Hello everybody, Mike Reigns here to talk to you about Craps, the dice game that's in casinos everywhere.
It's tons of fun.
All the kids are doing it.
Well, no, they're not.
You've got to be 21 to get into a casino, 18 in some places like Turning Stone.
But anyways, let's talk about Craps.
So how does Craps work?
What is the basic concept of the game?
Well, the basic concept of the game is a bet called the pass line.
And the pass line bet is basically the bet that everyone's on.
It's the universal bet everyone's playing.
So when you see a craps table and everyone cheers, it's probably because they won on the pass line.
And how does that bet work?
So when a game is starting, the pass line bet is done as what is called a come out roll.
Sex joke.
Huzzah.
Hilarious.
Yeah And on the come out roll, on the opening roll, you win on a 7 or an 11 and you lose on a 2, 3, or 12.
Now that sounds.
like three numbers for the bad guys and two numbers for the good guys, but you need to understand that when two dice are rolled, seven is the most likely number to come out.
This means that you are way more likely to win than you are to lose on the opening roll.
Now, if you roll a 4, 5, 6, or an 8, 9, 10, those are what are called point numbers.
And if you roll one of those, you have made point or set point, I should say.
And when you've set the point, now the whole game becomes, you have to roll the point again before you roll a seven.
So if you roll the dice and you roll a six, the point is now six.
And you have to roll a six before you roll a seven.
When you're on the come out roll, there will be a button on the table that will be black with the word off and white letters.
When a point is established, the button will be flipped over to a white side with black letters that read on.
And that button will be placed on the point number so everyone at the table knows what the winning number is.
Once that happens, once the point is established and you are on the pass line you then want to do what's called backing your bet or taking odds this is the best bet in the casino because every bet in the casino has a house edge basically there's a mathematical payout that we should be paying you and then there's what we actually do pay you and the difference between those two numbers is the house's edge on you Odds
is the only bet in the casino where we pay you the mathematically true value of your bet.
So what you are supposed to win is what you do win.
So that makes odds great.
It's an incredible bet.
Now, as I said a minute ago, the 7 is the most likely number to come out.
Basically, the closer you are to 7, the more likely it is you are to make the number.
The further away you are from 7, the harder it is to make the number.
So the odds has to pay fair, which means on a 6 or an 8, the odds pay 6 to 5.
So $10 will get you $12.
On a 5 or 9, the odds will pay you 3 to 2.
So $10 will get you $15.
the four and the ten are very hard to hit.
So the odds will pay you two to one.
so 10 will get you 20.
And that is basic craps.
That is the base game.
If you just do that, you're having a good time.
You're enjoying yourself.
Now think about that.
Think that, let's say you put $5 down or $10 down, some small bet on the pass line, 10 bucks, we'll say, and you roll a six.
You're allowed to double your pass line bet on the odds.
Some joints will let you do five times or even, But let's just say that the house you're playing at is a two to one house.
So you got 10 on the pass line, you put 20 on the odds, and you're in the game for 30 bucks.
And this is the thing is that your bet might last like 10 rolls for all you know, because if you don't roll the point and you don't roll a seven, the game just continues, and you're not losing or winning any money.
So the point's a six, you roll a five, you roll a nine, you roll a ten, you roll another nine, you roll another ten.
You're not winning or losing.
You're just sweating every roll and going, come on, six, let's go.
Let's win some money.
So in that way, your money can last longer and you can get more bang for your buck than, say, at blackjack.
Literally every hand of blackjack is bing, bang, boom, out in 25 seconds or so.
And you're going to win or lose on most of your hands of blackjack.
Very rarely do you push.
So if you're betting $10 on blackjack, that $10 could turn into $30, $40, $50.
I mean, to play craps effectively, you do want to get more money down on the table for more sweat, more action.
But base game, just learning it, just want to get your toe in the water.
It's not that bad a game and it won't cost you that much unless the dice are ice cold and you just keep sevening out right after you establish the point.
So beyond that, the other bets you can make that are solid bets are what's called place bets.
You can place the six and the eight and the nine and the five and you can buy the four and the ten.
Now all those numbers you can buy or place, but they've done the math and placing the six and the eight and the five and the nine is best and buying the four and the ten is best.
And that is basically just I say that number is going to come out and before a seven.
And if it does, I get paid.
And you get paid close to the odds percentage.
I think it's seven to six on the six and the eight.
I have not played craps in a little while.
So the math for me is fuzzy.
on those buy and place bets.
So you're a craps fraud, someone yells.
And I'm like, guilty is charged.
You got me.
Take me off to craps jail.
But again, you're just betting a number there now another thing you can do to get action is to play the come sex joke, part two, Zing.
