Here we talk about the far right, their fellow travellers, and what they say to each other when they think we're not listening.
The show is hosted by Daniel Harper and me, Jack Graham.
We're both he-him.
Be aware, we cover difficult, sometimes nasty subject matter, so content warnings always apply.
And welcome back, listeners, to the I Don't Speak German podcast, the carbon fibre sub of podcasts that, despite numerous warnings, we keep on taking down to the depths.
One of these days, I tell you one of these days too soon.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I was going to say, I was going to say that's a, that's a very like relevant reference there.
That's a very like current reference to this point.
You've got to balance it, haven't you, between too soon and still topical.
Yeah, fair.
I think I've timed it perfectly, actually, with my usual excellent judgment.
The podcast in which- If you disagree, I don't want to hear about it.
The podcast in which if it doesn't fit, you must quit.
That's the...
So yeah, this is bonus number 30, and I suppose it's after a bit of a break.
It's us dipping our toes back in the old water.
I'm back in water to do a bit of recording.
And in this episode, well, firstly, Daniel, how the hell are you?
I have been recovering from surgery for the last month or so.
I kind of tweeted out when I was first in surgery.
I've not described the details of that in public in any great detail, and I don't plan on doing that at this moment.
I will probably do that when I'm a little bit closer to being fully recovered.
The terrible thing about being in recovery from surgery is you spend all day in bed.
You just can't do anything.
But the great thing about that is suddenly you have time to read all those books you put on your phone for all those years.
And so, uh, it means that, uh, we're actually going to do in cold blood, which I think we were planning to do like a year ago at this point was when we first suggested it.
Yeah.
So, um, you know, since we, since we first came up with this idea, I suffer excruciating pain and surgery, but you know, you get, you get bonus content that we've been trying to do for a while.
So, you know, yeah.
On the plus side, uh, You get an hour, maybe an hour and a half of content listeners.
So it's all, it's all been worth it really.
Yeah.
It's all, it's all, you know, six and one half dozen of the other, really, you know, yeah.
And it's, that's kind of, um, it's kind of on point actually, because the question of human suffering and whether or not it's worth, uh, art or, you know, in this case, Content, you know, cultural production, whatever you want to call it.
That's, um, that's a question that comes up in relation to what we're talking about.
I read two books and watched three movies for this podcast.
And normally the bonus episodes are meant to be like, yeah, these are the, these are the easy, like quick and easy.
Like, oh yeah, we watch a two hour movie and then talk about it for an hour and a half, you know, sort of, you know.
This is supposed to be the vacation from the May episodes.
Instead, this one ended up taking about as much time as a regular episode would have taken because I did a ton of background reading on this.
Of course, I did because, you know, I got fascinated by it.
So, you know, yeah, that's where we're going.
No, I've done the same thing because I re-read the book, I watched the 67 film, I watched the two movies about Truman Capote researching and writing the book, Infamous and Capote, and I also watched a four-part documentary about the Clutter Murders as well.
I did not watch that four-part documentary, but I did download it.
It was on my list of things to do, and I just didn't take care of it.
So you've done more than I have, although I read an extra book, so we'll see.
That's it.
You've also tantalizingly told me that you've read something called the sequel.
To In Cold Blood, which I'm scratching my chin and trying to think what that could possibly be, but you can tell me about it later.
It's effectively an alternate theory of the crime, and it reveals some extra details, which are fascinating.
And I'm afraid that's all you're getting of that, at least for the time being.
If you want to hear the rest of it, you'll have to give myself or Daniel as little as $1 a month on Patreon.
When you do, you'll have access to this episode and all our previous bonus episodes, the entire back catalogue.
