| All right, and Courtney, as we wait for more information on that, set the scene for us at the NATO meeting, especially focused on aid to Ukraine and all these countries working together. | ||

So today is a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. | |
| And what that is, is a whole bunch of allies, about 50 of them, that come together every several weeks, and they discuss what Ukraine needs for the current fight and what they can do to provide that. | ||
| Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin chairs these meetings, and you can kind of think of them as like an auctioneer. | ||
| So they're sitting around this giant room and he'll say, okay, Ukraine needs ammo. | ||
| Who's got 155 rounds? | ||
| Oh, you have them. Well, you know, so-and-so can provide them. | ||
| Who else can provide tanks? | ||
| Who can provide air defenses? | ||
| And they sit there for hours and they figure out what exactly these countries can provide and when. | ||
| So the things that we should be looking for out of today's Ukraine contact group are the four A's. | ||
| The first is air defenses. | ||
| And that's because Ukraine needs air defense systems for the coming Russian offensive. | ||
| The hope is that the airspace over Ukraine has remained contested since the invasion. | ||
| That means that Russia doesn't own any of the airspace. | ||
| If Ukraine has effective air defense systems on the ground, they'll be able to keep Russia from taking over any of the skies, and the Ukrainians can effectively operate more safely without the... | ||
| It's a pretty capable Russian Air Force in the skies. | ||
| The second is ammo, ammunition. | ||
| There will never be enough ammunition for the Ukrainians in this conflict. | ||
| They are running through tens of thousands of rounds, sometimes in a day. | ||
| The third, artillery, goes back to the ammo as well. | ||
| They need more and more and more artillery shells for this coming offensive and even for the current fight right now. | ||
| The fourth one, armor. | ||
| What we think of as tanks. | ||
| We already heard from Jan Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of NATO, saying that the Russians are preparing for this next offensive. | ||
| It may even be starting. | ||
| They may be in the sort of the shaping operations phase of it. | ||
| Once that begins, Ukraine needs to hold their defensive lines. | ||
| They need tanks. So think of it as a tank provides them with protection from incoming fire, but it also allows them to pack a punch to fire back on the Russians during this offensive. | ||
| So that's a critical capability. | ||
| Some of the first leopard tanks that were pledged in the most recent weeks from European allies are expected to be delivered to Ukraine as early as next month. | ||
| That will be for this offensive. | ||
| We did hear from Jan Stoltenberg just recently about how Russia is planning this coming offensive and how the world needs to keep helping Ukraine so that they can defend against it. | ||
| Almost one year since the invasion, President Putin is not preparing for peace. | ||
| He is launching new offensives. | ||
| So we must continue to provide Ukraine with what it needs to win. | ||
| What Russia lacks in quality, they try to compensate in quantity. | ||
| The training... Don't have the same level as the Ukrainian forces, but they have more forces. | ||
| And the Russians are willing to send in those forces and take a high, high number of casualties with Russia. | ||
| Neither NATO nor NATO allies are party to the conflict. | ||
| What we do as NATO allies and NATO is to provide support to Ukraine. | ||
| Ukraine is defending itself. | ||
| We need to understand what this is. | ||
| This is a war aggression. | ||
| President Putin, Russia, has attacked a sovereign, independent, democratic, free nation in Europe, Ukraine. | ||
| And of course Ukraine has the right to defend itself. | ||
| The right of self-defense is enshrined in the UN Charter. | ||
| It's a part of international law. | ||
| And, of course, we have the right to help Ukraine uphold their right for self-defense. | ||
| So NATO and NATO allies are not party to the conflict, but we support Ukraine. | ||

| And you heard the madness, the literal madness of the MSNBC reporter. | ||
| She's sitting there and they're talking about, of course, she had a Freudian slip. | ||
| She said, well, we're here with the contract group. | ||
| I mean, the contact group. | ||
| And then she talks about an auction. | ||
| Let's go around. Do you have, who's got, you know, who's got shells for Ukraine? | ||
| Who's got tanks for Ukraine? | ||
| They're going to the Munich Defense Conference this week, which is just the arms dealers, the plowshares, and the swords crowd that are the war profiteers. | ||
| This is where Lindsey Graham goes over, and he's the king of it. | ||
| McCain used to be. So they've got this offensive and they're shelling around Bakhmut in an 800-mile front. | ||
| They've got a massive undertaking, which I don't know how the intelligence community missed this because she's talking about right there the fantasy of, oh, we're going to give them the tanks. | ||
| They're going to be there in a couple of months and they're going to pivot to a major spring offensive to go liberate Crimea. | ||
| And, of course, Stoltenberg at the end, NATO, we're not party to the conflict. | ||

