Dennis Prager Show - How do I Announce to my Colleagues that I'm Conservative? Aired: 2020-09-11 Duration: 03:47 === Socially Ostracized (03:44) === [00:00:02] Well, you shouldn't even use blacklisted. [00:00:05] That alone would render you fired. [00:00:08] Just the term itself, right? [00:00:10] Blacklisted is a negative, and it has the word black in it. [00:00:13] But you would be ostracized socially, clearly. [00:00:22] Are you ostracized socially now, or do they have no clue as to how you think? [00:00:28] They have absolutely no clue. [00:00:31] I mean, I keep my head down. [00:00:33] So you are truly what I call a Murano. [00:00:36] You're like the Jews in medieval Spain who acted Catholic and practiced Judaism at home. [00:00:41] You are this modern Murano. [00:00:46] Well, if it helps, I'm an art teacher, so it's even rarer than that. [00:00:49] That's right. [00:00:51] In your profession. [00:00:53] So, are you married? [00:00:57] I am. [00:00:58] Does your wife share your values? [00:01:01] And she's a teacher too. [00:01:05] What percentage of teachers do you think are in your position? [00:01:12] You know, it's hard to say because I really do think there's a lot of groupthink. [00:01:16] On this side of the river where I live, I do think that there's a lot of people who just kind of keep their heads down or, you know, it's just not something that they talk about at work. [00:01:26] Today alone, there were two or three people who had mentioned Trump. [00:01:29] Ugh, it's Trump and Trump. [00:01:30] It's like, I don't feel safe to have any conversation there that's actually meaningful. [00:01:35] And if I just don't nod my head and agree, I do feel like I'll be personally ostracized. [00:01:46] Well, you have to, and I'm not telling you what to do. [00:01:50] It's not right for me to. [00:01:52] Because I don't have the same situation as you. [00:01:55] I'm hated by many people, but I don't have a threat to my work. [00:02:01] At a given point, you just have to figure out what you can do without being fired and then ask, can I handle the ostracization and hate? [00:02:22] Because you will find allies that you didn't know you had. [00:02:26] I just want you to know that they do exist. [00:02:30] I have friends in the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, the last orchestra in the country you would imagine it would be okay to state that you're a conservative. [00:02:42] And they have been bold about it. [00:02:45] Their colleagues don't like their views, but they're doing okay. [00:02:52] It's something you have to weigh. [00:02:54] I will just say this. [00:02:57] I can handle being hated. [00:03:00] I'm not sure I can handle being fired because I want you to have an income. [00:03:07] So if I were him, if I were he to be actually correct grammatically, I would speak out. [00:03:22] In as non-emotional, non-adjectival, fact-based way as possible, and then see what happens. [00:03:38] But I'm not telling him to do that. [00:03:40] I'm only saying what I think I would do, but I certainly would not want to get fired.
