Concerns About Putin's Board 00:15:37
It's nice to be with a member who knows what they're talking about.
You guys did agree to the civility, all right?
He owes my son $10 from a bad person.
That's fighting words right now.
I'm glad I'm not in charge.
I'm thrilled to be on the show with him.
There are not shows like this, right?
Incentivizing that relationship.
Ceasefire, Friday nights on C-SPAN.
C-SPAN, democracy unfiltered.
We're funded by these television companies and more, including Charter Communications.

Charter Communications supports C-SPAN as a public service, along with these other television providers, giving you a front-row seat to democracy.
Coming up on C-SPAN's Washington Journal, New Jersey Democratic Congressman Donald Norcross will talk about the role of ICE, the Trump administration's foreign policy goals, and other news of the day.
Then Washington Times reporter Jeff Mordock talks about President Trump's announcement of a proposed framework deal on Greenland.
Washington Journal starts now.
Good morning.
It's Thursday, January 22nd.
Yesterday, President Trump spoke for about an hour and 10 minutes at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
He said he would not use force to seize Greenland, but called for immediate talks for the U.S. to purchase the island.
The president also warned that the U.S. would remember who stands in the way.
Following the speech, President Trump met with NATO's Secretary General and announced that there was a framework for an agreement.
As a result, he is dropping his threats of tariffs on European allies.
This morning, we're getting your reaction to the President's speech and subsequent announcements on Greenland.
Here's how to reach us.
Democrats, 202748-8000.

And we're on social media, facebook.com/slash C-SPAN, an ex at C-SPANWJ.
Welcome to today's two-hour Washington Journal.
The House is expected to gavel in at 9 a.m. and we'll take you there.
Let's start with President Trump's post on True Social.
He posted this yesterday at 2.27 p.m. and he said this.
Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Ruda, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic region.
This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America and all NATO nations.
Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st.
Additional discussions are being held concerning the Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland.
Further information will be made available as discussions progress.
Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations.
This is the New York Times with this headline.
Trump says he has a framework for a Greenland deal as NATO mulls U.S. sovereignty over bases.
It says that President Trump said Wednesday that he had reached the framework of a deal with NATO over Greenland's future hours after alliance officials separately discussed the possibility of the U.S. obtaining sovereignty over land from military bases.
Mr. Trump's announcement was among a series of moves on Wednesday that appeared to draw the United States back from the possibility of military and economic conflict with his allies over Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark.
It says that he withdrew the threat of additional tariffs from European allies that had resisted his insistence on owning Greenland and said he would not use force to assert American ownership.
And here is President Trump yesterday in Davos taking questions about this topic from reporters.
What did Mark Ruth say?
Well, he's a great leader.
I think he's fantastic.
The Secretary General was representing the other side, which is really us too, because, you know, we're a very important member of NATO.
I've done a lot for NATO.
And it's really nice.
I mean, it's a deal that everybody's very happy with.
Does it still include you?
Does it still include the United States having ownership of Greenland like you've said you wanted?
It's a long-term deal.
It's the ultimate long-term deal.
And I think it puts everybody in a really good position, especially as it pertains to security and minerals and everything else.
How long is it, Mr. President?
I've already spoken for other European leader.
Have you already spoken for other European leaders?
Yes, I have.
How long would the deal be, Mr. President?
Infinite.
There is no time limit.
It's forever.
And how would you ratify the deal if there'd be money involved?
It's signed forever.
But you haven't signed anything yet, right?
It's a deal that's forever.
Will there be an old man anyway, Mr. President?
Will there be an aim?
No money or anything.
What happens is people are out there and they're working there right now.
They're working the details of the deal.
But it's what's called an infinite deal.
It's forever.
You talked about being concerned, Mr. President, about Russia trying to come and take over Greenland.
If you're worried that Putin would do something like that, why invite him to join your board of peace?
Because we want everybody.
We want all nations.
We want all nations where people have control, people have power.
That way we're never going to have a problem.
This is the greatest board ever assembled.
And everybody wants to be on it.
But yeah, I have some controversial people on it, but these are people that get the job done.
These are people that have tremendous influence.
If I put all babies on the board, there wouldn't be very much.
So he was invited.
He's accepted.
Many people have accepted.
I think I don't know of anybody that hasn't accepted.
But it's going to be great.
I think the Board of Peace will be the most prestigious board ever, and it's going to get a lot of work done that the United Nations should have done.
And we'll work with the United Nations, but the Board of Peace is going to be special.
We're going to have peace.
It started off with Gaza, the Middle East.
We've got peace in the Middle East.
Tremendous peace in the Middle East.
Nobody thought that was possible.
And that happened by taking out the Iran nuclear threat.
Without that, it could have never happened.
But the board is going to be, I think, really fantastic.
And I think it'll be the most prestigious board of any board ever in world history.
That was the president yesterday in Davos.
We do have all of the we have on our website, c-span.org, all of the video that we have from Davos and the World Economic Forum if you'd like to.
If you missed anything, you can go back and watch.
Darrell, Columbus, Georgia, Democrat, you're on the air.
Good morning.
Hey, Mimi, how you doing?
Good.
Good, yes.
Well, Taco Trump has kicking out again.
We all know that taco stands for Trump always chickens out.
This thing with Greenland, this deal has already been in existence for over 75 years now.
So there's not going to be no new deal.
He just did all this yesterday to try to save faith because he is embarrassed.
I'm glad that Europe, the Europeans, stood up against him.
And I'm also concerned about this thing with this board of peace with Vladimir Putin being on the board.
And Vladimir Putin has already paid his $1 billion.
So this was never about no national security.
So if you're going to bring Vladimir Putin in, and he's on your board, along with Victor Orban and all these other crazies, it's never about no national security.
America better wake up.
And also, one other quick thing.
I'm glad Jack Smith thing is coming on today.
Thank y'all, C-SPAN, for that.
