Weekly Roundup: Mermaid Replacement Theory

Brad and Dan begin by discussing the proposed federal abortion ban rolled out by Sen. Lyndsey Graham. Brad puts it in the context of the Christian nationalist attempt to return the country to where it was in the 1950s - and to ensure that the rights gained by BIPOC Americans, women, LGBT folks, immigrants, and others are reset. Dan points out the strange timing of the rollout and asks why Graham did it now. They both agree that this is the beginning of a slow roll to banning abortion in almost any case federally. In the second segment they discuss the MAGA-ification of the GOP by examining primaries in New Hampshire and elsewhere. Where will the moderate Republican go? Finally, they discuss Ron DeSantis' stunt of flying migrants to Martha's Vineyard. Both of them ask if this is what a Christian leader does in 2022 and how it can be considered any form of helpful governance. They also discuss how Uncle Ron has infused Florida schools with conservative curricula from Hillsdale College, disproving the notion that the governor wants to rid the state's schools of ideology of any kind. https://www.tampabay.com/news/florida-politics/2022/07/01/conservative-hillsdale-college-is-helping-desantis-reshape-florida-education/ Subscribe for $5.99 a month to get bonus episodes, ad-free listening, access to the entire 500-episode archive, Discord access, and more: https://axismundi.supercast.com/ Order Brad's new book: https://www.amazon.com/Preparing-War-Extremist-Christian-Nationalism/dp/1506482163 To Donate: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/BradleyOnishi SWAJ Apparel is here! https://straight-white-american-jesus.creator-spring.com/listing/not-today-uncle-ron Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Straight White America Jesus.
My name is Brad Onishi, faculty at the University of San Francisco.
I show some partnership with the Kapp Center, UCSB, and I'm here today with my co-host.
I'm Dan Miller, professor of religion and social thought at Landmark College.
Nice to see you as always, Brad.
It looks like a new state.
Brad's like a migrant within his own home of like constantly like recording in different rooms.
So every week I see you, I feel like I'm getting a tour of like where you live.
Well, yeah, and I'm making you think that my home is bigger than it is by doing that.
So, you know, it's a real, it's a good trick.
We both live in palaces because of the millions and millions that we make from straight white American Jesus.
So don't, nobody be fooled by this.
As I'm recording, my computer may or may not be sitting on the dryer.
Who knows?
I'm not going to confirm or deny that.
All right, Dan, we need to just say something because we have big news.
Let's just not hide it.
We have a really big announcement.
We have a really big kind of thing we need to talk about.
And I already told our Swatch patrons, but now I'm going to tell everyone else.
We have our first live event and that is coming in November, Friday, November 18th.
We are going to be in Denver.
We're going to be at Denver University and we are holding an event called Christian Nationalism and the Future of Democracy.
November 18th is right after the midterms and so we're going to have a chance to discuss the midterms and Christian Nationalism and the future of democracy in the United States.
And Dan, we just happen to have some friends who are going to join us to talk about this.
So if you are wondering, it will not just be myself and Dan.
Sarah Mosliner will be there, a friend of the program and somebody who's on the program quite a bit.
But we're going to have Two different panels, and those panels are going to be comprised of some pretty illustrious people.
So, Phil Gorski and Sam Perry, authors of The Flag and the Cross.
Phil from Yale University, Sam from Oklahoma.
Catherine Stewart will be there, author of The Power Worshippers.
Dr. Larisha Hawkins, who's Assistant Professor of Politics and Religious Studies at the University of Virginia.
A man named Robert Jones, I don't know, some of you might have heard of him, the president of PRRI and the author of White Too Long.
Dr. Jacqueline Hidalgo from Williams, Dr. Kiyati Joshi, professor at the Farley Dickinson and author of White Christian Privilege, someone I've interviewed on this show.
So that's an amazing lineup.
Gorski, Perry, Stewart, Jones, Joshi, Hawkins, Hidalgo.
It's going to be pretty amazing.
We know that not all of you are Denver.
You're like, wow, this sounds so cool.
But I don't live in Denver.
I live far away from there.
You can definitely buy a virtual ticket and watch the live stream.
And that live stream will include the ability to chat and ask questions and raise your hand and all of that stuff.
We could not be more excited about this.
Dan and I have not done an in-person podcast episode in years, much less an event.
And now we get to host this incredible event at Denver University.
So Dan, I think this is pretty amazing.
I'm not going to lie, I can't wait to get to Denver and to talk to these folks, to break down what happens in the midterms, to see what they have to say to each other about Christian nationalism and the rise of extreme forms of conservative politics all over the country.
Are you as excited as I am?
I'm pretty pumped.
Yeah, I'm really excited.
I'll be hosting or sort of moderating one of the panels and just so folks know we're going to aim for this to be really to get all these people in one room, people that you've heard from on the podcast and about on the podcast and in interviews and maybe you've read their stuff or you've read their articles or You've seen them or heard them on NPR or places like that, and to be able to sit with them, and really we're going to try to stage this as kind of a conversation, right?
These people, they're like you and me, Brad, right?
They read each other a lot, they know each other a lot, but we don't all get a chance to just sit and talk much, and coming right after the midterms, we're really hoping to just kind of host a conversation about, you know, sort of where are things as they will be there in terms of like the Senate and the House and Christian nationalism, and where is this going, and we'll You say be past the midterms, which means looking to the next election.
So just really excited to sit with all of these folks and really excited for people who can be there to join us.
I think that'll be really, really cool.
And those who join us virtually as well.
So yeah, I'm really excited about it.
We've been working on this for a long time.
Brad has really been working on this and sort of tying all this together.
Sarah has been working with us.
So to finally be able to announce it is really exciting for us.
So I'm really stoked about Denver in November.
