In the wake of news that Roe v. Wade will likely be overturned, Brad and Dan begin this episode with a history of how evangelicals have transformed on the issue of abortion. In the 1960s and 1970s many evangelical pastors, theologians, and politicians were in favor of abortion in many cases and without too many restrictions. This changed when political operatives began to use abortion as a wedge issue that could give them control of the GOP--and the country as a whole.
They then discuss what this looks like in states and communities across the country. There are already bills up for debate that would make abortion a homicide in Louisiana, and ideas to ban IUDs and other contraceptive methods in Idaho.
Will this have an effect on the 2022 midterms? Yes . . . and no.
They note that Roe could be codified as law if Dems would kill the filibuster and pass the bill that was already moved forward in the House. But . . . Manchin and Synema.
In the future, the overturning of Roe will only further the cultural divide. The cold civil war will ramp up, leading to two different lived experiences for Americans.

Welcome to Straight White American Jesus.
My name is Brad Onishi, faculty at the University of San Francisco.

Today I'm here with my co-host.
My name is Dan Miller.
I'm associate professor of religion and social thought at Landmark College.
It's good to see you, Brad, as always.
I know life is busy for you and me and everybody else, so it's good to see you and it's good to sort of virtually be with whoever is hearing this at the moment.
Well, and we're late this week.
We usually release on Friday.
It's going to be on Saturday today just because of some last-minute scheduling kind of emergencies.
So, appreciate everybody's patience waiting for this, and it's a week where I know a lot of folks are Just eager to kind of like gather with those that they can process with in terms of the news about Roe v. Wade and the leaked decision and the opinion written by Justice Alito.
So anyway, that's on our mind.
We're going to talk all about it today.
We're going to basically break it up into past, present, and future.
What's the past, what's the present, and what's the future as it regards Roe v. Wade and abortion in the United States.
Before we do that, Dan, we need to say that we have a great new series from you called It's in the Code, and that's on Wednesdays, and folks have been enjoying that.
I've been sending in stuff.
The last one was on Bible Church, which is really, really good.
And we also have a seminar coming up.
So it's coming up in just about a month.
It's on Christian Nationalism and Identity Politics, and one question I have gotten, Dan, is like a lot of folks listen to your Identity Politics series, and they might be wondering, you know, like, hey, I listened to this series.
Is there going to be anything new?
Is this any different?
So, you know, can you help us understand, like, what's a little bit fresh about the seminar?
Yeah, so two things.
One is, you know, the series, what is it?
It's 20 minutes each time, whatever, it's just me prattling on.
And if that's like the, I don't know, the JV level version of it, the sort of primer, this is a chance for anybody who wants to dig in more.
You used the metaphor a lot of having the receipts, right?
Somebody wants to say, cool, I thought some of the stuff you said in that series was really interesting, but prove it or show me or How do I talk to our proverbial Uncle Ron at the cookouts about how this is how identity actually works or whatever?
Getting to take a deeper dive in that, getting to interact more with that so the folks can actually ask those questions.
And then more than I did there, I think the other piece of it, the second piece is really relating it to Christian nationalism, right?
Some of the kind of the bread and butter of what you and I do.
And what we've done on this podcast and relating that to say, how does that relate to things like the stuff we're talking about today and the significance of some of the way that this abortion decision is being heralded and played out and described?
How do we think of that as an expression of identity politics?
And then, you know, if people really wanted to go in the weeds and draw connections between that and say the seminar I did last time, that was stuff on Christian nationalism, this idea of the social body.
This is yet sort of another approach of looking at it as identity politics.
So, I think it will be fresh.
I think it does give a little bit deeper dive.
I think people who might have listened to that series and You know, you want to email or you drop a line or you've got questions and, you know, you just, there's no time to deal with those.
It's the time to do that.
So, looking forward to it.
I think it will have something new for folks.
I also think people who didn't listen to that series are not going to be at some sort of a loss or disadvantage not doing it.
So, excited about it.
And of course, people can reach me, DanielMillerSwag at gmail.com.
Feel free to drop me a line if you've got questions or concerns about it or whatever.
I'd love to talk to folks.
