I think it's safe to say that YouTube has been through a lot over the past couple years with the Adpocalypse, with Elsagate.
You know, the Adpocalypse is basically advertisers pulling out, not wanting to spend money because it appears on certain videos, like extremist videos.
You had Elsagate, where there were depictions of children doing very disgusting things, and characters like Elsa from Frozen and Spider-Man and the Joker just doing all-out weird things.
To many people, it would seem like YouTube has been neglecting massive problems on their platform.
Let me just say, I love YouTube.
I think it's great.
It is a net positive across the board.
It allows people like me to do work and bring you videos like this.
But certainly, YouTube's priorities are all mixed up.
Because now we're hearing that once again, YouTube has another problem that targets children.
This time, YouTube has been delivering long conspiracy theory lectures on the YouTube Kids app.
Do you think reptiles are secretly running the government in the US?
I would have to disagree with you.
I think the world is round, I think we landed on the moon, and I don't think lizard people are real.
Certainly, I'm more than willing to hear you out, but I severely, I seriously doubt Almost every conspiracy theory.
Now, keep in mind, sometimes conspiracies are real, right?
We know that certain false flags have happened, say the Gulf of Tonkin incident.
So it's not to say that conspiracies are always outright lies, but look, if you're going to come to me and say that lizard people run the government, I'm going to give you a look.
That's a little crazy.
But if you tell me that the government is engaged in some kind of conspiracy, well then, I'll hear you out, because that happens all the time.
Whether or not your facts are correct, that's a different story, and I think any good journalist would be willing to hear out a conspiracy theory so long as it's based in reality.
I'm not saying journalists should dedicate a lot of time to it, but today's story has to do with YouTube.
And before I get into all of that, let me give a quick shout-out to today's sponsor.

The story from Business Insider, the YouTube kids app, has been suggesting a load of conspiracy videos to children.
YouTube's app specifically for children is meant to filter out adult content and provide a world of learning and fun.
But Business Insider found that YouTube Kids featured many conspiracy theory videos which make claims that the world is flat, that the moon landing was faked, and that the planet is ruled by reptile-human hybrids.
YouTube Kids is a separate app from the main YouTube app, and it's meant to allow parents to let their children browse YouTube without being worried about any unsuitable content appearing.
Children are encouraged to learn languages, read books, and watch educational videos.
YouTube has a lot of content.
A lot of it real, a lot of it fake.
Sometimes you'll see an animal doing something cute.
There's a video of some kittens bopping each other on the face and you'll laugh.
And sometimes you've got a guy giving a five-hour lecture on why reptiles actually run the planet, the moon landing was faked, and the pyramids were built by aliens.
Certainly, people have a right to believe what they want in this country.
And if YouTube is a platform for everybody, then they have to allow basically every idea.
The problem is, YouTube's kids app is supposed to be educational, family-friendly, but instead, what happens?
The algorithm, the mysterious YouTube algorithm that suggests content, is filtering conspiracy videos to children.
And these kids can't change the video.
Usually parents will turn a tablet on, place it in front of that kid, and that kid's gonna watch whatever's there.
So what do you think's gonna happen to that kid when they're watching hours of conspiracy content?
They're certainly going to grow up believing some pretty weird things.
YouTube issued a statement.
The YouTube Kids app is home to a wide variety of content that includes enriching and entertaining videos for families.
This content is screened using human-trained systems.
That being said, no system is perfect and sometimes we miss the mark.
When we do, we take immediate action to block the videos or, as necessary, channels from appearing on the app.
We will continue to work to improve the YouTube Kids app experience.
YouTube can't know a problem exists until someone brings it up.
So why is it that YouTube Kids seems to always have some kind of problem?
I shouldn't say always, but consistently there have been issues with weird, creepy videos making tons of money, parents abusing their children.
Or just creepy cartoons aimed at kids and now conspiracy theory videos.
And I mean like the craziest conspiracy theory videos.
And the reason is most people aren't paying attention to what kids are doing.
They're busy focusing on each other.
Why is it that political videos will get demonetized?
Political videos will get put into a limited state or restricted outright.
But videos about reptilians will be fed to children.
It's because YouTube can only respond to the PR.
Why is YouTube responding now?
Well, I'm sure YouTube is upset that conspiracy videos are being played for children.
I also think that their bigger concern is maintaining their PR, their image.
And so long as bad things happen, YouTube will react.
But if journalists aren't paying attention to what's really important, then YouTube can't really react because they don't know about it.
So what is YouTube's solution then?
Well, In a recent announcement, the CEO said that they are going to place Wikipedia articles next to controversial videos.
YouTube will use Wikipedia to help solve its conspiracy theory problem.
YouTube will flag conspiracy theory videos with additional information from Wikipedia in an effort to tackle the spread of disinformation on its platform.
The feature, which will launch in coming months, will at first focus on well-known conspiracy theories that have significant debate on YouTube.
For example, videos suggesting that NASA's moon landing was a hoax.
We will show as a companion unit, next to the video information from Wikipedia, showing information about the event.
It's had the company's CEO, Susan Wojcicki, on stage at the Film and Technology Festival South by Southwest.
Now let's talk about Wikipedia.
I've been very critical of Wikipedia, but hold on.
I really like Wikipedia.
They have a very low margin of error, but what happens on Wikipedia is heavily politicized.
There have been people arguing on my page for a long time.
I was looking at the page for Dave Rubin and saw people arguing and debating, but ultimately I think With vigilance, Wikipedia does do a good job.
And as a reference, let's actually look at how they refer to Dave Rubin.
David Joshua Rubin is an American classical liberal, political commentator, satirist, and talk show host.
He is the creator and host of political talk show The Rubin Report.
