Here's the good news.
Secret police are not calling with guns to take them away into a prison camp in a frozen wasteland for sneaking out against the government.
They did that in calling these countries in the 20th century.
It's not going to have a team in America anymore in Western Europe.
First, imagine...
Secret police are not coming up as they don't have to be a tool.
There are places to shut you up and keep you quiet that don't involve physical force.
The powers that be, and that now includes major corporations, the educational establishment, the media, and the government, can just kick you off the internet, put you on a no-fly list, and bar you from using the banking system.
We can describe scenario number one as hard totalitarianism and scenario number two as soft totalitarianism.
All right, that's a good spot to break and now introduce Rod Dreher.

Rod and I last met, aside from my studio, in Hungary when I was speaking at a conference there.
And he speaks there a great deal.
And he has a lot of important thoughts on America, on Hungary, and the world.
So, Rod, hi.

So, tell me...
I'm very interested, and I think all my listeners should be.
I don't think most are.
In what's happening in Hungary, Viktor Orban is the most hated figure, I think, since Trump.
Is that fair to say?
By the Western media.
We're not hearing Rod.
How could that be?
I spoke to Rod for five minutes prior to coming on.
All right, here we are.
Can you hear me now?
Yes, I can.
Ah, okay.
Now, Viktor Orban is certainly the most hated man by the Western media, and just this week, or maybe it was late last week, Donald Trump endorsed him for re-election, which is causing the hair of all the liberal media to catch on fire, but it's going to help him in his re-election bid in Hungary because there are still a lot of people, conservatives in Hungary, who think Trump did the right thing.
But the thing I tell my friends is, listen, you cannot trust what the Western media had to say about Viktor Orban, about Hungary, about Poland, or any of the right-of-center parties in Europe, because our media come at it all from a liberal point of view, and they massage the facts, they twist things to make it seem like some Nazi takeover, when in fact people like Viktor Orban are just people who love their country and don't want the globalists to ruin it.
What do you think they hate about him most?
That he's a nationalist?
Yeah, I think so.
The first thing that made them really angry at him was he would not let this mass of immigrants from the Middle East in 2015 that Angela Merkel invited into Europe.
He didn't want them to stay in Hungary because he realizes that Hungarian culture is something very particular.
There are only about 9 million Hungarians in the world.
And if they lose what they have, then they're gone.
They're gone from history.
And this is seen as racist by the globalists and others in the EU, but Orban is simply defending his people and defending their way of life.
This past summer when I was over there, Dennis, there was a huge row after the Orban government passed a law that would not allow people to send LGBT propaganda to children and minors.
That was the state of the law.
It said only children and minors.
Well, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands blew up and said that we should kick Hungary out of the EU. Hungary is not trying to make Belgium or the Netherlands or France into Hungary.
They're just trying to protect their own way of life and their own kids.
And for this, he's hated.
By the way, explain to me that.
I don't even understand that.
What does that mean, banning LGBT propaganda to children?
Does that mean schools?
Sending them mail?
I don't follow.
Yeah, they could not teach LGBT stuff in schools without the parents' explicit permission, which strikes me as normal.
They can't have things like we have in the U.S., where you might remember last summer, Blue's Clues, the popular children's program, had a special segment where a drag queen, an animated drag queen, sang a Pride Parade marching song.
that sort of thing is not allowed to happen in Hungary because of the law.
It strikes me as the kind of law that is sensible.
You know, maybe not all countries want to have a law like that.
Look, I don't even think there should be heterosexual sex education in school.
Exactly.
So, it's not the place of schools to tell my children about these subjects.
That's my job.
But, of course, the left wants to undermine parental authority.
Do you know, by the way, you probably don't know, and I don't blame you.
It's my job every day to know this stuff.
Yesterday or last week, Washington State passed a law that a 13-year-old can undergo sex change surgery without parents knowing it.
They don't need parental permission.
13. And you know, our friend Abigail Schreier has been documenting this sort of thing.
Over and over and over again, the mainstream media don't want to talk about it because it undermines the progressive narrative.
But people have to wake up, Dennis, and have to realize that what we're seeing is the left trying to take children away from their parents.
This is exactly what happened in the Soviet Union.
And it's no surprise that the people who came to this country, to America, from the Soviet bloc...
Right, but their children become like Sergey Brin.
Parents come from the Soviet Union, and he runs Google and runs free speech to the ground.
How do you explain that?
It's unbelievable.
You know, when I was in Poland researching my book, Live Not By Lies, I found that the post-communist generation of Poles, Have no memory of what happened under communism because their parents, their grandparents, didn't want to burden them with all those bad memories.
The problem is now these kids are sitting ducks with Western propaganda.
Yes.
Maybe parents should burden their kids.