| You're only doing targeting. | ||
| You're providing all the material, all the training. | ||

| The Ukrainians are the ones giving up the blood, right? | ||

| And the Ukrainian civilians, you remember that story in the New York Times of the weekend, had the little seven-year-old girl and her mother, the last kind of civilians they could find in Bakhmut. | ||
| They weren't leaving because they said there's no place to go. | ||
| All of it looks like the surface of the moon everywhere around that part of Ukraine. | ||
| Yet you've got the Russian army is coming in like they do, and they come in heavy, right, with artillery, tanks. | ||
| They're throwing, what is it, tens of thousands of rounds, we reported last night. | ||
| But I want you to know, NATO, the protectorate, it's a United States protectorate. | ||
| Don't think, the audience, don't think you're off the hook here. | ||
| You're paying for it. You're underwriting. | ||
| You know, Trump kind of had to try to get him to step up to the plate to do the thing, but Stoltenberg wants us to know, we're not party to the conflict. | ||

| Let's play the cold open for E.J. and Tony of Heritage, and then we'll get into the math today about your life, about inflation. | ||
| Let's hit it. This is just an economy that can't be tamped down. | ||
| It is a hot economy. | ||
| What's continuing to drive inflation even as interest rates go up? | ||
| Well, look, you can see the inflation rate. | ||
| I mean, inflation came down marginally in travel, but only marginally. | ||
| You saw used cars come down. | ||
| Housing has actually been surprisingly buoyant. | ||
| And we continue to talk just about the unemployment picture or the employment picture, which is unemployment sitting at three point four percent. | ||
| There is a view that if you really were to get down to two percent unemployment, you would two. | ||
| I'm sorry, two percent inflation that you'd have you by default have to push unemployment higher. | ||
| Something in the order, I mean, there's some people who believe you'd have to get over 4%, maybe even a full percentage point higher than we are today, which would be up to 4.4%. | ||
| Now, on relative terms, that's actually still remarkably low, you know, historically, but, you know, you're going to see a lot more job losses to get there. | ||
| And Joe Biden's going to name a top economic advisor today. | ||
| Who is it? What can you tell us? | ||
| Lael Brainard is the vice chairman at the Federal Reserve. | ||
| This would be a big move for her. | ||
| And if you are playing sort of the politics of this, it potentially puts her in position to take over the Treasury role. | ||
| Potentially in the future, if you believe that Janet Yellen were planning to step down either during this term or if you believe that President Biden gets... | ||
| Yeah. Janet Yellen. | ||
| Janet Yellen's thinking of stepping down. | ||
| Remember, she kind of tendered her resignation. | ||
| They had to hang around for her. | ||
| Wait for it. The debt ceiling. | ||
| They can't get anybody confirmed right now. | ||
| They know this. Let's go to E.J. and Tony. | ||
| You got Steve Cortez on deck. | ||
| Michael Patrick Leahy, everybody. | ||
| E.J., you put out a letter this morning. | ||
| You're not that impressed. | ||
| You're not buying the corporate business media. | ||
| You're not buying Morning Mika's analysis, Andrew Ross Sorkin's analysis of all this, sir? | ||
| No, not at all. Inflation continues to be a problem, and in fact, we saw in January the amount of price increases is actually accelerating, not slowing down. | ||
| On top of that, last quarter's estimates for inflation were revised much higher, from about 1.6 % to 3.2%, so effectively doubling those rates. | ||
| The Federal Reserve, it looks like they've really been premature in taking their foot off the brake here. | ||
| We've seen financial conditions across the economy continue to loosen week after week for several months now. | ||
| So we're loosening, not tightening. | ||
| So far from really wringing out the inflation from the economy, the Federal Reserve is not doing enough. | ||
| And on top of that, you have this Congress, which continues to overspend. | ||
| And so long as they do that, they are working at cross purposes to the Fed in terms of bringing down inflation. | ||
| You've got to go back to make sure the audience understands because the audience just lives for inside baseball. | ||
| They did the old okey-doke on us, the 1.6 to the 3.2. | ||
| Upon further review, it was twice as high. | ||
| Tell the audience why is that important. | ||
| Well, it's important because if you look at December, for example, the original estimate for December was a tenth of a percent decrease in prices, not increase. | ||
| And the revisions, in fact, flipped that to show a small increase, not a small decrease. | ||
| And the reason that's so important is because the Federal Reserve, among others, look at these numbers to see what are prices doing today, not just over the last year. | ||
| And so it looked like prices actually had stopped rising and in fact began falling, which would have been a very welcome sign, but that it turns out was not the case. | ||
| And so again, inflation is nowhere near as under control as we originally thought it was. | ||
| The Federal Reserve opened this Pandora's box and it's going to take a whole hell of a lot more for them to get it closed again. | ||
| But also the legislature has got to step up here. | ||
| This is the key to the debt ceiling debate, right? | ||
| The massive out-of-control spending, the debt limit, how we use that as leverage. | ||
| You agree that this just can't be the Fed anymore. | ||
| You're going to have to have some adults step up and say we can't keep throwing gasoline on the fire? | ||
| Oh, absolutely, and a key reason for that is because the Federal Reserve refuses to do what it should, which is not to strangle the private economy, but the public sector. | ||
| The Federal Reserve essentially created trillions of dollars for government to spend, and then instead of taking that money back, In order to wring this inflation out of the economy, they're going to the American people for their pound of flesh, and they're taking trillions of dollars out of the private sector. | ||
| And so as long as they have that mentality, the only way it's going to stop is if Congress stops with all this ridiculous spending. | ||

