So what happened was you have the British intelligence earlier on and then the CIA training a lot of these people, particularly in 1979 with Afghanistan and in terms of the Cold War, how to do counterintelligence and how to do these sorts of operations. And that's why it's so close to the style of guerrilla warfare that you see, for example, with the Phoenix program or with earlier CIA operations like Gladio, both Douglas Valentine's book on the Phoenix program and the Paul Williams book on Gladio highlight the similarities between the terror training that went on with Gladio, the terror training that goes on with the Green Berets who were recruited into the Phoenix program, and the terror training and skills that Al-Qaeda happens to possess.
