Mr. Eclipse, told ABC the total solar eclipse on August 21st is particularly rare because it's the first time the path of totality exclusively crosses the continental United States from coast to coast since June 8th, 1918.
It's also the first continent-wide eclipse to be visible only from the United States since
1770.
That's the really unique thing, Espenak told ABC News.
It's not a particularly long total eclipse.
It's not an especially wide path of totality, but it crosses the U.S.

It's the instant when the axis of that shadow, if you could imagine that axis piercing the Earth, As the Moon sweeps across the planet, it's the instant when that axis passes closest to the very center of the Earth.

Those statistics are from 2015.
They're always two years behind.
And this was not happening 50 years ago.

So what happens is last night I catch similar tripe being published about how the University of Texas is going to remove the Robert E. Lee statue from in front of Benedict Hall, a very popular, a very... It just suddenly gets announced hours before.
And so I get down there probably around 1230, 1245 last night, and they're already removing it.
There's a police line.
You can't even come within 100 yards of these things.
And there's a group of some protesters out there.
There's a bunch of media out there.
And I'll get to that in a second, but here's the unbelievable statement, really, that I think people should be concerned about.
University of Texas President Greg Fenves says that they're removing the statue because, I quote, they are symbols of modern white supremacy and neo-Nazism.
Okay, this is so historically inaccurate that you would think it's coming from a member of Antifa.
No, this is coming from the President of the University of Texas.
The Civil War had nothing to do with slavery until the very end, and that's why they now want Lincoln taken down, because he wrote in letters, if I could end this war and not free one slave, I'd do it.
Christians for Before the country was founded, we're trying to get slavery banned.
They'd gotten it banned in England and Europe before that, by about 1800 or so.
And then they had laws out trying to stop it.
So that was a backdrop, but they just create this whole mental illness.
We got people to sign a petition to remove George Washington from the dollar bill.
So, they don't know where... They'll go forever.
These people, they're LARPing, they have no accomplishment in their life, they see a statue come down and they think this is them... Well, it's a manifestation of how they're trying to cause a civil war around this.

I kind of walk past the line of media, I walk past the group of protesters, and I try to get close to the statue just to film it, and there's a little police blockade there, probably about 10 yards from the actual statue, and then there's about 100 to 150 yards of space in between that and the rest of the people.
They won't even let you go on these stairs.
These statues are so racist, you have to have a safe space of at least 100 yards so you can't even see them.
So then I'm just standing there, much like you were doing in Seattle.

If I were President Trump and I wanted to prove to the base in this moment that he was still on the agenda with the economic nationalist plan, I would get that whiteboard, put it up in the Oval Office, stand in front of it, tweet a picture out of it, and that will make people reassured that just because Bannon's left, it doesn't mean that the Western Democrats are in charge.
And let's be clear, we have a true Nazi collaborator, Soros, who is literally behind almost all of this with other big megacorporations, trying to sow racial division in fighting, and then they point at us and call us Nazis.

And you guys want to have a statue to this in your city?
And these people, I'm telling you, Alex, the way they smelled, the way they looked, they were completely just twisted.

Well the Seattle mayor, I actually held their feet to the fire and I used their own rules against him because going out there with the megaphone peacefully and peacefully calling for it to be taken down.
The Seattle mayor the next day said he agreed that it should be taken down.
I get your point, fighting fire with fire, but in a way these evil guy statues are monuments to what they did.
We should be aware of them, and aren't we kind of fitting into the virtue signaling when we start getting into this game of pulling stuff down?

Alex, it reminds me of a situation where you had one person in there, like we had at different points of the campaign, that was closer to sort of more of an ear of the people.

We're not in the business in the United States of running other countries.
There hasn't been any official leaks or any official response about what the speech is going to be.
But the big problem, and Alexander the Great learned this going back 2,000 years ago, is that when you march into Afghanistan and look like an occupying force, This is fourth generation warfare, Alex.

It makes you look like the overpowering aggressor and it's going to make people want to rise up against that force.
We've got to find a way to make it look like it's Afghanistan getting our help to push out the extremists, not another invasion of the country, not an occupying force.
That's the message that we need to send.

