Herschel, welcome to the Charlie Kirk Show.
Hey, thank you for having me on.
It's terrific.
Speaking Truth for Trump 00:05:34
So you gave an amazing speech last week on behalf of your friend and my friend, President Donald Trump.
Tell us about that experience and tell us about some of the response you have received since you gave that terrific speech.
Well, it was interesting because a lot of people don't know President Trump.
And, you know, he always told me I could call him Donald.
So I would say Donald, and I didn't mean any disrespect in my speech or even now, but he's always told me I could call him Donald.
And, you know, President Trump and I met 37 years ago.
And we met as he owned the first professional football team I played on, but that wasn't the meeting.
The meeting was we met as friends where I was at his home.
He was at my home.
We went to dinner.
I was at his office.
He came and he talked to me.
Literally Donald and Little Ivanka.
You know, I did a lot with them.
And so I got to know him as a person, not just as an owner.
And he became a friend.
And what was so unique about this situation here is, you know, being known Donald Trump for 37 years, not one time has he asked Herschel Walker to speak for him.
Not one time did he ever ask if I go on and say something about racism or go on and say something about who he was.
And this was something I decided that I wanted to do.
And the reason I wanted to do it, I wanted people to know the type of man he was.
I think it was unfair that people don't know the truth.
You know, I've heard so many crazy things, and I said it in my speech that I was appalled and I was sort of angered by what people have called him, the names and different things, because I've seen a lot of people in the African American community.
When I was there with President Trump, that was his friends.
And I never seen him do anything wrong to them.
And yet now they've come out and called him all types of names.
And I think it's not right.
And because there's a vote coming up in November, I want the people and not just African America, but I want the people to know the truth.
I don't want them to go into this voting booth knowing lies.
I want them to know the truth.
And I decided I wanted to say something about this president here because I probably have known him longer than anyone that had been speaking about him.
So I thought that it would be only the fair thing for me to do is go on to and do something for him and speak the truth.
And you've known the president for 37 years.
You spoke wonderfully.
I find it funny because all these people who are saying these mean names against the president have never known him, let alone known him for many decades like you have in many different capacities in a capacity of business and sports and other realms.
Can you talk about some of the response you received?
I read an article that said you lost friends over that speech.
Is that true?
Well, what's funny about that, I may have lost one or two friends, but if a friend disagrees with you because of your opinion, he's not a friend to begin with.
But I have gained tons of people that I didn't know.
And I have friends that, you know, they may disagree with me, but they still give me, they still have faith in me because they know me.
They know the type of person I am.
And one thing about it is I will speak truth.
And all my people who are true friends know that Herschel Walker's going to speak truth.
I'm not going to go up and try to lie to someone and tell them about someone that's not the truth.
You know, I love being an African-American person.
I love being a black man.
I love being a black man and American.
And right now, I think this racism thing has been played by the Democrat just to separate people.
And they're blaming it on the president.
Well, I don't think it's right.
I want all people to wake up.
I want them to educate themselves and realize that what's being played on them is like they're selling us down a rabbit hole.
And I said, guys, I want to speak out because I love America.
We're the United States of America.
Why I can't be known as just a man rather than a man of color?
Why can't just be a man?
And, you know, today, the Democratic people want me to be known as a colored man or be known as an African-American living in America.
No, I'm an American.
That's what I am.
And that's when you start separating people by that.
We fought a long ways to get to just be known as a man.
Now they want to separate us and blame the president.
Well, I want them to know this president here is not into color.
This president here, you know, that's no doubt.
You throw a punch at him, he's going to punch right back.
And I guarantee everyone else is going to do that exact same thing.
But one thing I know about this president here, he loved the United States of America.
And who should love it more than the president of the United States of America?
One thing here, I know he's going to protect every American citizen in the United States of America.
And that's what he should do.
And I know he's a fighter.
He's a fighter, and he's going to work.
He's going to work his tail off because I've been side by side with him.
And he's someone I have in a foxhole with me.
