Speaker Time Text

Lord, we want to believe in you.
Help our unbelief.
In your eternal name we pray.
Amen.
Pursuant to clause 13 of Rule 1, the Journal of the Last Day's Proceedings is approved.
The chair will lead the House in the Pledge of Allegiance.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic of which it stands one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and conscience for all.
Pursuant to clause 13 of Rule 1, the House stands adjourned until 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17th, 2025.
greta brawner
All right, the House quickly gabbling in and out here this morning on this Friday, June 13th for pro forma session.
They are done voting in the House and the Senate this week.
We're in open forum for our last 30 minutes of today's Washington Journal.
There are the lines on your screen.
Any public policy or political issue, Republicans dial in at 202-748-8001.
Democrats, 202-748-8000.
Independents, 202-748-8002.
You can text if you don't want to call at 202-748-8003.
Include your first name, city, and state.
You can also go to social websites, facebook.com/slash C-SPAN or X with the handle at C-SPANWJ.
Of course, the headlines dominating the newspapers this morning, the Israeli-Iran conflict, that is first and foremost.
We also have from the Associated Press this update on the situation in Los Angeles with the President bringing the National Guard, controlling the National Guard in that state.
An appeals court has temporarily blocked that judge's ruling yesterday to return control of the National Guard to California.
So a judge ruled that control should go back to the state of California.
The governor there, and now an appeals court has stepped in and temporarily blocked that decision while it hears this case.
So that is the latest out of Los Angeles.
Of course, you can talk about that.
You can talk about what happened with Senator Alex Padilla at that Homeland Security news conference led by the Homeland Security Secretary, Christy Noam.
That is on the table, as well as what Congress has worked on this week as well.
There's the video on your screen, and we'll continue watching that as we go to Mark in Las Vegas.
Democratic caller, Mark, what's on your mind this morning?
unidentified
Hey, good morning.
A couple of things.
One is the nonsense arguments by the Republicans about how the federal monetary system works.
I know you've had economist Stephanie Kelton on before.
So the first thing I'd like to say is that taxes pay for nothing.
And as long as everybody plays in that court of believing that they do, then Republicans can continue with their racist and bigoted kinds of policies that hurt minorities first.
That's one thing.
The next thing is between Israel and Iran, Iran is a large country of millions and millions of people.
This will solve nothing.
All it will do was continue the Middle Eastern religious mythology nonsense that's been going on for a thousand years.
So there will be no peace.
greta brawner
Okay, Mark's thoughts there, Democratic caller.
Mike's an independent in Brady, Texas.
And Mike, what's on your mind?
We're an open forum.
unidentified
Hey, Granny, as an independent, I'm really a pragmatic libertarian.
But that makes me independent.
So a couple of things, a couple of suggestions to the president and the Congress, and one programming suggestion.
Okay.
If the President would allocate or Congress allocate a part of the tariffs to the Social Security and Medicare Fund, he could get all the old people to support him, okay?
And as a programming function, if you get retired professor Peter Morisi, I think it is, but he could explain the difference between attacks on foreign production, i.e. the tariff, and attacks on domestic production.
All right.
We take the cap off Social Security, for instance.
greta brawner
All right, Mike, we've had Peter Morisi on the show many times, a professor at the University of Maryland.
Cecilia in Birmingham, Alabama, Democratic caller.
unidentified
Yes, hello.
greta brawner
Morning.
unidentified
Yes, good morning.
Yeah, I wanted to just speak on just a little bit on the Israel.
I think Israel and Iranian.
The thing is with those, you know, with the Iranians and even in Israel, you know, Hamas was responsible for attacking Israel.
They started this whole big conflict.
And, you know, and the thing is, you got terrorists, and it's really sad because you got the terrorists mixed with the regular children, women, and children that are suffering.
And, you know, I think it should be a way that people should weed those terrorists out of the way of everyday Palestinians.
That would help because they are a bunch of cowards and they want sympathetic, be wants to be sympathetic toward them.
They want America to be sympathetic toward them bombing Israel.
greta brawner
Okay.
unidentified
No, you know, it's totally wrong.
greta brawner
All right, Cecilia there in Alabama.
Ed is a Republican in Duluth, Georgia.
Ed, good morning to you.
We're an open forum.
Go ahead.
unidentified
Good morning.