| Nothing but lies and misrepresentations. | ||
| Right now they want to wash their hands because they're not party to the conflict. | ||

| And the way they get out of it, they give the Ukrainians a menu. | ||
| You can get a steak. | ||
| You can get a lobster. You can get a hamburger. | ||
| You take it. But we do all the work. | ||
| So they're going to try to wash their hands of that. | ||
| They line on that. | ||
| The space aliens, they still can't stand up and just tell us, hey, if it's the CCP, we can deal with it. | ||
| But they got to keep going. We're not ruling out aliens, right? | ||
| Just kind of a misdirection play. | ||
| And then we're going to get to in a second in Ohio, in the land of the deplorables. | ||
| You know, they're doing controlled burns. | ||
| They got more phosgene gas in there than the first day of the SOM in the trenches, right? | ||

| But tell me about the basic, Matt. | ||
| This ought to be pretty straightforward to go through, right? | ||
| Inflation is still – the economy is a burning dumpster fire. | ||
| Is it not, sir? Yes, 100%. | ||
| Look, we have an economy that is decelerating, that is really crashing into the ditch. | ||
| Not my opinion. That is by the numbers. | ||
| If you look, for example, at PMIs, purchasing managers' indices, particularly on manufacturing, well below 50, meaning in recessionary territory right now. | ||
| Extremely low small business optimism. | ||
| And now today, we got something that nobody likes to start out Valentine's Day, a very unlovable inflation report showing us that inflation remains Very stubbornly high, largely because energy prices, as we talked about yesterday on this show, always trying to give you the next day's news, as we talked about yesterday, energy prices are remaining incredibly stubbornly high. | ||
| Energy prices should be coming down given the deceleration of the economy, especially in China, which is the most important global purchaser of energy. | ||
| But energy prices are not coming down materially. | ||
| As a matter of fact, they are $30 a barrel higher than they were on the current contract. | ||
| compared to when Joe Biden took office. | ||
| And so all of that translates into a miserable report today, well above expectation, tells us that the Fed does not have everything under control. | ||
| And in fact, the Fed in its most recent rate hike, where they de-emphasized their rate hikes from 50 basis points, meaning 0.5, they went down to 0.25%, was probably a mistake, Steve, because unfortunately, and I know a lot of folks out there probably don't want to hear this, But the Fed actually probably still needs to be raising very aggressively. | ||
| Why? Because of all the previous mistakes of the Fed, which is every bit as complicit and blameworthy as the Congress and President Biden are in what has been done to this country regarding the debt. | ||
| But let me show you a chart. | ||
| If we can pull it, please, chart number two to show you what I'm talking about here in the decline in real wages. | ||
| Because the unfortunate reality is we are now at 22 straight months of declining real wages, meaning your pay adjusted for the costs of the goods and services that you need in your life. | ||
| So that is one year back. | ||
| That is average hourly earnings. | ||
| Now, first of all, notice the incredible descent, the decided trend downward right now from the upper left, as you look at it on your screen, to the lower right. | ||
| Okay? Now, that is not real wages. | ||
| That's just nominal. That's just average hourly earnings year over year. | ||
| We are now down to 4.4%. | ||
| Steve, in normal times, that would actually be a pretty good wage. | ||
| But this is anything but normal times. | ||
| Because guess what? 4.4 % cannot compete with 6.4 % top-line inflation. | ||
| Now, I happen to believe inflation is far hotter than 6.4%. | ||
