The Tucker Carlson Show - Maine Loggers Review the Cybertruck Aired: 2024-08-24 Duration: 14:34 === Meet The Irish Family (05:02) === [00:00:00] I don't think people understand just how much open space there is in northern New England. [00:00:04] Well, if you've got 1.5 million acres to mess around on. [00:00:08] So we called Elon, can we borrow a Cybertruck, bring it up to Maine for a month or two, do a kind of rural review? [00:00:14] And Elon said, okay. [00:00:15] We're just going 104. Probably a little too fast. [00:00:18] And give it to Patrick Feeney. [00:00:20] Long haul trucker, a carpenter, fixed diesel engines in the first Gulf War. [00:00:24] And just turn them loose with this thing. [00:00:25] We're going up to meet the Irish family. [00:00:29] It's a big logging company. [00:00:31] I'm a little embarrassed. [00:00:33] Oh, I live my life in my pickup. [00:00:35] Would you be nervous about taking something like this into the woods? [00:00:37] I don't know that yet. [00:00:38] Well, this is real. [00:00:40] Oh, it's done. [00:00:42] They're going to pull us out with a machine. [00:00:44] Yeah, I love it. [00:00:45] To let the record reflect that we are stuck momentarily, leaving us out, and then we'll hit it harder. [00:00:54] This is awesome. [00:00:56] All right, slow the fuck down a little bit. [00:01:03] Holy shit, Patrick. [00:01:05] Yeah. [00:01:07] So... [00:01:08] So the thing about the Cybertruck is, it's a truck. [00:01:12] It's not just a commute to Midtown vehicle. [00:01:15] The promise of the Cybertruck is that it could replace a pickup truck, a work vehicle. [00:01:20] So we're testing that. [00:01:22] We're now on the Maine-New Hampshire border and Western Maine, some of the steepest grades in the whole region. [00:01:31] And we're going up to meet the Irish family from Rumford, Maine, some big logging company in the area. [00:01:39] You hunt up here a lot. [00:01:43] And now it's raining. [00:01:45] How does this vehicle handle? [00:01:47] This thing handles great. [00:01:48] It's the best handling vehicle. [00:01:51] I've got a smoothest ride. [00:01:52] Yeah, but this is about as demanding a drive as you get on the East Coast of the United States, and it's handling really well. [00:02:01] We're going 63. We're just, okay, settle down. [00:02:05] I don't encourage passengers to go faster. [00:02:08] We're just going 104. I don't think of myself as a wuss. [00:02:11] Probably a little too fast in this weather, but the Cybertruck did it. [00:02:15] I gotta ask, are you embarrassed to drive this around? [00:02:21] Yes. [00:02:22] It's very embarrassing. [00:02:23] Is it really? [00:02:24] Well, not embarrassing. [00:02:25] Like, some people think it's cool, and sometimes, like, I don't want to see that guy. [00:02:28] All I have to do... [00:02:30] When somebody has that attitude, let them drive it. [00:02:33] And it's a total game changer. [00:02:34] It's unbelievable. [00:02:36] I've been to all 50 states and I can say this is one of the prettiest places in the world. [00:02:41] Oh! [00:02:42] Those guys are cutting wood. [00:02:43] Look at that. [00:02:43] Those are big trees. [00:02:46] Gentlemen! [00:02:48] I'm a little embarrassed. [00:02:49] Did you guys have truck envy at all? [00:02:51] Nice to meet you. [00:02:59] Daddy Sire. [00:03:00] Nice to meet you. [00:03:00] I see your name everywhere. [00:03:01] Nice to meet you. [00:03:04] Tell us the name of that machine that he's operating. [00:03:06] That's a forwarder. [00:03:07] Forwarder. [00:03:08] Forwarder. [00:03:08] Yep. [00:03:09] And he comes along and he picks up the different sorts. [00:03:12] And every pile you see here is a different sort of wood. [00:03:16] That's pulpwood for paper. [00:03:18] Pulpwood for paper. [00:03:21] Hardwood logs for all different, you know, furniture making. [00:03:26] I don't think people understand just how much open space there is in northern New England. [00:03:30] Well, if you've got 1.5 million acres to mess around on, what do you drive? [00:03:36] Drive this Ford Super Duty. [00:03:37] But I put a lot of miles a day on, so you've got to