Good morning.
I just want to parry the comment of the lady who just spoke, who I believe was a Democrat.
And I agree almost entirely with her.
You know, the Palestinians and now the Iranians have to have agency over what they do.
And if your goal is to kill Jews and you're willing to put people at risk, you have to pay a price.
And I think as Americans, we can stand proud to support Israel.
And we don't want these crazy people having nukes.
So I agree with her.
I don't want people that are innocents to get hurt either.
But after all, particularly on the Palestinian side, they voted for Hamas.
They support Hamas.
And there's a price to pay for having poor leadership.
So all of us, the United States.
greta brawner
All Palestinians, Ed?
You believe all Palestinians are in support of the American.
unidentified
I'm not saying Israel America should behave like Hamas and target civilians on purpose, but they've also got to win a war.
And if there are civilians that are embedded with terrorists, that's very unfortunate.
But Israel is to win this war, and we should support them.
greta brawner
Ed's thoughts there in Duluth, Georgia, Republican.
As we talked about in LA yesterday, Senator Alex Padilla was at that news conference with the Homeland Security Secretary wanting to ask a question.
The two of them, different views on what transpired.
First, listen to the senator.
He held a news conference after he was handcuffed and held by authorities there.
This is what he had to say.
alex padilla
I'm here in Los Angeles today and I was here in the federal building in the conference room awaiting a scheduled briefing from federal officials as part of my responsibility as a senator to provide oversight and accountability.
While I was waiting for the briefing with General Guillot, I learned that Secretary Noam was having a press conference a couple of doors down the hall.
Since the beginning of the year, but especially over the course of recent weeks, I, several of my colleagues, have been asking the Department of Homeland Security for more information and more answers on their increasingly extreme immigration enforcement actions.
And we've gotten little to no information in response to our inquiries.
And so I came to the press conference to hear what she had to say, to see if I could learn any new additional information.
And at one point, I had a question.
And let me emphasize, just as we've emphasized the right for people to peacefully protest and to stand up for their First Amendment rights, for our fundamental rights.
I was there peacefully.
At one point, I had a question.
And so I began to ask a question.
I was almost immediately, forcibly removed from the room.
I was forced to the ground.
And I was handcuffed.
I was not arrested.
I was not detained.
I will say this.
If this is how this administration responds to a senator with a question, if this is how the Department of Homeland Security responds to a senator with a question, you can only imagine what they're doing to farm workers, to cooks, to day laborers out in the Los Angeles community and throughout California and throughout the country.
We will hold this administration accountable.
And we'll have more to say.
We'll have more to say in the coming days.
greta brawner
Senator Padilla, out in Los Angeles yesterday, Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noam went on Fox News after the confrontation.
Here's what she had to say.
kristi noem
We were conducting a press conference to update everyone on the enforcement actions that are ongoing to bring peace to the city of Los Angeles.
And this man burst into the room, started lunging towards the podium, interrupting me and elevating his voice and was stopped, did not identify himself, and was removed from the room.
So as soon as he identified himself, you know, appropriate actions were taken.
But I would say that, you know, I had a conversation with the senator after this.
We sat down for 10 to 15 minutes and talked about the fact that nobody knew who he was.
He didn't say who he was that until he was already had been lunging forward and people were trying to detain him for quite a period of time and that this, you know, we're leaders, we're public servants.
And if he had requested a meeting, I would have loved to have sat down and had a conversation with him.
That coming into a press conference like this as political theater, it's wrong and it does a disservice to this country and the people who live here.
So we sat down, had a conversation.
We probably disagree on 90% of the topics, but we agreed to exchange phone numbers.
We'll continue to talk and share information.
And I think that's the way it should be in this country.
I wish he would have acted that way in the beginning instead of creating a scene like this.
greta brawner
Christy Nil and the Homeland Security Secretary of her take on Fox News after that confrontation.
You can talk about that this morning here in Open Forum on the Washington Journal, as well as any other public policy political issue.
Coming up today here on C-SPAN at 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time, we're going to cover a conversation with Governor Tim Walz on the future of the Democratic Party.
He'll be at the Center for American Progress here in Washington, D.C. for that conversation.
And you can watch that on C-SPAN, C-SPAN Now, our free video mobile app or online at c-span.org.
