The Atlantic reported that the racism surrounding the Obama phone video came from media outlets using it to play on racist stereotypes rather than the video itself.

The coverage of the Obamaphone Lady video was full of accusations of racism, and I think that people were right to make this charge. Outlets like The Atlantic ran pieces about how racist everyone's response to the video was, but they make an important distinction that the video itself isn't racist, nor is the person who recorded it or posted it. They assert that, quote, "The racism comes when Drudge, Rush, the people who giddily retweeted the link, do a mental calculation that if enough people would just see this video they would support Romney because it plays on the same racist stereotypes." The article in The Atlantic goes on to say, quote, The video's subject wasn't picked out because she happens to be black. She was picked out because she is black.