And I'm not here to try to tell someone that Vice President Biden is not a good man.
I don't know the type of man he is, but I do know he's been in office for 47 years.
And what has he done for any African-American?
And I said, look it up.
Don't take it from Herschel Walker.
Do your own research.
You look it up and see what he's done for African American.
And not only as you're looking it up, I said, look up what the Democratic Party has done for African American people in the last couple of years.
You know, I look at the young lady, Kim, from Baltimore.
I said, was that not a compelling story that she told?
And I said, guys, you have to look at that.
Football Lockdowns Explained 00:02:40
People don't like facts.
That's the reason I love you so much, Charlie.
You give people facts.
People don't like it.
But you give them facts.
And I'm like, how can you disagree with facts?
You know, that's what Biden always says, science, science, science.
And what's so interesting about that, you give them facts, which is the truth.
But when he says science, does he not know that there's other scientists that disagree with his scientists?
So that doesn't mean that he's right.
So quit using science as your excuse not getting out to see people.
Quit using science as saying the reason you're going to do something.
What you need to do is use facts like you do.
That's what people got to go by.
Amen.
Thank you for saying that.
And when you have fact-driven arguments and logical thinking, then you're actually able to improve your society, not turn people against each other.
I want to talk, Herschel, for a second here about the college and NFL football lockdowns.
I'm a huge college football fan.
I said right before this interview, I think you are the best college football player in the history of the sport.
Heisman Trophy winner, most dominant, so incredible to watch.
I'm so upset at how college football has just caved to all of the highly politicized demands from individuals to shut down everything in society, specifically the Big Ten and the Pac-12.
And I'll say one thing about this, Herschel.
So the Big Ten says, we're not going to play maybe until Thanksgiving or until next year.
Well, what do they think their players are going to do in the month of September of October?
Do you think they're more or less incentivized to try and protect themselves from getting the virus?
With no football, they'll go to the big parties.
They'll probably go to the super spreader events, and they'll probably have more likelihood to get the virus, which is the opposite of their intention.
Can you talk about the shutdowns of college football and a little bit of the NFL?
The NFL is not as much locked down, but please, what are your thoughts on this?
You obviously have a lot of credibility in this subject.
Well, it is extremely, extremely sad to me that I see the college has shut this down.
The reason why is those players are in a controlled environment.
They're under some of the best doctors in the world at these different universities.
They're tested maybe twice a week.
They're looked after like in a prima donna in the country, in the world.
And yet they're shutting it down.
Whereas if they do not have school, where are they at?
They're back home.
That's right.
You're talking about catching the virus.
Would you not like being able to catch the virus under a controlled environment with great, great doctors or at home where they have no help at all?
And then they talk about what could happen.
Well, concussion has become a big, big issue.
Kneeling and Separating People 00:16:07
That's right.
Well, yet they still play football.
We don't know the after effect of concussion.
They still play football.
And they talk about this virus because what it does to your heart, where they've been studying the heart of athlete for a long, long time.
And they still don't understand it.
But we're still playing football.
So when this came about, I said, guys, this is being politicized that people are talking about this virus.
And I said, and they also separating the people because if you look at it in professional sports, let's go to the professional sports.
I said, what is interesting is I heard a coach, well, I can call his name, Coach Carroll, CL Seahawk, go into this thing about, you know, America was built on slavery and the white man don't understand and all this.
And, you know, you got to kneel and all this stuff here.
And I'm like, what about some of your players that may not want to do this?
What about them having their own way of thinking?
But yet you now put the pressure on them that they have to go about what the system is telling them or now they're going to be kicked out or they're going to be looked down bad on them.
And I said, that's what is sad.
And now you're seeing them put different things, BLM on their jersey, putting the names of different victims on their jerseys.
And I said, wait a minute, guys.
You're putting people on your jersey that broke the law.
I'm not saying no one should be killed, but I'm saying, wait a minute, they broke the law.
Well, when you wanted to put a police officer, I mean, the Cowboys wanted to put a police officer that was killed in the line of duty, the NFL said no.