The reason why 2,000 flights were canceled over the weekend, Friday through Sunday, and then over 300 or nearly 400 more on Monday.
But the truth of the matter is, a lot of these people just caught out sick.

They've been threatened by their employer because their employer happens to be a federal contractor.

Because the federal government has their hands in Southwest Airlines, they have to comply.
Now, here's the news.
Nothing has happened as of yet.
So technically, Southwest Airlines does not have to comply right now.
They can wait for OSHA to make whatever edict they're going to lay out that has not been done thus far.
But nonetheless, they suspect that it is coming down the pike.
You get all these pilots, 10,000 pilots, 60 to 70% of these pilots are men and women that fought for our freedom, and we're going to kick them off the freaking job.
Can you imagine the disruption?
You talk about, we look at the ports in California.
Can you imagine the supply chain disruption?
If now we can't even unload cargo ships, and we're going to have fewer and fewer pilots?
Fewer trained pilots?
I don't want to fly.
I don't know if they're going to be like United Airlines and bring social justice warrior pilots on.
I don't even want to fly.
Listen, if you're a pilot, I don't care if you're pink, red, white.
I want the best doggone pilot when I'm sitting up in that can 30,000 feet above the ground.

Totalitarianism, can it happen in America?
Right now, at this very moment, on this date, do you think that there is any, are there any positive signs in the United States?
Again, we're not hearing Rod.

Yeah, well, I think the only positive sign that I see, Dennis, is that more and more people are starting to wake up to the reality of the kind of country we have become.
But we have so much farther to go before people will get energized to fight back.
Just yesterday when I sent a friend of mine who's in the military a link to the PragerU video about totalitarianism because he had mentioned to me that he thinks totalitarianism is on its way.
He told me that he couldn't click on the link because it's too dangerous to watch anything to do with Dennis Prager.
He's afraid his commanding officer will see it and he'll be kicked out of the military.
And he said that we can't talk about these things because the witch hunt in the military is real.
Dennis, I hear this all the time in my email box and when I go out to give speeches, people who are either active duty now or who recently got out of the military We're saying that this wokeness that has overtaken the military in the last two years, especially under Biden, is making it untenable for people who are conservatives, people of traditional religious faith, to stay in the military.
And this is really, really frightening.
And this is happening in our own country right now.
It's not in Russia.
It's not in some other country.
It's in America.
It's what was known in Stalin's Soviet Union as purge.
There's a purge taking place.
Is that fair to say?
Absolutely, it's fair to say.
I have a friend who's involved in the national security field, and he said this is going on right now.
And they're using January 6th as the Reichstag fire moment, the idea that we have to go stop all these right-wingers.
We have to purge them from the military to keep our democracy safe.
In fact, they're undermining the democracy and they're undermining our commitment to the country.
When they say people aren't fit to serve in the military because they listen to Dennis Prager or they read the wrong things or they hold the incorrect views, we're talking about civil war type stuff.
Then this is something the left is forcing on our country and on our military right now.
I'm sighing because I'll tell you, I never thought that my name would trigger such reactions and I don't even think it's deserved. - Right.
Netflix did not stream my movie with Adam Carolla, No Safe Spaces, and we found out from someone on Netflix because I'm in it.
And I always ask people, could you tell me what I have said in my lifetime of work, I've been on radio 40 years, that would render me...
So unacceptable?
What would the commander say?

