Ladies and gentlemen, I may need to acknowledge something and slightly, in a very small way, apologize.
I asked the staff mere moments ago if in the previous hour I sounded distracted.
Now, they knew I was distracted because they could see it.
So I asked, did I sound distracted?
They said, yes, since you're asking, to be honest, you did.
The first hour was okay, but the second hour you sounded distracted, which makes me mad because that means that my professionalism did not carry me through the day.
I have had a, it's taking me about 90 seconds to print one page of paper today.
And the printer shut down for a whole 20 minutes.
We've been working trying to get it fixed while I've been doing the program.
The printer is this radio program.
And if it doesn't work, and I've got a second alternative printer here, but to change the default and so forth, they have time to do that in the middle of the program.
So I was getting, I just, I just printed, so four lines took 90 seconds to print it.
So we've got some kind of problem here today, and I've been trying to fix it and deal with it while hosting the program at the same time.
So if I have sounded distracted to you, that is the reason why.
There is a column in the New York Times today.
I meant to mention this at the top of the program.
I really can't believe they published.
Zeb Chaffetz, who has a book coming out May 25th called Rush Limbaugh, An Army of One, has sort of a preview of the book in a column today, The Limbaugh Victory.
And it's not just about Tuesday, it's about the past year.
And I was informed of it last.
I saw it last night when they posted it on their website.
I looked at it.
How did this get past Bill Keller?
How did this get past Jill Abramson?
How did it get past Gail Collins?
How did it get past any of the editors at the New York Times?
No, I'm not going to read it.
We've linked to it at rushlimbaugh.com.
You know, Sterdly, I don't like talking about myself that much.
But here's the point.
It's the third most popular, i.e. the third most emailed article in the paper today.
It is the most popular op-ed in the New York Times today.
It's published right there on page 827, right along with Nicholas Christoph, who is a staff columnist.
It is number eight on the overall list, which includes the cumulative totals from previous days as well.
And it's rising every hour.
So, and I'm not going to take the time.
All right, print it out, print it out, and I'll read it.
It'll take me two hours to print it in here.
It'll probably take you two hours to find it on the New York Times website.
I'm still waiting for two weeks on those iPads you promised.
I got a lot of things irritating me there today.
And if I were, if it weren't for my profound professionalism, I would have gotten up and walked out of this show today, just like some guy called the, call me, he said the Republican should have walked out of the, out of the house today.
Now, here's a story, ladies and gentlemen.
This is from Fortune magazine.
Why Walmart's sales should have everyone worried.
Now, if anybody thinks that we are in the midst of an economic recovery, this story is a tantamount admission that we, why are you sneaking in here to give me this?
Like they're crawling in there.
Oh, he doesn't want to be seen on the ditto camp snurdly and his anonymity.
It certainly looks like happy days are here again.
Many of the nation's biggest retailers, including Saks, Hewlett-Packard, Home Depot, Target, have released cheery sales reports.
April's job reports showing a slight increase in the work week and pay for workers and more hiring across the board.
And then there's Walmart, whose happy yellow face switched to a grimace when they released its first quarter sales on Tuesday.
Although international growth helped push revenues up 6%, sales at U.S. stores fell 1.4% from the same period last year.
And the company had no one to blame but its shoppers.
More than ever, our customers are living paycheck to paycheck, said the chief financial officer of Walmart.
Now, it's no big surprise that Sachs and Neiman and what are the others, Hewlett-Packard, Home Depot, they'd be going up.
I mean, the wealthy are still wealthy.
They're just not as wealthy, but they're still wealthy.
But Walmart, I mean, that's America.
Their sales are down.
And Obama wants to try to tell us that we're in a recovery.
Unemployment numbers ratchet back up today, 24,000, 25,000.
They were expecting it to go down 4,000.
Now, other consumer-dependent companies are doing better, but by how much?
Hewlett-Packard made its numbers by selling hardware to corporations, not computers, or consumers.
Home Depot was pulled forward by do-it-yourself buyers buying small items and by homeowners making one-off summer purchases of new landscaping tools and grills.
