Time Text
So I urge my colleagues to vote yes and keep the government open, help people in need, help the rural economy, and let us move forward with our work.
With that, Mr. Speaker, I urge passage of the bill and yield back.
Gentleman yields.
The question is, will the House suspend the rules and pass the bill, H.R. 10515?
Those in favor say aye.
Those opposed say no.
In the opinion of the chair, two-thirds being in the affirmative, for what purpose does the gentlewoman from Connecticut seek recognition?
Guess what?
I would request a recorded vote.
Does the gentlewoman ask with great surprise?
The yays and nays are requested.
The House rejected a Republican government funding bill 174 to 235.
A two-thirds majority was needed for passage.
38 Republicans voted against the legislation, which President-elect Trump urged members to support.
Two Democrats voted in support, and 20 members did not vote.
An earlier bipartisan effort was pulled when it was opposed by a number of Republican members and Donald Trump.
Congress is facing a midnight deadline to avoid a government shutdown.

House Speaker Mike Johnson briefly spoke after the House failed to pass a funding bill to avert a government shutdown on Friday at midnight.
Quote, we're going to regroup and we'll come up with another solution.
So stay tuned, Speaker Johnson said after the vote.
It is very disappointing.
Watch out, watch out, watch out.
Thank you, sir.
Very disappointing to us that all but two Democrats voted against aid to farmers and ranchers, against disaster relief, against all these bipartisan measures that had already been negotiated and decided upon.
Again, the only difference on this legislation was that we would push the debt ceiling to January of 2027.
I want you all to remember that it was just last spring that the same Democrats berated Republicans and said that it was irresponsible to hold the debt limit, the debt ceiling, hostage.
What changed?
It is, I think, really irresponsible for us to risk a shutdown over these issues on things that they have already agreed upon.
I think you need to be asking them the questions about that.
We will regroup and we will come up with another solution.
So stay tuned.
Will you drop the debt limit, demand?
Will you drop the dead limit to the bottom?
The U.S. House returns at 9 a.m. Eastern after rejecting a Republican temporary spending bill.
Members are expected to vote again on a stopgap measure to fund the government past the midnight deadline.
You can see live debate on the legislation on C-SPAN.
