The Golden One - Marcus Follin - Lords of the West - Edward Longshanks. Age of Empires 2 DE New DLC Aired: 2021-02-05 Duration: 22:02 === Books on the Wars of the Roses (05:49) === [00:00:00] Greetings, my esteemed Laddingtons. [00:00:03] Shout out to my man, Jean, for gifting me this fine game. [00:00:08] Very heartfelt and appreciated. [00:00:10] So, first and foremost, I have a question for all English guys and well, everyone who's interested in English history. [00:00:19] When you meditate and contemplate on the Wars of the Roses, which side are you on? [00:00:25] Are you on the Lancaster side or the York side? [00:00:29] Let me know in the comment section below. [00:00:32] It's of utmost importance that we discuss this interesting topic. [00:00:37] Now, I thought to before I begin to get into the actual gameplay, I would like to give a book recommendation, and that is Connie Gilden's series on the War of the Roses. [00:00:51] The Wars of the Roses. [00:00:54] Good stuff, I always recommend everything he writes. [00:00:57] I have read almost all of his books. [00:00:59] I have one book which I bought immediately upon seeing that it was released. [00:01:05] But I have saved it. [00:01:07] It's set in ancient Greece, so I can't read it now in winter. [00:01:10] I'm checking in from Jutenheim, glorious snow landscape, but I must wait until reading this book until Helios come back in force, so I can sit outside in the sun with a good cup of coffee and read that book. [00:01:26] So I'm savoring it. [00:01:28] I'm saving it for a good occasion. [00:01:30] Anyway, long story short, if you want a good series on that time, I can definitely recommend Connie Gilden. [00:01:38] Another good British author, Bernard Cornwell, recommend his work, his books before. [00:01:44] I'll do it again. [00:01:45] Now, of course, the Uthred series might be his most famous one, but he has also written about the Hundred Years War, similar to this time as well, so the late Middle Ages. [00:01:58] Now, why do I mention all of these things? [00:02:01] Now you wonder. [00:02:02] Yes, because Edward Longshanks, he's a bit before, so you see there in the description. [00:02:08] It's 1264 to 1307. [00:02:12] And also, last thing before I begin to get into this gameplay, I have a Silvius series recommendation. [00:02:20] It's based on books by Filippo Gregory. [00:02:23] It's called The White Princess and The White Queen. [00:02:27] Quite good, actually. [00:02:28] Available at HBO. [00:02:30] Obviously, not a service I recommend per se, but they had it there at least. [00:02:34] And worthwhile watching. [00:02:36] I can definitely recommend those two citizens. [00:02:40] The only thing I need to strongly object to was a sequence where they visit the Spanish court. [00:02:46] Now, of course, the Spanish court descended from Visigoths and the princess they are there to make a match for their son to marry the Spanish princess. [00:02:56] She erupts into a flamenco dance. [00:02:59] And I can assure you that no Spanish royalty would have erupted into a flamenco dance. [00:03:07] It was something that detracted quite a bit from the quality of the series. [00:03:11] It was not good in the list. [00:03:14] I am a great friend and admirer of Spanish history and culture, so I need to defend Spain's good name and say that royalty did absolutely not dance flamenco dances. [00:03:27] Anyway, that being said, the rest of the series is quite good. [00:03:30] The third season is an absolute catastrophe, but I won't blackpill you by talking more about that. [00:03:37] Anyway, this particular DLC, you have a new civilization, the Burgundians. [00:03:42] I won't get into the Grand Dukes now, maybe for a coming video. [00:03:48] Who knows? [00:03:49] Depending on how popular this one is. [00:03:52] Then you have the Hautevilles. [00:03:54] I don't know how you pronounce it. [00:03:56] To my great shame, I do not speak French. [00:03:59] Highly barbaric of me. [00:04:00] I must redeem myself by praying extra hard in the Temple of Iron. [00:04:06] I read German. [00:04:08] That was my language in school. [00:04:10] You could choose between a few different languages. [00:04:13] The most common ones were French, Spanish, and German. [00:04:17] Anyway, this might be an interesting topic for a podcast talking about the Normans. [00:04:24] So you see here, Robert de Hauteville left