=== Ultra-Orthodox Views on Israel (03:21) ===

[00:00:00]  Well, well, you know, there's an interesting, I mean, I think sometimes people kind of misunderstand the Orthodox or ultra-Orthodox position on Israel.
[00:00:09]  Yeah, they do.
[00:00:12]  You know, we're not supposed to go there until the third temple is rebuilt and, you know, Messiah is coming and all that.
[00:00:17]  They're working on that.
[00:00:18]  They're working on that.
[00:00:20]  But, and so it's almost sort of like a non-Zionism in a lot of communities, including in Israel.
[00:00:27]  Like in Israel, there are Haredi communities.
[00:00:30]  And in fact, you'd see it on the news all the time because there's a lot of a lot of non-Haredi Israelis really do not like them.
[00:00:41]  But there are these communities that kind of don't interact with the structures of the Israeli state.
[00:00:47]  And sometimes some of these people are like the settler types.
[00:00:51]  And then sometimes they're just essentially kind of just even more extreme versions in terms of insularity than any kind of Hasina that we have out here.
[00:01:03]  They don't go in the army.
[00:01:04]  They don't like contribute to whatever.
[00:01:05]  They take a lot of welfare.
[00:01:07]  Because the ultimate calling for somebody, the more Orthodox you are, is essentially you're supposed to just dedicate your life to the worship and study of God and or study religious texts and the worship of God.
[00:01:22]  And that can cause some problems in a secularized society.
[00:01:26]  And so there's this sort of, there's, you know, these bills that are, I don't know where they're at in the in the Knesset, but on the draft being extended to Haredi Jews.
[00:01:37]  And that is like a big, a big fissure.
[00:01:40]  And some, and some Orthodox Jews do go in the IDF.
[00:01:43]  And some orthodox, just like some Orthodox Jews in America, like do have, I mean, there's modern Orthodox here also, but like they're in everywhere.
[00:01:51]  But yeah, it's a, you see this sort of like modernity versus, I guess, conservative and religious adherence divide happen both in America and in Israel.
[00:02:04]  Yeah, because like, I mean, Israel is like, I mean, they're, they're obviously religious Zionists, but it is like a very like modern project.
[00:02:15]  It is, you know, forming a nation state.
[00:02:18]  It's based off these like ancient ideas, but then aren't all nation states kind of based off like ancient bullshit.
[00:02:25]  The, yeah, no, I was, there are a lot of, yeah, yeah, non-Zionist is, is probably the better way to say it, including when I was doing this research, I came across my favorite Israeli name, a non-Zionist activist who's named Halel Kook, which is just sort of very, I love, yeah.
[00:02:45]  He's like part of like the Stern gang and then fell out of favor.
[00:02:51]  But yeah, so they're they're non-Zionist.
[00:02:56]  Today, I found some stuff of like there are ultra-Orthodox in Lakewood that protest, that protest Israel.
[00:03:07]  I think there were a few videos of them like crashing a city council meeting.
[00:03:11]  But the prevailing attitude seems to be that, you know, for organizations like Ura, you know, it's a country where there are a lot of Jews.

[00:03:24]  Like, Ura, I was looking into it.
[00:03:27]  They send, I think, something like 16 million to, I was looking at their tax records, like to like Middle East and North Africa.
[00:03:36]  In 2023, they sent about 16 million there.
[00:03:39]  So they're obviously pretty involved.
[00:03:42]  They, I think we can, we'll maybe talk about it later, but like they, they've bought like property in Jerusalem.
[00:03:49]  They lost a lot of money on it in like 2010, which was, I couldn't, I couldn't confirm what part of Jerusalem, but you know, they're like they're they're obviously involved, even if they're not really as committed to it outright.