The come basically is treating the next roll as though it were the first roll.
So it treats it as though 7-11 wins, 2-3-12 loses.
And the way this works is you roll the dice on the come, and let's say the point is a nine.
And the shooter, you walk to the table, you put one in the come line, shooter rolls a five.
Now the table has a point of nine.
You have a personal point of five.
So So now let's say that you were starting the shoot and you play the pass line, you roll a nine, then you play the come and you roll an eight and then you play the come again and you roll a four.
That's how I play crabs.
I get three numbers working, two on the come, one on the pass line.
And now I got three numbers and I'm happy with it.
And I just run them.
And however that shakes out, it shakes out.
I like having that kind of action.
That's my standard crabs play.
And again, the house edge on this game is very small, about like one and a half percent.
So you got a good shot.
You can win, you can lose, but that's how it goes.
Now you can get into bets that have a bigger house edge, and there's tons of those.
And the other thing you're going to notice is that when you go to a crabs table, the bad bets got graphics, they got numbers, they got dice, they are enticing, they're exciting to look at.
And the bets that are good are boring and don't really have much going for them.
They're trying to steer you away from them.
One not great bet is the field bet.
And the field bet looks enticing because boy, does it have a lot of numbers on it the two the three the four the nine the ten the eleven the twelve all those numbers on the table and the two and the twelve pay double so you look at that you think wow i get the two three four and then i get the nine ten eleven twelve that's like eight numbers that's so many numbers but what you don't get is the five six seven eight and though that's way more likely to come out than all
the numbers listed on the field bet what some people like to do on the field bet is to use it as a hedge on the come out because on the come out you lose on 2312 but on the field, you win.
And on the field, you win double on the 2 and 12.
So some people like to play the field to protect their pass line bet.
And if you hit the 11, you win both.
So I'm not saying it's smart, but I'm saying it's a strategy that people use.
Another bet that you'll see is the hard ways.
And the hard ways are when the two dice are rolled and the same number comes out.
That is considered a hard.
So you can have a hard 4, a hard 6, a hard 8, or a hard 10.
The 2 and the 12 are never considered hard because the only way to roll them is hard.
You can only roll a two with two ones and you can only roll a 12 with two sixes.
So when the four, six, eight, or ten are rolled, the dealer will call easy or hard.
And this is because on the hardways bets, you lose if the numbers rolled easy or the shooter sevens out.
And so the And again, these are not great, great bets.
but they pay good and this is one of the other things about craps that makes it uh appealing is that blackjack will have funky side bets but that's really the only thing that blackjack has going for it for big payouts and i mean you win three to two on blackjack but three to two ain't really great odds and craps has the base game where you're winning and playing at a good house with a low house edge,
but it also has like the shots.
It also has the, you bet this and you hit it and you win big money.
which is another reason why people like to play it.
Another big money bet is the horn.
The horn numbers are the 2, 3, 11, and 12.
You can play them dead on.
The 3 and the 11 pay 15 to 1.
This is a one roll bet.
And the 2 and the 12 pay 30 to 1.
Or you can bet, there's a little spot on the table that was a horn bet.
And the horn covers all four numbers and you get paid 4 to 1 if a 3 or 11 get rolled.
You get paid 7.5 to 1 if the 2 or the 12 get rolled.
A standard phrase you'll hear at the crabs table every so often.
often is see a horn play a horn which means if someone rolled a horn number bet the horn because now the horn's hot and now more horn numbers are going to come out because people love superstition you might see a section of the table called the big six eight that's terrible don't touch that in a million years buy or place the six and the eight if you're going to play them The last thing on the regular way to play craps is what's called the hop table.
And the hop is basically betting the exact combination of the dice to come out.
So if you hop the six, you can hop, you can bet the 5-1, you can bet the 4-2, and you can bet the 3-3.
If you bet a hard way, it's 30-1.
If you bet the easy ways for the two dice to come up different numbers, that is 15-1.
And you can hop any number you want.
You can just hop one combination.
You can say, I'm going to play the 2-4 on the six.
And then if it hits, you get paid 15-1.
That is that.
There's some other crazy bets out there like all small, all tall, hit them all.
Not at all casinos.
That bet is after a point is established, will the shooter.
roll 2 through 6 as all small?
Will they roll 4 through 12 as all tall?
Or will they quote unquote roll them all, which is every number before the 7?
And those pay out ridiculous.
And they're also really impossible to hit.
So again, play them only if you're just taking a shot.
Now, the other way you can bet this game is by going evil.
You can bet against the shooter.
This is called dark side because the pass line is the front line of the table.
The line next to that is don't pass.
That means that the shooter loses.