Normandy in 1047 with a small robber band. [00:04:31] Allow me to translate it. [00:04:34] He left Normandy with a heroic menerbund of glorious Schild brothers, and they sought to mog others. [00:04:44] That's the actual story. [00:04:46] But in all seriousness, though, the most famous Norman, of course, William the Conqueror, conquered Merry Old England in 1066. [00:04:56] But they were quite adventurous, these guys, Vikings, imbued with a high level of Thumos that made them conquer and explore. [00:05:06] I will talk about it in another video, in a podcast, going through the history of the Normans, we can derive inspiration from them. [00:05:15] So, anyway, that might also be for coming video if there is any interest in it. [00:05:20] Let's get into Edward Longshanks, and you probably recognize this name. [00:05:24] He's the villain in Braveheart when you see this time period from the perspective of the Scots. [00:05:32] He is the villain. [00:05:33] You can also read about many good books about Robert the Bruce as well. [00:05:39] You have a British author, Robin Young, female author, written great books on this time as well, from the perspective of Scots. === Talking About Normans (05:14) === [00:05:50] Can definitely recommend it. [00:05:52] Anyway, let's get into the campaign. [00:05:55] So, we have here Merry Old England, and we'll travel to Wales, Scotland, and to the Holy Land. [00:06:02] So, let's get into it. [00:06:03] Vain ambition. [00:06:05] Boom. [00:06:06] It is the curse of all royalty to be compared with their forebears. [00:06:12] My illustrious father built himself a kingdom in his youth. [00:06:16] Now I can barely hold onto it in mine. [00:06:20] I hear all of the nobility's whisperings at court. [00:06:24] They say that I may be king of England by birth, but I will never be so by merit. [00:06:30] That I, Edward II, am unworthy of my father's name. [00:06:36] How much longer until these whispers become cries of rebellion? [00:06:41] My heart quivers when I visit his tomb in the abbey. [00:06:46] I am racked by fear. [00:06:49] It claws at my soul like the talons of demons. [00:06:54] Fear that I will prove them right. [00:06:57] That I will disgrace this family's legacy as my grandfather did. [00:07:02] Yet I must not give in. [00:07:05] I will study my father's reign and hope that it will imbue me with his strength. [00:07:11] The fortitude that I so lack. [00:07:14] My father, Edward, spent his youth watching in disgust as his ineffectual father Henry drove England to the brink of ruin. [00:07:23] When his subjects could bear his ruinous reign no more, a rebellion led by the Baron Simone de Moanfall deposed Henry, leaving his kingdom in tatters. [00:07:34] After the disastrous Battle of Lewis, the baronial forces captured and jailed my father and grandfather in Hereford. [00:07:42] Some kings begin their rise to the throne from within the palace. [00:07:46] Edward began his from the anguish of imprisonment. [00:07:52] Yet even when the future seems bleak, fate occasionally extends its hand and offers allies from the most unlikely of places. [00:08:04] Alright, as always in Age of Empires, epic and atmospheric introductions. [00:08:12] So now we're in the game. [00:08:13] Edward Longshanks must revive and Gilbert de Claire must revive. [00:08:18] Again, excuse my French if I mispronounce it. [00:08:24] I hope I pronounce it correctly. [00:08:26] My man, the extremely aesthetic Guillam, can tell me how my French pronunciation is. [00:08:32] Anyway, let's get into it. [00:08:40] Let us do so. [00:08:42] Edward Longshanks. [00:08:43] And a note here, this aesthetics, these three golden English lions, Norman lions, absolute aesthetic. [00:08:51] I need to make some sort of Legio Gloria garments. [00:08:58] On a similar note, do let me know also in the comment section who your favorite English king might be. [00:09:06] Who's the most interesting or inspiring or whatever. [00:09:09] I always read the comments in Let's Play videos. [00:09:15] We must mog these new males. [00:09:21] Aha, they were quite many. [00:09:28] I need to run around with them a bit so they can mog these guys. [00:09:35] I might also edit this video a little bit to make it more exciting, I suppose. [00:09:46] These guys, they want to question the validity of my claim to the English throne, is what Edward says here. [00:09:58] The reason I am