You want to listen to a podcast?
By who?
Georgia GOP Congressman Doug Collins.
How is it?
The greatest thing I have ever heard in my whole life.
I could not believe my ears.
This house, wherever the rules are disregarded, chaos and mob rule.
It has been said today, where is bravery?
I'll tell you where bravery is found and courage is found.
It's found in this minority who has lived through the last year of nothing but rules being broken, people being put down, questions not being answered, and this majority say, be damned with anything else.
We're going to impeach and do whatever we want to do.
Why?
Because we won an election.
I guarantee you, one day you'll be back in the minority and it ain't gonna be that fun.
Hey everybody, welcome back to the Doug Collins Podcast.
Glad to have you with us today.
I'm going to introduce you to someone on the podcast who I have got a lot of respect for.
He is Ben Klein.
He is from the great state of Virginia.
Congressman from up in the wonderful Valley area up in there.
Just a great place.
A part of Virginia that you don't expect, because most people now expect Virginia to look like the suburbs of Washington, D.C. This district does not look like the suburbs of Washington, D.C. And Ben came into Congress with some experience.
He worked for a former member, but he came in and he was one of the ones that I went after to get on Judiciary Committee when I was the ranking member.
And I'm so glad that I did with everything that we went on that term.
And he has just continued to just excel at that.
Ben, welcome to the podcast.
Well, Doug, it's great to be with you and appreciate your leadership there on Judiciary.
It was an amazing time there as a freshman to be confronted with The Mueller investigation and all the different efforts by this corrupt intelligence community or the corruption in the intelligence community that was not rooted out by The Trump administration certainly has not been rooted out by the Biden administration, but it's great to be with you today.
I want to hit on something here because I like for people to get to know the faces that they see on TV or the face they see in Washington.
You brought up coming into Washington.
You had worked for a former member.
You had had experience with what the office structure is, but you came in at probably one of the more momentous times in history.
And that being, as you just said, Mueller, impeachment, everything else going on.
What was that like?
I mean, you had some experience with Congress, but you're getting there now and you go straight to the fire.
No doubt.
It was not anything like I had experienced working for my predecessor.
For nearly a decade there, back in the 90s, you know, they were a little more cordial.
There were a lot of Southern Democrats who were voting like Republicans when Republicans took control of the House under Newt.
They were aggressive and pushed the contract with America and a number of other reforms, but There was a difference because, you know, even after Bill Clinton was impeached, he had Dick Morris.
He went after triangulation and all that stuff.
And so there was more of a It's an effort to reach across the aisle.
So we got welfare reform back in the 90s in large part as a result of that.
But no, this Congress under Nancy Pelosi led by the squad starting in 2019, it was a different kind of experience being in the minority watching the liberal left try and steamroll their agenda through.
Well, hopefully you're going to be able to experience a little bit on the majority side here after November.
I tell people all the time, and they seem to forget this, because the eight years that the Democrats have been in power since really 92, 30 years, they've only been in power eight years.
But what they've done with those eight years has been devastating in many ways to the country, from Obamacare, Dodd-Frank, the infrastructure issues, the giving away money in COVID. And I think this is where they've overplayed it because they know that long-term policy will stick around because Congress is so hard to act to repeal things.
Your district, this is something I think that's become an issue in the campaigns this year, is the disconnect between Washington and districts, individual districts, whether it be Republican or Democrat, Tell everyone a little bit about your district and what makes it a little bit unique, especially even for Virginia, because most people just, you know, they look at Virginia and Youngkin's election as just this anomaly, but the vast majority of Virginia is very conservative.
It is.
It took all of Red Virginia to turn out in record numbers to overwhelm the liberal Northern Virginia election.
Component to elect Glenn Youngkin, our governor, I joked that he was either going to lose by 10 or win by 2, and he ended up winning by about 1.5.
And it's because he tapped into not just the outrage on the right over the march by the liberal left to undo all of the traditions and values of what has made America great,
but also The suburban moms and the folks up in the suburbs of Washington who were just starting to become aware of what was being taught during COVID to their kids, the woke agenda being pushed in these liberal school divisions in moderate suburban areas.
And so when they found out, when these parents found out that their kids were being They weren't necessarily being taught CRT because as has been pushed by the left, that's a grad school level course, but their teachers sure were being taught CRT and they were implementing CRT into their lesson plans at the And so they were mad.
They went to their school boards to try and express their anger, and they were thrown out, or worse, arrested, branded domestic terrorists by the Attorney General Merrick Garland.
And they weren't having it anymore.
So they turned...
Glenn Youngkin tapped into that.
And that's why he's our governor today.
My district's a whole other story.
It's a bunch of ruby red counties with a bunch of sapphire blue cities in the middle.