Rubin targets many topics including political correctness, free speech, politics, mass media, religion, foreign affairs, and what he considers to be the ideological split between liberalism and progressivism.
Now, A lot of people are concerned because they think Wikipedia is overtly partisan and favors one kind of ideology.
I actually think that Wikipedia appearing on YouTube is not a bad idea.
I think it's a pretty good idea.
I don't think Wikipedia is perfect.
I think we will see problems from this.
But YouTube having videos accompanied by Wikipedia is significantly better than having videos accompanied or policed by partisan non-profits and by outlets like Snopes.
The reason I want to bring up Dave Rubin here is because there's been controversy in articles about him calling him far-right or conservative, and there has been some debate and some attempts to edit his page on Wikipedia, but as you just saw, they correctly identify him as a classical liberal.
But what have people tried doing on his page?
In the talk section of his article, we can see this conversation.
Dear Anonymous IP, you keep reinserting an obscure article from Median By author, by a pseudonym, Huxley C., not known for anything.
If you want to source your claim about a certain criticism, you will have to find a source that has more weight.
Anybody can create an article on Medium, and one article doesn't signify it as has been criticized by the left.
For all I know, you could be Huxley C., and this could also be original research.
And the fact that I have the word freedom in my username doesn't violate any Wikipedia policy, neither does edit history.
And they responded, hello.
The weight of the evidence provided in the article are based on the examples given in the article, which are extensive.
Furthermore, the citation is merely citing a given criticism and is not claiming that said criticism is true, though the article makes a strong case for it as such.
And you can see once again, I have removed the content.
This is how Wikipedia works.
There's a discussion.
People will determine whether or not something fits or doesn't.
Sometimes the bad news gets through.
Sometimes fake news gets through.
But usually these conversations will be broken down and I think they tend to do a good job.
Let's look directly at what this person was trying to inject into the Dave Rubin article.
Not only does Wikipedia show you citations, which sometimes aren't perfect, right?
They use the SPLC, which has been wrong, and it is partisan.
But you can see here the changes someone tried to make and were removed.
They said Rubin has been criticized from the left for overwhelmingly focusing on criticizing the left while overlooking
egregious actions on the right while giving the right a platform to for their message and a link to a
medium.com article and you can see the final edit here gray fell
undid revision by this IP address See talk.
Source is not usable for this content.
Ultimately a fight ensued and they determined that they are not going to include a section saying that Dave has been criticized simply because some random user on Medium decided it was so.
Yes, YouTube has a conspiracy problem, but it's very difficult to solve.
We don't want to shut down videos because they hold beliefs we don't agree with.
As I've stated before, there may come a time when a factual story calls out a mainstream idea and is correct.
And it's happened to me.
I've had a video removed that called out the mainstream media for being incorrect when I was actually right.
They had to reinstate it.
And then there's the problem of trusted flaggers.
You have partisan outlets, non-profits, policing content.
It is much better that they put a Wikipedia article next to my video than take it down and punish my channel.
By all means, on any video I or anyone else ever makes, Wikipedia, great, do it.
Because at least Wikipedia can be debated.
And although Wikipedia may have partisan issues within it, At least there's an opportunity for debate within the community.
Not always.
Sometimes Wikipedia articles get locked.
Sometimes they can't be changed because a power user on Wikipedia has determined it as such.
And they have rules.
But I'll tell you what.
Sometimes videos get taken down because partisan trusted flaggers just decide that it's violating the rules and then YouTube takes it down.
And there's no opportunity to have a discussion about it.
Wikipedia is not bad.
Is it perfect?
No.
Will there be problems?
Absolutely.
But at least it's something and there is an opportunity for debate.
That's better than what we've seen in the past.
So, will YouTube have more problems targeting their kids app?
As I mentioned earlier, journalists are going to keep writing about why they don't like a particular individual's politics, and then YouTube is going to have to respond by setting up some kind of system to restrict those politics because they want to save face, they want to make ad revenue, they need to make ad revenue, otherwise YouTube can't exist.
And no one's going to pay attention to what the kids are watching.
And that's why Elsagate happened.
That's why kids were watching creepy videos of Adolf Hitler dancing around with the Hulk and Spider-Man.
It's why they saw disgusting depictions of children urinating or doing other... I just don't even want to say how bad some of these videos were.
Maybe YouTube should get their priorities straight.
Maybe their priorities shouldn't be policing speech, or taking down, restricting, or limiting videos that have controversial ideas.
Maybe they should just start paying attention to what the kids are watching first, and then maybe stay out of the culture war.
Because certainly, some ideas that have been restricted on all sides should not have been.
There have been issues where LGBT videos, coming out videos, were restricted or silenced or deranked and things like that.
And there have been videos where fact-based news has been taken down.
And that's not cool.
YouTube, they're trying to figure it out.
I appreciate that they are, but I think their priorities are mixed up, and...
What can I say?
Perhaps this is all just frustration.
Perhaps YouTube is doing the best they can.
Perhaps we should all just be grateful that the platform does exist.
And even though I have complained about issues of censorship, and even though many people have been censored, it is still a massive net positive.
Let me make sure that is as clear as possible.
But let me know what you think about this.
I suppose what I'm trying to get across is that when we hear conspiracy videos are being fed to children, and then we hear that certain videos are being demonetized, deranked, or altogether censored, it's kind of frustrating.
How is it that a video about reptiles running the planet and building the pyramids is fine for children?
But a political commentary video will get deranked, and that's okay.
Certainly, the priorities need to be straightened out.
So again, comment below.
We'll keep the conversation going.
You're on YouTube right now, so you must like it, right?
So maybe we just want to make sure it stays good or gets better.