Also, it's tomorrow, Saturday, the military parade.
President Trump, you heard him talk about that.
That will take place at 6 p.m. Eastern Time.
A coverage of our live coverage begins then on C-SPAN, C-SPANNOW or C-SPAN.org.
Before that, though, we will have coverage at 1 p.m. Eastern Time out of Philadelphia, the No Kings parade that is taking place.
This is the protest rally that are happening across the country, and our cameras will be in Philadelphia for that.
Jamie Raskin, the congressman from Maryland, along with Randy Weingarten, teacher union president, they'll be featured speakers at that rally.
You can watch it here on C-SPAN, C-SPANNOW, or c-SPAN.org.
Let's go to Mike, who's in Crest Hill, Illinois, Republican.
Mike, good morning to you.
Go ahead.
unidentified
Good morning.
There's actually a couple of comments that I want to make on different subjects.
First, on the press conference that Senator Padilla gave, I really believe he misrepresented what actually took place.
I watched that event of Evolved from the very beginning, and he is claiming that he was being mistreated as a senator, but he had no identification.
He aggressively approached the podium.
Nobody knew who he was.
It wasn't until after they were pulling him out that he identified himself as a senator.
And at that point, he could have claimed to be the President of the United States.
They don't know.
So I feel that was a big misrepresentation as a publicity stunt.
Quickly, if I could, the other comment I wanted to make is: I was very impressed with the last guest that you had speaking about the situation in Iran.
And there were a couple of people that called and made comments related to this is providentially, biblically, what was meant to happen.
The only element that I think people need to understand, which may provide some clarity, is whether you believe that everything is in God's hands or not in terms of what happens historically.
There's one element that we always seem to sidestep, and that is the element of human responsibility.
That is what determines which way things go in the world.
That's all I wanted to say.
greta brawner
All right.
unidentified
Ann, Fort Myers, Florida, Independent.
Hi.
greta brawner
Morning, Ann.
unidentified
Morning.
I'm just calling to wish all the fathers an early, happy Father's Day.
I miss my dad, and that I want to wish President Trump a very happy birthday tomorrow.
And one last thing: go Florida Panthers.
Thank you, Greta.
greta brawner
Okay, and Kevin in Thurmont, Maryland, Democratic Caller.
Hi, Kevin.
We're in Open Forum.
What's on your mind?
unidentified
I was listening to your show and I was surprised to hear that people are still talking about how the government is throwing the words transparency, the law, and responsibility around.
And I'm a voter, but I vote across the board.
I see what I see, and I only understand that what we're seeing now is the government hiding everything.
We still haven't heard anything about the Havana syndrome when Bush name was in there.
We don't know what the government's doing with our taxpayer money.
And I would just like more actually real transparency, not the dollar bill transparency.
And thank you for taking my call.
greta brawner
All right, Kevin, Kevin and Maryland, Democratic caller.
In case you missed it, yesterday on Capitol Hill, three governors were testifying about sanctuary policies.
Governor Walls of Minnesota, Governor J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, and Governor Kathy Hochl of New York.
Take a look at this exchange between New York Republican Elise Stefanik, who is rumored to be eyeing a run for governor in that state with her governor, Kathy Hochl, over her immigration record.
elise stefanik
You are not advocating on behalf of these victims.
You are shielding illegals.
Even in your opening statement, you prioritize putting illegals first.
That is rapes of young girls, beatings of NYPD cops by illegals who are here under Kathy Hochul's failed policies, burning New Yorkers alive.
This is Kathy Hochl's New York.
It's one of many, the many reasons why you're hemorrhaging support from hardworking New Yorkers.
kristi noem
These are horrific crimes and they're heartbreaking.
elise stefanik
They're horrific crimes that are committed on your watch.
You signed this executive order on your first day in office.
You sign it again and again this January.
We deserve a governor who stands up for law-abiding New Yorkers, doesn't put illegals first, but actually puts New Yorkers first.
I appreciate that.
kathy hochul
Rather than going after the viral moment, I suggest you.
unidentified
No, no, no.
elise stefanik
I'm standing up for New Yorkers.
Rather than addressing the illegals in New York, you are prioritizing your far-left sanctuary state policies, which you put in place with executive orders.
unidentified
Instead of advocating for victims of five-year-old cooperate with us, you did not.
elise stefanik
They were released because of sanctuary state policies in New York City.
