left couldn't have refuted.
But Trump went a step further and decided that he was going to not forgive this man's sentence, Roger Stone, not even say that he was innocent, which is important.
People talk about Trump being corrupt in that he's saying that there's a guilty man innocent.
But in this situation, Trump is not saying Roger's innocent.
He's just saying he doesn't deserve the sentence that he's been given, which allies of Stone would obviously agree on.
But critics would say, well, this is just the product of a corrupt president handing out and relieving the sentence for someone who's guilty because he's an elitist, because he's wealthy, because he's influence.
But I don't know if that's exactly true because Trump has a point that the judge was an Obama-era judge.
And we know today that there is nothing that goes without being politicized.
But this article by the Hill goes on to say right here that he was convicted in November by a jury in Washington, D.C. of all counts he was charged with, including lying to Congress, witness tampering, and obstructing proceedings.
Attorney General William Barr said in an interview released July 8th that he felt Stone's prosecution was righteous.
It goes on to say that Trump long railed against the Russian investigation, decrying the process as a witch hunt.
And also, as we go, this is just too much in here.
I don't want to waste too much of your time.
But it says here, like many of the individuals Trump has pardoned or issued commutations for, Stone had a steady drumbeat of support among presidential allies and Fox News personalities, always throw them under the bus whenever we can, who lobbied for clemency over the course of several months.
There's also been speculation that Trump could move to pardon Michael Flynn, his short-lived national security advisor, who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI in late 2017.
Without going any further, I do want to say that Trump has taken an offensive approach, not offending people, but jumping on the offense, rightfully so too.
Whether you love the guy or you hate him, he's been the target of so many smears.
I mean, even if you just look at what he was tweeting today, Trump also went after the education institutions, citing too many universities and school systems are about radical left indoctrination, not education.
Therefore, I am telling the Treasury Department to re-examine their tax-exempt status and or funding, which will be taken away if the propaganda or act against public policy continues.
Our children must be educated, not indoctrinated.
And so as you see, when we're going to look at why Trump would choose today, he's obviously in war mode.
The election's coming up.
The far left and his political enemies have joined forces to not only cancel his rallies, which I think the one up in New Hampshire that was just happening ended up getting canceled because of weather, but we know that there's already been problems with trying to register and get a city to host the RNC with some mayors trying to block it.
But the coronavirus is also possibly canceling the debates as the far-left media has already heavily lobbying to tell Biden why he should not debate the president.
Trump is in a very interesting predicament, not to mention the push for mail-in voting.
The other day, I was just watching a news article that said that a dead cat has already received a mail-in voting ballot.
So I don't want to get too much into the odds that are stacked against him, but I know that Trump needs to step up his game.
He needs to finally listen to his base.
He needs to be on that offense.
Some of you have the theories that the way Trump is acting is him trying to play a hard card to let the left expose themselves as some anti-American pejorative that hates this country and hates you.
And so by letting them burn our cities down, he's revealing their true colors.
I just don't think that's true.
I think we already knew what the left's true colors were.
And we already knew the danger that they brought.
And we already knew that Dr. Anthony Fauci was a liar and that Trump shouldn't have listened to him.
And it was about time that Trump started sticking up for people who stuck up for him, especially when the prosecution was completely unfair.
That being said, this isn't the only publication covering this.

Anyway, go to gabby.com/slash offensive.
But let me get back to my main point here.
The commutation of Roger Stone is significant because it marks a new era closer to the election where Trump is showing enemies and signaling that he will not tolerate the attacks on allies close to him that are unfair.
Sometimes, you know, when people cannot bring down a big enemy, they go for the people around them.
You've seen in movies like Taken, right?
You end up kidnapping somebody's daughter in order to go after Liam Neeson.
Never go after Liam Neeson.
But in a real life example, whether it's the witch hunt of Russia, whether it's the accusations in Ukraine, whether it's his taxes now, there's too many groups that are going after Trump that know they are unable to accomplish the tasks that they want.
So what have they done?
They've taken down his associates to let people know if we can't get him down, we will take you down if you come to his aid.
If you support him, you are our enemy, which ultimately we found out who else is the enemy of these radical globalists.
It's us, the people of the United States of America, who voted Donald Trump in.
And if you love Trump, sure, I'm sure you're very happy about this.
If you hate Trump, I'm sure you're angry.
But either way, you've got to give the man some credit for having balls to do what he should have done a long time ago, but to also do it in a very timely manner when it pushes and stings on those who oppose him the most.
Anyway, my name is Elijah Schaefer, the host of Slightly Offensive, bringing you this emergency report on something so vital and crucial that marks the beginning of what I believe is a new chapter in conservatism and also in the Trump campaign.
His enemies should be afraid.
Because as they continue to attack, smear, slander, and even, in some cases, threaten his life.
Trump is more powerful and more intelligent, I believe, than a lot of people give him credit for.
Anyway, guys, I also want to remind you, as always, if you want to support the show, please check out the audio-only versions of this podcast on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, wherever you can download them.