make sure that everything's reliable and going. [00:03:43] What do you look for in a truck, since it is the core of your life? [00:03:47] Room, for one thing. [00:03:48] Room. [00:03:49] Being able to tow stuff. [00:03:50] I've got fuel tank toolboxes. [00:03:54] I need something that's going to be able to tow heavy loads also. [00:03:57] Room, you got the double cab too. [00:03:59] The back seat is full of junk. [00:04:02] Is that a... [00:04:03] Yeah, you don't want to open the door. [00:04:05] It's full of junk. [00:04:06] I gotta look. [00:04:07] Oh, that's not bad. [00:04:09] Well, I live my life in my pickup, so... [00:04:12] Have you ever gotten this truck stuck? [00:04:14] Uh, yes. [00:04:16] Many times. [00:04:18] Okay, so that's your vehicle. [00:04:21] The Ford... [00:04:23] 250 XLT Super Duty, and this is something very different. [00:04:27] Oh, very different. [00:04:28] When you see this, what do you think? [00:04:30] Innovation. [00:04:31] Would you drive this? [00:04:34] Yeah, if it came into a price point that a guy can make it worth. [00:04:38] My biggest thing would be battery life. [00:04:40] Yep. [00:04:41] Because yesterday I put just under 400 miles on my pickup. [00:04:44] Today I'm at like 280. So... [00:04:48] How? [00:04:50] We got jobs in a lot of different locations, parts runs. [00:04:54] Yeah. [00:04:55] You put 400 miles on a truck in one day? [00:04:57] Yeah. [00:04:58] So would you be nervous about taking something like this into the woods? === 400 Miles On A Truck (07:13) === [00:05:02] I don't know that yet. [00:05:04] Like you roll up in this thing, what's the reception like? [00:05:07] There'd probably be some goofing because of the looks, but I don't know. [00:05:12] I think if somebody looked it over and see some of the innovation in it. [00:05:18] But Maine is still a hard place for EV vehicles, for people to get used to that. [00:05:23] Yeah. [00:05:24] What road are we going? [00:05:24] No, we're going to go right there first. [00:05:26] We're going to go see if we can make it into Charlie. [00:05:31] They probably ought to have these on. [00:05:33] Hey, I don't think it runs without them. [00:05:34] Oh, okay. [00:05:37] Right, that's what I think. [00:05:38] It won't go 114 without the seatbelt. [00:05:40] It'll only go 105. All right. [00:05:44] Might want to get around. [00:05:45] I've never done mud with this, so this is actually a first test, Tucker. [00:05:48] We have enough machinery to pull it out, I see. [00:05:52] Yeah, we do. [00:05:54] Let's try it and see what it does. [00:05:57] You might want to give us some when you get in this. [00:06:01] Oh, yeah. [00:06:03] Oh, man. [00:06:04] I thought we were going to get stuck for sure. [00:06:05] Well, that was nothing. [00:06:07] That was nothing at all. [00:06:08] I'm telling you, this thing's a... [00:06:09] What a beast. [00:06:10] I'm impressed. [00:06:11] And this is the Snow Machine Trail. [00:06:13] We made it. [00:06:24] You think of that, Charles? [00:06:26] Take mine out there. [00:06:28] Yeah? [00:06:29] Take mine out there. [00:06:30] That's pretty impressive. [00:06:31] It's funny. [00:06:32] Everyone thinks of Maine as just like pine trees. [00:06:34] This is what Maine actually looks like. [00:06:36] This is what Maine looks like. [00:06:36] It's swampy. [00:06:37] It's wet. [00:06:39] You know what I mean? [00:06:39] It's a mix of everything. [00:06:40] Yes. [00:06:41] Can you tell us, for those who aren't familiar with the processor, that's a feller buncher that cuts down the trees and stacks them. [00:06:46] Yeah. [00:06:46] The processor does what? [00:06:47] The processor will take, he's going to deal in these bundles right here as they sit. [00:06:52] Yep. [00:06:53] And they're going to take, he's then going to decide if it's a piece of pulp, if it's a piece of logs, what it is, and he's going to cut it into. [00:07:00] Pulp goes to the paper mill, logs go to the sawmill. [00:07:02] Yep. [00:07:03] This thing just rolled over yesterday? [00:07:06] On Monday. [00:07:07] Monday. [00:07:07] It's now Thursday. [00:07:09] And that's the man who