| But even if we take the government's numbers on their face, the fact is you are losing 2 % every single day you go to work. | ||
| That is the reality. Every single American is getting poorer by the day. | ||
| Poor. That's the macro number. | ||
| But you look at your thing, when you go through the basket of what real people have to live on, it's out of control. | ||
| It's a massive spread. Okay, then add on. | ||
| The Fed's been too dovish. | ||
| They did it for politics reasons, right? | ||
| Now they know they made a mistake again. | ||
| They're going off the jacket. You got to add on. | ||
| You have to add on the monthly loss in wages. | ||
| You've got to add on the new interest charge. | ||
| The interest charge for being a citizen of this country, right? | ||
| They give you another interest charge. | ||
| This is how Heritage gets their $7,400, and it's going to be higher than that. | ||
| Is it not Mr. | ||
| Steve Cortez? Absolutely. | ||
| Both at the personal level, I think the best example of that is to buy a new car. | ||
| Cars have never been less affordable than they are today in all of American history. | ||
| It takes more weeks of work for the median worker to buy a median price new car today in America than has ever been the case in all of our history. | ||
| That's the reality. So that's sort of the micro level, the household level. | ||
| And then when we look at the macro level for the country, and I put this in my Chalk Talk, which we played on the show yesterday, it's up on my social media right now in my Chalk Talk, I show that we are on track right now for about $700 billion, with a B, in interest expenses. | ||
| on the federal debt this year and that we are going to soon, within a couple of years, I don't mean decades off, within a couple of years, the interest cost on the federal debt is going to be more than what we spend on defense. | ||
| That is the reality right now because of rising interest rates, because of the Biden inflation and the debt bomb created by permanent Washington. | ||
| Here's the dead bomb. You had the great analogy. | ||
| It's so great, I'm stealing it, right? | ||
| And I'll give you credit the first time, but then it's mine. | ||
| No, the $250,000 per household, it's a second. | ||
| Hey, ladies and gentlemen, the government took out a second mortgage on your house. | ||
| $250,000 per household, isn't it? | ||
| $250,000, a quarter of a million dollars. | ||
| That's what we owe now. And it's not going to stop. | ||
| That's what came by. I said, give me the plan. | ||
| Show me the model. Show me how this doesn't get worse. | ||
| Show me. All you have to ask him is this. | ||
| Cut the happy talk. | ||
| Come and give me a war. Just give me. | ||
| We'll actually consider it. | ||
| Just give us the plan on Ukraine. | ||
| Now that we have the surprise Russian. | ||
| You wouldn't have heard about the Russian offensive. | ||
| Now they got it. | ||
| The winter offensive. You know, the Russians know how to fight in winter. | ||
| Ask Napoleon, ask the Swedes, ask the Wehrmacht, ask them. | ||
| They know how to fight, know how to take a punch and give one back, right? | ||
| Particularly during winter. They're good, okay? | ||
| So you got lies there. | ||
| We just want to see the model for going forward. | ||
| Tell us, show us what the model is. | ||
| What's the plan? How do you get out? | ||
| How do you stop adding trillions every year? | ||
| Now you got a trillion dollar loss over the balance sheet of the Fed that they're hiding, right? | ||
| You got this madness. | ||
| They won't come forward with anything. Cortez, hang right there. | ||
| We're getting much more into this. | ||
| Let me bring – because I'm going to get you something to get you happy now. | ||
| Only in the land of the deplorables can this happen, right? | ||

