The CIA used media organizations primarily as cover for agents operating abroad rather than to control domestic news narratives.
More than a dozen United States news organizations and commercial publishing houses formerly provided cover for CIA agents abroad. A few of these organizations were unaware that they provided this cover. A lot of the intersection of the CIA and the media is the CIA using media organizations as unwitting cover stories for their agents. Either way, this is far more complicated than saying that the media took over, got taken over by the CIA in 1952.