Big ticket items are still sitting collecting dust while a contractor business remains weak.
Sachs' results were impressive, but it sells luxury goods to a sliver of the American demographic, one that benefited most from the psychologically important stock market rise earlier this year.
So who are you supposed to believe?
In this case, Bentonville, when Walmart, an economic bellwether, notes that customers can't afford the gas to get to the stores and that they're increasingly using food stamps when they get there, things are bad.
The problem is that both the economy and consumer sentiment remain shaky.
Even Target, which reported better than expected results yesterday, was forced to concede that while touting his company's success, the chief executive said, we believe that both are still somewhat unstable and fragile and will continue to likely experience occasional setbacks as the year progresses.
That frailty in confidence hasn't been helped by the flash crash or the video rioting in Greece, but there are also more structural concerns that could affect the durability of the U.S. recovery.
Overall, while retail sales have continued to expand over the last seven months, the rate of increase has slowed since March.
Much of the retail rebound has taken place on the shoulders of wealthier consumers.
About 40% of all spending currently comes from the 20% of households with the highest incomes.
But that's even going to take a nosedive come January because their effective tax rate's going to go up 39.6.
The state tax rates are going to go up.
It's going to be bad out there.
There's going to be a bloodletting.
And then we've got the Obamacare tax increases that phase in as this program, if not repealed, phases in.
Now, we got all this news.
Walmart, customers living paycheck to paycheck, can't afford the gas to get to the store.
Sales are down 1.4%.
We spent, let's just call it a cool trillion dollars on a jobs creating surplus, right?
I think we can all agree it didn't work.
Not from our perspective.
It probably worked like a champ for Obama because it was a slush fund.
The money went to the states and they're now running out.
We know the bad shape that New York and California are in.
You can expect state government layoffs there yet to be seen as whether or not they will riot as they are in Greece.
Wouldn't be surprised if they do in certain sectors of the country, various states.
So we spent this trillion dollars on a stimulus to create jobs, an utter failure.
The automobile companies are, I mean, Chrysler's losing money and then being run by the regime.
Walmart, our GM paid back its loan, great fanfare, but they used government money, taxpayer money, to pay back the loan.
It just shifted pockets.
And the regime tells us every day, yep, we had a roaring economy.
Things are looking, why, if we hadn't taken the steps that we took, why, who knows how bad it would be.
It really can't get much worse.
Remember that during the campaign in 1992?
We were in the mildest of recessions I've ever seen.
The Clinton campaign, talking about the worst economy in the last 50 years.
And I had people calling here, Rush, it can't get any worse.
I said, yeah, it was worse than this 10 years ago, 1982.
We are about at 1982 levels, but we're showing no recovery signs whatsoever.

I have a friend to send me a note.
He said, Rush, it really, no surprise to see Obama stand with the Senor Wences against Arizona and the vast majority of people in the United States.
Is there any issue today?
Terrorism, health care, cap and trade, taxes, spending, where Obama stands with the majority of the American public?
No.
A point that I have made over and over again.
When have we ever had a president like this?
We've never had a president governing against the will of the people.
We've never had a president like this siding against the American people.
You remember yesterday we played the audio, and it was tough to hear.
I missed a crucial part of it when I accused the woman, the little girl at the school, a second grader, of being a plant.
I'm now revising my guess to the point that I'm undecided about this.
Because the part that I missed, she says, my mom says that Barack Obama's taking everybody away that doesn't have papers.
Michelle Obama says, yeah, well, that's something we have to work on.
The girl says, well, my mom doesn't have papers.
Now, that's in there, but I didn't hear it.
So effectively, this girl outed her mother as an illegal.
Now, I don't know that that was a setup, but anyway, immigration officials, this is from the brave carriers of the flame at CNN, immigration officials will not swoop in to deport a woman whose daughter asked First Lady Michelle Obama about taking people away if they don't have proper paperwork.
This is from the Department of Homeland Security.
Immigration and customs enforcement investigations are based on solid law enforcement work and not classroom QA.