And Republicans have also told me to stop calling Trump a pedophile.
So I will stop.
My wife told me to stop doing it too.
So instead of calling him a pedophile, I just call him a child toucher.
How about that?
Okay, Darrell.
And he did mention that hearing today.
This is in front of the House.
Judiciary Committee former Special Counsel Jack Smith will be testifying.
We'll be carrying that live.
That starts at 10 a.m. Eastern Time.
That's on C-SPAN too.
And we will be re-airing it.
We'll also be putting it on our website, c-span.org.
You can also watch it on the app.
So that does come up today at 10.
Vincent, Gaithersburg, Maryland, Independent Line.
Good morning.
Yes, good morning.
And very quickly, in response to that call, since you let that caller talk, call Trump a President Trump a pedophile in sibling words.
I'd like to remind people, and you folks should remind people too, that you news folks, President Trump turned Epstein in.
President Trump kicked Epstein out of his mar-a-lago home, and many of the women said Trump never touched him.
All right, but let me stick to the topic here.
You know, nothing will be worth nothing to us if Trump doesn't, if we don't get Greenland.
It's strategic.
You can forget about your debts, your olds, and all the other things, because we won't have a country.
China and Russia will blow us away.
That is military.
That is strategic.
We need Greenland.
And there's no intention of putting boots down on the ground.
Let me ask you, since you're former military, can we achieve our national security interests without actually owning Greenland by having that base, by maybe having another base if we need it?
What are your thoughts on that?
Absolutely.
But does it make sense to lease, defend leasing?
There's a lot of, the Democrats could work all around the fact that it's leased, and they will.
Democrats hate America.
You Democrats hate us.
But yes, it makes absolute sense to make it a part of the United States.
Leasing won't work.
Leasing won't work.
But hasn't it worked up until now?
I mean, that's the argument being made.
No, it hasn't worked.
And you know what hasn't worked?
Because there's so much static against it.
These foreign countries, whose country will not be attacked, they're not in the line of fire.
We're in the line of fire.
Own it and make it one of a part of the United States.
It gives us more authority to defend it.
We're not going to defend something we just lease.
All right, Vincent.
And this is what the Danish prime minister said in a statement.
He said this: NATO is fully aware of the Kingdom of Denmark's position.
We can negotiate about everything politically: security, investments, the economy, but we cannot negotiate about our sovereignty.
I have been informed that this has not been the case either.
And of course, only Denmark and Greenland themselves can make decisions on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland.
The Kingdom of Denmark continues to seek a constructive dialogue with allies on how we can strengthen security in the Arctic, including the United States' Golden Dome, provided that this takes place with respect for our territorial integrity.
That was reported in Politico.
Kevin Staten Island, New York, Republican.
Hi, Kevin.
Hi, good morning.
Nice to have you.
Thank you to having me on.
A lot of people are anti-Trump that are calling in anyway.
But realistically, when you look at strategic pinpointing, Russia, at one point in time of the year, can walk right across the Bering Sea because it's so low.
But the idea is, Iceland and Greenland, all of these areas are strategic points in maintaining security of the United States.
I mean, if you look at Putin, Putin is former KGB.
He's like a rabid dog at times.
China is their ally.
I mean, they're both communist nations.
So realistically, the bridges that Obama and Biden had burned and sold out our country, Trump advance are trying to advance us back to superiority and protect our nation.
And if you look at what's going on abroad with the Islamic Republic Iran, which are basically their allies also, they're attacking places of worship now in New York.
So, I mean, we're dealing with a very serious critical point, and Trump is trying to do the best he can at what he has to work with.
But he has a lot of opposition because there's a lot of iniquities that the Democrats have committed, and they're trying to blow smoke.
All right.
You know.
And then Brooklyn, New York, Democrat, is it Alexander?
Yes, yes.
Hi.
Good morning.
Good morning.
Thank you for taking my call.
Yeah, I don't even know where to start with this president.
He made a complete fool of himself yesterday at Davos.
He insulted the president of France, said that Carney, the PM of Canada, was alive, and Canada is alive only because of him.
Insulted Switzerland.
And then he says that he needs a piece of ice because it's strategic to the United States.
I mean, just think about that for a second to all of your viewers and listeners.
This is where we are at.
That the president of this country goes and makes a fool of himself in front of Davos and says that NATO owes him because NATO has done nothing for the United States.
Half Have Literacy Issues 00:04:16
Well, you know who owns U.S. debt to all you people out there that are saying that Trump is the best thing in the world?
The UK, Canada, China, Japan, they own our debt.
And if they wanted to, they could just sell those treasuries and destroy the economy of this country.
So all I will say, and I will finish with this, someone maybe two days ago said that the biggest problem in this country is that people, half of the people of this country, have less than a 12-year-old reading capacity.
That is the problem.
The stupidity of the people of this country to think that somehow the United States is the greatest thing in the world.
Well, guess what?
This president is making all of these countries go to China.
And this country is now literally just a third-rate country.
And it is going to collapse even further because of the stupidity of people like this president and the people that follow him.
All right, Alexander.
And this is what he mentioned about Canada.
This is Axios.
It says, President Trump said in Davos on Wednesday that Canada should be, quote, grateful to the U.S. for the freebies it receives because of the two nations' relationship.
Trump's dig at Canada came a day after Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered his own warning at the World Economic Forum over the rupture of the world order.
Quote, Canada lives because of the United States.
Trump said Wednesday before taking a direct jab at Carney.
Quote, remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.
Jim in Kansas, Independent Line, you're on the air.
Yes, good morning, Mimi.
You're looking great this morning.
Thank you.
Go ahead.
Yeah, what I'm calling out, and my point is that Trump would never invade Greenland because military generals wouldn't do it, wouldn't obey it.
Without Congress declaring war just on his whim, they would never do it.
Because some of these people have fought and died with us in other wars, and just because he's mad at them or he wants something, they would refuse it.
You think so, Jim?