But the answer really is, if you are an effective anti-left voice, you are to be shut up.

That's completely fair, and that, by the way, is why they hate Viktor Orban, because he's so effective, and you're effective, and I hope that I can be effective.

Well, this book of mine has sold very, very well, as you mentioned, but it has done so without any attention from the mainstream media.
Right, this is very important, by the way.
I just want to tell people, if I may say the number, you told it to me before, 150,000 copies.
Most of you, my listeners, do not know how big a number that is.
In order to make it onto the New York Times bestseller list, which is a fraudulent list, but nevertheless, 20,000 copies gets you on that list.

So that tells me something, how big the alternate media are.
Yep, and it's word of mouth, too, Dennis.
Here's the thing that upsets me, though.
We still don't see Republican politicians speaking out against wokeness.
You have people like J.D. Vance, who's running for Senate in Ohio.
He speaks out.
You have Marco Rubio and Josh Hawley, and sometimes Ted Cruz, they'll speak out.
But by and large, the Republican establishment is still keeping its own counsel.
I don't understand it.
You're really a kindred spirit.
Rod, I said for all of my life that there's a civil war, I said this 25 years ago, and the problem is only one side is fighting.
Yep.
Yep, that's true.
And the thing that I hope people who read Live Not By Lies will understand is that this is not going to be totalitarianism in the way that we're accustomed to with gulags, secret police, things like that.
This is so much more subtle.
You don't need the government to come in and put people in jail when you have big business, academia, the media, all of them working together to marginalize, to cancel, to sideline any critic.
That's what we're living through now.
It's a form of totalitarianism I call soft totalitarianism, but it is no less totalitarian for that.
And amazingly, I just want to say, because it's my column this week, is we are freer right now than virtually any Western country.
That's the irony.
With all of our movement toward tyranny, we are freer, certainly, than our neighbor to the North, Canada, where if you're not vaccinated, you can't board a plane.
Right.
We are the last best hope of the world in terms of freedom.
And that's scary when you see how far things have degenerated here.
Everything is relevant.
By the way, did they lock down Hungary?
I'm afraid they did.
I mean, that's one place that our friend Victor Orban, I say our friend, the guy we like, Victor Orban, he's not on board with you and me on this, and I regret that, but that's where he stands.
I was invited to the podcast of the son of Benjamin Netanyahu, Yair Netanyahu, in Israel by Zoom or by some other means.
In any event, I did it.
I mentioned this and he said, that meaning the COVID lockdowns and the vaccines, and he said that's the one area where we in Israel differ with conservatives in America.
So Hungary is not alone.
The last bastion is still America.

It clearly shows you being chased down by this deranged individual, corners you, all of it, HD, you know, this isn't, you know, behind the cars because, and this was always key that, you know, people who are looking at this never got, is that all the camera footage from that night was surface level.

Because it's handheld.
So, and of course, Richie thinks he has his camera going, but he doesn't.
And he's beating himself up over that.
But, you know, it happens in the heat of the moment that this thing is above, looking down, sees the whole thing.
You can actually see the anger and just, you know, insanity in Rosenbaum's face as he's chasing you.
That I don't think you show that face to anybody.
That they would think that this guy...

