Weekly Round Up: Party of Lincoln and Election Fraud
Brad and Dan lay out the timeline and details of the fake electors the Trump campaign organized in order to overthrow the election. If you thought the details of Trump’s coup couldn’t get worse, wait until you hear the full scope of the plan to commit election fraud throughout the country in order to overturn the will of the people.
They then discuss a new article at Christianity Today that maintains God’s pronouns must be he/him. Dan draws on his training as a theologian and queer theory to disssect the argument’s misguided and disingenuous foundations.
The episode finishes with a discussion of the difference between feeling unsafe and uncomfortable a propos a new bill in Florida that would make it illegal for schools or workplaces to make people feel “uncomfortable” based on their racial identity. It is another ploy by Uncle Ron DeSantis to whitewash American history.

Welcome to Straight White American Jesus.
My name is Brad Onishi, faculty at the University of San Francisco.
Our show is hosted in partnership with the Kapp Center, UCSB, and I'm here today with my co-host.
My name is Dan Miller.
I'm associate professor of religion and social thought at Landmark College.
Good to see you, Brad, as always.
You too.
It's busy times for you, Dan.
You're, you're doing your series on Wednesdays.
Uh, you're not welcome here.
Uh, race, uh, religion, identity, and politics.
Excuse me.
And that's amazing.
Uh, folks, if you haven't listened to that yet, check it out.
And also finishing up, uh, the second iteration of our straight white American Jesus seminar, uh, uh, pure America, religion, race, nation.
So how's that going down?
Are you, you know, y'all having a good time in that seminar?
Yeah, I think the seminar has been great.
Really just same as last time and exactly what we'd expect.
Some really interesting and diverse people there having great discussions and diving deeper into the kinds of things we talk about all the time on the podcast, but just a chance to To spend more time on it, to take a deeper look.
People can, you know, sort of a plug for future seminars, whatever they are, right?
That people who want to dive deep and do all the readings and research a bunch of stuff and come there are welcome.
And people who just don't have time for that or that's not what they're into, who just want to come and be a part of the discussion for a couple hours, they're doing that as well.
And I think it's been really valuable, really enjoying it.
Looking forward to it, and I'll throw out there that you and I are always looking for ideas from people.
What do people want to talk about?
What do they want to think about as we continue to think about future iterations of this?
Where are people at?
What are things that we talk about that they want to dive into more deeply?
That's what it's for, and we love doing that.
Yeah, we're definitely trying to figure out next steps.
When is the next seminar going to be?
What's the topic going to be?
How's it going to look?
So friends, some of you have emailed us and asked about that and we've got it in the works and hopefully we'll be able to kind of share some more information in the coming months.
I want to just say one more thing, and that is we do have an editor now, and we're so grateful.
A bunch of folks reached out and offered their services and offered their experience to be our editor, and we've been talking with our editor for months, and we're finally able to kind of bring her on.
So Shannon Sassone is our new Straight White American Jesus editor.
We're so grateful for her.
Her work has been really great.
She's Sort of professional in ways that Dan and I are not when it comes to editing and her expertise and know-how and enthusiasm are just already making things better and easier.
And so Shannon, we're grateful to have you and just excited for you to be part of our team.
Okay, Dan, let's get moving.
I want to talk today about voting and electors.
Yeah, they're a big fake elector story out there.
I want to talk about God's pronouns, something I know that you have thought about a lot in the past and in the present.
And there's a new story at Christian Today and others pointing, excuse me, arguing against the idea that God's pronouns might be different than he him.
And so the pronoun discussion has reached the theological mainstream.
And then I want to talk about a Florida law that is trying to make it illegal for teachers and others to introduce ideas that make folks feel uncomfortable, especially white folks feel uncomfortable about the history of this country and the history of slavery and so on.
And I want to talk about the difference between discomfort in one sense and feeling unsafe in another.
And so we'll get there as we go.
Hey, Dan, let me read something to you.
All right, this is from the New York Times.
You ready?
The House passed the measure last week after a flurry of rebellion from several Southern lawmakers.
Republicans had made renewal of the law.
I just want to make this, I want to read that again.
Republicans Had made renewal of the law, the Voting Rights Act, a cornerstone of party efforts to reach out to minority groups, particularly blacks, and leaders of both parties promised its passage in a rare joint event on the steps of the Capitol this year.
Despite the progress these states have made in upholding the right to vote, it is clear the problem still exists, said Senator fill in the blank, Democrat from fill in the blank.
So Dan, When do we think this is from?
I'm sure you know because you're Dan Miller, but you know, this sounds like it's alternative history.
It sounds like I'm reading fiction.
It sounds like I'm reading some sort of weird Democratic fetish, voting rights, you know, adult graphic novel or something.
You know, where do you think this is from or what do you want to say about it?
Figure out right.
But as you say, it sounds like it's alternative history.
I'm just going to throw this out and you can give the specific historicals and the fill in the blanks and all of that.
But people, we talked about this before when Republicans like to say, we're the party of Lincoln, we're the party of civil rights.
This is from that era of GOP life when they were champions of civil rights, when things like the Civil Rights Act were passed and all of that.
And you had Democrats who had largely had influence in the South and they were the ones that opposed these things and so forth.
This is from that time and for people who listen to this as you as you do like sort of putting it forward and take out the names and take out the the places that they're from and just keep the party affiliations and it it sounds completely backwards because as we've talked about lots of times the script completely flipped in the 60s 70s through the 80s To where it is now where the Democrats are the ones taking these positions.
The GOP is staunchly opposed to it, but for all of those who want to say that American conservatism has always been fill-in-the-blank, this is one of those things that disrupts it.
So, we're not talking about President Biden in support of it, and we're not talking about, you know, Senator Mitch McConnell in opposition to it.
We're talking about a really different time, and it really makes the case for how much these political identities have shifted over time.
So go ahead and fill in the blanks for us.