more responsive on Let's Play videos is that the overall amount of comments much less so I can have the opportunity to respond to more of them. [00:10:10] Otherwise I usually feel quite bad if I only respond to some comments. [00:10:16] And of course, on GabMind's Patreon Subscribestar, I'm always very responsive. [00:10:34] This might be the thumbnail for the video. [00:10:37] this aesthetics the the red and then golden lions on it absolutely absolutely aesthetically pleasing aha we have some other blasphemous enemies here We need to avoid them. [00:10:58] If we can. [00:10:59] I'm not sure we can actually. [00:11:02] Aha, one sauce. === Welsh Army Prepares (10:22) === [00:11:05] Alright, turn around, lads, and illuminate this busted. [00:11:13] Also, note on the music. [00:11:15] It's very literally speaking music to my ears. [00:11:21] Since I grew up with this soundtrack, said Age of Empires. [00:11:24] I've said it before. [00:11:25] I said it before, I'll say it again. [00:11:27] Age of Empires, both Age of Empires 2 and Age of Mythology are sacred to me. [00:11:34] I am extremely thankful for growing up with them. [00:11:37] Extremely thankful for the interest in history they supplied me with. [00:11:43] And yeah, sacred games, I'm sure many of you feel the same way if you've grown up with it. [00:11:50] Good times, good times. [00:11:52] We need to fight these guys as well. [00:11:57] Out on thin ice here, we can't lose this guy, because then we lose the campaign. [00:12:04] He needs to survive. [00:12:08] He needs to survive the jive. [00:12:12] A great channel, which I'm sure you're all fully familiar with. [00:12:18] If you're not, search for it and enlighten yourself about pagan history and other good stuff. [00:12:31] Good stuff, good stuff. [00:12:33] So now I will do a little edit here, and I will build up and I will get right back when I have progressed further in the campaign. [00:12:44] So be right back. [00:12:46] Alright, so I am back. [00:12:48] I did a little edit there, as you noticed, and I decided to do a little boom with my little village here. [00:12:58] So I built an additional town center there and one here. [00:13:02] And now I'm gathering some stone to build a castle. [00:13:08] Since the forces are coming quite soon. [00:13:12] So I'll place the castle there, I suppose. [00:13:15] And I don't even know if we have enough time to build it. [00:13:20] I suppose not. [00:13:21] Oh, well, I have created a little army that will withstand the onslaught of the baronial forces. [00:13:31] So we'll see what is going on now. [00:13:36] Let's see, I need to gather some more wood. [00:14:00] We must strike quickly to bring our rivals back into the fold and even the odds. [00:14:07] That is noted. [00:14:09] So they didn't actually come to attack us. [00:14:12] They expect us to go to them to mog them. [00:14:17] That is fine. [00:14:18] I suppose that's what we'll have to do. [00:14:21] Here is my favorite unique unit, by the way. [00:14:25] The English Longbowman. [00:14:28] Highly joyous to create them. [00:14:35] Anyway, I will attack someone, I suppose. [00:14:39] The Welsh, perhaps. [00:14:40] They need to be subjugated. [00:14:45] And we'll see what happens after that. [00:14:50] We have reached the Welsh. [00:14:53] They're not prepared to face our army. [00:14:59] Or maybe they are, actually. [00:15:02] And I need to make sure that Edward doesn't die here. [00:15:06] That would be a bit silly if he does. [00:15:09] Maybe I should actually have brought some knights or something. [00:15:12] Can go back and create some and send them up. [00:15:18] otherwise we might have a hard time taking down all of their their buildings here another edit as you might have noticed So I subjugated the Welsh. [00:15:35] They are now on our side. [00:15:37] And now I am putting on some pressure on this Kenilworth. [00:15:43] And they're being protected by the baronial forces in Simon the Younger. [00:15:49] So we need to kill this guy and hopefully get this city citadel city over to us. [00:16:06] now we are less than three minutes until the baronial forces attack us and we're gonna see if we can actually conquer this city in that time I suppose that will reduce the amount of enemies that will come at us. [00:16:25] We'll see how that goes. [00:16:27] I have a battering ram in addition to my army here of crossbowmen and