Dennis Prager Show - Harvard Student Julie Hartman Recounts the Reaction to Her Appearance with Dennis Aired: 2021-05-27 Duration: 06:43 === Knew Better Than to Condone (04:16) === [00:00:00] Young woman here, she's going to be a senior at Harvard, and I witnessed truly a metamorphosis, a transformative moment, as I called it last segment, when she debated whether to come on my show and knew that she would have health to pay among her peers. [00:00:25] Young people want to be loved by peers. [00:00:28] Old people want to be loved by the New York Times. [00:00:32] People want to be loved by the wrong people. [00:00:36] Everybody likes being loved. [00:00:37] It's normal. [00:00:39] But if you're loved by unimpressive people, there's something unimpressive about you. [00:00:49] So, she knew, and she didn't know how bad it would be, as it turns out, and I'm learning that now. [00:00:56] Coming on my show, That would be known at her school, among peers, etc. [00:01:04] So, you said off the air that they were two of the toughest weeks of your life after you appeared on this show. [00:01:11] Yes. [00:01:12] You want to get our mic on there? [00:01:14] It was. [00:01:16] Yes. [00:01:16] Right. [00:01:17] Describe it in more detail. [00:01:22] Well, I think at that point, I really was... [00:01:27] I was at the beginning of my journey with conservatism. [00:01:30] So I found PragerU. [00:01:32] I read your books. [00:01:34] And I wasn't yet. [00:01:36] I have read so much more now. [00:01:38] Again, as I said last segment, I'm so much more comfortable in my conservatism. [00:01:42] But then I was just kind of at the beginning of it. [00:01:44] So I didn't really have the tools to kind of come back at people in the way that I do now. [00:01:52] People were just so unkind. [00:01:55] Interestingly, when I saw the YouTube video, a lot of the people commenting on the video were actually really lovely, like a lot of your listeners, which I'm very, very grateful for. [00:02:06] They say that people on the internet are so terrible. [00:02:08] They actually were really lovely to me. [00:02:10] It was the people in my life, interestingly. [00:02:13] It was the people who I went to school with or who had... [00:02:17] I had gone to school with or played on a sports, you know, it was those people that gave me the toughest time. [00:02:24] And, you know, I'm a good person. [00:02:26] I don't want to hurt other people's feelings. [00:02:28] And it was so hard because people were, they weren't just saying that they disagreed with me. [00:02:34] They were saying that I was condoning and supporting bigotry. [00:02:38] And, you know, it started to get to me. [00:02:42] And I look back and I go, Julie, how did, you know. [00:02:45] You should have just blocked out the noise. [00:02:47] You knew you were not doing anything wrong. [00:02:49] But when you have such a crowd of people telling you that you are doing something so wrong, I think as any good person would, you just look inside yourself and you go, okay, did I? But again, I had a friend who said to me, Julie, you are doing what a college kid is supposed to be doing. [00:03:14] Again, you are seeking out new perspectives. [00:03:18] You are learning. [00:03:19] You are evolving. [00:03:20] You're not just catering to the party line or what you've been taught. [00:03:26] You're seeking out different perspectives. [00:03:28] And that is what pulled me out of it. [00:03:30] Because I thought, you're right. [00:03:32] You're totally right. [00:03:33] I'm doing what any college kid is supposed to be doing. [00:03:36] Out of curiosity, I'm interested on a personal level and obviously on a larger level. [00:03:43] Did you actually confront any of those who attacked you for coming on the show? [00:03:47] Yes, I did. [00:03:48] I did. [00:03:49] And did you ask any of them, do you have evidence to support your saying that Dennis Prager is a bigot? [00:03:57] Well, they would point to things like your opposition gay marriage or your pro-life policy. === Why They Dismiss Us (02:42) === [00:04:04] And to them, that is very, very bigoted. [00:04:07] I happen to see it differently. [00:04:08] I think that you have – I may disagree with you on some of those issues, but I think you have very principled stances on them. [00:04:14] But they – here's the thing. [00:04:16] If you just have a different policy perspective, they're immediately going to brand that as bigoted. [00:04:22] They're not even going to listen to what your reasoning for that is. [00:04:26] They're just going to dismiss you. [00:04:28] And that's what I really learned. [00:04:29] Because sometimes arguing with these people, what I've noticed is there are some people who just don't fundamentally understand conservatives. [00:04:37] I fell into that camp before I found you. [00:04:40] But then there are other people who blindfold themselves. [00:04:44] They don't want to understand why conservatives have these arguments. [00:04:50] It's not just that they see us as villains, but they need to see us as villains. [00:04:55] It's intrinsic to their worldview. [00:04:57] That's why you often say that leftism is a religion of sorts to these people. [00:05:02] It's true, because they confect these mythologies about conservatives. [00:05:07] They refuse to see that they can have a... [00:05:10] Opinions that are not rooted in bigotry. [00:05:13] They see us as the satanic figures, and they see themselves as the messianic figures. [00:05:18] It's very bizarre. [00:05:20] They cannot accept that you have certain opinions that are not rooted in bigotry. [00:05:26] It's unbelievable. [00:05:27] It's really shocking. [00:05:30] It's so interesting because the left has historically argued that they're nuanced. [00:05:38] And we're not. [00:05:40] I know. [00:05:40] We're Manichean, and they're not. [00:05:43] But it's all inverted. [00:05:46] They are Manichean. [00:05:48] The world is divided between light and dark, and we're dark. [00:05:52] That's why you can't... [00:05:55] See, there is no left-wing show. [00:05:58] If there was a show called We Hate America, I would appear on it. [00:06:04] I would be thrilled to appear. [00:06:07] On a left-wing show. [00:06:09] But they don't want to appear on our shows. [00:06:13] Why is that? [00:06:15] No, I'm serious. [00:06:16] Why is that? [00:06:17] I really think... [00:06:19] Well, they'll say because, you know, they don't even want to give a voice to bigotry. [00:06:22] That's their classic response. [00:06:23] But what it really is, is they don't want to debate you. [00:06:26] That's right. [00:06:27] They know they don't have the ammo to do it. [00:06:31] They don't have the ammo to do it. [00:06:34] And they don't have truth on their side. [00:06:37] Well, it is one joy to have you on our side. [00:06:42] Thank you.
