- Jakari Jackson reporting from Charleston, South Carolina, We're right outside the Emanuel AME Church.
Now, we've heard a lot about how people feel, but we want to hear from the people themselves.
There are people here from all...
Ages, races, people from all over the country, all over the world.
We've heard many people speak in many different languages.
I'll come out here to show their support.
So let's walk around and see what the people have to say about the situation.
Okay, well, my name is Akua Page.
You know, I'm a Galagishi woman.
Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina.
And when I say I'm a Gullah Geechee, that means I'm a fighter.
And so what has happened here at the church behind me, this was obviously symbolic.
And what needs to be done is that it's time for us to, after we start praying, it's time for us to get off of our knees, get off of our feet, and actually put into work, and actually look at these generational issues.
Like, racism has always been a big issue, especially in Charleston.
Charleston, where the number one slave imported was created down here.
So this issue is...
It's nothing really shocking.
Racism has always dreaded these streets.
It's what fueled Charleston economics is what keeps them in power right now today.
So what needs to happen, what needs to be done is everybody, you need to get off your couch.
You need to be out here in these communities.
You need to be speaking your truth.
And we need to be building.
We need to be building our communities.
That's what we need to do.
And we need to honor our ancestors.
He stood up for liberation.
That's what he stood for.
He didn't stand for us to just be sitting around being passive.
So my message I'm going to leave the world tonight is to honor DeMarbisi, honor Nat Turner, honor Harriet Tubman, and ask what would they do.
What I want to say is, you know, a lot of times Christianity has been distorted.
it has been distorted to make people believe that we are here to just be passive and have a love that saves enemy.
Come in and do whatever you will.
But that is not really the ministry of Jesus Christ.
Jesus talked about the good shepherd and the good shepherd.
We're calling on good shepherds in this community who will step up and actually help to defend poor people.
And those who are being left to defend for themselves against gun violence.
against police brutality, and against Domestic terrorism.
Not only is that an obligation of the ministry, of the Good Shepherd, but it's also an obligation of our U.S. Constitution.
In the Constitution, under the oath of enlistment and the oath of office, it says, I solemnly swear, to defend the U.S. Constitution against foreign and domestic enemies.
And so what we're seeing here is with all of our money and resources that we're putting on defense, almost a trillion dollars a year, we're never doing anything to defend poor people, especially people of color, from domestic enemies, from domestic terrorism.
So the constitutional obligation is being negated and neglected.
And we're here to say all Americans.
Regardless of race, deserve protection from our nation.
They shouldn't have to resort to picking up guns on their own.
They shouldn't have to resort to forming any type of organization to respond violently.
But they should be protected.
They are American citizens.
We should not have to contend with people being able to walk into our churches.
And kill people who are conducting Bible study when we know they're having training camps set up around the nation.
We know they belong to militias.
We know the KKK still exists.
We know they're still killing under the Confederate flag.
So what we're saying is we need to understand the Constitution's Position as it pertains to domestic enemies.
Because look, we have people of power who can always fabricate who the foreign enemy is.
But we can see for ourselves who domestic enemies are.
And this was not ISIS who came in here.
This was not Al-Qaeda who came in here.
This was a person who has grown up looking at KKK, looking at white supremacist movies and books and listening to foxes who tell the news.
And he was ready to respond violently, and that has been passively tolerated from this government ever since African Americans put their slaves, put their feet on American soil, and it's time to stop it for once and for all.
The last thing I want to say, this is 150 years since Juneteenth.
We're here on June 19th.
When the slaves of Galveston, Texas finally got the memo that slavery had ended two and a half years later.
But here we are, 150 years, as if some of us still hadn't gotten the memo.
Slavery has ended.
African Americans are full-blooded citizens.
They must be protected.
And they should not have to open themselves up to white supremacists and other people who are allowed to exist when we claim we have a war on terrorism.
What's your church, Pastor?
I'm affiliated more with the community.
I consider the community as my church.
I consider the streets as my church.
I consider herding people as my parishioners.
Okay.
Thank you, sir.
Gentlemen?
So we're out here again in front of Mother Emanuel on Calhoun Street in Charleston.
300 yards away is a statue of John C. Calhoun.
The individual that said, Keep these niggas down.
So we're out here right now fighting that same ideology that was in that killer's mind, in that terrorist's mind.
The symbols, the practices, the procedures, the laws.
We're after all of that.
We are going to tear down and bury white supremacy once and for all.
So there it is, straight from the mouths of the people of Charleston.
