For our last ex-evangelical apologetics installment, I want to talk about vaccines and vaccine mandates.
Some of you might have seen that Jim Jordan said that vaccine mandates are un-American.
There's pastors and columnists and pundits who are all up in arms about vaccines and them being mandatory for work and for other things.
There's a lot of folks who are talking about how when vaccines are available to children at certain ages that mandating vaccines for children to attend school is infringing on their rights and is un-American and so on and so forth.
So I want to address some of that.
I want to do so in a way that, um, uh, addresses the concerns about our American ethos, but also coming from, uh, the evangelical perspective that Uncle Ron, uh, will no doubt be touting, uh, at the barbecue or at dinner.
Uncle Ron might be.
From another tradition might be, you know, conservative Catholic or LDS or something else.
So, you know, there's a number of ways Uncle Ron can show up, but I think what I'm going to do today applies to all of those.
So, let's talk about vaccines.
Let's talk about isolation.
Let's talk about cleanliness, that kind of stuff.
So some of you might have seen some posts going around about Leviticus 13, and in Leviticus 13 there are very detailed rules and regulations about, you know, what happens if somebody is ceremonially unclean.
This is the Law of Moses, where Moses, you know, really relays All of the ways that one can be unclean in the eyes of God.
And one of those is if somebody has, you know, what some translations call a defiling disease.
And if they do, they must, among other things, cover the lower part of their face and cry out, unclean and unclean, and let everybody know that they have a disease and that they might be infectious.
This is Leviticus 13 45, okay?
So, that comes in within the context of ritual purity in the Hebrew Bible and Israelites and their sacrifices to Yahweh.
But we see here in the Bible that there are precedents for people wearing masks and people separating themselves from the group if they feel as if, not feel, if they are shown to have an infectious disease or affliction.
Now, Uncle Ron might say, well, that's fine, but you know, we live in the age of the New Testament, so sorry, that doesn't apply anymore.
And I guess my response would be, okay, well, Uncle Ron, you're the one who's always telling me about Romans 13 and obeying the authorities, and always talking about, render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's.
Well, if I live in a country, Where, in order to attend school, they're asking me to get a vaccine.
Why would I not understand that as part of my rendering to Caesar what is Caesar's?
There doesn't seem to be any direct Christian opposition, right?
I don't see anything in the Gospel of Jesus Christ that says getting a vaccine is somehow going to usurp God's So, you know, you're always talking about, you know, obeying the authorities and giving to Caesar what is Caesar's.
to be good and righteous and moral.
So, you know, you're always talking about, you know, obeying the authorities and giving to Caesar what is Caesar's.
This seems to be one of those cases.
