Straight White American Jesus - The Orange Wave, Ep. 2: Every End is a Beginning Aired: 2022-05-10 Duration: 02:48 === Moving West (01:56) === [00:00:00] Axis Mundi In [00:00:33] In 1958, my grandfather told his family that they were moving to California. [00:00:38] He was a cotton farmer who had had his crops wiped out by flood enough times that he was willing to call it quits, head west, and try something new. [00:00:48] A short while later, they left Portageville, a farming town in the Boot Heel of Missouri, near the Tennessee border, to make the trek west. [00:00:57] My mom, who was 8 at the time, and her younger sister were scrunched in the back of the family station wagon, along with all their worldly belongings. [00:01:06] They left behind dozens of family members, and the only place any of them had ever known. [00:01:10] After an arduous journey, they settled in the San Gabriel Valley, east of Los Angeles. [00:01:17] Eventually mom moved to Orange County, where she met my dad. [00:01:20] When grandpa died, my grandmother relocated too. [00:01:23] By the time my brothers and I came along in the early 80s, Mom fit seamlessly into the Orange County landscape. [00:01:29] Blonde, blue eyes, and just a hint of a Southern drawl. [00:01:33] Southern California had become home, yet it wasn't because Mom and Grandma left the South behind. [00:01:38] It's because they, and many others, have brought it with them. [00:01:42] Welcome to The Orange Wave, a history of the religious right since 1960. === The Orange Wave Introduction (00:51) === [00:01:57] Hello!
