The greatest thing I have ever heard in my whole life.
I could not believe my ears.
In this house, wherever the rules are disregarded, chaos and mob rule.
It has been said today, where is bravery?
I'll tell you where bravery is found and courage is found.
It's found in this minority who has lived through the last year of nothing but rules being broken, people being put down, questions not being answered, and this majority say, be damned with anything else.
We're going to impeach and do whatever we want to do.
Why?
Because we won an election.
I guarantee you, one day you'll be back in the minority and it ain't gonna be that fun.
Alright, good morning folks.
I'm Chip Lake.
I'm going to be guest hosting the Doug Collins podcast today.
And we've got a good show for Friday, fun day.
We've got big news out of Dallas, Texas that we're going to talk about.
We've got the first firing of the NFL season, an in-season firing in Carolina.
A little surprised about that.
I guess maybe in hindsight after looking at the production from the Carolina Panthers, maybe I shouldn't be surprised about that.
James and I will talk about that.
We've also got a lot of intrigue this weekend with the college football playoff announcing their final four teams on Sunday of this week.
I don't think since we've had a four-team playoff that we've had as much intrigue going into the final weekend, so we'll talk about that.
We'll talk about that a lot.
We'll talk about the ultimate redemption story in Arkansas.
Some news, recruiting news in Boulder, Colorado, as well as Sports Illustrated naming Sportsman of the Year.
And Hall& Oates.
We're going to talk about Hall& Oates a little bit.
So stick with us, and then right after the break, we'll get started.

Thanks for joining us on Friday Funday again.
I'm Chip.
James is with us as well.
James, say hello to the audience today on Friday Funday.
Morning, everybody.
James, it's just you and I. It's just you and I. We found that Doug doesn't really care about us.
He's been trying to push this show off to us this entire time.
I think that's exactly right.
Yeah, so now it's ours, and we've mutinied, and Doug can't join again.
The danger is, when Doug hands over the keys to the show to you and I for Friday Funday, anything can happen.
Yeah, I mean, you mentioned we're going to talk about Fallen Oats.
That's the split that's going to happen for me and Doug.
Um, so it's just, it's the idea of unreconcilable differences.
Like, so apparently something along the lines of, um, okay, I'll read directly.
It says Hall laid out accusations against Oates, which just makes me laugh, but that's their real names.
Um, And saying the planned sale, they were trying to sell their records, I believe.
The planned sale was completely clandestine and a bad faith move that was in blatant violation of the longstanding business agreement between the pair.
He alleged that Oates and the trustees of his estate spent several months falsely contending that they wanted to continue owning their share of the duo's whole Oates Enterprises.
So, in other words, somebody was trying to get paid and somebody was just trying to stay on there.
You know, the money they've earned is one of the best pop duos or whatever you want to call them for the last...
40 years, right?
See, it's weird saying 40, but that's the 80s.
Yeah, no.
I remember listening to Hall& Oates when I was growing up.
Sarah's Smile was a staple in my house.
Yeah.
And kind of let the viewers know, and me know too, I mean...
Are they both deceased?
Is one deceased and one estate is suing the other artist?
I mean, I did see there was a restraining order in some of the filings, too.
I mean, you know, for a duo that's kind of been out of the news for decades.
This is how you get back on the news.
They're going to do a reunion tour and sell all their stuff.
No, they're very much alive.
And it just seems that one wanted to sell and one didn't.
And Oates, it's just so, I hate that it's their real names.
I do.
I don't know.
It just, it drives me nuts.
I remember like 10 years ago and I was like, wait, those are their real names, Daryl Hall and Jaws.
But it just sucks.
Like, this is such a stupid thing.
Like, this is how they're in the news is because this is the title.
Let me read you that.
The Ultimate Betrayal.
We're talking about Hall and Oates.
Well, I mean, yes.
And I had to ask you whether or not the estates were suing each other.
I thought they might both be deceased because I didn't think there was any way in the world that there could be so much hate between the two individuals.
And two guys who really haven't been in the news, like I said, for decades.
In a court filing, it says Daryl Hall alleges surreptitious plan by John Oates to sell song catalog with Oates calling the claims inflammatory, outlandish, and inaccurate.
It's the sign of the times.
Yeah, man.
Listen, they probably haven't made a lot of money.
Oates wanted to make a few bucks.
That's just a fact.
That's all it is.
Yeah, that's right.
And it's silly and it's stupid, but it's very funny.
Well, I'm going to tell you it's going to make a few bucks for the lawyers representing the two.
That's right.
They're the winners.
Not Hall, not Darrell Hall, not John Oates.
They're going to be the big winners here.
Big news out of Dallas, Texas this week.
That's right, where I'm at.
Big news.
Mark Cuban, the majority owner of the Dallas Mavericks since I believe the year 2000, so going on 24 years, and a staple on the show Shark Tank, which I love watching every Friday and I enjoy watching the reruns.
Within a 48-hour period, Mark Cuban announces that he is stepping down.
This will be his last season from Shark Tank.
And he is also selling the majority interests of the Dallas Mavericks to Sheldon Adelson's widow.
They're casino tycoons, right?
