Freedomain Radio - Stefan Molyneux - Old Computers Go to Hell Aired: 2025-06-14 Duration: 05:10 === From 300 Board to Cloud Computing (05:10) === [00:00:00] Alright, here we go. [00:00:02] So, let us talk about this. [00:00:08] So, a job that gets replaced by a new technology. [00:00:13] Hmm. [00:00:16] It's a little fucking rich, honestly, when people type on their 21st century lit-up keyboards, navigating with their Logitech laser mice. [00:00:26] You know, I remember back in the day, man, you had to, Unscrew the bottom of the mouse and clean it out from time to time. [00:00:32] Otherwise, it just kind of stopped working. [00:00:34] It used to drive me nuts with my Atari 520ST that half the time you have to thump the mouse and get it to work. [00:00:40] Now these things work on air, clouds, thoughts. [00:00:43] It's incredible. [00:00:44] So people who are posting on a new platform, rumble.com, a new platform, did not exist even a couple of years ago, using their super fancy keyboard and mice. [00:00:57] Maybe even voice dictation. [00:00:58] Maybe they talked into their phone, and their phone translated it into English. [00:01:03] Oh, I bet you they're also staring at a flicker-free flat-screen TV. [00:01:08] I remember when I was a kid, we had a TV that cost $10. [00:01:14] And if you turned it too bright, it got all distorted, so you kind of had to look at it like it was an old aquarium. [00:01:20] And I remember trying to watch Wimbledon, because we were big tennis people back in the day. [00:01:26] And you couldn't see anything. [00:01:29] Like in the old TVs, oh, the golfer has hit the ball into a cloudy sky. [00:01:34] Let's just wave the camera around and then, oh, there it is. [00:01:36] And you couldn't see smack. [00:01:39] So I bet you he's got a nice flat screen, a nice flat screen monitor. [00:01:46] And my first computer ran at one megahertz. [00:01:54] The first computer I bought was an Atari 800. [00:01:57] I think it ran at 1 MHz. [00:01:59] And this was player missile graphics, and it had a cozy 8K of RAM, which I then later, in a very sketchy parking lot interaction, bought 32K of RAM to bring it up to 40. And with 8K of RAM, you couldn't even go into graphics 8 with programming, which is the highest level of graphics, where you had to simulate colors by using alternate lines, because the red and the blue. [00:02:22] went alternate lines on these crappy old TVs. [00:02:24] I bet you he's not... [00:02:40] No, he's embracing all the new things in the world. [00:02:44] God almighty. [00:02:46] People, people, people, this is not directed at you, or even Silver Spider in particular. [00:02:52] Get your head out of your asses and look at what you're doing before you start criticizing the world. [00:02:59] Just look at what you're doing and you will solve 90% of your philosophical, moral, or economic issues. [00:03:05] Are you working on a very old computer? [00:03:08] You are not. [00:03:10] Are you working on a cathode ray tube monitor? [00:03:13] You are not. [00:03:13] You are working on a nice digital LED or OLED flat screen. [00:03:20] Are you using a typewriter or a keyboard? [00:03:24] Is your keyboard PS1 or is it USB? [00:03:30] Do you have a 300-board dial-up modem? [00:03:36] Back in my day, says Granny, the computers used to talk to each other by screaming over the phone lines. [00:03:42] Okay, let's get you to bed. [00:03:46] When you try to access the internet, does everyone yell that you interrupted their phone call and it sounds like robots being tortured to death in an orgasm orgy? [00:03:54] Nope. [00:03:55] Bet you got a nice, fast fiber optic or at least cell data plan, right? [00:04:02] Some satellite thing. [00:04:04] super fast, right? [00:04:06] I remember when it felt like My first modem was 300 board. [00:04:11] It was built into... [00:04:21] Well, I blew my bank on that one, but I needed it for university. [00:04:26] So back in the day, it felt like you could type a web page faster than it could download over 300 board mode. [00:04:36] And I remember when a friend of mine showed me his, it went 300 board, And I remember very clearly having a phone line internet. [00:05:00] Ooh, quick question. [00:05:02] Do you have a Victrola? [00:05:07] Do you know the phrase, put a sock in it, which means be quiet?