About any sort of surge, any massive, you know, whether or not tanks and armor are going to be going in, what type of uniforms people are going to be wearing.
In fact, Eric Prince, in his plan, he said, we weren't even going to wear US uniforms.
We were going to have people wear sort of this joint uniform that didn't specify it to make us look like these occupying forces.
Well, what I can relay is that he's essentially been sidelined at this point by the National Security Council.
At one point, his plan, there are people saying that actually Kelly was considering his plan, was looking at it and saying, you know what, this makes sense.
Alex, at this point, no one will talk about the numbers.
We already have about 8,000 troops and over 10,000 more contractors in Afghanistan.
So his plan was to reduce that number down to make us, instead of looking like an occupying force, we were going to send contractors in, people that had the mandate of the U.S.
government, they'd be working for the U.S.
government, but with Afghanistan Special Forces, with Afghanistan Army, to work culturally With the leaders over there that are willing to be on board with the United States to look for stability.
So it's not the U.S.
going in there and telling Afghanistan what to do.
It's that we're working to achieve stability rather than going in with a massive occupying force because his worry, Alex, Eric told me that he that if the U.S.
goes and sends another 5,000, 6,000 troops to Afghanistan, it's going to look like a massive invasion.
That's what happened in Iraq after the complete pullout during Obama.
But what wasn't at the table was this third option of a reduction of, instead of having a massive force, have a smaller, smarter force that goes in with the mandate of using Afghan troops.
Sure, and there's going to be parts of Afghanistan that the U.S.
unfortunately remained in for a long time because a lot of people in the Beltway are talking about it like Germany or Japan or South Korea, where the U.S.
essentially has permanent forces now and permanent bases.
They're talking about permanent bases in Afghanistan.

I want to get back to this story about the USS McCain, because tonight we're going to have Donald Trump Selling the country on the plan that was put together by the generals at Camp David on Friday, the day that they got rid of Steve Bannon.
As you heard Jack Posobiec say, Steve Bannon was going to present a different approach, approach that coincided with what What Donald Trump ran on when he ran for president, the agenda that he wanted to do, to put basically America first.
To not get us tied into a forever war.
He was not allowed to present that plan.
He was removed.
And the day that he was removed, they had this Meeting in Camp David, and the way that it was reported by General Mattis, the Secretary of Defense, he said, Trump delegated to me when he came in the tactical and operational decisions.
He did not delegate one ounce of the strategic decision.
Well, what was Bannon's position there in the White House?
Well, he was the White House chief strategist.
He would have had something to say about this.
And, of course, he was removed by the generals, by McMaster, from the National Security Council as soon as McMaster Was put in there and then he was removed from the Camp David meeting where they're going to talk about an Afghan strategy and this is what Mattis said.
He said Trump came in with a very different course of action and I think he now needs the weekend to collect his thoughts about how he's going to explain it to the American people.
We're going to hear that explanation tonight.
And that's going to be at 9 o'clock Eastern Time.
Donald Trump is going to go live.
And so, the troop increase, and don't let them fool you on this.
I don't like to talk about tactics and strategies.
Yes, yes, he is a major general.
A very modern major general, if you know Gilbert and Sullivan.
But look, let's understand the difference between a troop increase And a strategy that says, this is what winning looks like.
Here's when we know we're done in Afghanistan.
If you don't hear that tonight, you should be having warning bells going off.
BS should be going off when you hear this plan.
Because we need to know what their strategy is.
We need to know how they define success.
We need to know how long they're going to take to do this.
That is the strategy.
Increasing the troops by 4,000 or by whatever the number that they come up with.
That is simply a tactic.
And when we have this discussion tonight, I want you to keep in the back of your mind the tragedy that just happened again, just two months after we had a similar strategy.
The USS McCain colliding with a merchant ship at sea.
This is the fourth mishap this year at sea.
And this is what the person who wrote about this in USA Today pointed out.
As we said, there is a very high-tech, isolated control system that is in the Combat Information Center.
There's no windows, you can't see obstacles, but there's several sailors, and they've got all these radar screens and military sensors and so forth.
And, of course, that could be easily hacked.
But then you also have, on the bridge of the destroyer, at least five watchstanders, and then you have additional people forward and aft of the ship.
All of these systems failed not just once, but twice in two months.
What is going on?
Well, here's the consequences of this that he points out.
He said, generally when something like that happens, you look at the chain of command.
Are these guys literally asleep at the wheel?
What's going on?
But he goes, this has a big effect and when we see this many incidents, we know that this is not the problem of one commander.
This is some kind of a systemic problem.
And he points out, after this incident, we've now got 25% of the total force of Destroyer Squadron 15 now indefinitely out of commission during a period of heightened tensions between North Korea and the U.S.
and its allies, and senseless deaths of sailors, and the indefinite loss of two $2 billion ships.
This is what we're getting from the military.
Are we getting our money's worth?
Are we getting involved in wars that we have no plans of winning, that we have no strategy to finish?
I think we are.
And I think a key part of this goes back to H.R.
McMaster, and I'll tell you why.
He wrote a book called Dereliction of Duty, and that is now pretty much required or recommended reading for the Marine Corps, for many others in the military, and what it is is an after-action report of the Vietnam War.
The central thesis of that, when he said the dereliction of duty, he believed the dereliction of duty wasn't so much a failure of civilian leadership.
He said the civilians didn't know what they were doing, and the dereliction of duty was on the part of the military who didn't tell them what to do.
I think McMaster and the other generals are telling Trump what to do.
I think they told him to do something that he did not want to do.
That he said was the wrong thing when he was running for president.
That we agreed with him on.
Said we don't want a forever war.
So we want to watch this very carefully tonight to see what is happening.
As Alex said, this may be the point at which things go sideways.
We're going to watch this very carefully.