Because, I mean, we have the example of Venezuela.
Congress didn't approve that either.
Well, there's a difference between going after a person who is a drug runner that has a warrant against him.
There's a difference going after one person than invading a country that has been to our support and fought and died with us.
They wouldn't have done it.
And Hag Seth, who I call Jethro Bodine, couldn't convince him to do it.
And I firmly believe that our generals wouldn't do it.
All right, Jim, let's talk to Sean in Milton, Florida.
Democrat, good morning, Sean.
Good morning.
This is ridiculous.
I keep hearing all these guys that are claiming to be veterans and saying that they have the inside scoop on how this is going to go down.
We can still maintain our national security in working with these host nations as we have for the last 75 years.
There are status of forces agreements that are put in place so that we act a certain way in the interest of the country that we're going to, as well as the interest of our own strategic needs.
I spent 21 years in the Navy.
I was a cold warrior.
I studied the two countries that he's worried about, and he's got it wrong.
So, Sean, tell us about, so there's this issue of the ice melting around the area, giving it more access for ships, and that that would in turn give Russia and China more access to the Arctic.
Can you explain how that might change the dynamics, if at all, of the security situation?
Security, no, economically, yes.
And that's the biggest thing that he's worried about.
If you really look at what he's been doing lately, his concentration on Greenland, his mention of the Panama Canal, Cuba, the investment that he made in Argentina, those are all strategic choke points that all of those nations have put an interest in.
Trump's Point of View 00:15:18
Remember, he claimed that China took over the Panama Canal and built all those bases there.
Well, they built maintenance facilities for their ships that are transversing the Panama Canal.
So he's got no water.
All right.
And this is CNN reporting with this headline: Trump unveils Board of Peace ahead of Zelensky meeting in Davos.
We are expecting the President to meet with Zelensky before he heads back to Washington, and we're watching that.
We will, of course, bring you any comments or pictures of that as it happens.
But it says this: that U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled his Board of Peace in Davos, Switzerland with the signing ceremony attended by fewer than 20 countries.
Trump said he wants the board tasked with rebuilding Gaza and resolving global conflicts to work with the United Nations, even as he criticized the UN for failing to live up to its potential.
Continuing, Trump will meet Ukrainian President Zelensky, according to two sources.
U.S. Envoy Steve Witkoff said negotiations to end Russia's war were, quote, down to one issue, which a European official confirmed to CNN was related to territory.
And here is Gil in Jamestown, North Carolina.
Democrat, hi, Gil.
Hi, good morning, and thanks for letting me share a few of my comments on this wonderful forum.
First, I'd like to say Ish bin ein Greenlander.
So I'm in full support of the residents of Greenland, and our president embarrassed himself and embarrassed our country by referring to Greenland as Iceland three times in Davos.
And for an administration that doesn't believe in climate change and global warming, you know, that's certainly happening in Greenland.
And so, yes, the shipping lanes are becoming more free.
His demeaning of our allies and NATO, Canada, Denmark, who's been an initial member of NATO and whose men and women served after we were attacked on 9-11, is just disturbing and quite demeaning.
And what I'd like to say just in conclusion is that I wish that we had a woman president like Angela Merkel, like Jacinda Ardenn, or like Claudia Scheinbaum in Mexico.
If we had a woman running this country, I think that we would have better results in terms of this narcissistic, manosphere, you know, ultra-uber saying that we want to have hegemony over all of the northern hemisphere.
We're running in the wrong direction, and I pray to God that things are going to change and change very soon.
All right.
And we are taking your calls this morning on Davos, the news out of Davos about Greenland, about the Board of Peace.
If you'd like to weigh in on that as well, the lines are on the screen.
Democrats are on 202, 748, 8000.
Republicans 202, 748, 8001.
And Independents 202, 748, 8002.
Regarding the use of military force to acquire Greenland, here's what the President said yesterday.
We never asked for anything and we never got anything.
We probably won't get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force where we would be, frankly, unstoppable.
But I won't do that.
Okay, now everyone's saying, oh, good.
That's probably the biggest statement I made because people thought I would use force.
I don't have to use force.
I don't want to use force.
I won't use force.
All the United States is asking for is a place called Greenland where we already had it as a trustee, but respectfully returned it back to Denmark not long ago after we defeated the Germans, the Japanese, the Italians, and others in World War II.
We gave it back to them.
We were a powerful force then, but we are a much more powerful force now.
And here is James calling us from Texas Independent Line.
Good morning.
Yes, ma'am.
I think Donald Trump and NATO are coming to an agreement here, and they're trying to do this thing the best way for everybody in the world, the free people of the world.
And I think Donald Trump and NATO, they've already got an outline agreement pretty well reached.
And they're trying to make it better.
And they'll make the Greenland people very happy.
They'll make them rich, probably.
How's that, James?
Only the far radical left think that they're going to do bad things.
Only the radical left, the ones that's invading churches and acting a fool and doing the fraud in Minnesota that y'all never cover.
Y'all never cover that.
The Minnesota fraud, entering the churches, and just getting us back to the Davos speech.
You said that this will make Greenlanders rich.
Tell me how that would happen.
Between NATO and America, they will help the Greenland people immensely.
You watch at the end of this deal.
And Trump will also get this economy.
It's already happening.
He will also get this economy booming.
And the Democrats want to do is invade churches that y'all don't never cover.
They run into churches and act a radical fool.
That's what they do.
All right.
And here's Cal in Oklahoma, Democrat.
Hi, Cal.
Good morning.
Good morning.
How are you?
Good.
What do you think?
I think part of the problem is what I just had to listen to on the fellow from Texas.
I do not understand where those ideas come from.
Let me give you a little bit of mine.
32-year Air Force veteran assignments through Iceland, Panama, and I was stationed in Europe when the Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia.
So I admit my view is biased.
However, the bottom line is we cannot, I cannot trust anything the president says.
He is an inveterate liar from the time that he peddled real estate in New York City.