No amount of words is going to clean up your failed record and these horrific crimes committed in Sanctuary State that you created.
And with that, I yield back.
unidentified
Your representation, the facts are absolutely false.
greta brawner
New York Republican Elise Stefanik, who does not sit on the House Oversight and Reform Committee.
She was waived on for yesterday's hearing in that exchange with the New York governor, Kathy Hochl.
If you want to watch more, go to our website, c-span.org.
Those governors testifying for five hours plus on Capitol Hill.
And if you don't have five hours to sit through the testimony, go ahead and hit the play button on the video for that hearing, and you'll see gold stars appear at the bottom.
Those are the key moments you'll be able to quickly watch and get an idea of the questions and answers.
Also on Capitol Hill yesterday, C-SPAN cameras were at the House Armed Services Committee where Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was testifying.
Here's an exchange between him and Democrat California member Roe Conna.
ro khanna
Senator Baldwin asked you about the legal authority for the Marines in my state.
I disagree with you.
I thought not only do I not want Marines in Iran, I don't want them in California.
But I don't want to get a gotcha.
You know, they said what provision your administration since then has filed in the federal district court.
You're arguing that the Marines should be allowed to defend federal property.
I disagree with you.
That's your argument.
Here's where I hope we can agree.
Whatever the federal district court decides, will you abide by it?
pete hegseth
Well, this is a pending, this is a changing situation.
ro khanna
So will you agree, though, that it's not my legal view, it's not your legal view that makes the decision in America.
It's the federal judiciary.
If the federal court in California and the San Francisco, this district judge orders a preliminary injunction, will you agree to abide by the federal courts?
pete hegseth
What I will tell you is my job right now is to ensure the troops that we have in Los Angeles are capable of supporting law enforcement in the United States.
ro khanna
Sir, I agree with that.
unidentified
And we know we have the constitutional and statutory authority to do that.
ro khanna
That's fine, but can you just assure us that you'll abide by the decisions of the courts?
pete hegseth
We've always looked at the decisions of the courts.
ro khanna
Well, the vice president has said that he doesn't believe that the courts should be respected in military matters.
pete hegseth
This is not my lane, but we also recognize that the way in which the judiciary has expanded its powers.
ro khanna
But can you just give a simple question?
Okay, let me ask you this.
Two simple questions.
You got 30 seconds.
I'm not trying to trick you.
I just think it would assure the American people.
Because it shouldn't be RoConna's view of the Constitution.
It shouldn't be Secretary Hegset's.
It should be the Supreme Court and the federal courts.
Can you assure the American people on two things?
You will respect any Supreme Court decision on this matter about whether the Marines are constitutional, and you will respect the district courts when they rule before the Supreme Court rules.
pete hegseth
What I can say is we should not have local judges determining foreign policy or national security policy for the country.
ro khanna
So you're not willing to say you would respect those decisions?
pete hegseth
What I'm saying is local district judges shouldn't make foreign policy for the United States.
mike rogers
Those times expire, Chair.
greta brawner
Congressman Rokana and the Defense Secretary there on where the national, the legality of the National Guard in California stands, an update for you.
An appeals court temporarily blocked a judge's ruling that would have returned control of the National Guard to California.
So as you heard there from the congressman, he was asking the Defense Secretary to respect any court's decision and predicting that this likely continues to go through the courts all the way to the Supreme Court.
This is where it is right now.
An appeals court is looking at this judge's ruling and has temporarily blocked the judge's ruling that would have returned control of the National Guard to California.
We're in open forum here until the top of the hour, the end of today's Washington Journal.
We're taking your calls on these public policy debates happening in Washington.
Vince in Houston, Texas, an independent.
Hi, Vince.
unidentified
Hey, how you doing, Greta?
And once again, I called about a month ago and I said, I don't know how y'all stop from laughing.
Y'all have the best poker faces in the world.
But on the serious side, I am an independent.
I watch all the news channels.
And yesterday, what happened with Padilla, I got a question, and I'm wondering this.
I'm Sicilian, and Sicilians and Italian men are usually raised to respect women.
Well, this is the same guy who pointed his finger at Pam Bondi when they were questioning her for her new job.
Very disrespectful.
And he's saying he was just standing there watching and wanted to ask a question.