Yeah, yeah.
Let me read a statement here.
According to the Las Vegas Sands spokesman Ron Rees, We're good to go.
The announcement comes as the Las Vegas Sands Corporation informed the Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday that Miriam Adelson and the Adelson Family Trust will sell $2 billion, with a B, $2 billion of sand stock to, quote, fund the purchase of the majority interest in a professional sports franchise.
James, what did you think about this when you saw the news this weekend?
So, I don't know if we discussed this on the show, but I'm a basketball head, so I know a lot about...
I love the history of the Mavericks.
I think since Cubans got there, that is one of the best franchise turnarounds in sports history, to be honest with you.
But, first and foremost, I love that he gets to keep his shares.
I love that he gets to stay in a position where he gets to make decisions.
Because I think that would have denied the sale for him.
I have a feeling that Mark Cuban probably has tried to sell his team a hundred times because he's a businessman.
He's not an idiot.
And I'm sure when they were at the height of their powers in 2011, 2012, he probably decided to sell them then too.
But I bet you, and I could be totally wrong about this, this is not fact, but I wouldn't be surprised if he said, whoever I sell to, you have to let me stay on and be in the position that I'm in.
And this was probably the only group that was like, yeah, whatever.
We're going to make money off you.
They're going to make money off Mark Cuban.
Mark Cuban's going to keep his position, chill out.
He's got Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving on his team.
He made $3.5 billion.
He bought the team for $285 million.
Now, I know that was 24 years ago, but it's just like...
Think about it.
You can just take that money and put it towards something else.
He's a genius.
We do not give Mark Cuban enough credit for being one of the...
He rarely makes mistakes.
It's fascinating.
My first thought when I saw it is...
Maybe he really is running for president.
Then he had to come out.
He had to make it very clear.
He had to make it very clear that it had absolutely nothing to do with this.
I go back to my government days when I was working in politics.
Politicians throw numbers around.
You know, like hundreds of millions of dollars and billions of dollars.
And I always thought it was the best example of just how much money a billion dollar is, is James, if I gave you a dollar a second, and I'm not going to do that, by the way, but if I gave you a dollar a second, it would take you 12 and a half days to accumulate a million dollars.
Do you know how long it would take you to accumulate a billion dollars if I gave you a dollar?
I remember our teacher telling us this number.
I don't remember it, but I remember us having this conversation.
I remember we were in like fifth grade and everyone lost their mind.
32 and a half years.
Yeah.
And that's how much a billion dollars is.
And this is just one of the entities.
This, to me, was always something that, you know, I always thought that Mark Cuban, I always thought the Dallas Mavericks were kind of his toy, right?
He likes sports.
You know, he loves Dallas.
Bought the Mavericks, like he said, turned it around, and he didn't want to get rid of his toy.
But in hindsight, I think you're probably right.
He probably didn't get the right...
The right dollar amount and the right fit because it sounds like from reading the article that he's staying on as general manager.
Yeah, essentially.
He gets to just hang out.
Yeah.
There's a story.
Dirk Nowitzki recently just got in the Hall of Fame this past summer, right?
He did.
And for those who don't know Dirk Nowitzki, he is...
The Dallas Mavericks, greatest player in franchise history.
He turned that entire organization around.
Oh, he basically came in with Mark Cuban.
He came in in 98, Cuban came in in 2000. And there's a story that Mark Cuban said, I'm the owner now.
I want to play one-on-one.
And Dirk was like, I'm not going to do that.
And he's like, come on, play me one-on-one.
And so Dirk said, you know what, you got it.
And Dirk went past him and dunked it on his head.
And he said, welcome to the Mavericks.
But they've had a great relationship.
And it's because of someone like Mark Cuban.
Mark Cuban is probably the kind of owner you want as a player.
Oh, absolutely.
I know we talk about Jerry sometimes, both ironically in Dallas, but the players seem to like Jerry.
Jerry Jones in Dallas.
And they should.
And I know that there are some people who are like, please, Jerry Jones.
But with Mark Cuban, it's the same thing, but he's just not as controversial as Jerry Jones.
He's just more out there than Jerry Jones as far as how much fun he's having during these games.
But Mark Cuban literally turned that franchise into gold.
He turned the Dallas Mavericks into a goal.
If you were alive in the 80s, I was not.
In the early 90s, the Dallas Mavericks were not a great team.
They had some good teams with Blackmen and stuff like that, but they weren't a great team.
They weren't on the map.
And he put them on the map.
And for him to sell the team, I think this was the only option is that he got to stay on.
And I love it.
I'm all for it.
I can't wait to see Cuban do it.
See, Cuban's going to get to do some things that he wasn't allowed to do as an owner.
And I think we're going to find out what they are pretty quickly.
Yeah, and look, Miriam Adelson and that trust, I mean, you know, she has absolutely no interest in running an NFL franchise, none whatsoever.
You know, Miriam was, I think she just recently retired, even when her husband Sheldon was alive.
And for those that don't know, they own the Venetian franchise.
She's a casino in Las Vegas and run the Las Vegas Sands Corporation.
Sheldon died a couple years ago.