So girls were horribly abused, teenage girls, and the police and the authorities simply covered it up.
Well, this is now from just the last week, Times of London.
Police have been accused of failing the victims of grooming gangs after an investigation found that the force at the center of the Rotherham scandal that that was the place I don't know if I'm pronouncing the name correctly R-O-T-H-E-R-H-A-M Rotherham scandal was still not recording the ethnicities of suspected child abusers.
You hear that?
A secret intelligence report showed that South Yorkshire police were disregarding basic details of child sex offenders nearly a decade after the Times revealed widespread abuse in the town largely by men of Pakistani heritage.
In the 12 months To December 2019, officers in all four Yorkshire police districts routinely failed to log the ethnicity of those suspected of sexually abusing minors.
The highest failure rate was in the Rotherham District, where the ethnicity of 67% of suspects went unrecorded.
There you go.
Remember, we have very short memories because there's a bombardment of news every day.
So people forget almost everything.
One of my teachers said it was a bad idea to cram for tests because he had a great line, what goes into your brain fast goes out of your brain fast.
So that's what we have with the bombardment of news.
Things go in fast, but they leave fast.
But I remember some of these events.
Here's one I remember.
A German woman, young woman, not minor, but young woman, was raped.
I think gang raped.
She said to the authorities in Germany, I think I said she was a German girl, right?
She told the authorities that it was German men who did this, when in fact it was men from the Arab Middle East.
And she did that.
Her father was a big official in the European Union, and so she did it to protect...
The people who've come into Germany from the Middle East and North Africa from any antipathy on the part of the German people.
She lied about who raped her to protect the Muslim immigrants.
So this is...
This is the world of England, and this is a good example of what, in the name of protecting minorities, the amount of damage to society that is taking place, like the dropping of standards on exams in schools, to ensure equity.
The left is no longer interested in equality, but rather in equity.
Equity is not a moral ideal, by the way.
Equality is a moral ideal.
Equity means the results have to be equal.
No matter how much talent you have or work you put in, it doesn't matter.

Manhattan's progressive new DA, Alvin Bragg, just gave a green light for anarchy.
Yeah, it's my word for what the left wants.
People always ask, what is the endgame of the left?
It's a great question.
Not sure the left knows.
But the ultimate And is chaos.
It's a force for chaos.
I realized that when they came out with Men Give Birth.
Men Give Birth is a statement of chaos.
So with crime now, it's chaos.

If you can't do the time, Alvin Bragg will be there for you.
That much just became clear as the newly minted Manhattan DA issued marching orders to his hundreds of assistants and support staff.
Let's do our very best to keep people out of jail, kids, and let's really, really not sweat the small stuff.
Okay, Bragg didn't actually say that, But it pretty faithfully paraphrases the guts of a staff memo Bragg issued this Monday, the first business day of his four-year term.
Specifically, Bragg says his office, quote, will not seek a carceral sentence.
It's a new word to me, carceral, so the author explains it.
Carceral is progressive doublespeak for prison.
What is carceral?
Look it up.
No, it's not a food, Sean.
It's disturbing.
Any word Sean doesn't know he thinks is edible.
Specifically, Bragg says his office will not seek a carceral sentence for anything short of murder or deadly assault.
And he says minor crime won't be prosecuted at all.
In other words, jail is to be reserved for axe murderers and their ilk.
Armed robbers and heavyweight drug dealers.
Are to be minimally inconvenienced and just forget about the quality of life or law enforcement that was the beating heart of the Giuliani-era rescue of New York City decades ago.
Victims?
Let them hunker down and hope for the best.
No place for them in Manhattan anymore.
And Mayor Eric Adams can just forget about his oft-promised crackdown.
On the city's dangerously rising crime rates because there's no point in picking up criminals if you have no jail to put them in.
Yeah, I don't care about the pronunciation.
What does it say it means?

Bragg holds America's foremost local law enforcement office in terms of volume, influence, and prestige.
In other words, whatever it is that Soros has in mind, Bragg both owes him...
And is perfectly positioned to oblige him.
And on the grandest stage in America.

People voted for him, however.
Another distressing sign of our times when people vote in district attorneys that won't prosecute people unless they have murdered.
Or violently assaulted.
And then they're let out in many cases, in any event.
I'm keeping track.
I don't search, but if it comes up on some website, another murder, how often it is that the person has a rap sheet and they were let out by a district attorney or by a liberal judge.
And they never attend the funerals.