survived. [00:07:12] Looking pretty happy. [00:07:15] But the machine doesn't look damaged from rolling around. [00:07:17] It doesn't hurt anything. [00:07:18] No. [00:07:19] It could hurt him, though. [00:07:20] It could hurt him. [00:07:21] Dude, where are you going on Sunday morning? [00:07:23] Do you know? [00:07:24] Sunday morning? [00:07:25] You're going to church. [00:07:27] To thank God for being alive. [00:07:29] Yeah. [00:07:30] What's the fuel burn on these things? [00:07:39] We run about 4,000 gallons a week, roughly between every day. [00:07:44] Can you imagine running all this on electric? [00:07:47] They're working on it. [00:07:49] I don't know how you do it, but huh? [00:07:52] Yeah, they got some hybrids. [00:07:54] That tree's no good, so it's going to go on pulp. [00:07:56] So he puts it over there in a different pile. [00:07:58] Tell me why that tree's no good. [00:07:59] It's dead. [00:08:00] Yeah. [00:08:01] They won't take a dead log. [00:08:03] So what direction do we think we want to... [00:08:05] I would be out of the right. [00:08:06] I yanked that tree out of the way a little bit. [00:08:09] But don't worry about... [00:08:10] There's a guy riding in the back. [00:08:12] Oh, this is real. [00:08:14] Uh-oh. [00:08:14] It's done. [00:08:16] It bursts them back out, maybe. [00:08:19] We're going to have to hit it harder, but he's riding in the back. [00:08:24] All right, so let the record reflect that we are stuck momentarily. [00:08:27] We're fiddling with the computer. [00:08:30] Well, I'm not. [00:08:31] Jason is, but anyway. [00:08:33] Now try back. [00:08:34] Let's try. [00:08:35] Let's try. [00:08:35] I wonder if sand would try anything. [00:08:38] Try next track, sand. [00:08:46] All right, we have... [00:08:47] Hold on. [00:08:48] Maybe that goes up really high. [00:08:49] We've discovered the limit of the Cybertruck. [00:08:52] Oh, we're going higher. [00:08:53] Yeah, it went higher on extract. [00:08:55] Let's try backwards. [00:08:56] I didn't hit it fast enough. [00:08:58] Ooh, you might make it down. [00:09:00] Well, that feels good. [00:09:02] Get it rocking back and forth if you can figure out how to do that. [00:09:04] I don't know if it will let me. [00:09:09] Well, it's a pretty good digging machine. [00:09:11] This is quite a test. [00:09:12] I mean, I don't know any pickup or jeep that would go through this. [00:09:15] See, now you're defending the Cybertruck again. [00:09:18] He has this love affair with this Cybertruck. [00:09:21] No matter how the Cybertruck fucks up, he's like, well, there's a good reason for that. [00:09:24] I'll take your truck through this. [00:09:26] See? [00:09:27] Now he's a Cybertruck. [00:09:30] Your truck couldn't do this. [00:09:31] Why isn't it? [00:09:32] I think we're just plain old-fashioned stuff. [00:09:34] I think we're going to have to hit it harder, but I don't want him in the back if we're going to hit it harder. [00:09:38] Yep. [00:09:39] Hey, Jake? [00:09:40] Yep? [00:09:40] You might want to get out because we're going to hit it hard. [00:09:43] Wow, we're going to get pulled out for us. [00:09:44] We're going to get pulled out for us. [00:09:45] We're going to get pulled out for us. [00:09:47] I'm glad we've reached the limit. [00:09:48] Now we know. [00:09:50] It's a little slime. [00:09:50] No, we're just slimy. [00:09:51] Just slimy tiles. [00:09:52] He get us out and then we'll hit it harder. [00:09:55] We probably won't make it through that. [00:10:00] This thing is cool. [00:10:01] Yeah. [00:10:02] You like it. [00:10:05] They're going to pull us out with a machine. [00:10:07] Yeah, I love it. [00:10:08] What machine? [00:10:10] The processor. [00:10:12] The processor is going to yaw us out. [00:10:14] I've become a failure! [00:10:20] It's so great. [00:10:24] I love it. [00:10:27] You ready? [00:10:28] Yep. [00:10:29] You want to back? [00:10:34] I'm going to get them all running start. [00:10:48] Yeah, because I don't know if it's going to let me go here. [00:10:52] There you go. [00:10:53] Oh, it won't. [00:11:00] I got it to the floor and it won't let me. [00:11:02] Just