Time Text
We know we're under attack!
We're in the way!
We're talking to the conditioning!
Jakari Jackson reporting from Charleston, South Carolina.
Now, in a moment, we're going to go down to the street.
It's going to be more of a tourist-type area, and we want to find out what people think about the Confederate flag and also if they think they have any solutions to the violence that happened here.
It's not about guns.
It's about what this guy thought and where was his thinking coming from because he clearly felt he was alienated from society.
He's not crazy.
If you look at his blog, you know.
I mean, within the racist logic, there's a logic to what he was thinking.
But it has to do with, I'm better than you, I'm superior to you, and you are doing things to, you know, African Americans are doing things.
I mean, you're raping our women and taking over the country.
But that's on the surface.
But putting him in jail is not going to deal with it.
Gun laws are not going to deal with it.
I mean, what if he went in there with a can of gas and leaned in a bunch of matches?
What are we going to do?
Have more strict rules on who gets to have matches and buys gasoline?
No.
We have to deal with the real issues of social inequality, social injustice, which is economic in this country.
And that's what people in the Democratic Party don't want to talk about.
People in the Republican Party don't want to talk about.
The only person I know...
I mean, one of the reasons we were coming down, we were going to go to Bernie Sanders rally because I'm a supporter of him.
And this is just my personal guy.
It has nothing to do with what I do professionally because he's the only person I think who's taking seriously the root causes, the systematic involvement of racial injustice with capitalism and the the systematic involvement of racial injustice with capitalism and the wealth of this country.
I mean, that's really what it comes down to.
And nobody wants to talk about it.
Now, another hot topic that's going on right now is the one about the Confederate flag.
You know, what is your thoughts on the Confederate flag?
Should they take it down?
Should it stay up?
What is your thoughts?
I think they need to at least move it.
It belongs in a museum.
It's a very, as Lindsey Graham, and I've talked to Lindsey Graham a couple of times because I'm an old biker, and I used to lobby for biker rights when he was in the state.
I saw him one time in his office.
They don't need to fly the battle flag.
I've had southern friends, because I'm not from South Carolina, who had ancestors who fought with the Confederacy, who said to me, we let them steal it.
He meant the Klan.
Steal that as a symbol.
Well, there are other flags you can fly.
Flags of the Confederacy that don't set off any bells if you're concerned about historical, you know, the heritage and all that stuff.
Heritage, not hate.
But, I mean, when you saw that picture of Roof, the terrorist, let's call him what he really was.
This is domestic terrorism that the government is doing nothing about.
Then there's a picture you probably saw in his blog post.
He's got a Confederate flag.
I mean, this has just become inextricably identified with making a racial statement.
And so if somebody wants to ride on their motorcycle or do everything and fly the flag in front of their house, that's their business.
But it shouldn't have any connection with anything associated with the government, except in a museum.
Because then you've got the context.
I haven't seen any racial situation in Charleston.
I really haven't.
I'm always suspicious with these things that happen.
I don't know how they occur and why they're occurring the last few years.
Always prompting the government to do more on so-called our behalf, taking away more of our liberties.
TSA, for instance, NDAA, Patriot Act.
I think it's just something, it's a precursor, it's a catalyst, you know, like the 9-11.
It's a huge catalyst for everything that's happened so far, and I think we're in for an economic downfall soon, and be prepared, stock up with yourself, and make sure you have the right to bear arms, make sure you know what you have, make sure you have your own monetary value and food.
You know, that's about it.
To me, the Confederate flag, I mean, I think that people have a right to...
It depends on what's behind the Confederate flag.
If you think it's because you have, you know, it's a racist issue, then that's it.
But I think for a lot of people, the Confederate flag is more of the cultural, the way of living that it used to be and it got burnt down, you know.
I don't think that...
I think that...
People use that as a way of saying, oh yes, we're anti-race, but the Confederate flag really means a lot more to a lot more people.
There's just much more into the Confederate flag than meets the eye.
It's the times we live in, we've got to expect people who are, I don't want to say mentally ill, but it kind of seems like it.
People who have been doing this are kind of just messed up in their head, and taking away my gun rights is not one of the solutions.
So, I really don't know, honestly, how we can go about this, but something needs to be done.
And finally, sir, thoughts about the Confederate flag.
There's been a lot of controversy about it still flying.
What are your thoughts?
It is an old...
It's an old thing.
It's been around for, you know, a long time.
Taking it down, I don't think that's the right thing to do.
I think it's part of history as well.
It's kind of like saying...
You know, anything's up for grabs to take down as far as the Declaration of Independence.
I mean, if people don't agree with that, are we going to take that down eventually too?
I mean, so taking down a flag that's been, you know, flying for however long, I think they should just leave it.
Your thoughts on the Confederate flag?
It should be taken down.
It just, it serves no good purpose.
I think it should come down.