She was still a practicing OBGYN in the Las Vegas area until a few years ago.
She was recently retired.
I think it's just a great fit.
I don't think she's got any interest at all in running.
No.
See, basketball and NFL teams and stuff, I'm sure baseball is the same, but they're just money-making machines.
Yeah.
Like if I had a big chunk of money to invest, I would just invest in a sports franchise.
Oh, no question.
It's not even up for debate.
If I had a big chunk and I could join a group, that's what I would do.
They don't lose value over time.
I would argue there are people who are invested in the Detroit Pistons right now who have lost 18 straight games.
They probably are still making money.
You know what I'm saying?
Like, that's, you know, so, anyway.
Well, speaking about sports teams making money, the Carolina Panthers this week made some news.
And David Tepper, the hedge fund owner of the Carolina Panthers, he's a Pittsburgh guy.
He's not a Carolina guy.
He bought the team from Jerry Richardson when Jerry was forced to sell the team before he passed.
But Charlotte gave up the farm last year in the draft to move up and pick up the number one pick.
And I always thought it was, candidly, James, I always thought it was kind of an odd trade that they made with the Chicago Bears.
Because, you know, unlike this year when Caleb Williams is kind of the consensus number one quarterback.
Yeah, it was a toss-up.
Yeah, and unlike a couple years ago when Trevor Lawrence was, you know, last year there was a very healthy debate about who the best quarterback in that draft.
There was even a debate that guys like Will Levis might have been the best quarterback.
But that was actually brought up.
It's not true, but it was brought up.
Yeah, that's exactly right.
And so everybody assumed that Carolina knew who they were going to pick.
And then it kind of dawned on me and the rest of the world after that transaction closed, the trade transaction, that there were still people within the Carolina Panthers organization who felt like C.J. Stroud was the best quarterback in the crop.
Although, and now we know that he was, right?
Now we know that he was.
By a mile.
Yeah, that's right.
Can we say something real quick though, Chip?
100%.
No one, no one was sure about C.J. Stroud.
I want everyone to be clear about this.
Yes.
There were people talking about C.J. Stroud and Bryce Young, and there were people calling Bryce Young the Steph Curry of the NFL, whatever that means.
Yes.
And there were people like C.J. Stroud could be good, but there were more doubters about C.J. Stroud than any quarterback I can remember recently besides like, you know, maybe – Justin Fields, I can think of too.
But there were a lot of doubts about both these guys.
And TJ Stroud has come out and arguably been a top five quarterback on the planet.
That's a real number.
That doesn't normally happen.
What C.J. Stroud has done this year is beyond what anybody could have ever imagined.
Candidly, had Carolina taken C.J. Stroud with the first pick, James, would he be putting these numbers up in Charlotte?
No, because Charlotte's a mess.
This is where I wanted to ask you a question.
Firing Frank Reich is the most absurd thing I can think of.
First and foremost, Frank Reich is probably the happiest man on the planet because one, he doesn't have to coach a bad football team, but two, he gets paid by them and the Colts for the next three years.
Am I wrong?
Three or four years?
To do nothing.
I know the Panthers was a four-year deal.
So he gets to get paid to do nothing.
You know, if I'm him, I'm just taking four years vacation.
That's what I'm doing.
Yeah, he said he's not done with coaching, but it's probably his last foray in the NFL, and that probably makes sense.
Right.
Now, here's my problem.
I understood, I think we all understood, when Jacksonville had Urban Meyer, they had to fire him.
It was one season, but it was a horrifying season as far as there was talk in the locker room about how bad it was.
He was disrespectful.
There's the videos of him at the bar with the young girls.
It was a blank show.
It was awful.
The only thing they're talking about is that the team isn't playing well.
You're going to give a coach 12 games?
I don't get it.
Well, let's talk about that because I think the reality is if C.J. Stroud was not putting up the numbers that he's putting up with the Texans, I don't think this firing would have happened.
If C.J. Stroud was putting up even average rookie numbers, which he's not doing, he's putting up top five NFL quarterback numbers, but if he was putting up even average rookie numbers, I think Frank Reich stays in there.
I don't understand how that has anything to do with it.
I mean, I get what you're saying.
I understand it's the owner who's fairly new to this whole thing.
Well, keep in mind, real quick, James, keep in mind, too, this is the same owner who did not retain Steve Wilkes last year.
When Wilkes is the interim coach from the Matt Wolf firing, went 6-6.
I mean, right now, 6-6 looks like a really good deal for the Carolina Patriots.
Yes.
Oh, my God.
It does.
I don't understand.
I guess I don't understand.
I think what happened is Frank Reich was like, listen, I did not want this kid, and it's hard for me to coach him.
I think that's the problem.
Well, it absolutely has to be something in that category because also given the exit door and given their papers to walk at the same time was quarterbacks coach Josh McCown and then Deuce Staley.
I think he was the assistant head coach.
So, you know, probably Frank Reich disciple.
But that's a lot of changes to make, you know, with six games left in the season.
And, you know, Tepper was asked...
Tepper, who also owns the soccer franchise in Charlotte, even though he has a house in Miami and Pittsburgh and really didn't have any ties to the Carolina area until he purchased a majority stake in the Panthers.
