EXCLUSIVE: My Interview with Jair Bolsonaro

Ever since the culmination of Brazil's hotly-contested — and highly-disputed — presidential election, Jair Bolsonaro has been living in self-imposed exile in Florida. Now, he joins Charlie for his very first full-length interview since arriving in America. Charlie and Bolsonaro discuss the crucial importance of the right to bear arms, the new government's efforts to frame Bolsonaro for a coup, and the tyrannical state of Brazil's rogue judiciary. When the topic turns to Bolsonaro's future plans, he makes a surprise announcement you won't want to miss.Support the show: http://www.charliekirk.com/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Weaponizing the Judiciary 00:10:05
Charlie, what you've done is incredible here.
Maybe Charlie Kirk is on the college campuses.
I want you to know we are lucky to have Charlie Kirk.
Charlie Kirk's running the White House, folks.
I want to thank Charlie.
He's an incredible guy.
His spirit, his love of this country.
He's done an amazing job building one of the most powerful youth organizations ever created.
Turning point USA.
We will not embrace the ideas that have destroyed countries, destroyed lives, and we are going to fight for freedom on campuses across the country.
That's why we are here.

Mr. President, thank you for sitting down.
So you came to the United States right before your term ended.
How have you spent your time here in the United States?
And what are your future plans?
I'm being very well received, especially by the Brazilian population.
And my intention to be here is that I want to stay away from the government that just took office in January.
I knew that there would be plenty of turbulence, and I did not want to be accused to cooperate with the disastrous way that the government started their term.
Because we have opposing policies, mine, conservative, right-wing, and theirs, leftist and geared towards socialism.
Sounds very similar to what we're dealing with in the United States: this kind of internal dispute.
And you brought crime down when you were president.
It's one of the things that I think we could actually understand.
Tell us about some of your big accomplishments during your tenure as president.
And the biggest reason for this was that we allowed for the good people to purchase their own firearms to defend themselves.
And through a law that's called the law of economic freedom, we allowed for people to freely work and create their own companies.
We are the second country with the greatest digit in terms of digital in the world.
We chose our cabinet based on their merit and not political appointments.
And we really went against corruption.
Come out of Brazil without one single accusation of corruption.
We also had a great foreign policy.
We got close and did great business with the entire world.
And also the conservative issues.
We worked for freedom of religion, freedom of faith, and also freedom of expression.
We worked hard for those freedoms.
We rescued the patriotic sentiment of the Brazilian people.
And those for me are the most important achievements.
You mentioned firearm ownership.
It's one of the first things that Lula got rid of after he took office.
Is owning a firearm a constitutional right for Brazil?
Our law is very restrictive when it comes to firearm ownership.
And I regulated this subject through decrees that allowed for people to more easily purchase firearms, which was not allowed before I came to the presidency.
And now, through decree, he wants that all firearms in Brazil become part of, become registered.
But this goes against federal law because it says that this registration must be done by the army and not by the federal police, as he intends to do now.
If we study history, every dictatorship starts with a campaign against individual rights to own firearms.
For four years, they said they've been saying that I wanted to give a stage a military coup in Brazil.
And now they notice that the people who intend really to change the regime, that's not me.
I hope this translates well, but if you were trying to do something insidious, you wouldn't want more people to own guns.
And that's essentially, I believe that's what he's saying.
Yeah, I hope that the senhor can understand the translation, but if the senhor really wanted to do something bad, he wouldn't let the population have weapons.
I understand that a armed people never will be esclareced.
Yeah, I believe that a people that is armed will never be enslaved.
That's true.
That's very profound and totally true.
So there were the protests that happened on January 8th.
You were in Florida when those protests occurred, and yet some people are trying to blame you.
You had nothing to do with these protests.
Why are they trying to blame you and what's the story behind that?
Brazil did not have a right wing.
I was able to bring people together, talk about values, and talk about their importance for the future of Brazil.
There's a huge mass of people, conservative people, that will be the difference in future elections.
And the left blames me for this, and obviously, I do not agree with any violence or breaking public buildings or throwing rocks at glass windows, but they want to blame me because they want to be alone in, once again, only the left ruling Brazil.
There is a disturbing trend, in my estimation, of the weaponization of the judiciary in Brazil.
Do you have comments on that or thoughts on that?
Let me give you an example.
We believe that private property is sacred.
One Supreme Court Justice has said that after a long process of someone who owns a private land trying to get it back from people who actually took it over, that after that, it would be necessary for another.
Checks and Balances in Brazil 00:06:59
Um outro o que no final?
Depois do processo, longo processo de integração de bós, aquela propriedade tinha que ser desocupada ou não?
Mas o que precisaria além do processo?
Cuidar uma comissão.
After the long process, they would have to create a commission to decide if a committee.
to decide if that would be, if that property would be once again given back to the owner.
It seems as if Brazil is going through a very critical crisis where in America we are going through a similar one.
Can a singular judge take your rights away?
Unfortunately, this is happening.
Today we have more than 1,000 people arrested in jail in Brazil, and many people have had their social media taken away and also their ability to make money on social media removed.
And always they use the same accusations: fake news or going against the democratic institutions.
And fake news and going against democratic institutions, there's nothing in the constitution that says that those are crimes.
And how can we decide what's fake news for me and not for you?
And so these judges are able to make their jury, judge, executioner, and prosecutor.
And in America, it's a different concept.
This began four years ago in Brazil.
And it's unfortunate because our Constitution is very clear when it comes to freedom of expression.
And there is an article that allows freedom of expression, but if you don't have judges that defend it, then what good is the article?
It's not the First Amendment.
So it's not the First Amendment, like here, it's Article 220, but unfortunately, it's completely ignored because they feel that they can do anything to protect democracy as if I was a dictator.
On this question, on the final question on this topic, do you think that there is a working system of separation of powers or checks and balances?
The reason I ask is that the founding fathers warned in America what judges with too much power could do.
However, we don't have a force in Brazil that is able to go against and to use the balance of powers in order to be able to restrict the power of these judges.
The American founder said your liberty is protected by the structure of the Constitution, and without that, you don't have liberty.
What is your message to Brazilians watching this back home and want you back?
There is a great wish by a great part of the Brazilian population that I return as quickly as possible.
In the next few weeks, I intend to return to Brazil and be part of a responsible opposition to the current government.
Unfortunately, in the last 30 days, I have already done a lot of bad things.
And I like to say that a government by the Workers' Party, by Petit, does not really need opposition.
Will you return to politics again?
Yes, I found myself through politics, maybe a little bit late, but I feel that I must stay in politics because I have a very big responsibility.
There are new right-wing leaders in Brazil, and I feel that in my position, I must help coordinate their efforts to help the conservative movement.
Last question, from what you have learned the last couple of years, what is your advice or wisdom to other freedom fighters in the Western world or across the world?
Don't give up.
Good Always Wins Over Evil 00:00:35
The left is very persistent, but we are the majority.
And as I like to say in Brazil, good always wins over evil.
We don't want Brazil to follow the path of Venezuela.
We don't want America to become Venezuela.