This from DHS spokesman Matt Chandler, Immigration and Customs ICE is part of DHS.
He said that there was a Supreme Court decision.
Makes it clear if there's proof of residency in the county, then we can educate the child.
We're not going to identify the student or her parents.
We protect the identity of our students.
That's Donna Tofig, spokesman for the Montgomery County, Maryland schools.
So let's go back and listen to this.
This is the unidentified second grader yesterday afternoon in Silver Springs, Maryland.
And the little girl said, My mom doesn't have papers.
Did you hear her say that?
And yesterday, I'll say, I didn't hear it, and it's not in the transcript.
So I didn't know.
So do you think it was a setup?
You still think it's a setup?
Total setup.
Okay, well, I'll go with the benefit of the doubt.
Here it is.
Barack Obama's taking everybody to land that doesn't have papers.
Yeah, well, that's something that we have to work on, right?
To make sure that people can be here with the right kind of papers, right?
That's exactly right.
Yeah, well, we have to work on that.
We have to fix that.
And everybody's got to work together in Congress to make sure that that happens.
All right.
So now I understand what Michelle Obama's saying.
I thought Michelle Obama missed the question yesterday because I didn't, it's my fault, my hearing.
I did not know little girls.
My mom doesn't have papers.
I thought Michelle was rambling.
Yeah, we got to fix that.
Yeah, Congress got to do something.
So Michelle Obama was actually supportive of the little girl.
This is what I said about, just to revisit this, I'm not afraid, my friends, to air errors.
There's no question that kid's question was a plant.
Second grader, she was supposed to say Arizona, not Obama.
I mean, she, Michelle, just look at Michelle Obama's answer to the question.
Michelle Obama knew she was going to get a question from the kid about Arizona requiring papers.
And a little kid goofed up the question.
Arizona's a tough word for a second grader, but Obama, she hears it all the time.
No, I mean, I don't think there's any doubt it was a setup question.
And look at Michelle's answer is the best indication to me the whole thing was a plant because if Michelle had actually listened, oh, no, no, it's not my husband that's going to take people's papers.
No, no, no, it's not my husband that's going to ask her papers.
No, no, it's Arizona that's going to ask her.
We've got to have Congress to solve that.
But she just answered it as though the question was asked about Arizona, not her husband.
So just no doubt in my mind.
Yeah, well, okay, I guess I'll come down on the side.
It's still a plant because Michelle's answer was very, very smooth.
She was expecting the question.
And I just, I missed the second thing, the little girl said, but my mommy doesn't have papers.
So my point that she meant to say Arizona and not Obama was wrong.
So anyway, this has become fodder for morning TV in Sacramento.
Eyeball News 10 in Sacramento co-hosts Dan Elliott and Monica Woods discuss the little girl who asked Michelle Obama the immigration question.
Officials say that the girl's mother is more fearful than ever.
Some people were saying that perhaps that question was planted.
That's what Rush Lindbaugh came out and said right off the bat.
And he said the fact that she said Obama rather than Arizona kind of made his case.
At least that's what he was suggesting.
Then MSNBC this morning on the daily rundown, this is Chuck Todd's program with Savannah Guthrie.
It's F. Chuck Todd and F. Savannah Guthrie.
And they had this exchange out there, Chuck Todd did with Nora O'Donnell.
What's so interesting about these moments, of course, is they're not scripted moments.
As a second grader, there happens to be a lot of Hispanics at this school.
And all of a sudden, it's talking about our mom's immigration status with the First Lady of the United States.
You have to be impressed with the First Lady's ability to somehow answer the girl's question without inflaming either side of the debate.
Well, I totally agree.
And the fact that the First Lady said it's something that everybody's got to work together in Congress to make sure that she was right on point.
That's a reminder.
She's a lawyer.
And shrewd.
That's shrewd.
Boy, she's boy, is she smart.
You have to be impressed, the first lady's ability to somehow answer the girl's question without inflaming either side of the debate.

I just wanted to make a comment about the illegal immigration debate that I don't hear a lot of people talking about, and that is basically American pride and exceptionalism.