But he was quoted as saying, everybody in the franchise.
Everybody.
Unanimous is the word he used, and that means everybody.
It was unanimous that we all believed that Bryce Young was the best pick.
And look, in fairness to Bryce Young, he's got zero offensive line.
I'm not done with Bryce Young yet.
If you're done with Bryce Young already, you're...
That's right.
He's got very few skill players.
Look, I love Adam Phelan.
I was just going to say, Adam Phelan is his best receiver, and I am a fan.
And he's a good piece, and he's a good backup receiver on my fantasy.
He would be great as a number two or three right now.
If you had Adam Thielen as your second or third receiver, you're in good shape.
But if he's your number one, that means you have nothing else.
But he's hands down the best skill player that they have.
And it's not even close.
No, and they gave away so much to get that pick.
I mean, this team's not going to get better next year.
No, it's going to the Chicago Bears.
Their number one pick, probably.
Here's the problem.
This is why...
Chicago is going to have two top seven picks, probably.
They're probably going to be in the seven or eight range, I think, with their actual pick.
And the Bears are going to be...
And the Carolinas are going to probably have the number one pick if it doesn't go to the...
If they end up winning more games than the Patriots or...
The Cardinals, I'll be shocked.
But the point is, they're giving that pick to the Bears.
So Carolina has nothing.
They can't get an offensive lineman.
They can't get a wide receiver.
They can't go get somebody on the defensive end that maybe can get the ball for them.
They can't even go get a running back and be stupid with a pick.
And they're not going to be an attractive franchise for three agents.
No.
If you're a running back, are you going there?
They have no offensive line.
Miles Sanders got a contract because of how good the Eagles' offensive line was last year.
Now he's with them and he looks terrible.
But I don't blame him completely.
He was never that elite back to begin with.
He just played with the great offensive line.
The Carolina Panthers have given Bryce Young no time, no receivers except for Adam Thielen, and his running game has been terrible.
But he also doesn't look good.
You combine all of those things without a pick next year, I don't know where you go if you're Carolina.
And everything that you said is correct, James.
Everything you said is correct.
What you left out of that equation, which is not specific to Carolina per se, is the productivity of C.J. Stroud, right?
I mean, it's just...
We can't overestimate...
What C.J. Stroud is doing with the Texans?
And I believe it's ruined the Carolina franchise right now.
You know what it's done?
It's saved my fantasy football season.
Thank you, Tank Dale.
No, really look at what C.J. Okay, you've got two franchises.
The Texans, since J.J. Watts' prime, haven't been an elite franchise, right?
They had a run where they were close, where it was Foster and him, and they had terrible quarterbacks, but they still were a very contending team.
They could play ball.
Yes.
But since then, and also around the same time, Carolina had that run as well with Cam Newton.
But these two franchises for the last few years have kind of been in a rut, right?
Yes, they have.
And it was a decision of a quarterback that just changed their franchises forever.
CJ Stroud goes to their...
Yeah.
I thought it was a quick look.
Um...
There must be something else going on that we just don't know about.
Either that or it became very apparent to the owner that sometimes there's just not any synergy.
There wasn't going to be any chemistry between the head coach, who clearly is not in the middle of his career or at the beginning of his career, like a lot of these head coaches are, but he's at the end.
Tepper might have...
Might have seen those factors develop behind the scenes and kind of made a decision, but it did seem kind of quick to me.
Let's pivot to a topic that I want to give a decent amount of time to.
Let's do it.
I know we're 25 minutes into the show already.
It's flown by.
It's a podcast.
We can go on for two hours.
That's right.
Hey, James, I think this is the most intriguing weekend of college football that we've ever had.
In a long time.
At least in a long time.
Absolutely.
We have eight teams in Power Five conferences that are either undefeated or have won loss.
Going into conference championship weekend.
The BCS rankings as of right now list Georgia number one at 12-0.
They have Alabama number eight at 11-1.
Alabama and Georgia play each other this weekend.
There are very, very few...
I don't know that we've ever gone into the final weekend with...
It's the first one that I can think of where there are no guarantees.
with respect to who these final four teams will be.
And here's what I mean by that.
Very rarely have we ever gone into a weekend and the team that sits at the top of the BCS playoff rankings, in this case, Georgia.
Usually Georgia, in the past couple of years, they've been in this position, right?
So, I mean, they're going on two years now, three years.
But in the past, they've been able to lose the SEC title game or, you know, didn't make it in there.
It didn't matter.
You know, the one team was always going to be in there.
That's not the case this year.
I mean, I think it should be.
I think Georgia, whether they lose on Saturday or not, should be one of the top four teams in the BCS playoffs.
But I'll just walk through it and get your thoughts on it.
You have number one, Georgia.
They play number eight in Alabama.
And one would think that the winner of that game gets a spot.
But I don't know that that's 100% guaranteed because you have Texas at number 7. They beat Alabama at the beginning of the year, and I do want to talk about that in a little bit.
But sitting at number 2, you have the Michigan Wolverines.
I think Michigan's in no matter what.
