They're hiding from God.
We unconsciously hide from God when we say, God's not there.
When we say to ourselves, God feels so distant.

There are degrees of sin.

Pilate, Pontius Pilate, he is the lonely man with the lesser sin of crucifying Jesus Christ.
But it's sin nonetheless driving its knife deep within.

I have not read that in tradition, but what we have read from historical writers Philo and Josephus is that he became exceedingly viciously murderous.
And others have said that he was driven to insanity.
That's because even though it was the lesser sin, Jesus Christ told him, you have the lesser sin.
This is before he crucified him.
So Jesus Christ already told him, you have the lesser sin.
The other people, the Jewish people, are the greater sin.
