Anthropologist Walter Van Beek found that the Dogon knowledge of Sirius stars was likely fabricated or misinterpreted by earlier researchers.

So, unfortunately, in 1991, anthropologist Walter Van Beek led a team to live among the Dogon, ultimately spending a full decade living... On day one, they were offered a Coke. He found that a whole lot of the things that Grielle and Dirtalen were saying, and people had accepted as fact, were super suspicious and likely made up. He wrote this about the serious idea. Though they do speak of Sigutolo, interpreted as Griel, as their name for Sirius itself, they disagree with each other as to which star is met. For some, it's an invisible star that should rise to announce the Sigu, or the festival, like a holy festival. For another, it's Venus, though in a different position, appears as Sigutolo. All of them agree, however, that they were told about the star from Griel.
