I'm talking to young people who want to know the truth.
So don't be idle.
Turn in your Bible, everyone, to Deuteronomy chapter 32, verse 31. Moses gives his farewell address here when drawing near in the desert to the promised land.
And Moses, looking upon this vast new generation of young people, warned them of false gods that would take place of the true God and says, Their rock is not our rock.
You see, the people were wandering around in the desert where all kinds of rocks could be seen.
Small rocks, jaggedy rocks, splinty rocks.
You trip on them, you crack your head on them.
But a real rock, our rock, says Moses, is invincible.
You can stand on it and not slip on it.
That rock is Jesus Christ.
He pours out streams of water in the desert for the people.
That rock is not our rock.
There are rocks today in America, false gods, newly come up, messing with your lies in every way.
First, the rock of disillusionment.
Young males today are teeming with desire to do something and to be something.
Young females are teeming with desire to be that special other, that...
Cosmic life force that just won't quit.
But there's disillusionment and questioning that they got the wrong body to escape from to a supposed right body to scrape up as some positive outcome.
But Jesus says, I give life, life more abundantly, without you shaping it with no artifice and device.
Why don't you have this?
Their rock is not our rock.
Second, the rock of possessions.
Youth are stuck in a secular culture that places high esteem on things, not on things that make sense, goals to achieve, that is, to reach physical and moral excellence.
You are the temple of the Holy Spirit, says St. Paul.
Your precious possession is the temple of your body, so use it in a praiseworthy way as your Creator made it.
The rock is not our rock.
Third, The rock of wrong objectives.
The world says you have to have pleasure, sexual gratification, instant porn, and assorted use of your God-given reproductive organs.
But Jesus says, leave your father and mother a cleave to your wife.
The rock is not our rock.
I'm talking about your generation, your future, our future, America's future.
For without a vision, the people perish, and it begins with you, the youth.
We won't, no we can't, solve our problems with executive orders and elections.
Change must begin in the human heart and in the heart's affections.
Their cure is not our cure.
Our cure is getting a new heart by being born of water and spirit.
Holy baptism of the Orthodox Church.
The cure flows from our rock, the Lord Jesus Christ, who pours out streams of water into our lives.
Jesus hides us in the cleft of the rock, so we have him enveloping and embracing us.
Get yourself a big piece of the rock.
Get the whole rock, the body of Christ, his church, his people.
