I want to talk about a state of emergency that was declared in California and Nevada because the drought was so severe that fires were breaking out all over Nevada, all over California.
Fortunately or unfortunately, I wrote about this problem 30 years ago in the book State of Emergency and ironically there is a state of emergency 30 years later.
Some of it due to climate change, most of it due to man's arrogance and ignorance for not building better water systems.
What do I mean?
Presently, most of the water that comes out the West comes from Lake Powell in Arizona.
It travels to Lake Mead, to the Colorado River.
It goes through Arizona, Nevada, Wyoming, Utah, and California.
In California, the water is used 70% at the San Joaquin Valley.
in order to create and develop nuts and almonds.
That's correct.
The people do not get the water that comes in from the Colorado River.
So what happens?
As a result of the absence of any new development, mind you, in the book State of Emergency, I had characters who were willing to create a civil war if the water was not turned back to the various states.
At present, I'm not concerned about a civil war, but I am concerned about the fact that we haven't built up the proper infrastructure to acquire more and more water through the past 100 years.
In fact, Arizona, Lake Powell went down almost 40%.
That means in a few more years, we're going to have a shortage of water in Lake Powell that may come down over 900 feet.
If that comes down to 900 feet, that means there's no water to go into the Colorado River, the Lake Mead, into Utah, Wyoming, or anywhere else.
What does this water do for us?
Well, number one, it creates a lot of grass in Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
Where does the grass go to?
Unfortunately, it goes to the Middle East.
However, a lot of the food that came out of these states, particularly The meats, the vegetables have been shipped to the Northeast.
So it's not only the Southwest states that will be affected, it's the Northeast as well.
We will not have the kind of food, the kind of vegetables, the kind of meats that we're used to.
So really what we have at present is not a political or even a military crisis.
It's a crisis of water.
That's why I called it a state of emergency.
Lest you think we're the only country with this crisis, the irony is that the Middle East is also suffering from the same problem.
Syria depends on Tigris-Euphrates.
That's gone down 50%.
So Syria has to cull water from other sources.
The only country that has its own water supply, and ironically does not depend on a river or a lake, is Israel.
Israel is dependent on one concept only, desalination.
It takes the water from the ocean or the sea or brackish water from internal areas and it desalinates it into 99% of all the water that's available for the people in Haifa, Tel Aviv and elsewhere.
In fact, we might start thinking of developing desalination plants along the eastern and Pacific coast, but we do have to spend money, and this is where the Biden administration has to focus in very quickly on providing billions of dollars, literally billions of dollars, to develop the infrastructure so that we can cull more rain, more water, and be able to maintain our lifestyle.
Eisenhower said, The only concern I have is one concern.
Is it good for America or is it bad?
Presently, the state of emergency is not good for America.