You think Michigan's in if they lose to Iowa?
Walk me through that.
Walk me through that, because I think Michigan is done if they lose to Iowa.
And I'll tell you why, but go ahead.
They don't want them in there.
Let's not pretend they don't want Michigan in there.
They don't want to have to crown them after what we've been through.
Plus, they're going to have to do an investigation.
But if they lose to Iowa by a field goal, and it's a good game, do they get in?
I don't think so, and I'll tell you why.
I think they should be.
Well, hold on.
Before I answer that question, because it's a good question.
They're not losing to Iowa?
No, no, no, no, no, no.
Before I answer that question, let's make sure we start the basis of this discussion with an underlying premise.
The underlying premise that the playoff committee gives us every year at this point in time.
And that premise is this.
We're looking for the best four teams.
Correct.
We're looking for the best four teams, okay?
Michigan is in that conversation.
I certainly think right now...
I think they're the best team.
They're the best team.
I think that personally, too.
Now, let's talk about all these scenarios that can play themselves out.
Actually, before I do that, I did say that I would answer your question.
And the question is this.
If Michigan loses to Iowa, are they in there?
I think there's a chance they could be in there, but let me give you a scenario in which they're not.
Alabama beats Georgia.
I think Alabama and Georgia should be in under those parameters.
I think they're two of the best teams.
Let's say that...
You know, let's say that Washington loses to Oregon.
Then you've got a 12-1 Washington team.
Now, the consensus is that the loser of that game is out.
And I think that's clearly the case.
That's clearly the case if Washington beats Oregon for a second time.
No question.
Okay, sure.
Absolutely.
No question about it.
But if Washington wins therein, then you've got Georgia, you have Washington, and You have Alabama under the scenario that I just explained that Alabama beats Georgia.
And I think that's a 50-50 game.
You think Georgia's out if they lose to Alabama?
No, I don't.
I think Georgia's in.
But I think that's the scenario that has Michigan out, right?
I mean, if the week before...
Not the week before.
I mean, these games are going to happen on Saturday with the exception of Washington, Oregon, which will be a Friday evening game, late Friday evening game.
And the playoff committee, I think, announces the top four at noon on Sunday.
And so if you lose the day before, the same time that Alabama's beating the number one team, Under the scenario we discussed in the BCS, I think that's not a good scenario for Michigan.
And I don't know that Michigan is going to get a lot of love from the playoff committee under that scenario.
And I think Michigan might find themselves out because I think Florida State's going to beat Louisville.
And while I believe that Michigan is one of the top four teams in the country, even if they lose to Iowa, I have a hard time believing that Florida State, even if they beat Louisville, and I think they probably will, is one of the best four teams without Jordan Travis.
I was going to ask you that.
That was something I was curious about.
I think Washington is going to get in.
I hope.
I'm actually rooting for them a lot because I just like the idea of Pennix and that journey and that whole thing.
I think it's been great.
But Florida State was the one for me.
If they trip up, they're out.
No questions asked about it because they have the excuse of, well, they don't have their quarterback.
100%.
Because they don't want them in.
I'm telling you right now, without their quarterback, they don't want them in right now.
They're begging them to lose.
They want to find a way to not put them in there.
So it would be very advantageous for the playoff committee to have Louisville win that game on Saturday.
Right, absolutely.
And if Alabama were to beat Georgia, can you have two teams with losses over a Florida State team with no losses?
Can you do that?
I think you can, yeah.
See, that's what I'm saying.
To me, I don't like that.
I get it.
We do want to see the best quarterback.
We want to see the best teams play.
But...
But telling them their season means nothing because they lost their quarterback is disgusting to me.
This is why the college football committee has a hard job, but also...
And I don't care if...
I know they're not listening to this show.
They're awful.
And they make a lot of mistakes.
And in this case, I think not letting Florida State in if they go undefeated would be a mistake.
I just do.
And I understand disagreeing, but I just...
Their season...
And I think it's terrible what happened to Jordan Travis.
I saw that play live when it happened.
It was just an awful, gruesome injury.
And you feel bad for the Florida State kids too, but I'll go back to the parameters that the college football playoff committee says that they do, and that's to get the four best teams.
And so I would ask you under that scenario, and I feel bad for Florida State too, but I would ask you under that scenario, if Florida State makes it in, Then I guess, who gets out?
Does that mean Alabama or Georgia, the loser, that game is out?
And if that's the case, James, I'm going to ask you the question.
Let's say, you know, let's say, first of all, let's say...
Alabama beats Georgia, but Alabama still doesn't make it under that scenario because Florida State beats Louisville.
If Alabama were to play Florida State today after they beat Georgia on a neutral field, what do you think happens in that game?
I mean, it'll be a blowout.
No, you're right.
You're right.
I agree with that part of it.
I guess the emotional side of me just says you can't tell them their season means nothing.
I agree.
That's my issue.
In an NFL game, if Joe Burrow were to go down right before the playoffs, they don't say, well, we're going to replace you.
And I get that it's totally different.
There's 30 teams versus a million teams.
But I'm just saying in this scenario, I would suck.