| The problem I got in this Ohio story, you can't get any information because everybody's running and hiding. | ||
| I don't see Alfred E. Buttigieg, the trans post secretary down there. | ||
| Remember, the train workers warned us about this a couple of months ago when they were going to have that strike, and Biden said everything's over. | ||
| The guy said, hey, what they want to do is have nobody in the trains. | ||
| They're bringing this hazmat all across the country. | ||
| They want to have a computer and one guy. | ||
| Right? So Norfolk Southern, and by the way, Norfolk Southern, $38 billion in assets, a $54 billion market capitalization, that's the stock times the price, right? | ||
| The shares times the price. | ||
| And they gave $25,000, $25,000 and set up an 800 number hotline if you're in East Palestine and have a problem, like your lungs are on fire. | ||
| Michael Patrick Leahy, what is going on? | ||
| Who authorized Look, derailments happen. | ||
| You've got to get to the bottom of it. There are like three derailments over the last 48 hours. | ||
| We've got to get to the bottom of it. But it's the controlled burn is the issue. | ||
| Who decided to burn this stuff just out in the atmosphere? | ||
| Who did it, Leahy? Well, Steve, our reporter in Ohio, Hannah Pulling, we have this story as our lead story at the Ohio Star. | ||
| The incident took place on February 3rd in the evening. | ||
| Lots of hazardous materials, vinyl chloride among them. | ||
| That happened on February 3. | ||
| On February 6, they were concerned, they say, the folks at Norfolk Southern, the railway, they were concerned that there were five carriages that contained vinyl chloride. | ||
| They were worried it might explode and send up deadly shards of the carriage trucks into the air and then down to the ground. | ||
| So what they executed on February 6 at 3.30 p.m., It was a controlled burn. | ||
| That's what they called it, Steve, a controlled burn. | ||
| Now, as you know, and you have pressed me on this issue constantly for the past several days, a controlled burn like that must be in compliance with federal law, which means the Environmental Protection Agency. | ||
| You look at the press, there's no indication that this was authorized or requested by Norfolk Southern of EPA. It probably was, but it's not been reported since February 6th. | ||
| And the consequences of this are dramatic. | ||
| Vinyl chloride, as you know, when it burns, it turns into hydrochloric acid and phosgene. | ||
| That's the poison gas they used in World War I. And since that burn in February 6th, we've had all sorts of reports of dead fish in the waters, people with headaches, going all the way down to Cincinnati and the Ohio River. | ||
| It is really... | ||
| An environmental disaster. | ||

| But back to your key question, that Norfolk Southern did not have the authority on its own to issue the order for the controlled burn on February 6th. | ||

| And nobody from the EPA or the National Transportation Safety Board or from The Department of Transportation has made any public statement saying, yes, we received the request from Norfolk Southern to do a controlled burn and we authorized it. | ||

| They keep the schools closed for a year because of the pandemic, because the teachers are too lazy to want to go to school, so they closed the schools for a year for the pandemic. | ||

| And he's saying that even he, as the sitting senator from Ohio so far, has been unable to get satisfactory answers from the federal government, from the EPA, regarding this catastrophe. | ||
| And he also pointed out, quite rightly, that perhaps one reason that the EPA is so incompetent in this case, among others, is that it's focused on ridiculous canards like so-called racial environmental justice, rather than actually protecting the water and ground and skies of the United States, which it is supposed to do. | ||
| Much like the military is totally lost focus and has become consumed at the highest levels of the brass, unfortunately, with a social justice warrior agenda, rather than being actual lethal warriors defending the United States. | ||
| Same kind of phenomenon Going on, unfortunately, with the EPA. But I do believe that Vance is going to continue to be maybe the lone voice among significant Ohio leaders in advocating for these good people and making sure that we get the answers we need and that those people are safe in their homes and in their schools. | ||
| You know, he's made a statement, he put a statement yesterday on Twitter or something like that, but people should know, for a couple days, and he's a very dialed-in guy and a very smart guy. | ||