Well, now it's okay to put someone that broke the law.
And I'm going to say this.
I was stopped in Atlanta.
I was stopped in Atlanta.
Herschel Walker.
Herschel Walker, who, you know, I think some people know me.
I was stopped in Atlanta.
And it was at night.
Two cops stopped me.
And they came up to me and they wanted my license.
They started giving me the third degree.
They wanted to search the car.
And I said, no, sir.
I said, no, you can't search the car.
Said, hey, we can bring the dogs in.
So you can bring who you want in.
You're still not going to search the car.
This is Herschel Walker that never drank before in my life.
I never had a drug before in my life.
But I said, no, I know my rights.
You're not going to search the car.
And I will give you my license.
I'll give you my insurance.
And then they said, but now, and I do say this: if I had jumped out of the car and started fighting with them and took off running, they deserved to shoot me.
But because I was respectful, and I said, Yes, sir.
No, sir.
This is my license.
This is what I am.
I was looked at as a person because I'm a big man.
I was looked on as a person that said, you know what, I'm going to be respectful.
I'm going to do what I'm asked to do.
And I'm saying, so cooperate with the police.
It's so everyone can go home safe.
But I see the Democratic Party now is playing up to this, stirring the people up, and they're blaming their president when the president said, let's stop the violence altogether.
But yet, I don't see the Democratic Party talking about the black on black crime.
The black on black crime is really, really bad.
I don't see them talking about these young kids that have been killed, which is absolutely terrible.
Kids are sleeping in their beds, kids that are doing absolutely nothing, the innocent kids.
I don't see them talking about the police officers that are killed.
I don't see them talking.
And I said, so quit trying to pretend like you really care.
If you really care, Vice President Biden, you were here for 47 years.
If you really care, Senator Harris, remember you were AG.
Why didn't you do something at that time?
Remember, you're a senator.
Why didn't you bring a law or want to meet with Senator Scott when he talked about reform if you really care?
So don't try to put these covers over my eyes like I don't see what's going on.
And that's what I tell the American people.
I'm not saying that I'm right, but what I'm saying is you got to do what's right.
And what's right is to let people know the truth.
Amen.
Well, and Pete Carroll came out and said specifically that white people do not have a clue or don't know enough about racism in America, basically giving a lecture.
And so the NFL is planning massive social justice exercises, kneeling during the national anthem.
What is your opinion on the kneeling during the national anthem, the disrespect towards our flag and first responders?
How are we supposed to, what is your take on this?
Well, you know, first of all, they're saying they're kneeling because it's their freedom of speech annealing.
And I said, no, no, no, no.
When you kneel on a national anthem, we're the United States of America.
And there's no black national anthem.
There's United States national anthem.
There's no, and I said, for the people to take this stance.
And I said, it is separating people.
Why do we have to separate color?
That is racism right there.
We're going to separate the cause of the African American.
Well, I know we don't have many Asian Americans playing football, but what about their rights?
Should we let them have a national anthem as well?
Should we start kneeling on their rights too?
Oh, well, now, if you're white and you have a white national anthem, that means you're racist.
Oh, well, now, what about the Italian?
What about this?
I said, guys, let's not separate you because you're black.
There are problems going on.
And I think for coaches to say that white people don't understand, I said, you're totally wrong.
White people do understand.
You know, Italian people understand.
Spanish people understand.
Asian people understand.
Do not limit people, but them not understanding.
Quit separating as the people of color are the ones that are victimized by everyone all the time.
There's other people that are victimized as well.
We haven't talked about the Latino people that are killed by the police.
There's many of them that are killed by the police.
But yet, we have, we put, we policize the African American that is killed.
The problem we have, how many African Americans are killed by the police rather than African Americans that's killed by African Americans?
Why are they not talking about that?
Do they not care about the African American that killed African Americans?
Is that okay?
And I said, so it's a lot more than just that.
And what I asked people to do, which the NFL don't want to do it, I asked, I said, guys, why don't we get together?
Why don't we get together and become the change rather than just talking about the change?