But yes, if we want to see the best teams play, we're hoping Georgia gets in, Michigan gets in.
Personally, I would rather, if it was up to me, and I know this is not how it works, because it's not, but personally, I would rather see Georgia, Michigan, Oregon, and Washington.
Because I think Oregon's explosive offense is so much better for college football than watching like I don't know, Texas?
I don't like Texas at all.
I don't like their chances to get in.
They need some help to get in.
There's only one team out of the eight that really has zero chance, and that's Ohio State.
It's largely because they're the one team out of the eight that doesn't play football this weekend.
No, they're not getting it.
If you're on the outside looking in and you're number six, you're out of luck.
Who does Michigan play?
Michigan plays Iowa in Indianapolis.
Oh, right, right, right.
They play Iowa in Indianapolis.
And look, that Iowa team is one of the best defenses in the country.
I couldn't put it past them.
I've never looked forward to this week more.
It's just so many different...
Well, the Georgia game is crazy.
The Georgia game is going to be...
We talked about the Texas Longhorns and the argument they have.
They do have an argument, but that Oklahoma loss is really...
It doesn't look good now.
It did at first.
It was a tough loss, whatever.
Now it doesn't look good.
You know, you want to reward the top four teams, and when you see what Alabama's done throughout the year, and I'm not an Alabama fan or a Georgia fan.
I'm an Auburn fan, and I'm miserable because we lost to both of them at home.
I don't even want to talk about this weekend, but I remember being on this podcast Early in Alabama's season saying the dynasty was over.
Oh yeah.
That was a conversation.
And I said that because they had just lost a 10 to Texas at home.
They had no quarterback.
I mean, Milrow today, where Jalen Milrow has been for the last...
Six games and where he was at the beginning of the season is just night and day.
This is an Alabama team that looked horrid against South Florida and beat them 17-3 the week after the Texas game and had to start another quarterback.
It looked like it was over.
It looked like Alabama could have two or three losses.
It's just hard to grade that Texas win against Alabama early in the season because it seems like it was two seasons ago.
But, you know, the bottom line is, look, I'm going to love it because I always want more football.
I'm going to love it when we go to a 12-team playoff because we're not going to have...
Oh, my God.
But I'm also going to miss it because this is the year where there's so many things up in the air.
And while I've disagreed with the playoff committee, a lot of times they have almost an impossible job.
Oh yeah.
Everyone's going to be pissed off this year.
But the top four teams.
But every time I say that...
There will be a surprise this weekend.
I don't know where it'll be.
Maybe it's Iowa upsetting Michigan.
Maybe it's Louisville upsetting Florida State.
I don't know where it'll be.
I think maybe Oregon-Washington.
I don't know how much of an upset it'll be if they beat Washington.
But...
Yeah, I don't even know what the one is for that game, but I would think...
Yeah, it's probably close.
It's got to be.
I mean, you know, Washington defeated Oregon at home, right?
That was a home game for Washington, and it was a close game.
Yeah, I believe so.
I would say that might be the one, and you know what?
Like you said, the Michigan game, there's a chance.
It's probably not going to happen.
I think Michigan's going to wash them over because they run the ball way too well, which means they control the tempo, but...
Yeah, I don't know.
I hate to say this.
I hate to say what I'm about to say.
Go for it.
If Alabama can beat Georgia and make it into the college football playoff, I wouldn't bet against them.
And here's why.
They're the only team right now playing with house money.
Absolutely.
And a team that's playing with house money is always the most dangerous team out there because folks like me...
I foolishly wrote this program off.
I mean, look, I was at the Auburn-Alabama game.
They had no business winning that game.
I'm sorry, you were there this weekend?
Yes, I was.
Yes, I was.
You okay?
No, I'm not.
Did you make it out of there a lot?
No, I'm not.
I'm not okay.
I'm not okay.
It's still too soon.
But when you win a game like that, look what happened last time Alabama snuck in the college football playoff as the number four team.
There's a momentum to this thing.
I do think with these eight teams, of course Ohio State has zero chance and they're not going to be part of it, but I think with these eight teams, James, Seven of them can get in.
We haven't been able to say this in the past, but I think we can say it this year.
On any given day, I can make an argument with Sands, Ohio State, who's not going to make it, and Florida State, who lost Jordan Travis.
So it's really six teams.
Any of those six teams on a neutral field can beat any of the other six teams on any given day.
I would argue the one team to me that has the most...
How do I put this?
Everybody's defenses are okay, but as far as offense goes, I think Washington has the best offense.
Maybe I'm wrong.
And that's the thing in like...
Well, I think...
I think I'm going to go.
They will play the two toughest defenses that they played this year.
And then we will know at that point in time, because if Washington wins, they're in.
We will know at that point, if Washington can get through the gauntlet of Oregon, again, because it's tough to beat a good team twice, they would need to check that box, I think, to make it into the playoffs.
And then they'd be stuck in a playoff with either Georgia, Michigan, Alabama, and Or Florida State.
And Florida State's got a really good defense.
It's better defense than any team Washington's played this year.
Correct.
And if Washington can get through those three games, whoever gets through those games.
But I think you're right.