I must give credit to the leaders, especially the Canadian leader, but also France and England for finally saying enough is enough.
This issue is about land.
Trump will not stop until he is stopped because his goal is the ownership of Greenland for the reasons as he stated.
But that reason orients, the valid reason is the structure of the Arctic control for the military.
We have the authority from the agreement in 1951 to deal with that issue.
That could be resolved that way.
That is not what he wants.
So, Cal, do you think he's still going to pursue outright ownership of Greenland given this agreement with the NATO general secretary?
I absolutely do.
He's playing rope a dope.
If you'll just view how he's always operated, it's the most extreme position to start with.
Then, when he's cornered, he'll back up temporarily, but that does not mean he will stop.
No, he will go as far as he can with those that cooperate with him like this ridiculous group of individuals sitting there, his peace group.
My God, look at the background of those people.
He'll be back at it until we're finally rid of this guy in three years, hopefully.
All right, Cal.
And PolitiFact has an article fact-checking the Trump speech from yesterday in Davos.
This is what they said.
So, President Trump said, quote, we gave Greenland back.
PolitiFact says that that is misleading.
After Germany invaded Denmark, the U.S. assumed responsibility for Greenland's defense and established a military presence on the island that remains today, albeit in diminished scope.
The U.S. never possessed the nation, so it could not have given it back.
Trump was more accurate when he said that during World War II, quote, we saved Greenland and successfully prevented our enemies from gaining a foothold in our hemisphere.
It continues.
In 2019, Denmark said that they would spend over $200 million to strengthen Greenland's defenses.
But as you know, they spent less than 1% of that amount.
This is accurate according to news reports.
2019, Denmark pledged to invest around $200 million on military spending in Greenland.
At the time, Trump had talked about wanting to buy the territory.
However, 2024, a Danish news outlet reported that Denmark had only spent about 1% of the money.
That's at PolitiFact if you want to see more on that.
Here is Steve in Indianapolis, Indiana, Republican.
Hi, Steve.
Hi, thanks for having me on.
I'm sitting here watching, and I don't understand the Democrats.
All they want to do is block everything.
Why don't they just try to get together and make this country great?
I think we're heading in the right direction.
That's all I really got to say.
Yeah, so Steve, in this concept of acquiring Greenland, how would you, would you be in favor of that?
Would you want Democrats to be on board with that?
I would like Democrats just to be on board.
I mean, Jesus Christ, they fight every single thing that's going on.
No matter what it is, we're not doing that.
We're voting against that.
That's all they do.
And you said that you wanted them to be on board to make America great again.
How is that?
How would acquiring Greenland do that, in your opinion?
Well, I don't know whether Greenland ought to be taken over by the United States.
That's probably quite an expense to the United States.
What they should do is set up, and I think that they have the ability and the willingness to put this golden dome everywhere.
Now, Canada doesn't want it because I don't know what Canada's doing.
I really don't understand socialism because who the hell wants to be run by the government?
You want to run yourself.
You know, it's all right.
Let's hear from Jay next in Alabama, Independent Line.
Hi, Jay.
Hey, hi.
Thanks for C-SPAN.
Boy, so this guy wants to run his own life and he's for Trump.
I appreciate the time.
First thing I wanted to say is a couple callers back said that Greenlanders will be rich if we take over Greenland.
Does the money come?
Are we rich?
Is America rich?
Do we get any money, or does it just go to these political elites, the billionaires, you know, private groups and such?
Do we get the money?
Does it ever come to us?
So how does this make them rich?
Frankly, I think they're already rich.
They have a rich culture.
They don't really need money.
So they're already rich.
We're so money-hungry here.
So the money doesn't come to the people.
That's my main point.
Another caller back said something about if we had a woman president, forgive me, but we have too many women leaders.
I don't want to offend anybody.
We need virtue leading this country.
We need a man, a man's point of view.
Everything is from the women's winds.
And I'm telling you, it's deteriorating our country.
Last thing I'd like to say is the church.
Wait, wait, wait, wait.
You're going to have to explain that.
We need it from a man's point of view because women are not virtuous.
Men see things more virtuous.
I mean, where'd you get that idea?
Women are virtuous.
Well, because that's what was.
But they're less virtuous than men?
Men see things in a higher virtue.
It's just that's why men, God, man, and woman, I don't want to, that wasn't my main point.
Okay, what's your main point?
My main point is the church shooting, I mean, the church shooting, the church incident the other day, the elephant in the room, it's hard for me to even walk in my house.
What if that was a synagogue?
What if it was a synagogue?
Why is it not important when it comes to a Christian church?
That's my main point.
What is going on here?
And here's my last point: this: Trump needs to be here in this country.
He needs to be here.
He needs to be a city to city to city, make positive statements, virtuous statements to bring us together.
That's what I meant.
Men see everybody.
They want everybody around them to be happy.
I know women do too, but there's a quadrum in this country with female leadership.
All right, we got that point.
And this is Tad in Burrellville, Rhode Island, Democrat.
Good morning, Tad.
Good morning, Nini.
Thank you for taking my call.
My wife has never been to old Quebec City, so we're planning to go up to see old Quebec City this summer.
President Trump's Golden Dome Plan 00:10:48
And we're going to apologize to every Canadian that we meet on behalf of all the Democrats in the States.
Thank you for your time.
All right.
And a caller had mentioned the Golden Dome.
This is some information for you on that from the Wall Street Journal.
It says, President Trump said Wednesday that part of his desire to claim Greenland stems from his plan for a golden dome missile defense system, an array of sensors and interceptors that could defend North America and other U.S. territory from foreign attack.
Inspired by Israel's Iron Dome, officials envision the project as a cutting-edge system of space and ground technology stretching across the country.
The project is in very early stages and the administration has yet to release details over how it will operate or its design.
Trump said that Canada would also be protected by the proposed Golden Dome system.