The shooter sevens out, and they're beaten.
So you can bet on the house winning the roll if you want to.
You'll see the graphic on the table says don't pass bar 12, and that's just on the opening roll.
On the two and the three, you win.
On the 12, you push.
And that is the very slight change they have to make to make the don't pass have a a slight house advantage instead of having a slight player advantage if they actually paid the 12 which only happens one out of every 36 rolls that little change would make it a profitable player play.
So people would always do that.
One day I had a bunch of guys, young guys at the table.
They were shooting dice.
They were losing.
And one of them said, man, if I could bet against myself, I'd be making a killing here.
And I told them, oh, you can.
And suddenly they all started betting don't pass.
And they were right.
They were losing.
They were sevening out.
And that meant that we're now winning because they were playing on the opposite side.
And they all had a great time.
And when people would come up to the table, they would tell those people, guys, we're playing bad.
We're playing crazy.
Just understand that we're rooting for sevens and stuff.
And it was a good time.
But you can do that buy and place the other numbers there, you can place to lose or lay the other numbers.
One strategy that I've seen people use is, and this means you're betting a seven to come out before that number is hit.
And a strategy that I've seen with this is on the come out roll.
Someone will lay all six point numbers.
They will lay the 456 and the 8910 and they will hope the shooter rolls a seven because then they win on the pass line and they win all the lays on top of it.
So if the shooter rolls a five, they lose the lay on the five because the five came out and then they'll pull all the other bets down.
One quick thing to note in craps is that you can take most bets down anytime you want.
Like suddenly the shooter's given you the hebbie gibbs.
Something just happened.
You don't like it.
You want to leave.
So you just grab your chips off the table and you're done.
The only bets you cannot take down at any given time are the pass line and the come line bets.
Those are what are called contract bets that have to be played to the end because on the pass line, you are the favorite on the opening roll because again, the seven's way more likely to come out than the 2, 3, and 12.
And the 11 is just a cherry on top.
And if we let you pull your bet after the come out roll, after the come out roll, you're the underdog.
So if you just said, fuck this and just pulled your money off the table, then the house would lose and we wouldn't run craps.
So no, that wouldn't happen.
So pass line bet has to be played to the end.
And since the come is a, is a, So those bets, they stay on the table until the shooter wins or loses.
So that's craps betting.
Pretty much all taken care of.

Hello, I'm Gidden.
Fembroccoli.
It's A talk about craps lingo because craps has a lot of terminology to it.
And I've been not using it.
And if you were a craps player, you'd be saying, Mike, why are you saying wrong things?
Because at a craps table, we don't say 2 and 12 we say snake eyes and boxcars two is snake eyes because it's two little dots they're like the eyes of a snake uh people also say two aces i prefer snake eyes and uh 12 is boxcars because the three the two lines the two lines of three dots each are like the cars on a train so they're boxcars uh the three is known as aciducy the aciducy one two three and
uh the eleven is known as the yo and that one's the most important of all four because the other three are just fun nicknames that people give the roles but the yo is important because it's actually a part of casino talk.
It's actual things the dealers have to say.
Because at a live crap table, you've got a guy on the left, you've got a guy on the right, you've got a guy in the middle, you have a pit boss watching all three of them.
Let's say the dice get rolled so the guy on the right is watching it and the guy on the right sees an 11 and he says 11.
It's loud Friday night, got big crowd, got bump of music.
Guy on the other side of the table hears seven, starts taking people's bets down, starts stacking chips and everyone starts throwing a fit now we got a problem now we got to call surveillance we got to check the bets we got to fix it we got to put those bets back down it's a whole thing so in order to prevent the seven and eleven from being miscommunicated the eleven had to get a nickname and that nickname is yo so whenever you see an eleven get rolled the stick man
calling the action is going to say yo yo 11.
That way everyone knows exactly what got rolled and there's no confusion.
Now, the hard ways, the hard four, the double deuce because it's two twos.
Up here in Boston, the hard six, the three three, that's Larry Bird, obviously.
The four four, that has the nickname the square pair because the four looks like a square on the dice.
It's a little dot on each of the four corners.
And the hard 10 is the speed limit because you can drive 55.
so That's the wing go.
That's the stuff that people say at the table when people are rolling the dice.
I've seen everything.
I've seen all kinds of like phrases for everything.
I saw a guy, someone rolled a six, four or two, and he said, easy six, four or two, the lumber number, because it's a two by four, get it.
So we got jokes in the casinos.
We got jokes for days, baby.
So like that is, that's the lingo.
That's what you actually say when you're at the table.
On top of that, the custom.
of the superstition of craps.
You should do not say seven when you're at the table.