We usually find out, you know...
Because that's what's always made the SEC. And I know, folks, I'm an SEC guy.
I grew up in it.
I know it bothers people when we get to this point in time.
But, I mean, SEC, I think, does play the best defense in the country.
Those are just the facts.
Yeah, we don't have to pretend.
SEC teams, once they go through that gauntlet, not at the beginning of the year, like we saw with Alabama and Texas and a few of the other games, but at the end of the year, you've been through that gauntlet.
Your team's gotten better.
They've grown.
They're all well-coached.
SEC's got tremendous coaches.
So I think the country would go ballistic.
If Alabama beats Georgia, gets in the college football playoff as the four-team and then wins.
But it's also hard to make an argument that they shouldn't be there if they're the fourth seed and they win.
Oh, they'll make an argument.
I can't wait to watch Pat McAfee's show and the announcements in.
And by the way, we haven't even discussed the irony of the fact that That the Washington-Oregon State, I mean, you know, a Pac-12 team is guaranteed in there.
Pac-12 is disintegrating after this weekend.
It's so funny that Pac-12 had its best year in years.
They got one last spurt before it all goes to hell.
They definitely did.
But anyway, I'm looking forward to it.
One other thing is we've got 42 minutes already that I want to get your thoughts on, and then we'll go ahead and wrap for the week, and we'll discuss all these results next week.
Redemption story in Arkansas.
How about Bobby Petruccio?
I mean, how many years to move from calling it a redemption story?
It's a motorcycle accident in the next race, and now he goes back and he's going to be Sam Pittman's offensive coordinator.
James, you can't make this stuff up.
Why do you bring someone back like that?
Like, you're just asking the story to be dug back up, and it has been multiple times in the last two days.
Hey, you remember that time that Bobby Petrino cheated on his wife and took her on a motorcycle ride, and they both almost died, and then he showed up to a press conference like he was in an accident commercial?
Like, it was...
I remember, what was it, 2011?
Was that?
I was in high school.
You know, I believe it was around 11, 11, 12. Yeah, so I was in high school or just out.
Either way.
I mean, bringing this guy back is such a mistake.
And I'm not saying it's going to bite them, but it might.
And Arkansas is not really...
I don't know where Arkansas stands as far as how good they are as a football team right now.
But...
I don't think bringing Bobby Petrino back is the answer to any problem you think you have.
You know, it's interesting.
My take on it is this.
And I have probably a little different take, but here's the background with it.
Arkansas is...
Other than Vanderbilt, I think probably the toughest place in the SEC to succeed on a year-to-year basis, right?
I mean, it's just not a...
Sam Pittman took over that job, and he overachieved last year, and he did a phenomenal job because it's tough to win at Arkansas.
And they rewarded him with a huge contract, which I always thought was a mistake because if you win one year in Arkansas...
Probably not going to have another really good year for another five years on average.
I mean, it's just the way the ball bounces.
And so, look, they ended this year as a very bad team.
But the first four or five games that they lost in conference were all very close games.
They took Alabama to one score.
They took LSU to one score.
I mean, they played some close games against some good teams.
And then it just seems like the air was let out of the balloon.
They were 0-4.
They were 0-5.
And then Auburn went in and beat them.
And then, you know, it was Auburn's biggest win of the year.
And so, you know, look, you feel like you're going to keep Sam Pittman because you're going to owe him a boatload of money if you end up firing him.
And he just came off, you know, last season, the best season Arkansas has had a decade.
And so, you know...
You have to mix things up.
And a lot of people don't know what Bobby Petrino was doing, you know, in between, you know, leaving Arkansas and now.
And I can tell you what he was doing.
He was coaching an FCS team in Missouri.
And I know this because my son played for Kennesaw State University, which is an FCS program here in my hometown.
And I'm a big FCS, and he was one of the best head coaches in FCS for seven, eight years.
He wasn't a bad coach with Arkansas.
That's not the problem.
I don't think it's the coaching that's the problem.
It's not the problem.
It's that they had a massive scandal at that school.
It's an redemption story.
And I guess I'm not an Arkansas fan, certainly.
I'm an Auburn fan.
But if I'm an Arkansas fan, yeah, I mean, and I'm only worried about product in the field and wins and losses.
Yeah, for sure.
You don't care, right?
Yeah, you're like, good.
I got an offensive genius.
We're good with that.
If I'm Sam Pittman, I felt like I was forced to do it.
And are we just kidding ourselves to know that within the next year or two?
I mean, does anybody not think that Bobby Petrino won't be named interim head coach at some point?
Oh, yeah.
That's the idea.
You know, I feel more bad for the woman that he was with on the motorcycle.
Now everyone's going to be Googling her name.
And his wife has to bring this back up and his kids have to deal with it.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's the part that, like, sucks.
But also at the same time, like...
You know what, Arkansas, if you think this is the solution to your problem and you want to bring back Bobby Petrino in the glory days, go for it.
Oh!
One other item about this issue, and then there's also an issue.
I know we've gone for 47 minutes.
Don't worry about it.
So we could go, and there's one other issue I want to discuss.
But I saw a meme this week with Bobby Petrino on the motorcycle.