I think the proponents of the amnesty plan went about it the wrong way as far as when I speak to people who came through legally and they're proud to share their papers.
They're proud to be an American.
It's an honor to be a citizen of this country.
And are these illegal immigrants, are they willing to, you know, pledge allegiance to this country?
Are they proud to be Americans or they just want to make money and go back to Mexico?
Because when I see the demonstrations, if they had an American flag instead of a Mexican flag, and they were saying, We want to be Americans because it's an honor to be American, I think people would feel differently about it, but it seems like they just want to use our country, trash it.
And, you know.
Well, that's clearly one of the problems: that they're not here to assimilate.
They want to maintain their own culture first, which is unlike the people who really want to come to this country to be Americans, as though that's now a bad thing to come here and want to be.
It's better to come in and be who you are rather than become an American.
But your point is very shrewd, and it illustrates that the very people sponsoring amnesty are not even concerned about these people liking the country.
They're not even concerned about them understanding the country.
They're not even concerned about them becoming real citizens.
All they want is their vote.
And in fact, the more economically challenged they remain, the poorer they remain, and as uneducated as they can be, the more dependent they will be.
Folks, as I said earlier, all of these press people, I got story after story.
I've decided I'm not going to waste too much time on it because I can't say more than I said yesterday.
But all this spin that this was a giant Obama victory yesterday or Tuesday in the elections.
If Obama won big, he wouldn't be throwing the race card down like happened today with Senor Wences bashing Arizona and yesterday and last night as well.
If Obama had won big, he wouldn't be throwing the race card.
He's clearly in need of these Hispanic votes.
He's going to need them in 2012 because he's lost half the country.
If he hasn't quite lost half the country, he's on the way to losing half the country and he knows it.
Harry Reed is going to need Hispanic votes if he has a prayer of saving his seat in Nevada in November.
Now, what he's saying, that we know there's not going to be an amnesty bill before the election, but there's going to be a lot of talk about it, and they're hoping that the talk Will encourage Hispanics to go ahead and the Democrats really care.
They want us to have amnesty.
They're going to get it done.
They can't get it done now.
They're hoping that will inspire support and votes, which is all this is about.
Ladies and gentlemen, I know I said that I might read Zeb Chaffett's column in the New York Times today, The Limbaugh Victory, but I'm not going to read it.
No, I'm not going to read it because the New York Times needs hits.
They're just in trouble over there.
There aren't a whole lot of people visiting their website.
Even though they're preparing to go behind a paywall in January, they're still in trouble.
And we want to help out wherever we can.
And this column is already the most emailed column on the webpage, on the op-ed page.
It's the third most emailed column or story in a whole paper.
All right.
Snurdley wants just a tease.
His strategy was simple.
With Democrats controlling Congress, Mr. Limbaugh saw that there was no way to stop the president's agenda.
He dismissed the moderates' notion that compromising with the president would make Republicans look good to independents.
Instead, he decreed that the Republicans must become the party of no and forced Democrat candidates, especially centrists, to go into 2010 with the sole responsibility for the Obama program and the state of the economy.
And that is what has happened.

I am in Fontana, California.
Rush, thank you for taking my call.
Okay, I have, when I was 19, I was hit by an illegal 15-year-old immigrant who the cops told me I could do nothing about.
When I was 21, I used to call on people's Social Security numbers to match their names and their numbers, and people would come in repeatedly with different numbers.
Wait, wait, wait, wait!
Hold it a minute.
You lost me because you're not from Point Siena.
You're from where?
I am from Fontana, California.
Fontana.
Okay.
So when you were 19, you were hit by an illegal 15-year-old immigrant.
And the cops told you you could do nothing about it.
Yeah, and I had to pay my insurance for it.
Okay, now, we jump forward six years.
You're 21.
Uh-huh.
You used to call on people's social security numbers to match their names.
Where?
What were you doing?
I worked for a meat packing company, and all the workers in the, I would call on the social security numbers for all the workers to see if the names matched the numbers.