You're kneeling, but what are you kneeling for?
Are you thinking you're kneeling because you're going to change something by kneeling?
Why are you not putting some action behind what you do?
Now they do all these PSAs on racism.
What is that going to do but stir up more racism?
What is it going to do?
Why don't you come to Congress?
Like we're a country that have laws.
We're a country that have a justice system.
Why don't we go to Congress as a group?
And I guarantee you with the amount of money that they're putting into this different, like BLM.
I see them giving money to BLM and I said, well, it's so interesting.
All you're doing now is you're planning to, you're just, I'm going to give them a little money, then I feel better.
So like you're putting money in the collection plate at church for all your sins.
You think God is going to forgive you now because you just paid a lot of money.
Well, have they even tried to chase and see where that money goes?
Have they even did research?
Where did they do with that money that they just gave?
$300, $400, $500 million to BLM?
Have they said, oh, where did that money go?
Well, it doesn't really matter.
And I said, that's what you need to do.
If you're going to be responsible, you got to be responsible and caring for what's happening in this country.
So can you talk more about BLM and the rise of this movement?
Because a lot of people have capitulated to this.
It is on the floor of the National Basketball Association.
On their website, they say they want to destroy the Western nuclear family.
They want to defund the police, abolish prisons.
What are we supposed to make of this?
And is it okay to speak out against BLM Incorporated, the organization?
But that's what was so interesting is, you know, when all this started a couple of years ago, I didn't understand a lot.
And so I started educating myself.
Where the first thing I did, I went on the website of BLM.
Then I went on to the donation.
And then I went where I saw down there where all money goes to Act Blue.
That's right.
Which is the Democratic Party.
And I'm like, how in the world could you see changes when you're only giving to one side?
You're only helping one side.
You're not even giving to both sides.
And then what you stood for.
And now my thing is the NFL, not the NBA, do they understand that if you're only giving to one side, you're only supporting one side.
And not only that, they states themselves that they're trying to destroy the nuclear family.
Have they read that?
Do they understand that?
Or do they go along with it?
That's a major thing.
Are they going along with what BLM stands for?
If you're going to give them that amount of money and their support, or are you going along with it?
And I think the American people need to know that.
And if you're going to go along with that, I think that's going to hurt.
I think that's going to hurt.
And I see that NBA players, all them wearing the BLM.
And I said, that is fine.
If you want to do that, because you're in America, you have the right to do that.
Because you're in America, you do have those rights to do and believe what you want to.
But also, the people got the right to believe and do what they want to against you.
But as long as you don't injure anyone, as long as you don't hurt anyone, and the other night when I was in Washington leaving the convention, I saw a lot of BLM signs of people trying to hurt other people.
Well, I totally disagree with that.
I totally disagree with it.
And one of the major things I disagree with is when I saw a BLM sign being held up and I saw them burning the Holy Bible, the United States flag, and a cross.
I said, do the basketball team stand for that?
Are they standing behind that?
Because that means you're standing for BLM.
And I said, I just totally, totally, totally disagree with it.
And I guarantee you, the majority of Americans, because we are good people here in the United States of America, do not believe in something like that.
That's really well said.
So, Herschel, I'm curious.
The president has gone above and beyond to convince black voters to give him another four years.
I thought the convention was phenomenal.
You did a great job.
Jeron, Alice Johnson, and so many others made a convincing case that the president cares for all Americans.
Do you, in fact, some polling shows that President Trump's approval rating in the black community went up nine points after last week?
Do you see this happening?
Do you think that it would be a good thing if the black community was more, let's say, split-ticketed in their voting, voted less Democrat all the time and actually gave Republicans a chance?
And do you think the president has an opportunity to expand his base of support in the black community?
I think the president got a very good chance at expanding his base.
And the reason why, I think people are starting to wake up.
I think they're starting to wake up.
And, you know, when you start looking at the Democratic Party, the only reason they started caring about the violence in these cities is when a news company said, hey, we're losing in the polls.
That's right.