spinning. [00:11:03] Yeah. [00:11:05] That's no fun. [00:11:06] Did it die again? [00:11:07] No, it's just spinning. [00:11:09] It won't. [00:11:09] There's no traction. [00:11:11] No traction at all. [00:11:14] It doesn't like mud. [00:11:15] That's the tires. [00:11:20] Is this what you thought you'd be doing today? [00:11:21] No, it's so great! [00:11:23] I love it. [00:11:31] This is awesome. [00:11:44] So I think it's fair to say we've assembled a jury of men who operate large machines and have spent their lives doing so. [00:11:51] We've spent a lot of time in the Cybertruck, and now the verdict. [00:11:56] I was impressed by how it went. [00:11:59] As far as driving the woods roads themselves, it actually handles better than our trucks. [00:12:05] In the mud didn't do quite as well, but it was to be expected. [00:12:09] But overall, I was very impressed. [00:12:10] Would you buy one? [00:12:12] I think I'd buy it more as a toy than a work truck at this point. === Expected Local Laughingstock (02:18) === [00:12:15] 200 miles doesn't get you to work and back. [00:12:17] What did you think, Jason? [00:12:19] I love it. [00:12:21] I'm in the same boat as Dean's at. [00:12:25] I think that as a toy, it'd be awesome. [00:12:28] It'd be so much fun. [00:12:30] 200 to 300 miles doesn't get me around in a day. [00:12:32] So, Patrick, I doubt... [00:12:34] I doubt it's even worth asking the question because you're so deeply in love with the vehicle that I found you petting it the other day and you defend it against all criticism. [00:12:42] You make excuses for it. [00:12:44] It'll come home drunk and you'll just pretend it's not. [00:12:47] But what do you think? [00:12:49] But as far as driving it, it's just fun. [00:12:51] It's like hopping in your golf cart in Florida and pushing in the pedal and going. [00:12:55] It's that simple to drive. [00:12:56] I have a golf cart that I use every weekend at my campground. [00:12:59] I wish it had power like that. [00:13:02] I wish it could do that. [00:13:03] It's fun. [00:13:04] It's a fun vehicle. [00:13:05] I think if you were the carpenter that drove the $100,000 King Ranch Denali and liked that kind of thing, and you worked in town... [00:13:14] That would suffice you just fine. [00:13:15] You've got to plug it in at night. [00:13:16] You can easily drive 200 miles. [00:13:19] You could probably drive close to 300 miles if you didn't drive like an idiot like I do. [00:13:22] The only thing I don't know is I don't know how that handled the wintertime up here in Maine. [00:13:26] 30 below, I don't know what that would do. [00:13:29] But also, I don't know how my plow would fit on it. [00:13:31] Well, that's what he was saying. [00:13:33] The plow is essential for me. [00:13:34] I've got to have the plow. [00:13:35] Right. [00:13:35] So he's trying to convince Elon to let him keep it through the winter. [00:13:37] I want to rig up a plow on it somehow, have my welding guy fabricate some kind of plow. [00:13:41] It's got those tow hooks on the front. [00:13:42] We could probably rig something up. [00:13:46] So the Cybertruck's been here four weeks, and I'll just be totally blunt. [00:13:49] I expected it to become a local laughingstock. [00:13:52] I expected it to evoke hostility, if not violence. [00:13:55] From the local population. [00:13:57] And actually, everyone kind of likes the Cybertruck. [00:13:59] I'm not just saying that because Elon lent it to us for free. [00:14:01] That's for real. [00:14:02] Patrick has fallen head over heels with the machine in a way that's unnatural and creepy. [00:14:08] But everyone else likes it too. [00:14:09] Local kids like it. [00:14:11] And so we thought we had to bring it logging because this is, you know, a wood-based economy. [00:14:16] And the loggers liked it too. [00:14:18] So actually, the Cybertruck... [00:14:20] Like a lot of things in life, I started out wanting to hate it just on principle because it's electric and modern and it has weird lines and no continuous curves in it. [00:14:28] The whole thing was just offensive to my aesthetic sense. [00:14:31] But flying colors.