And earlier this morning, President Trump spoke at the first Board of Peace meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
It's a U.S.-led organization meant to oversee the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and other issues around the world.
Here's a portion of his remarks.
This board has the chance to be one of the most consequential bodies ever created.
And it's my enormous honor to serve as its chairman.
I was very honored when they asked me to do it.
We had an idea to do it, and then they came.
They said, you be the chairman.
But I take it very seriously.
We have a great group of people and incredible young people that are leading it from within.
It's running beautifully, started already.
And every country, just about every country, wants to be a part of it.
There's tremendous potential with the United Nations.
And I think the combination of the Board of Peace with the kind of people we have here, coupled with the United Nations, can be something very, very unique for the world.
For the world, this isn't United States.
This is for the world.
As everyone can see today, the first steps toward a brighter day for the Middle East and a much safer future for the world are unfolding right before your very eyes.
Together, we are in a position to have an incredible chance.
I don't even call it a chance.
I think it's going to happen.
To end decades of suffering, stop generations of hatred and bloodshed, and forge a beautiful, everlasting, and glorious peace for that region and for the whole region of the world, because I'm calling the world a region.
The world is a region.
We're going to have peace in the world.
And boy, would that be a great legacy for all of us.
Everybody in this room is a star, or you wouldn't be here.
There's a reason that you're here.
And you're all stars.
You're the biggest people, the most important people in the world, most powerful people in the world.
And when you use that genius that you have, that very unusual, very inspired genius, when you use that for peace, the opposite of peace has no chance.
And that was very early this morning.
And if you were not up that early, we are going to be airing the full remarks, President Trump's full remarks here on C-SPAN at 9.30 p.m.
So you can watch that here on C-SPAN.
You can also see that on our app, C-SPANNOW and C-SPAN.org.
By the way, it's a U.S.-led organization.
It's meant to oversee the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Canada, Egypt, Hungary, and Israel are among the nations that have accepted an invitation to join that ward.
Marie in New York, Independent Line.
Hi, Marie.
Yes.
Hi.
Good morning.
Morning.
Can you hear me?
Yes, go right ahead.
Okay.
So, yeah, I want to speak to a couple of the callers that's discussing the situation in Davos.
A little bit concerned about how Donald Trump presented himself and represented his country.
I don't think that everything we do is about finance.
That peace board that he's created, his administration has created.
I'm looking at people on there.
The president of, oh, gosh, I can't believe I can't remember.
Argentina, who we just gave $40 billion to, he's sitting on the board.
He's pledging $1 billion.
Meanwhile, we just gave him $40 billion.
Also, I have some concerns about people in this country, especially men, claiming that there are too many women.
Women have made sacrifices, raising families, going to college, getting past a 10th grade reading level.
There are many contributions that women have to offer.
And they think critically about the future of this country.
This country is not about Democrats or Republicans.
This country is about Americans working together to improve our quality of life.
Just like Greenland, they have free health care.
Why would they want to be a part of this country?
They're not run by capitalism.
They're more concerned about their quality of life.
The people in this country, they need to do a lot of work.
They need to do a lot of research about what is happening.
And men need to get educated.
I hear these men call, and they sound like they have fifth grade educations.
This is embarrassing.
This is really embarrassing.
We have to do better.
All of us.
All right, Marie.
And the Washington Post has a map of the countries that have been invited.
So that's yellow.
Accepted is in green and declined is in red.
And you can see that at the Washington Post if you'd like to take a look.
It says the European Commission was also invited to the board.
Buddy Republican in Pennsylvania, you're on the air, buddy.
Hey, how you doing?
Good.
Hey, listen, all I got to say is that I voted for Trump.
I voted for his policies, and I agree 100% with him.
And I got to say that we spent like a trillion dollars on NATO.
I think $985 billion.
And the compliant country spent about $585 billion.
Is that true?
I don't know if those numbers are accurate.
I don't have that information.
Well, I heard it on CNN and I heard it on Fox News.
So if we spend that kind of money, we should have a lot of say.
You mean since the founding of NATO?
Or since when?
Or in one year?
I'm not really accurate.
I just know we spent a lot of money.
I know it was like a trillion dollars.
I heard it on CNN.
Okay.
And I heard it on Fox News.
So the question when we're talking about spending on NATO is, does it mean that we're spending that much money on our defense?
That's our defense budget, which is pretty accurate for one year.
Or is that something else that's being paid?
That's something else that's combined with NATO.
Okay.
You know, so, and, you know, I mean, they would lose without, I mean, I come from a military background, and they would lose.
NATO would lose without America because China is very powerful.
And when I hear the guys that served in the military, you know, my nephew was in Afghanistan and Iraq.
My dad was a Marine.
You know, they hear the other side.
So, you know, Trump's policies, you know, this is what I voted for.
And people don't like it, and that's fine.
I accept that.
I have no problem with that.
And, you know, we'll see in the midterm elections.
They like it.
You know, the Republicans will win.
They don't like it, the Democrats.
I call it adjustment, because then if the Republicans lose, they're going to have to adjust.
Democrats lose, they're going to have to adjust.
All right, buddy, and let's take a look at some member tweets on X. Here's Senator Jim Banks, who says this: President Trump is the greatest dealmaker that we've ever had in the White House.
He will lead a deal for Greenland that puts America, our hemisphere, and our interests first.
Congressman Robert Garcia, Trump's obsession with acquiring Greenland is shameful, and it is beneath the presidency and our country.
We must oppose these attacks on our allies and focus instead on improving the lives of Americans.
Senator Chris Kuhn says, to be clear, Greenland and Denmark have always been willing to work with us on Arctic security and economic development.
Trump could have gotten what we needed without antagonizing our NATO allies.
Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock says, don't Republicans in Congress get tired of this president walking us to the edge of economic disaster over and over again for no reason?
This time, he almost started a trade war with Europe because he wants Greenland.
Who knows what will be next?
When will it be enough?