And so...
It's a different kind of environment when you go from a county fair to a city carnival or city festival, the different types of folks you'll meet.
We've got more universities than any other congressional district in the country, so that's what you encounter a lot of the time.
Well, it makes it, you know, the fun part of representing, you know, the republic that we've been, you know, granted the opportunity to serve in.
One of the interesting things, because a little bit from your staff, we've talked about this, the Biden New Green, you know, the New Green Deal agenda that we're seeing, and I have an interesting one for you, and I've been bringing this up, that the left can't keep their story straight, but yet they want to spend money to remove our dependence on fossil fuels and really coal, destroying our economy.
And I heard this the other day, Ben.
I'd love to get your take on it.
You know, the drought out west, California, Nevada, all those areas, and I remember about a 20-year, it's been about a 15-year drought.
And there was a main news article the other day that said, this is the worst it's been in 1,200 years.
And I got to thinking for a second.
I said, okay, I'm from North Georgia, but math is something I can do.
And that puts it at 800 AD. And I thought to myself, well, what was causing it to be so hot in 800 AD? It wasn't the combustion engine, it wasn't the population, it wasn't the cows and methane.
And it's just like they don't really think...
About what they're saying.
And I think this is why, I mean, look, there are human elements to global warming.
I've always said that.
But it's not everything that they're making it out to be.
But yet it's being the dominant discussion in Washington, D.C. I mean, is it really, as it appears now, I know it was when I was there for a little while, but you as well, it looks like it's ramped up this term that everything is about getting something done because, one, they're fearful of losing a house, but they're very committed to this ideological position.
Well, you put just the right terminology there when you said destroying the economy.
They're trying to roll back the Industrial Revolution.
That is their goal.
A lot of what they have done, the thing about climate change, and I'll put quotes around climate change, is that it gives them license to interfere in just about every area of the economy.
So you can talk about energy, but they also want to talk about highways and transportation.
That's why the infrastructure bill was such a bogus bill, because it was mostly Green New Deal.
And you want to talk about They're getting in the middle of our national security because they're saying, oh, well, climate change is a national security issue now, so we have to get involved in the Pentagon's budget.
Make all of our, you know, not just education with the school buses now being built electric at a cost that is just Ridiculous to comprehend.
It's everywhere.
It's almost a religion for a lot of these people.
And they are going to wreck the economy and the country, as you say, if they keep pursuing it to its logical conclusion.
Well, it is amazing, Ben.
And one of the things that just, you know, infuriated a lot of people is, look, you know, there's been issues in cities and where, you know, roads were planned and developments and industrial developments in a history, you know, that you have dividing of communities, you know, by race and others.
But this idea that you're passing an infrastructure bill and your main key component is racial justice of roads.
It goes over the top, which brings me to another conversation, and that is, what is up now with the Biden administration on $22 billion more in COVID funding?
That is a pretty ridiculous request on their part when they've got so much left over.
They are in the face of rapidly declining numbers.
Trying to prop up this pandemic policy where they can continue to funnel money to health districts, to big pharma, to all of their favorites in the name of this pandemic, which is, you know, we have Continue to see declining numbers.
So I don't know where that number came from.
I think that if I never have to wear another mask, it'll be a happy day.
And for them to continue to push for more PPE and more masking and all this stuff is just the wrong direction.
And so I don't think there's going to be support for it in Congress among Republicans or for more money for Ukraine Or for attaching even a gay marriage bill to a funding bill.
I think there's talk of that, but that's been discounted by Republicans and Democrats.
Is there any hope, Congressman?
I mean, looking at the issues with climate change, we'll revert back to climate, you know, this New Green Deal issue.
I mean, California right now is sort of living proof that we're nowhere close to their New Green utopia.
I mean, you've got...
The governor and their legislature out there said by 2035, I think it is no gasoline-powered cars, all this electric.
And right now, they honestly are having to tell people not to charge things and not to use electricity.
Is it...
I mean, does the Democrats in D.C. see this as...
Are they saying, well, this is just what we have to do?
Are they seeing how absurd this position really is?
Their policies are so detrimental, but their solutions are just as bad.
So they create the problem, and then when they realize that there's a problem, they...
I think that more government, more of their liberal policies are needed to solve the problem.
So just as an example, out in California, you've had record wildfires because they don't clear their forests.
They don't get rid of the underbrush that it acts really as kindling.
And what you have are these record wildfires.
Well, what those are doing is creating so much smog and smoke that it's making the solar panels less effective in California that they're needing to electrify, to create power for the grid.
As a result of their ridiculous environmental policies, their ridiculous environmental policies aren't working by even another level.
So it complicates things.
