Welcome back to the historical battle section of Attila.
And today we're gonna embrace our barbarian mode.
That's why I'm having my beard still.
And we're gonna go with the glorious battle of Adrianople.
And when I shave, which I will do in maybe a week or two, by god, I will miss the beard though.
I will miss the beard indeed.
I like it.
But for the summer, I need a close.
A nice close shave.
But either way, I thought to game a bit as our illustrious barbarian forefathers, the Visigoths, in this episode.
And then when I shaved, I can be a Roman legionnaire again.
But then, as I said, like during the autumn, the beard will be back.
With all that said, let's get into the battle.
In AD 376, the Goths settled within the Empire on the approval of the Eastern Emperor of Valens.
After facing many hardships under dishonest Roman rule, the Goths felt that they had no choice but to revolt.
Two years later, Emperor Valens marched towards Adrianople in an attempt to subdue them.
Okay, a lot can be said about this very interesting story overall, I'd say.
we're gonna go with hard difficulty which is my standard in in these battles and as you can see they are outnumbering us initially at least And yeah, as I said, a lot can be said about this story in particular.
The Visigoths and the Goths are being pushed away by the Huns from their initial territories in the east and then also due to climate change.
Let's not forget the climate change forced them to migrate south to be able to sustain themselves.
The Emperor Valens is personally leading a Roman army towards Adrianople in an effort to crush the Goths.
Outnumbered, the Goths are encamped on top of a hill.
Despite marching all day, the Romans have numerical superiority and move to attack.
Yet unknown to the Romans, the Gothic cavalry is not far away.
Our true friends are coming to the rescue, in all actuality.
Alright, so the objective is quite clear.
Raise a cheer.
So what is going on right here, right now, is...
What the crack is, in all actuality, true friends, is the following.
I'm gonna hold this hilltop until the Romans I mean until our Gothic allies are coming our cavalry force are coming to the rescue.
So I'm just gonna play it very defensively.
Try to hold on to our little camp here.
And the Romans are advancing slowly.
Let's look at a general.
There they are.
Fucking juicy.

Okay, so.
We have some pikemen here going to defend this little skirmishers.
And I'm gonna put them in skirmish mode as well.
I mean loose spacing mode, of course.

And I actually thought about making a let's play campaign with either the Visigoths or the Ostrogoths just get that initial episode where I can talk a bit about the story of the Gothic people, etc.
And obviously it would be just you know fun for me to play.
But I suppose it's better that they do these one-off videos instead.
Our hidden units have been discovered where I come on and are they actually going in there?

And here we have the the story of the day.
Quothic barbarians against Romans warband okay there is the general cavalry

Based cavalry oh, and battle okay, if I wasn't that talkative during the end of the battle, I just I really wanted to uh, to win this.
So let's look a bit at the battle statistics at least.

So um, don't know how much you learned about history in this particular episode, but if you can talk a bit about um, about the um, the relation between the Gothic people and the uh, the Romans, I will probably talk a bit about this if I start a Gothic campaign, but if you look at the.
Obviously the Goths are from uh.
It's a Germanic tribe from Scandinavia, hence the name Gothic.
Uh, they wandered down from, from my beloved Sweden and Scandinavia, down here and uh, you know, raided the Roman Empire and settled um along the fertile coasts of the Black Sea.
But then the climate change came and the huns came, so they couldn't really stay here, which is why they pushed on down to uh into the Roman Empire and obviously, as with any, you know when, when two different peoples are in the same region, conflict will arise, as we saw here.
So yeah, that was the little history lesson.