And on the motorcycle was superimposed Sam Pittman in a neck brace.
If that's not a metaphor of what people think is going to happen at Arkansas, I don't know.
Absolutely.
One other story that I just meant to mention, and our time flew by because we had so much to talk about with the college football playoff with Bowler Colorado.
I mean, what a news story Deion Sanders has been this year.
Got off to that huge, huge start.
Huge recruiting class earlier this year.
Or just earlier this week.
We talk about Mark Cuban making news this week.
Deion Sanders has as well.
Sports Illustrated named him the Sportsman of the Year.
Kind of a big deal, right?
Yeah.
I mean, it's pretty deserving.
It's like the sports version of Time's Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Woman of the Year.
It's kind of a big deal.
I'm not surprised.
Are you surprised?
Well, walk me through it.
I mean, the balloons kind of deflated a little bit.
He lost both of his five-star quarterbacks this week, and they're on a five-, six-game losing streak to end the year.
Maybe it's who had the longest run as the most biggest face on the television, right?
That's how Sportsman of the Year works, right?
LeBron, when he wins, it's because his face was plastered on SportsCenter as much as possible.
Deion has been on since, when did football start?
So let's call it August.
Late August to about a month and a half ago, it's been the Deion Show.
That's enough to get you that thing if nobody was in a longer position before that.
I'd say maybe...
Maybe the Kelseys would be in that position, and I'm sure they were in it.
Oh, yes.
That's my point.
Jalen Hurts could have been in that conversation.
Patrick Mahomes is always in that conversation.
And who won the NBA? And Jokic.
Personally, I think Jokic probably should have won it.
However, he probably said, I don't want to be a part of it because he just wants to go play with his horses in Slovenia.
So...
But the point is, though, that's why I would say he won, is because he had the longest tenure of someone who would happily be on Sports Illustrated.
Yeah, you wonder what those conversations were like the last few weeks, right?
Because I'm sure that, you know, I'm sure around October, late October, early November, they were, you know, well, they probably start in the middle of the year, maybe late third quarter, late third quarter of the year, you know, determining who were finalists for there.
Another one's probably showing.
Yeah, so I just, the irony is too, James, you know, Of course, college kids, they don't sign with teams until December.
They give verbal agreements.
Yeah, for signing day.
But back in mid-September, late September, early October, it looked like Deion Sanders might have a top five recruiting class.
Yeah, and it's all bad.
I think he lost two of the quarterbacks.
Am I right?
Not only did he lose two of his quarterbacks, but right now, I looked on Max Prep's recruiting site last night in preparation for the show, and his team right now is 61. Now, obviously, that could...
You know, it's very fluid.
There's a lot of players going to make their minds up here in the next few weeks.
Maybe he can get up to a top 20 class.
It won't take, you know, but four or five big players to do that.
But, you know, but certainly...
What a beginning of the year and what an end of the year.
I'm a Deion Sanders fan.
I want to see him succeed.
I don't want him going to the NFL yet.
I just don't want him yet.
I want this because he can't control men.
But at the same time, I do want to see him succeed there.
I just don't understand why so many people have so much vitriol for him and want to see him fail.
I think he's good for football.
Because...
Because people are, I mean, in the words of Deion Sanders, people are haters.
And that's just the way it's always going to be.
Yeah.
That's the way it's always going to be.
He's right.
James, man, our time has flown by.
I really, look, man, I love politics and I love sports.
And I like talking about both of them.
And I know that you and Doug do a phenomenal job on the Doug Collins podcast.
Mondays and Wednesdays kind of tackling the issues of the day and on Friday we get to have a little more fun and we get to expand a little bit, talk some pop culture, talk some sports, especially football, man.
We're getting towards the end of the college football season.
We're in the final stretches of the NFL season.
These next few months are going to be fun.
Yeah, I have mixed emotions this time of year because once the Super Bowl comes in early February, late January, it is kind of mixed emotions for guys like you and I and even Doug.
Oh yeah.
We don't get to have these discussions until later on in the year.
But, man, I always love doing Friday fun days in the Doug Collins podcast.
James, I'll let you have kind of the final word with the audience, and then we'll sign off until next week when we get on next week and be able to talk about – we won't be talking hypotheticals.
We will have four teams in college football, and at that time we'll talk about – You know, the decisions that the playoff committee made.
But James, go ahead, sign us off.
Well, I'm super excited for this weekend because it's going to be one, like you said, it's probably one of the best weekends in college football history.
But also, the Vikings, as we haven't discussed on the show, the Bears-Vikings game, because nobody wanted to talk about that.
Otherwise, they would shoot themselves.
However, they don't play this weekend, so they can't lose.
So it's a win-win situation for me.
That's right.
And I also want to mention, right before we go, way to go on using B. John Robinson this weekend.
Arthur Smith gets a gold star.
But this weekend's going to be incredible for both college and NFL because the playoff race is heating up in both.
And I'm super excited.
Enjoy the weekend, everybody.
We'll talk to you next week.
James, appreciate you being on.
I'm glad you brought up B. John Robinson, my fantasy football team of which he's on.