That was the only reason they decided to speak out that there's violence in the city.
Otherwise, they were okay with whatever was going on.
And then when they decided to speak out, they blame the president when he's the one that's trying to stop the violence in the city.
And I said, guys, one thing that's interesting, this president has had an open hand this whole time to welcome African Americans into the White House, to welcome professional athletes into the White House to listen to their problem.
But every time he's had an open hand, they've almost slapped it.
And I said, how in the world can you ask a president of the United States of America who welcomes you into his home to change things?
And you continue to say no.
And yet, you have a, and I hate to go back to Biden.
I said, he's been in office for 47 years.
He also was under a vice president, under an African-American president, and yet they still did nothing.
Yet still nothing was done.
And that's why I asked the question, including Obama eight years, and let's go 20 years before that.
What have the Democratic Party done for African Americans in this country?
And I said, people, look at that.
Look at that and see what they've done.
And then take the time out to look at to see what this president has done.
And when you see what he's done, the first thing they say is, oh, yeah, but Obama was going to do that.
Yeah, you're right.
He was going to.
But he had eight years to do it, and he didn't do it.
And I'm not telling people, guys, this guy is going to say the right thing.
I'm not going to say he's going to tweet the right thing.
I'm not going to say this, but what he's going to do would be the right thing.
And that's what I said counts.
Not what he says, not what he tweets, but what he does.
And it first step back, record funding the historical black college universities before the shutdown, the lowest ever black unemployment, black poverty rate, the lowest ever before the shutdown, wages going up, black business startups going up, opportunity zones, all of these things the president was able to talk about.
And you said it great.
President Obama had eight years and he might have had it on his to-do list to do it, but he didn't do it.
And so I think that's a really convincing argument to be able to say is that, look, the president, despite all of the media propaganda against him, went out of his way to actually deliver results for a community that didn't vote for him.
Can you talk about that, Herschel?
How the president actually delivered more for the black community despite the black community not originally supporting him?
Well, that's what's so interesting.
And the first thing you want to say is, how many people, how many, I said, how many people that has been running for office has done almost everything they said that they were going to do.
Most everyone run for office don't do anything they say they're going to do.
This president has done it.
And not only did he do it, he did it for African-American people, not just for African-American.
He did it for people because he thought it was right.
No one told him to do it.
People came to see him.
They told him what was going on and he fixed it.
And I said, that's what's so interesting about it.
And that's why I spoke out for him because he never asked his black friend to speak for him.
He never asked his black friend to speak for him.
A black friend that he's known 37 years that I'm welcoming into this house anytime.
And I'm welcome to call him anytime.
His kids come to see me anytime.
I'll go see his kids anytime.
He didn't ask me to speak for him.
This is something I wanted to do.
And what's interesting that I want everyone in America to know, this man here doesn't care if you're a janitor.
He doesn't care if you're a street sweeper.
He doesn't care if you're a garbage collector.
He's going to treat you the same way he'll treat anyone else.
And that's the way he's always been since I've known him.
You know, and then I said, is he tough?
He's very tough because he's strict.
And I hate to tell you, I'm tough because I believe in law and order.
The United States of America was built on law and order.
And that's what we got to get back to.
Like it or not, that's the reason we're the best country in the world because we have law and order.
We don't have a law system that put in place that just the government has a law system.
And I said, that seemed to be what the Democratic Party want right now.
And that's what they're getting almost right now.
What they've done now is they got the country right now scared to death to do anything.
Right now, they're stopping the schools.
You can't go to school.
Right now, they're stopping everything.
They're closing down everyone's business.
They even closing down the church, but it's okay to okay to protest.
You can protest.
And for the Democratic Party, you can ride as well until somebody told them they're losing in the poll.
Now riding is bad, maybe.
And it's okay for black on black crime, but don't the police get involved with it, even though that is so low that police kill African Americans.
There's more black on black crimes than there were police killing African Americans.
They don't really care about all those fights.
Advice for Young Brothers 00:05:38
And I said, guys, that's what I want people to know.