Don't do it.
Even some people will get mad about the whole seven being a winning number on the opening roll because the vast majority of the time when you're playing the game, the seven is the bad number.
It's what makes you lose.
So people don't like it when you bring up the seven.
It's known as the devil at the table.
So, especially after a point is established, do not talk about the seven, because that could...
And if the shooter were to seven out right afterwards, they'd all blame you for it because you summoned it.
You brought it forth.
You spoke its name.
The seven is Voldemort.
You don't say it.
So remember that.
Remember that when you go to the blackjack table, the crops table.
I'm a little tired tonight, but I'm getting through it.
And the final thing to talk about is cheating.
How do people cheat at craps and can you cheat at craps?
Well, the first thing you may have heard of is something called dice control, where people hold the dice a certain way and throw them with a certain flick of the wrist, and they get the dice to land the way they want.
And I'm here to tell you that dice control does not exist, because we don't talk talk about it in casinos.
If it existed, we would be on the lookout for it.
Card counting is real.
Card counting exists.
We look out for card counting.
I have never had a meeting about dice control because dice control doesn't happen.
Can't happen.
It's a joke.
So don't have to worry about that.
Don't have to worry about dice control.
No one does it because no one can.
When you're rolling dice on craps, they're going to tumble on the table.
They're going to move.
It's going to be a random roll.
We're going to ask you to try to hit the wall.
You're going to notice that the wall.
is set up like the bottom of an egg cart.
It's got all these little things jutting out from it.
And that's so that when you hit the wall with the dice, the dice., the dice will take funny bounces and deflect and move around.
As long as it's a random roll, that's all we want.
Because random rolls favor the house.
We're just trying to prevent people from being able to do stuff to manipulate the dice to get a non-random roll, to get a roll they set.
Fiken presents you a super-enclose friendship program for all their accounting things.
That was easy.
Fiken, a super-enclose friendship program.
Now we've gotten a new in-in in-in from here.
Thank you for the congratulations, Måten.
It's hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of people who should have a gratulation.
Yeah.
Yeah, thank for gratulation, Morten.
And that's mostly from loading the dice, trying to put an unbalanced die or a magnetic die into the game.
which we have many forms of game security to try to prevent that.
The first of which you'll notice when you're at a crap stable is all the dice are translucent.
That makes it harder for someone to sneak a weight into a die that could make it such that you could get the die to come out more likely on one side than another because it's weighted so that that weighted side is going to go to the bottom and flip the top number more likely.
Another thing that is part of game security is the dice will have a three digit number on the six side of the dice.
That number will be in gold and it's a batch number.
Those, the five dice that we start with on a table, they all have that same batch number.
So if a die gets thrown off a table, we pick that die up and we check it.
We check to make sure that it still has the right batch number on it.
So it has not been switched for a different die by somebody working to try to get a loaded or magnetic die into the game.
And casinos.
will shift those dice out every eight to ten hours or so so if the dice were number eight one zero at ten at 10 in the morning, sometime around like 5 o'clock, now the dice are going to be dice number 336.
So we can't have a team of people come in, read the dice in the morning, and then load dice for the later in the day.
That's another way to maintain the dice from being tampered with by the other players.
And the final thing that we looked for is sliding.
Because if a player throws one die in the air and then just glides the other one along the felt of the table and doesn't actually roll it, that could give them a big advantage.
And the main way to prevent sliding is that players have to roll the dice a certain distance.
That's why we tell them to hit the wall because you can't slide a die very far.
The amount of momentum you need is to move the die without actually getting it to tip is very difficult.
So we're like, yo.
uh throw the die with enough force to get it to hit the wall or get close to the wall at least and you might get a warning or two but if if you're not hitting the wall consistently they'll eventually start they'll eventually take the dice away from you they'll be like look you got to learn how to roll the dice properly for us to let you roll them.
And being the shooter is fun.
If you're a hot shooter, you can get tipped.
It's crazy.
Like you might not be playing that big, but if you're rolling and winning for high rollers, they might throw you some money.
They'll be like, yeah, great job shooter.
Boom, keep it up shooter.
And they'll take care of you because people in a casino like to throw money around.
It's why you're in a casino.
And I've seen it.
I've seen shooters get tips from the whales that are doing good on the table because the shooter's hot.
So.
I think that about covers everything about craps.
I'm racking my brain for any last minute thoughts or things to like tell you about this game, I guess.
And I'm coming up empty.
So this is going to be one of those things where in about a half hour, I'm like, oh, crap, I should have said that.
That'd have been great, but I didn't.
Oh, well.
But yep, I think I covered it.
I think I did everything I needed to do.
And thank you all for listening.