We've got a solution for What is rapid inflation and the energy crisis that we're in right now, it's energy independence, it's exploring on international parks and leasing more land for exploration.
The government's sitting on 5,500 lease applications right now, and that's what's creating these higher gas prices and higher energy prices, and this winter's going to be a doozy because of it.
Well, and I think, you know, Ben, as we look at this, I mean, they just continue down this ideological, you know, that's one of the things, let's turn to the election and hopefully putting y'all back in the majority.
I think that we're going to have to have a committed Republican caucus that is committed to getting things done, even if it is uncomfortable for some on the left, on the different positions of the Republican caucus.
We're going to have to come together to get our policies in because we're still dealing with Obamacare, Dodd-Frank, all this stuff that Democrats left over 12 years ago.
And we're not focusing on that.
I know McCarthy's coming out with his four-point plan.
We've got some other stuff.
Tell us what you're sensing from the caucus and from others as you're talking about elections.
I know the NRCC is giving y'all briefings, Emmer and the rest of them.
What are you sensing as far as people wanting a direction of the Republican Party, not just simply Joe Biden and the Democrats are horrible, terrible people and have bad policies, but what are we looking to do?
What are y'all giving voters to say, here's why you should let Republicans?
Well, we recognize that voters, at the very least, want to stop the madness that's going on in Washington, and a Republican House will be a block to the excesses of unified democratic control of government.
But they don't want us just to stop there.
They don't want us to only prevent We're not going to get there if all we do is win the House.
We're not going to get there in the last two years of the Biden administration unless we have a record turnout and a record Gain in the House and Senate, and Biden decides to pivot like Clinton did back after he lost the majority in 94. So if we can do that, we might be able to make some progress.
But more likely than not, we're going to have to reelect a Republican Congress in 2024 and elect a new president.
Patience has got to be our watchword.
We can't expect miracles once the House changes to Republicans.
This is a different Republican House than it has been in the past.
The Trump years have made for a more conservative I think he's an electorate, a base that is hungry for fighters, people who are going to go not just vote for conservative policies, but fight for conservative policies.
That's what I'm trying to do.
And I think you will see, you know, the McCarthy task forces that he has put forward are going to come out with really conservative legislation that's going to have near universal Republican support.
And that's because he's done a good job of Laying these themes out there, like the big tech, I'm on a big tech task force and I'm on a constitutional rights task force.
The big tech task force is led by Kathy McMorris-Rogers, who's going to be chair of the Commerce Committee.
We recognize we need to rein in big tech and we're going to have some specific legislation to do that.
And then Jim Jordan is heading up our constitutional agenda.
And that's going to be efforts to secure not just our Second Amendment rights, but also our First Amendment freedom of religion, freedom of speech.
Those are critical rights that are being infringed on by the left.
And they're really, frankly, authoritarian practices throughout big tech and big media.
So those are just some areas.
And I'm optimistic that we're going to hit the ground running when we take over in January.
Outstanding.
Of course, September is always the crazy month leading up to the October 1st deadline or September 30th deadline, however you want to look at it, for spending bills.
A lot of things the Democrats are desperate to get done before the election, and really this is their last month to do it.
Look, I don't think anybody expects anything but a CR. But I'm getting word from some other members, sort of talking back channel with some others, that this, you know, at the end of the day, I do believe they'll get the CR done.
They're going to have to, in some ways, to do this, be pressured to do it.
But I've also believed this is their view as a last chance to legislate in some ways.
What should Americans be looking for in the next few weeks in Washington dealing with the CR and dealing with some of the things you've already mentioned possibly being attached to this?
What concerns you?
What are y'all looking for and how can you maybe help stop some of it?
Well, the big fight is going on behind the scenes right now between really the Senate Republicans and the House Republicans.
Senate Republicans are fine with a short-term CR that gets us past the election.
But not into the next year when we take over the House.
They're satisfied with just a short-term month or two to get us to mid-December where the big spenders on both sides of the aisle in the Senate can cut a big omnibus deal and fund the government.
What conservatives in the House are saying is, no, we want a CR that gets us into the new Congress mid-January, and then a Republican Congress can negotiate on the final legislation what the omnibus spending bill will look like.
Will it include COVID money, will it include?
Ukraine money, will it include?
A gay marriage authorization or whatever they're talking about doing?
I don't think it will include much.
I think it will be clean.
The question is how long will it be?
Well folks, Ben is laid out, Congressman is laid out for, really it's going to be a busy September, but also I think a vision for what can happen if the Republicans do take back over the House, hopefully get the Senate, still be the triangulation with the White House because Biden will still be there for two more years, but I think long term we've got to do a better job looking at that.
Congressman, thanks for being a part of the podcast.
You gave some great information and now you've got to go to work.