People, the same people, especially Maria Lopez-Lopez, man.
I remember her name.
She came in with several different numbers.
Finally, one hit, and we hired her.
I asked them, I told the Social Security office, why is this happening?
This same woman's coming in.
They said, well, you know, we can't tell you any other information except that the name matches the number.
So she got hired.
And then now comes to, I'm 32.
And I want to tell you about white guilt, fraud prevention at the company level, and saving our local police time and money all in one swipe of a card, an ID card.
I went to Walgreens to return an item.
There was a gentleman behind me who was Hispanic and he was speaking Spanish daughter.
The first thing that the people, the manager asked me for was my receipt.
Second thing she asked me for was my ID.
I asked her why she needed my ID.
She said well, it prevents fraud in the company and it saves the cops time coming down if someone is doing it repeatedly.
I said, what if I don't have my ID?
She said well, then I'll look at you and determine if I should return this, if I should give money back for this item.
I thought that was funny.
So I said you're gonna physically profile me if I don't have an ID hunt.
That makes sense.
So I returned my item, and the gentleman behind me, I thought he was whisking, so I sort of brought him into the conversation.
Well, I left.
The first thing the gentleman asked in broken English was, do I have to show my ID?
The look on the woman's face, who was white, just got wider, and she said no.
I am really tired of, I'm basically able to be physically profiled.
This man, for some reason, she just totally X'd out anything because of the guilt.
I could see it on her face.
And I'm just really tired of these people.
Excellent.
We can't account for them.
Our cities are losing money because we can't account for them.
It's as simple as that.
They're not accountable.
And this is wrong.
And I'm really upset about it.
I've been listening to you since I was 14.
I'm 32.
This has been going on all my life.
I live in Southern California.
And it's really sad.
It's sad to see my beautiful California go down the dumps out of money.
A gentleman just came to my door the other day and asked me if I needed tutoring for my child.
He looked at my child and he looked at me and he said, never mind.
I said, well, why do you say never mind?
And he said, well, I don't think you go to the school and I don't think so you wouldn't qualify.
One of the things that really dovetails or ties directly to what you're saying in Arizona, when stopped for a traffic question, right now, illegals do not have to produce their IDs.
Everybody else does.
That's why the new law, illegals do not have to produce IDs right now in Arizona.
That's why they have done the new law.
Just like at this department store, where was it, Walgreens?
You said it was a drugstore?
And you're right.
In that case, I'm sure it was white guilt.
And I want to know, do they even know there are no such thing as papers?
It's called a matricular card or it's called a California ID card.
You carry it in your wallet.
There's no papers.
You don't carry a pack of papers with you.
That's a ridiculous statement.
I'm so glad that I'm talking on a nationally syndicated program at the UBS because people need to know that this happens from the bottom, from a manager at Walgreens to the top of Congress.
There is a guilt.
There is something going on in this country that we need to stop because everyone should be equal.
Everybody.
I'll tell you what's going on, Jennifer.
What's going on is a bunch of people who, this is grievance politics, and a bunch of people who have held grievances for years and years and years are now looking, they're now led by somebody who believes it's time to get even.
And so they are exploiting white guilt.
And they are saying that white power and a white majority led to all this discrimination, unfairness, and it's time to make it right.
And so that's what's happening here.
And I think a lot of people have a direct fear of being thought of or called a racist.
And so they will do anything, even your clerk at Walgreens, to avoid any kind of conflict or controversy in that area.
They don't want it.
But it's not about race.
It's about accountability.
It's about No, it is about race in the way that we are being divided.
I know your point about accountability is where are these people?
We're not holding anybody accountable for their corruption, for their dishonesty.
That's absolutely right.
But the way they're getting away with it and the way they're being motivated to be corrupt is the playing of the race card.
If you didn't do that, there wouldn't be any guilt.
A friend of mine just moved to Arizona.
She's Hispanic and she lives in Phoenix.
She's scared because she will not read the bill that she's going to get pulled over and arrested, even though she's a Californian with an accent like me.
I don't understand.
I tell her, I explain to her, look, you are an American.