And Representative Andy Ogle says, Denmark has failed in Greenland, and it's affecting American safety.
America first means having Greenland.
Here's Beverly in Bellwood, Illinois.
Democrat, good morning.
I was supposed to comment on Greenland, but this man is, you know what he's good at?
Chaos.
Have it.
He has the whole country on edge.
I don't know why the Republicans can't see it.
They're fans.
When you're a fan of somebody, you can't rationalize with them.
Fonda said it best last night.
She said, there is no left, there is no right.
Dismantling United States? 00:07:20
There's right and wrong.
And this man is wrong.
He has poor Minnesota on fire.
He caused chaos in our own country.
He's treating them like Netanyahu did Gaza.
In fact, I'm just, it's horrible where they're being treated in our own United States.
Why would Greenland want to be a part of us now?
I don't even want to be a part of us.
This man is, I don't want to use the word authoritarian because people would come at you and say, no, no, no, that's not true.
Because these people don't know history.
If you read history and Hitler, that's what he is right now.
All right, Beverly, this is ABC 7 with this.
Governor Newsom's scheduled Davos appearance abruptly canceled blames White House pressure.
It says that his office said that Wednesday that a scheduled appearance at the World Economic Forum was abruptly canceled at the last minute, accusing the White House of applying pressure to block the governor from taking the stage.
Newsom had been set to participate in a fireside chat hosted by Fortune magazine at USA House, the official U.S. venue at the forum.
His team says organizers informed them shortly before the event that the appearance was pulled due to a, quote, venue-level decision not to include an elected U.S. official in Wednesday's programming.
And he did speak, though, to Semaphore's Ben Smith, and he addressed that cancellation at the Fortune event.
But here's a portion of that.
And what happened here in Davos?
I was going to speak last night.
It was a well-established event at the USA House.
A simple conversation, discussion.
After Trump's speech, they made sure that I didn't.
They made sure it was canceled.
And that's what's happening in the United States of America.
Freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, freedom of speech.
It's America in reverse.
They're censoring historical facts.
They're rewriting history.
They're censoring books, 4,340 books, libraries, and in schools banned in the United States of America.
You're watching institutions, any institution of independent thinking is under assault and attack by the Trump administration.
You're seeing what's playing out in the streets of American cities, what played out in California, the second largest city in the United States of America.
4,000 National Guard were federalized.
700 active duty Marines were not sent overseas.
They were sent to my largest city in the state of California.
Massed men.
Guy Greg Bavino, dressed up.
It's as if he literally went on eBay and purchased SS garb.
Greg Bervino, secret police, private army, masked men, people disappearing, quite literally, no due process.
Windows being smashed.
Seatbelts on, being, you know, literally just sort of cut off.
People dragged in the streets.
Kids separated from families, knocking on doors, racially profiling American citizens.
So is it surprising the Trump administration didn't like my commentary and wanted to make sure that I was not allowed to speak?
No.
It's consistent with this administration and their authoritarian tendencies.
Forgive me.
These are objective facts.
Here's Barry in Texas, Republican.
Good morning.
Good morning, ma'am.
I'm so glad for this opportunity.
You know, if U.S. wants Greenland to fulfill their objective, so Russia is okay to take Ukraine and these other nations for their objective.
That just sounds like a very good, valid point.
Even though I don't like it, you know, I'm now more than ever so disappointed in this man.
He speaks disgustingly about other people.
He calls women nasty.
He look at who is calling people nasty.
Someone with so much convictions.
Somebody who should be in jail.
Going to other countries and taking out other people and putting them in custody.
Now I'm upset.
Very, very upset.
This man needs some correction.
Goes up there on stage and talking everything bad about everybody.
Everything bad.
He looks disgusting on the TV, honestly.
Look at him.
Barry, you are a Republican.
Did you vote for President Trump in this last election?
But never again.
I wouldn't.
If he gave me $100 million to vote for him, I wouldn't vote for him.
I would take the money and go vote for somebody else.
Okay.
Glad to take his money.
Here's Roland in Detroit, Michigan, Independent.
You're on the air, Roland.
Grand Rising to you.
I just want to say first, Trump, you play something.
Trump said, Everybody is a star.
It reminded me of the song by Sly in the Stamily Stone.
You remember that song?
Nope.
Everybody's a star.
Okay.
Sorry.
It's a great song.
But I think what's going on from my humble self, that Trump is leading a new world order to dismantle the United States because it does not fit into the future world.
It has too much diversity and social issues.
They want a clean slate in America.
And I think that's what's going on.
Dismantle the world, Roland?
No, dismantle the United States.
Dismantle the United States.
They're trying to dismantle the United States.
Why would he want to do that?
Because the people who run the world think it's too diverse in America.
Too many ethnic groups and ideals and languages, which seems like a beautiful thing for humanity, of course.
But these people, they don't think like that.
They want a clean slate.
They want a one-way kind of world.
And, you know, Trump running around the world is distracting to that premise that the United States is being unraveled.
And I don't know what we're going to do about it.
But it's a lot of intellects out there, social scientists who are saying the same thing.
But, I mean, just look at Congress, for instance.
They've been shut down.
I've never, even, you know, the Democrats, the Republicans, they talk about each other, but they're in the same locked room.
Policy Passed: Defense Cutbacks 00:07:30
They just sit there and it's just amazing.
I don't know.
Mimi?
Yes.
More importantly, enjoy your day.
Thank you.
You too, Roland.
And speaking of Congress, a quick update for you.
Punchbowl News this morning mentioned that the Rules Committee, the House Rules Committee meeting today at 7.30 a.m.
This morning, there are eight days until the next shutdown deadline.
House Republican leaders will move today to get a rule out of the Rules Committee adopted on the floor and then pass a four-bill $1.2 trillion spending package covering the Pentagon, Transportation HUD, Labor HHS, and the Department of Homeland Security.