No, he didn't.
He came barging in.
And when they were trying to stop him as a senator, he kept pushing back instead of just turning around and walking out of the room.
So it was all staged.
As far as the protesters go, I'm going to really get crazy and ignorant on this one.
I have a suggestion.
Most people don't want to hear what these people are saying and not saying.
Why can't we find a football stadium outside of city limits?
And if they want to protest and do their freedom of speech, whoever wants to listen to them can go out there and watch them.
So we're not having freeways blocked.
So then we're not having things being thrown, people being burnt up, buildings being burnt up.
So, the people that want to hear can go out there and listen to them, and those who don't want to hear don't have to put up with this.
greta brawner
All right, Vince's thoughts there in Texas.
Another headline to share with you.
This morning, the markets opened up around 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time from CNBC.
This morning, Dow falls more than 400 points after Israel strikes Iran, spiking oil prices.
We'll go to Jim next, Orlando, Florida, Republican.
Hi, Jim.
unidentified
Hey, hi.
Yeah, I just wanted to tell you, or talk about two or three suggestions there.
First of all, immigration, they turn around and complain about, you know, deporting people and ICE and all that.
But basically, like if we went into Canada, like people from this other countries came here, they'd definitely either deport us or wouldn't let us work or take us out of work, especially if we were working with false identifications or something.
So there you go in Don South in Mexico.
I understand you can't walk around with American flags if you're in their country and parade, like in protest.
So I think things are way off, and that senator and other people, basically, as far as different things they've been doing in both sides, but particularly on the Democratic side, they stretch it out so bad that it's scary.
We got to get together.
And as far as these wars go, people would be worried and they wouldn't start with us if we'd stick together.
greta brawner
Okay, Jim.
I'm going to go to Chris, who's in Chicago, Independent.
Chris, good morning.
unidentified
Hi, good morning.
I wanted to comment about Senator Padilla ending up on the floor.
I thought that was a bad resolution of the dispute he was having with, I believe it was three gentlemen who took him down.
I never thought I would see the day when a United States Senator was like knocked to the ground on TV.
I just, I'm still, you know, hours later, I'm still pretty flabbergasted that that happened.
greta brawner
All right, Chris Ronald in Dayton, Ohio, Democratic caller.
Ronald, we have about a minute or so left.
Go ahead.
unidentified
Thank you so much.
I have a couple of comments.
I appreciate you, Wall Street Journal.
I just want to say, man, it's amazing how people twist the truth to accommodate their politics.
Then you also got Jake Capper writing a book about Biden when he should be writing a book about the fake electorate scheme in 2020.
That's all I have to say.
greta brawner
All right.
That was Ronald in Dayton, Ohio.
Thank you for watching the Washington Journal this morning here on C-SPAN.
We'll be back tomorrow morning, 7 a.m. Eastern Time for another conversation.
Enjoy your weekend.
unidentified
C-SPAN, Democracy Unfiltered.

Is it reliable?
At Sparklight, we know connection goes way beyond technology.

So how do you know it's great internet?
Because it works.
We're Sparklight and we're always working for you.

Friday, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz discusses the future of the Democratic Party and how to connect with voters across party lines at an event hosted by the Center for American Progress.
Watch the discussion live at 10.30 a.m. Eastern on C-SPAN, C-SPAN Now, our free mobile video app, or online at cspan.org.
Experience democracy in action with C-SPAN's Voices, where we hear directly from you.
We want to know what are your thoughts on the upcoming military parade in Washington, D.C.
I think it's hopefully the start of a great tradition.
250th anniversary of the founding of the United States Army.
There's probably no organization that deserves to be honored more than our U.S. fighting forces, particularly the Army.
I consider myself pretty anti-military seeing Army parades in the U.S.
I can't help but think of depictions of Army parades from countries like Nazi Germany, from the Soviet Union.
My thoughts about the military, I think it's great and we need to honor our veterans and our soldiers.
My thoughts on the Armored Parade is this is just a tremendous waste of money and waste of energy on a man that really doesn't deserve a parade.
My name's Guy.
I'm from Florida and I think it's a wonderful thing.
I mean we see military parades throughout the country.
However, this being the headquarters for freedom and serving in the military myself, I really think it's a wonderful idea.
It's a waste of taxpayer dollars.