People don't understand.
The media is putting out things that make no sense.
And I'm really sick of this at the bottom.
I'm at the bottom.
I'm not a corporate anything.
I'm nobody.
And I'm sick of me having to deal with this and be quiet, or else I'm a racist.
I know.
I know.
And it's been very effective.
Even Senator McCain, Juan McCain, has admitted that illegal aliens hit people with their cars, often for profit.
And that Snerdley was stunned when I told him illegals are not asked for IDs.
They're not, I don't know how they know not to ask.
I guess they're racial profiling in a reverse way, reverse profiling.
Oh, you look like you're an illegal.
I'm not, I can't ask you for your ID.
That's why Arizona has revised the law.
Everybody else in Arizona, you know when you get stopped, you have to show everything.
License, registration, proof of insurance.
They don't.
In California, if you're shocked at the Arizona law, Snerdley, in California, it's the same thing with DUI stops.
Illegals, if they do not have a license or insurance, can get their cars if they can find somebody with a license to go with them to get the car back.
Everybody else has their car impounded.
I kid you not.
Now, you look at this and you say, well, what is the logical reason for this?
I'm sure that there is a lot of white guilt involved in this.
I'm sure that there is a profound amount of white guilt that drives this.
But there is also a lot of bias.
Remember, in a lot of these states, a lot of these cities, towns are run by Democrats, and everything to a liberal, to a leftist, is political.
And they do believe that these people are discriminated against, that they're a poor, downtrodden minority.
And just like Al Sharpton believes that some of his charges ought to be allowed to get away with some stuff because, well, it's like Congressman William Jefferson, Democrat Louisiana.
When he got caught with 90 grand in his freezer around the time of Hurricane Katrina, there were actually people who said, well, you know, he grew up son of sharecroppers and he never, never, never really had any money.
You got to understand why it might be important to him to hold on to.
He don't want people taking it away from him.
There were people that said that.
This kind of poverty based on the assumption that you're poor because of the race that you are justifies not being held so accountable to the law.
So yes, it's true in California, DUI stops.
Illegals, if they don't have a license or insurance, can get their cars if they find somebody with a license to go get, to go with them when they get the car for the pound.
But everybody else gets their cars impounded.
Now, we have had the fear of being called a racist drummed into us.
There's nothing like it in the history of this country.
It was never so horrible to be called a communist.
Never, never, to be called a racist.
That was the absolute worst thing.
Now, they might ask you if you have an ID in Arizona if you're illegal, but you won't be taken in if you're an illegal alien.
Everybody else would be.
I mean, they're very, very lax.
The rules are very, very lax.
That's why Arizona has written the law.
Make it apply to everybody.
We got a brief time out here, folks.

McCain said it illegals and they're causing accidents.
All right.
After 20 plus years, there are still doubters in this audience.
Back on April 20th, McCain was on the O'Reilly factor, helping Bill look out for the folks.
And McCain said, I hope I'd be very sorry if profiling happens with this law, but I regret it.
But also, it's not just a number.
It's just not the murder of the rancher Robert Krantz.
It's people whose homes and property are being violated.
It's the drivers of cars with illegals in it that are intentionally causing accidents on the freeway.
Look, our border is not secured.
Our citizens are not safe.
That was McCain on the O'Reilly factor back on April 20th.
Precisely a month ago.
So there you have it.

One thing that everybody's been missing about this thing is that right now, as the law exists today, all law enforcement has the choice to inquire about any subject about their status, if they're legal here or not.
But they have the choice.
And that's the problem they've been having in Arizona.
Only the Maricopa County Sheriff has been enforcing that law.
And all the other police departments are saying no because of the political people above them are saying that.
Right.
Political pressure or guilt or sometimes they don't speak the language.
Okay.
All this law is doing is forcing all the law enforcement in Arizona having to ask for this.
Exactly.
And it's very simple.
I know.
It is so simple.
It's so simple that it threatens the regime and its agenda.
And that's why they got to trash it and bring in Senor Wences from Mexico to join them in trashing it.