And we just got this on X from Jake Sherman of Punch Bowl News, who says that the House Republican leadership has a deal with the Midwestern holdouts who were demanding a year-round sale of E-15 in the funding bill, and that the House Republicans will set up a rural energy council to negotiate.
Joshua, Illinois, Democrat, you're on the air.
Hi, good morning.
Thank you for the opportunity.
I just wanted to start off by asking Republicans how many times you have to hear the president say concepts of a plan.
And, you know, I've been calling MAGA Republicans a cult since January 6th, 2021, because they refuse to use their ears or their eyes and use evidence to show that Trump is not here to help the American people.
In his first administration, the only policy he passed is a text cut for the break.
In his second administration, the only policy he passed is another textbook, Trex Break for the Rich.
I mean, when he says concepts of a plan, this is an unprepared, almost senile man to have no idea what he's doing on the world stage.
And when you have other world leaders like the Irish leader or other Scandinavian countries, you know, speaking and calling Trump a fascist, this is not Trump derangement syndrome.
This is opinions from other people that have a different perspective.
And again, the MAGA Republicans refuse to watch this.
And if I can end on one thing, a different topic today, Jack Smith will be on Capitol Hill.
He'll be interviewed.
But I want to remind everyone, you know, of the criminal intent of the White House.
Everybody should know that the White House shut down their phones on January 6th to cover all criminal activity.
If you're a criminal, what's the first thing you do?
Turn off your phone or leave the phone behind because you have criminal intent.
This is proven by data.
I would suggest you read the book, The Breach, by Denver Riggleman.
It's NSA signal intelligence that was used to basically prove that all these Republicans had coordination and it's there.
You know, you don't need politics, it's just data.
So that's my point today.
All right.
And if you're on the line, hold on with us.
We're going to speak briefly to Representative Donald Norcross.
He's a Democrat from New Jersey and he's on the Armed Services and the Education and Workforce Committees.
Congressman, welcome to the program.
Good morning.
How are you?
Good.
Thanks for joining us.
Wanted your reaction to President Trump's framework for a deal on Greenland.
Interesting question that, quite frankly, has been going on not only here in Congress, but literally around the world, is how can the leader of what is considered the greatest nation in the world with one of the greatest alliances called NATO decide that you're going to take by force one of your partners?
So the idea he has been batting around literally for years, but intensely in the last couple months.
And the idea that finally caught his attention was when his stock market took a crash because of their statements.
So the idea that he says he's not going to do it by force, listen, when his lips are moving, I don't think he's always telling us the truth.
It's good that he said that, bring the temperature down around the world.
But the idea that he has floated out there just broke an alliance's trust, which was put together by the blood of our grandfathers in World War II.
It's one of the most disappointing moments in our history.
Congressman, do you agree with the President that Greenland is vital for the security of the United States?
Absolutely.
Just as Canada is, Mexico, all those surrounding us.
But let's be clear: the national defense strategy, which the Department of Defense puts out with each new administration, talks about the hotspots, the items that we need to pay attention to and worry about.
Had nothing on Greenland.
So the rhetoric that he is dispensing to the American people doesn't match what his Department of Defense is saying.
So we have been involved in Greenland for years.
We, at one time, had 17 military bases.
During his administration, along with others, they've cut that back that we only have one base there.
So if you really cared about the national defense strategy, the defense of our country, why would we cut back on all those bases?
Again, the rhetoric coming out of Donald Trump is just remarkable.
We had a caller this morning, Congressman, say that he didn't believe that even if President Trump had ordered an attack, a military attack on Greenland, that the generals and the admirals would obey that order, that they would refuse that order.
What are you hearing from military leaders about this situation in Greenland and NATO in general?
Well, I sit on the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and we are meeting in Belgium in two weeks.
And I can only imagine the conversations we're going to have.
We have, in many ways, been defending Trump to NATO for quite some time.
But the idea is that we'll always be there for you.
I was watching Trump last night say, I don't know if we can depend on NATO.
Well, we had an Article 5 which invokes the NATO to come to our defense when they attacked during 9-11.
They were there.
So the idea of not trusting our closest allies is not only wrong, but it's not good for America.
And the idea that somehow our defense wouldn't listen to the commander in chief is something that should scare us all.
Just the discussion alone.
We had a hearing with the headset back a few months ago.
Mike Turner asked him a very specific question and he asked, do we have plans to invade Greenland?
And he avoided the question.
Mike said, you might not have understood me.
I'm paraphrasing.
Enforcing Transparency With Cameras 00:11:16
He says, do we have plans?
And he said, we have plans for all contingencies.
It was a stunning moment.
None of us expected that.
It's a NATO ally.
We are supposed to go for their defense.
And the idea of taking it by force is not who we are as a nation.
It's going to take decades to put our relationships back with our friends and allies, which makes us strong.
It is one of the most important weapons we have, or we had, because now everybody's wondering what's going to happen.
Switching to ICE, you have introduced legislation that would require immigration officers to wear body cameras.
Can you tell us what the current policy is right now on body cameras?
For ICE, there is none.
So there is nothing for them to enforce.
Quite frankly, there's probably very few venues around this country who have not already incorporated the cameras.
Back in New Jersey, there was an issue going on with our state police years ago, and they were one of the first to wear body cameras.
It was a settlement for a, in a court order.
Initially, the policemen didn't want it.
Now you will talk to state troopers who won't go out without a camera.
It's about the truth.
The camera doesn't lie.
And it puts people at ease because they can see what happened.
There's transparency.
So this is actually to benefit ICE, because when they hide behind masks, when they don't identify themselves, the trust that police departments around the country have with the community is put at risk.
And we saw what happens when just a split second and somebody can get shot and killed.
And the idea that there were three officers in that immediate area, including the shooter, and we don't have that information from each of them.
Again, transparency and the cameras don't lie.
And Congressman, who would have access to the video on those cameras?
That's a great question.
There will be protocols set up that, first of all, who wears them?
