Rubin Report - Dave Rubin - Dave Rubin on Identity Politics and Prejudice | DIRECT MESSAGE | Rubin Report Aired: 2016-01-27 Duration: 02:35 === Care Beyond Labels (02:33) === [00:00:02] One of the reasons I like doing long-form interviews is that I can really focus in on important issues with my guests. [00:00:08] In many cases, the issues are inextricably connected, making it easy to go from topic to topic. [00:00:14] If we're talking about political correctness, that's a pretty easy jump to free speech, which is then another easy jump to the regressive left. [00:00:22] Sometimes these jumps just appear when I'm not looking for them, and that's usually when the conversations get really good. [00:00:28] It's the spaces where you have to think that are the breeding ground to spark new ideas. [00:00:34] My guest this week is civil rights attorney and legal expert Areva Martin. [00:00:38] I've done the Dr. Drew show on HLN several times with Areva and always find her to be incisive, thought-provoking, and passionate. [00:00:45] While we've appeared together several times, this will be the first time we really get to flesh out some ideas in a long-form way without worrying about a commercial break. [00:00:54] Areva and I are going to dive into a ton of hot topics and big ideas this week. [00:00:58] We're going to discuss everything from the Black Lives Matter movement, to the war on drugs, to the Oscars So White controversy. [00:01:04] As a Harvard educated black woman who founded and manages her own very successful law firm, I don't think I could find a better person to tackle so many important issues with than Areva. [00:01:14] You see what just happened there? [00:01:15] I just played some identity politics, didn't I? [00:01:18] Areva happens to be black and happens to be a woman, but in reality, how is that important to our conversation? [00:01:25] Actually, I don't really think it is. [00:01:27] I assume some of her views are based on her own personal experiences, but what I care about are her ideas, not the color of her skin or her gender. [00:01:37] We really have to get over the idea that by looking at someone you can figure out what they're all about. [00:01:42] I literally could not care less about someone's skin color, their religion, or their sexuality. [00:01:49] What I care about is their ideas. [00:01:52] What do they believe? [00:01:53] Why do they believe it? [00:01:53] Are they right? [00:01:54] Are they wrong? [00:01:55] What kind of world are they trying to create? [00:01:57] That is simply all that matters to me. [00:02:01] There are black conservatives out there. [00:02:02] There are Mexican libertarians. [00:02:04] There are lesbian Christians. [00:02:06] And there are cisgendered, blue-haired, video game-playing, bisexual Quakers. [00:02:10] And if you care about all those labels more than the ideas that the people themselves believe in, then you are actually part of the problem. [00:02:18] If you truly care about minorities, then you have to care about minorities within those minorities. [00:02:24] If you truly care about diversity, then you have to acknowledge diversity within diversity itself. [00:02:31] We should be defined by what we believe, not prejudged by people's assumptions.
