On this episode Travis, Liv, Jake and Julian examine reactions from the community, ranging from acceptance, denial, bewilderment, and rage. Plus, Jake treats us to a story about secret occult practices and the magical year of 1989. If you're hearing this, well done.
You found a way to connect to the internet.
Welcome to the QAA podcast premium episode 3.03, The Great Galler Disappointment.
As always, we are your host, Jake Rakitansky.
Liv Igar.
Julian Fields.
And Travis View.
Back in Premium episode 235, Liv introduced us to the Galler community.
This was, uh, I found very fascinating.
So these are Taylor Swift fans who believe that the mega star is secretly queer and closeted, and that she has hinted at this through her lyrics and some visuals and timing and public friendships.
Oh my God, another CIS white male who's appropriating gay culture.
Now, some in the community don't take it that seriously.
They kind of treat it more like a like a harmless fan theory or just a queer reading of art, but some take it very, very seriously.
So I thought it would be worthwhile to revisit that theory in light of the fact that just this week she announced her engagement to future Hall of Fame NFL tight end Travis Kelsey.
We're going to get white babies folks.
We're making the babies white again.
Well, I saw that actually online.
That seemed to be sort of the conservative discussion was they were like, this is going to inspire people to have children again.
This is going to make women want to let me nut in them.
It was so bizarre.
Zero shot that this is going to revive, like make a baby boom or whatever.
Like, I don't quite understand that but do they like Taylor now that she's gonna have white babies like a way longer it's not cultural because they hated her so much oh yeah it becomes a big culture war thing i think they just forgot i guess i guess so i mean who wouldn't right like how are we supposed to remember who's on what side it's all arbitrary yeah yeah it actually like legit i get why you wouldn't remember because it doesn't it's not articulating a real schism no i feel like there was a brief period where like like four chan weirdos
were like doing some fantasy about how like taylor swift was some sort of aryan queen like she was like secretly based but then she wound up like endorsing democratss repeatedly and then, like, you know, she endorsed the Harris candidacy.
So that was shot down.
There was a conspiracy theory that she was posting on four chan secretly like a decade ago or whatever with it, you know, it's like, oh, if you look in the background of this white woman posting, it's faceless, you can see it kind of looks like, you know, Taylor Swift's apartment or whatever.
So I think it's an extension of that.
Yeah, I think I remember that one.
So Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey announced their engagement on Instagram.
Kelsey's Instagram handle is Killa Trav, by the way, which is great.
Oh man, I feel I wish you had that Travis.
That's such a good name for you.
Taylor Swift and Killa Trav made an Instagram post.
XXX Killa Trav.
So yeah, we can see it's this lovely garden absolutely laden with flowers.
And the caption here is your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married and a little dynamite.
I'm told that that's like some people theorize that's actually TNT for Taylor in Trav.
Oh, no.
I would like to TNT this entire event and everyone who attends it when it happens eventually.
So as you can see here, the song on our Instagram post.
is So High School, which comes from their double album edition of her most recent album, The Tortured Poets Department, the Anthology.
Of course she used her own song.
But no, using your own song, I know.
That's yeah.
Why don't you give someone else a chance, huh?
I don't.
I don't know.
She has quite a catalog of music, and I don't know.
I feel like it would be strange if she chose anyone else's.
Wait, Taylor has like two albums, right?
I should know.
Jesus dude.
How many albums does Taylor Swift have?
Twelve.
Twelve.
Yeah.
Her twelfth is coming out this year.
Oh, that's a lot more than I thought.
Yeah.
So I feel like I should mention just generally.
Travis Kelsey, in addition to being a great football player, is an interesting tweeter.
I mean, Julian brought me some highlights from 2010 and 2011.
He's awesome.
And these are like other people that posted this online.
I want to be clear, but goddamn, man, I love him so much.
So this one, the first one from 2011 said, women that have a great sense, if humor, that's IF-H-U-M-E-R, hashtag plus.
It's not even required.
It's just a good addition.
If humor.
If humor.
Oh, he's so good.
And then, uh, say here, we got another one here.
I like this series of ones about a restaurant, if you know what I'm talking about.
Yeah, yeah, that one's coming out up, but there's one, a somewhat sacrilegious one, said happy Easter to all.
Hashtag shout out to Jesus for taking one for the team.
Ha ha.
He rules.
He rules, dude.
Being raised religious in the States, especially like in this day and age, is just such a funny combination of shit, you know?
Right.
And seeing Jesus as sort of like, you know, the sort of ringer on your team, on your sports team, because these are analogies that make sense to you.
Yeah.
He's like the guy who, like, snapped his leg getting you the Super Bowl.
And of course, yeah, I also have the ones about his favorite restaurant here.
Could you take these ones, Julian?
So these are three tweets.
all from 2010 within like three months of each other.
The first one says hashtag Chipotle will always be a great choice.
The second one says deaf appreciate everyone's birthday wishes from yesterday.
Had kind of a rough day, but everything's all good.
Think I'm ahead to hashtag Chipotle, though.
Chipotle.
And finally.
I really want some Chipotle now, but a day full of college football it is.
Yeah.
Just repeatedly misspelling it.
Strange.
No, but I love the use of the hashtag.
Like his understanding of hashtags, I would fucking love to understand.
Does he think he's like contributing to the conversation about Chipotle and yet spells it wrong every single time.
I love that.
Yeah.
The American football system is so cool where like these guys have to pretend they're actually getting through like college.
Like fairly like oh yeah.
This guy has a humanities degree.
Yeah.
I'm almost certain that whoever wrote these tweets would profit from CTE.
Like I think that it would actually like make them smarter.
In fact, he probably was able to date Taylor Swift because since the Chipotle tweets, he got hit a few too many times in the head.
A big reason why Taylor Swift is relevant to this podcast is that decoding.
meetings of messaging and finding clues, uncovering Easter eggs is a big part of Swifty culture.
Now, for her first five albums, she deliberately placed secret messages in the liner notes.
Like the decode at first was fairly simple.
So all the lyrics were in lowercase, but some of the letters were in uppercase.
And when the uppercase letters were placed together, they spelled out a clue.
It's crazy.
Like, I honestly, I thought that this is like a really cool way to do kind of viral marketing.
did think that one album where it just spelled kill yourself was a questionable choice.
So for example on her 2012 album Oh God.
Okay.
Kind of cryptic.
Woo, what does it mean?
So if you google Maple Lattes Taylor Swift, you'll be brought to a 2010 People magazine article headlined Taylor Swift in Jake's Gyllenhaal Share Thanksgiving Maple Lattes, which may offer some confirmation about the relationship that inspired the songs.
Only this kind of baking would lead you to like a People magazine article.
Yeah.
God, Maple Lattes.
Like if I decoded something and that's what I got.
But it's Taylor giving you secret information about her relationships that you want to know.
You want to be parasocial with her and she's telling just you because you've dedicated so much of your time to decoding literally everything she's saying.
It's kind of sociopathic.
Like, the more you think about it, that she's like encouraging this culture.
Like, it being a latte, but not just a latte, like a fucking flavored latte makes me so depressed for some reason.
