Axis Mundi Hello, and welcome to Straight White American Jesus.
As always, I am one of your hosts, Dan Miller.
I am Associate Professor of Religion and Social Thought at Landmark College, and I am joined by my co-host... I'm Brad Onishi, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Skidmore College.
Very cool.
And so what we wanted to do, it's been a while since Season 1 ended.
We've been hard at work putting together episodes for Season 2, and we wanted to just take a few minutes and let people know some things about where we're headed this season, what we've been up to in the interim, and things that they can look forward to.
And so, let me start with Brad, because Brad, I feel like what you're doing sounds way more exciting than what I'm doing.
You are, let me ask this, where are you this season as we record?
Yeah, so I'm in California, my home state.
I am incredibly lucky to have a sabbatical for the 2019-2020 school year.
So I'm out here in California.
I'm going to be a visiting scholar at the Graduate Theological Union.
I'm going to be also doing some stuff down at my alma mater, the University of California, Santa Barbara.
And two really important things I'll be doing.
I'm actually writing a book on the history of the soulmate myth, which if you know me, you know I've been sort of talking about for years.
And so, you know, you can look out for that hopefully in the future.
You know, no details yet, but things are in the works.
So it's kind of a book about the history of love and how we got this idea of the soulmate.
The second important thing I'm doing is eating a lot of In-N-Out and tacos.
And if people are, you know, don't already feel enticed for the episode, they should know that In-N-Out Burger figures in a couple of our episodes this season.
I can't really eat in upstate New York.
So that's what I'm doing, Dan.
Yeah.
And if people are, you know, don't already feel enticed for the episode, they should know the In-N-Out Burger figures in a couple of our episodes this season.
So that's a teaser.
You know, there was no other reason to listen.
I, on the other hand, am not on sabbatical.
So I am here in southern Vermont.
That's where I teach.
As we record this, we're getting ready to start the new academic year coming out of the summer.
I did a lot of things this summer, including going to my first monster truck rally with my son, so that was kind of different.
On a professional note, I have a sabbatical coming up and am currently working on trying to finish my second book, which is on political theory and the concept of the social body or the body politic and what it means to think about society that way.
Trying to weave together a lot of things on nationalism and sort of critiques of identity politics with this concept of the body politic as informed by some queer and trans readings of the body.
And this is kind of a weird project, but it's coming together and I'm hoping to finish that up in the spring.
So aside from recording the podcast, those are some of the things that we've been working on.
Yeah, go ahead.
Let me just jump in, Danica.
I mean, I want to just clear something up.
I mean, you made the monster truck rally sound like an aberration, but I mean, I think our listeners should know you had an incredible time.
Am I right about that?
It was.
It was a great time.
And I'm really glad that I was a responsible parent and remembered ear protection.
Having never been to a monster truck rally, it sort of clued into the clueless academic that they're probably loud.
And they're really loud, as everybody probably knows.
No, it was really cool.
My son is five, and so he, yeah, he had a great time.
My other child, my daughter, was off at her first sleepaway camp.
That's why she didn't get to go.
And so, yeah, it was just a cool time to hang out and a cool break from some of the, you know, more geeky academic stuff and house projects, which I was also spending my summer doing.
So, yeah.
Nice.
Yeah.
Nice.
So we wanted to say a word or two about kind of where we were at last season, what we're going into this season.
So Brad, if you want to sort of start with that in your perspective, just let people know what was our kind of aim last season, our approach, and how do you see this season being sort of different and building off of what we were doing last year?