This president here is making the change that we were looking for, giving us better jobs, giving us things that we can do.
And I said, look at what's going on.
I asked the question, how many Amazons have they built in these poor neighborhoods?
You know, Amazon now springing up everywhere in all these great places, giving all these great jobs.
Have you ever thought of them building a great place in Chicago somewhere where a lot of African Americans could go to work?
They don't do that, do they?
And I said, but yet they may give a lot of money to BLM.
They may give a lot of money there.
And I said, that's what people need to think about.
Hey, guys, people need to think about this.
And I said, that's what you got to think about.
Herschel, that's such a great point.
And what's amazing is that the president was called all these awful names, was insulted by a lot of black leadership in the inner cities.
And yet the president said, I am the president of all Americans.
And he did what he did not have to do, which was deliver results for black America.
And yet, as you said, Amazon is giving all this money to BLM, but are they actually putting in their factories or their distribution warehouses in black communities?
They're not.
They're not delivering those results at all whatsoever.
So, Herschel, in closing here, can you tell us how people can stay in touch with you?
And also, can you just give some general advice to young men out there?
I think you're a great role model for young men.
Young men, I think, need to step up and be leaders in our society right now.
I've heard some of your speeches.
They're phenomenal.
Can you just talk about that from a leadership development standpoint?
Yes, you know, to all the African-American young men and women out there, I want to tell you, we're powerful beyond, and we have more power than you can ever think.
And I love being an African-American man, but I want to tell you that as we go into the next generation, we must realize that we are people that can make changes.
But the way we make changes is not through protesting.
The way we make changes is through our actions or going to Washington, going getting an education.
Education is so important.
And we're being responsible.
And I want to apologize to the African-American community because I know the fatherless home is a major, major problem.
And Herschel Walker, who was born in Wrightsville, Georgia, I took care of a lot of people in my hometown.
I took care of a lot of the places around where I grew up.
I was being like a father to some of those kids that may have had father.
But because the Lord Jesus Christ blessed me to be an athlete, I should have gone into the cities of Chicago.
I should have told a lot of my young African-American brothers there and my kids that, guys, hold on, get your education.
It's going to be okay.
Get your education.
It's going to be all right.
Hey, respect the police.
Go home safe.
Get home.
Get home to your families.
And remember that, remember, you can leave the wife, but don't leave your child.
You give them those old things that I was brought up on from my father because I was blessed to have a mom and a dad.
And I'm saying some kids are not.
And I can, and Charlie, I want to say this.
And I want to say this to all kids, not just the African-American kid.
This is major for them, but to all kids, because there are problems in the United States of America that just not stemming from African-American.
But I want everyone to know that we all are Americans, that we got to fight for America.
We need to vote for the right person, not just on the federal side, but on the local side as well.
Because you see the local officials that are not doing their job.
They're not being a leader.
And if they're not going to be a leader, get rid of them.
We got to get them out of office.
You got to put people in that care and going to do their job.
And that's another major thing I think they got to do.
Well, that's well said, Herschel.
And did you say that you never have drank before in your life?
I don't know if I misheard that or not.
No, I never tasted beer, never had a drink, never had a drug.
I've been blessed.
You know, my mom is a minister, and I didn't grow up with alcohol.
I didn't grow up, and I never try to impress people.
You know, I grew up with a speech impediment.
I was overweight.
Kids used to put me down.
They made fun of me and they laughed at me so many times.
But I got to know who I was.
And I love myself.
And that's why I tell all African American kids to love yourself.
Do not let what's going on right now make you a victim because you have power beyond means.
And do not let them make you a victim right now and make it like you're not worthy.
Because I'm telling you, you're very worthy.
And I'm going to defend you to the best of my ability because I know every life matters.
Not just African American, but Americans.
And that's who you are.
You're not just a black African American.
You are an American.
And that's what I'm going to get people to know.
Well, God bless you, Herschel.
Thank you for all that you do for our country and that wonderful message.
And your speech was terrific and very inspiring.
