Time Text
Axis Mundy Okay, welcome to Straight White American Jesus.
My name is Brad Onishi.
I am Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Skidmore College, and I'm joined today, as always, or as usual, I guess, by my co-host, who I'll throw it over to in a minute, but we are excited.
We have some new stuff happening, obviously, and he'll talk about that, and not only will he talk about what's happening with the pod, but I know he's gonna be sort of in a good mood because it is Friday and going into the weekend we have a whole slate of NFL football and there will be no Patriots.
So Dan, how are you?
Yeah, so to introduce myself, I am Dan Miller, Associate Professor of Religion and Social Thought at Landmark College.
Some people may be, excuse me, may be listening to this.
We're posting it in audio as we do, but this is also our inaugural video session as well, so people can check that out.
I would say there'd be a debate about who's the more handsome between Bradley Onishi and I, but I think I'm doomed to lose that one.
Well, we're not standing up, so you know, if we stood up, everyone would see how short I am, so there's that.
There's something there.
I might or might not be wearing pajama pants right now, so you know, it's whatever.
So you don't even want to comment on the fact that you live in the heart of Patriots country in New England and you absolutely detest the Patriots.
There are people turning off this podcast right now because I'm mentioning that and yet, you know, you couldn't be happier.
You don't even want to talk about that?
So I, you're right, I do detest the Patriots.
I live in the heart of Patriot land and as you can attest, anybody, I don't know if anybody has found me on Facebook, I am the consummate kind of trolling anti-Patriot ale when they lose.
I like post comments.
I've spent literally all week listening to New England like sports radio stations and people calling in and speculating about Brady.
So no, it's, Yeah, when they lost, I immediately stayed up past midnight my time just to watch the Patriots postgame thing.
People in stunned shock because it was the first time in nine years or something that they're not in the divisional round.
Anyway, that's me.
For everybody to know, I'm not nice.
You know, Schadenfreude is fine in sports.
It's acceptable.
Now that we've alienated all of our listeners in New England.
Alright, so this is our, as you said, this is our inaugural video version of our podcast.
People are seeing us for the first time and so one of the things we wanted to do was add sort of some segments to our show as we do this each week.
And right now our first segment is called, Did You See That?
And we want to kind of point out some stories you might have missed.
These are in some senses obscure, in some senses really Disheartening in other ways just something that we maybe should know about and and like maybe miss just because we're busy and we got other stuff going So Dan, I'm gonna throw it to you.
What is your did you see that for the week?
Yeah, I was thinking Speaking of potentially alienating people you could just call it the like what's he at the WTF section, right?
Yep, because they are there these things that we see that sometimes they would be Crazy or funny, if they weren't so sort of terrifying.
I know you've talked about some other things and other contexts that I was thinking, but for me it's Jim Baker, right?
A famous, you know, televangelist fame, coming out and saying recently that support for Donald Trump is a sign of Christian salvation.
Once upon a time, I might have naively thought that, you know, evangelicals thought to be a Christian you believe in Jesus and stuff.
But apparently, like, what do we know, right?
It's all about support for Trump.
No, I mean, seriously, right?
This fits like what they've been saying.
And I think you said something like that only only saved people could support Trump.
And so you have this again, this in the The ongoing wake of the Christianity Today editorial and concerns that maybe we'll come back to, you know, in some of the Trump camp, that there may be some fracturing of their evangelical support.
You have, like, an old-school evangelical spokesperson who, to be fair, got a lot of backlash for this statement.
But that was mine.
I saw that.
I was like, God!
Again, like, it would be crazy if there weren't so many Christians who believe it.