Any of the officers who are forward-facing the public?
That's incredibly important because we're not talking about putting them on death duty or something like that.
That if there is a complaint filed, that they will hold the film for up to six months unless it's extended by a request.
If there is a question or a complaint made by the public, they immediately are put into a hold pattern so they can't be erased.
That's incredibly important for people to have access to that.
But there also would be a committee set up of community lawyers, law enforcement to walk through and set up the very issues that you're talking about.
Who gets access and when do they get access?
Because that's incredibly important for people to trust.
And would state and local officials have access to those cameras as well in any subsequent investigation?
So as we saw in that horrific shooting in Minnesota, they would absolutely, because here it is, a confrontation that somebody died.
And we need to have access to that, transparency.
The idea that Christy Noam would put out a statement immediately before finding out the facts is just nothing short of reckless.
And we see this time after time with ICE.
The organization needs to be abolished.
That seems strong, but it's fundamentally broken from the top down.
And unfortunately, because of what they have done instilling that confrontational attitude, it's broken.
I believe it needs to be done away with and built again with trust because we do have to enforce our laws, but we have to do it in a transparent way that people trust.
And Congressman Norcross, there is the funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security coming up for a vote.
How will you be voting on that?
Let's make this absolutely clear.
No, I am not going to fund to give an axe to the executioner.
The idea that we aren't able to put in place some of the very fundamental, transparent issues and policies, there's no way I can fund that.
They already got billions of dollars, billions, 170 billion in the big ugly bill.
So you can see they're rushing to judgment, building up a force that is not always qualified or fully trained.
We have included some additional monies for training that they have to do de-escalation.
I unfortunately in my hometown of Camden City went through this almost a decade ago.
And the idea of rebuilding a force along with the community that's transparent, that we trust in, changed the dynamics of that city, went from one of the highest murder rates in the country to one of the lowest.
We can do this, but we have to do it together.
One of your colleagues, Democrat Representative Henry Queyar of Texas, said this about funding.
Quote, we wanted more oversight of DHS, but look, Democrats don't control the House.
We don't control the Senate or the White House, but we were able to add some oversight over homeland.
He is saying that voting against it and possibly causing a partial shutdown would not give Democrats what they're looking for as far as reform for ICE.
Well, certainly, as I just mentioned, having some reform, minimal as it is, that is a step in the right direction.
I don't think anybody believes for a moment that there's going to be a shutdown.
Remember, they control the House.
They have the ability to pass this.
We don't need to sharpen the acts so they can go out and continue to commit these egregious offenses.
We know those who are here trying to hurt our nation, who've been convicted, there's not a problem, I think, with removing them in an appropriate way.
We've done the right thing along the border to make sure it's safe.
We need to secure our borders.
But the idea that just keep adding money without the guardrails, I think is a big mistake for our country, and I certainly won't vote for it.
All right, that's Representative Donald Norcross, Democrat of New Jersey.
Thanks so much for joining us today.
Thank you.
Have a good day.
And we'll get back to your calls.
This is John in North Carolina, Independent Line.
John, you're on the air.
Thanks for waiting.
Yes, I have been waiting a pretty good while.
But, you know, we need Greenland band.
I've sort of got to hope someone thirst today, but I just don't understand the hatred coming from these Democrats.
I don't understand it's not helping our nation for people to talk about the president of Giant State is trying to mitigate us and they hate him.
I mean, it's not this dislike, it's hate.
I bet they call themselves a Christian with hate in the heart like that.
I don't understand it.
Probably never understand it, but I'd hate to be up.
I mean, they're going to stand in front of God one day.
They call evil good and good evil.
All right, John.
Hope your voice gets better.
Tim in Rochester, New York.
Democrat, you're on the air, Tim.
Yes, good morning.
I never told nobody this.
Like, I voted for Trump, and I'm a Democrat because this country is like what it's going through now.
We need it.
We need chaos.
And he's chaos.
It's like he can never go throughout anything, just being like a presidential, like a president.
It's always, you blame this, you talk bad about people, everything.
And like, this is what the country needs.
Like, for some people to wake up.
And it's just like, I don't know.
It's crazy.
Explain what you need, what you mean by the country needs chaos, especially because chaos is not something controlled.
Like you don't know what the, you know, the consequences could be.
Yeah, it's with him.
It's always something with him.
And it's entertaining to me.
Like, like, he got police is in the streets.
He goes across seas, talking bad about other leaders.
Like, he wants to take over country.
He invaded country, talking about America's first.
He gives another country millions of dollars, you know, just we need it.
And this is what the country needs for people to wake up and see what's going on.
Because I just think people got fat, they got lazy in this country, like they're entitled.
You're not titled here.
You got to get what you got to get and you earn it.
But hey, he's a president.
Let him do his thing.
He got, what, three more years?
Just let Trump do him.
All right.
Here's Lenny, a Republican in Lake Grove, New York.
Good morning, Lenny.
Good morning.
Yeah, about Greenland.
I mean, I was listening to what he's saying, and he's saying that Russia or China could get it because Denmark doesn't defend it.
Like, how are they going to defend it?
They're all the way over there.
They're a small country, and it's in the northern hemisphere.
It makes a lot of sense what he's saying to me.
So, Lenny, let me.
I mean, really, I call because.
Oh, no, no, no.
I'll let you go on, but I just wanted to say one thing.
So this, Greenland would be considered part of NATO.
So if it was ever attacked, all of NATO would be defending it.
What do you think of that?
Yeah, but it's right by us.
It's not, and Canada is, I mean, Carney's over there making deals with China, guys.
I mean, I don't know how you feel about China, but I don't think they're, you know, totally like you want them in our hemisphere.
So, I mean, I would just let Trump handle what he's handling.
I mean, but I'm more concerned about what's going on in Virginia.
I mean, they're taking laws and saying you got to teach certain things about J6.
I mean, that congressman was talking about tapes.
Export Selection