longbowmen. [00:16:35] So the gate is down. [00:16:37] Can we make it in time? [00:16:39] I don't really suppose we can. [00:16:43] But we'll see. [00:16:45] We can at least destroy part of their town. [00:16:50] Maybe I shouldn't have left the home base unprotected in case they attack. [00:16:56] But it's a gamble. [00:16:57] We'll see how it turns out. [00:17:07] We have a unit. [00:17:09] Sershunt. [00:17:10] I haven't seen before. [00:17:12] Looking quite aesthetic. [00:17:22] Okay, his knights are coming. [00:17:27] And we were just a bit too late to destroy this city. [00:17:33] Anyway, let's look over our defenses. [00:17:35] We are at a population limit here, so we can't really create more soldiers. [00:17:40] But if we can, we can train some knights and stuff. [00:17:48] I don't really see where this Laddington might be, though. [00:17:53] Maybe he comes with a surprise attack. [00:17:56] I will then counter with a surprise flex. [00:18:01] Hopefully that will get him to abandon his hostility towards us. [00:18:09] We'll see. [00:18:11] With their forces in disarray, the rest will be compelled to fall before me and beg for mercy. [00:18:19] Okay, so that was it. [00:18:21] We just had to subdue them. [00:18:23] I'll press continue. [00:18:26] Like his Norman ancestors, Gilbert de Claire was a shrewd opportunist. [00:18:32] Initially, a commander in the rebel army, he keenly sensed its divisions and saw that he could further his own ambitions by defecting to Edward. [00:18:42] My father moved with alarming speed. [00:18:46] Warchester and Glochester, Gilbert's family seat, were seized without delay. [00:18:51] After a string of further victories, he compelled the leaderless and battered rebel forces to capitulate. [00:18:58] Known by many as longshanks, Edward was feared for his imposing stature and foul temper. [00:19:07] While Henry was restored to the throne, all were well aware that Edward was now the true power behind it. [00:19:15] Good stuff, good stuff. [00:19:17] I thought about ending the episode there, but we're actually going to have a quick look at a man of God. [00:19:24] I think this is the only reasonable course of action. [00:19:28] So let's get into it. [00:19:31] Ruthless and cunning, Edward did not always adhere to the chivalric codes that the European nobility held so dear. [00:19:41] After massacring Simone the Younger's men in a stealthy night attack on Kenilworth, he used the captured banners to disguise his army before smashing Demonfour at Evesham. [00:19:54] In an act of alarming brutality, the corpse of Demonfour, an earl of England, was hacked into Carrion, his head mounted on a pike. [00:20:05] Edward had won the war and cowed the rebels into submission in just over a year, but the victory came at the cost of his honor. [00:20:14] Nobility and clergy alike cringed at the thought of an impious butcher one day ascending to the throne of England. [00:20:23] To restore his ailing reputation and prove himself worthy of the crown, my father resolved to lead a crusade east to the Holy Land, where the situation grew increasingly dire. [00:20:36] The voracious Mamluk Sultanate waged a fierce war of expansion, first against the Mongols and now against the beleaguered crusaders. [00:20:46] Several fortresses quickly fell before their unstoppable onslaught. [00:20:52] Their leader was Sultan Baibars, a man not unlike my father Edward. [00:20:58] Originally a slave of Kuman origin, he rose to prominence through military service and had recently taken power after murdering the reigning Sultan. [00:21:08] Having just slaughtered the population of Antioch, his armies now threatened Oka and Tripoli from the east, converging on both cities in a suffocating siege. [00:21:20] Edward's army arrived in Ocker to find the inhabitants desperate, but not beyond hope. === Sultan Baibars' Unstoppable Onslaught (00:34) === [00:21:27] You crusaders have solid our lands long enough. [00:21:31] We will drive you from your castles and into the sea. [00:21:36] Alright, I mainly just want to look at that intro. [00:21:40] We have a beautiful city here as well we need to defend, but I will actually leave it there for this time. [00:21:48] And I will see you all on Telegram, I suppose, if you're not already following me there. [00:21:55] Also, follow me on Gab and Minds. [00:21:59] So, now, thank you for watching. [00:22:01] Execzo.
