[00:00:00]  In the late 1950s, a cultural and artistic movement known as Kitchen Sink Realism formed in Britain.
[00:00:07]  For many, it was the first time seeing the harsh realities of the downtrodden represented in creative media.
[00:00:15]  Kitchen Sink Realism first took form in the shape of theatre productions such as Look Back in Anger, which is set entirely in an overcrowded council flat in the East Midlands, which happens to be where I'm from.
[00:00:27]  Kitchen Sink Realism dramatised the underbelly of Britain, bearing it warts and all to the nation.
[00:00:33]  At that time, artificial, feel-good plays about happy families were generally the norm.
[00:00:39]  Meanwhile, the country was a rough, harsh and broken place to live for the vast majority of the underprivileged.
[00:00:46]  Whilst the old plays offered soft escapism for the viewer, Kitchen Sink Realism did the opposite.
[00:00:53]  It kicked the door in and aired out the dirty laundry.
[00:00:57]  This is a concept close to my heart and has always been at the back of my mind when producing all of my own independent projects.
[00:01:04]  Problem is, there's less and less of this in today's modern media.
[00:01:09]  As a response to all of this, I've created Away Days.
[00:01:12]  A new project that you could say is kitchen sink journalism.
[00:01:17]  A reportage from the fringes of society that doesn't seek to caricature it or soften the blow at all.
[00:01:24]  I'm presenting to you real-life countercultures without frills and judgment.
