Looters Are NOT Happy People - The Happiness Hour
| Copy link to current segment

Time Text
Happiness is a big factor in determining how people will, in fact, behave.
Happiness is a moral virtue.
Remember, that is the underlying theme of my book on happiness, Happiness is a Serious Problem, and my lectures, and, of course, this hour each week.
Because the happy do make the world better.
When you are unhappy, you have two basic choices.
Thank you.
You can blame others or you can Well, I guess you have three choices.
You can blame others, you can blame life, or you can blame yourself.
And obviously, depending on the situation, I mean, if you are in a concentration camp, you have the right to blame others.
Americans are not in concentration camps, so that is obviously not a viable analogy for what happens here.
But in America, to blame America where the vast majority of people are truly free and not oppressed is There's no possible way for you to attain happiness unless your happiness comes from nihilism.
And it's an interesting question.
Were the people kicking in Macy's windows in Manhattan, were they happy when they were doing it?
The odds are that they were.
It probably brought them some sort of adrenaline rush.
But it's not happy people who are doing it.
I mean, right?
I mean the idea is an absurdity.
God, I really love life.
I enjoy life.
I have wonderful friends and family.
And now I'm going to smash windows at Macy's.
Right?
I mean, it's a little absurd.
In fact, I think most of us don't even assume that they have a family that brings them any joy.
That's a two-fold issue.
They don't have a family, period, and if they have a family, it doesn't bring them joy.
By not having family, I don't mean parents, I mean a wife and children.
Usually it's men doing the kingdom, but a lot of women were participating.
In fact, women may have outnumbered men in some of these instances.
Not in the smashing of the windows, I guess, in the protests, which I fully acknowledge is a different dimension, the protests and the violence.
I am not equating them in any way.
But I didn't want to sound like I was excluding women from the equation.
But in most cases of the violence, I suspect it was males.
Anyway, I... Don't think that they have these guys.
I don't think they went home to a loving wife and kids.
Remember, generally speaking, marriage has civilized men.
Women and men need to work on their natures.
Men on their proclivity to violence.
and sexual predatory behavior and women on the power of their emotions.
We each have to work on our natures.
America has done a great job, for the most part, of having men marry, settle down, have children, And in the days before the nihilism of the 60s and 70s began,
and now we are seeing their fruits, we had programs like Father Knows Best, which of course is mocked beyond recognition by these people.
And with all of its corniness, it was a beautiful thing.
To see the parents simply love each other, respect each other, and the kids respect their father.
Respecting your father is a huge element in how decent you will be as you grow up.
Huge.
Not loving your father.
That's a bonus.
Respecting your father.
So this happiness hour is dedicated to the issue of the happy make the world better and the unhappy make it worse.
