Dennis Prager Show - Carolla, the First Comedian Out of Lockdown⎜The Dennis Prager Radio Show Aired: 2020-05-12 Duration: 08:40 === Guiding Voices Anonymously (02:58) === [00:00:00] You know, I find this word very difficult, Adam. [00:00:03] Star. [00:00:04] I can't tell you how I don't think of myself as a star. [00:00:09] But is there a better verb for what you and I are in no safe spaces? [00:00:16] I think we're... [00:00:18] Guides. [00:00:19] We're the... [00:00:20] The guides. [00:00:21] We guide you through this movie and through this journey. [00:00:24] And don't worry about being labeled star. [00:00:27] Most of America wouldn't argue with you. [00:00:29] That's very sweet. [00:00:31] Okay. [00:00:32] Anyway, we co-star in this movie, but of course, Adam Carolla is the most downloaded podcast. [00:00:41] Is that correct? [00:00:41] The Guinness Book of World Records. [00:00:42] Still in the Guinness Book. [00:00:44] For good reason. [00:00:46] I hear your voice. [00:00:48] My stepson is one of your billions of fans. [00:00:52] Not billions. [00:00:53] Hundreds of millions. [00:00:54] And so I hear you a lot. [00:00:58] I come home. [00:00:59] I hear you. [00:01:01] We all love you at the Prager family. [00:01:04] Adam Carolla is one of the great, if not the greatest. [00:01:08] Do you like the term comedian? [00:01:11] Yeah, I'm fine with it. [00:01:13] You know, my... [00:01:14] We always talk about this on and off the air, probably. [00:01:17] People say, what do you like? [00:01:19] You like podcasting? [00:01:20] You like stand-up? [00:01:21] You like writing books? [00:01:22] You like making movies? [00:01:23] And I say, I like putting my ideas into your head. [00:01:26] That's all I want to do. [00:01:28] God, are we kindred spirits? [00:01:29] And I sort of like the anonymous part of it. [00:01:32] Or not the anonymous part, but I never really liked the scripted TV version of putting my ideas in your head because it's more difficult. [00:01:40] There's makeup and there's lighting and there's everything else. [00:01:43] The intimacy of someone physically now wearing earbuds or headset and listening to our voices, literally putting the voice into their head. [00:01:54] You know, when I used to do terrestrial radio and people would listen to it in their cars or on their nightstand or wherever the radio was, it was being projected via speaker. [00:02:06] But now, in this modern ear where you're putting the buds in your ears, there's literally no... [00:02:12] Space between your voice and their brain. [00:02:15] Right. [00:02:16] That's fascinating. [00:02:17] That's true. [00:02:19] So, by the way, during this quarantine, we've been watching some movies, and we watched another one. [00:02:28] I've watched three of your films. [00:02:30] The Carr film. [00:02:32] What is the name of that? [00:02:33] Well, I have three films. [00:02:36] No, there's one I haven't seen. [00:02:38] Well, I'll just... [00:02:39] Shoot them down here. [00:02:41] Shoot them out. [00:02:41] On Netflix, we have the Paul Newman Racing Doc. === Carroll Shelby's Journey (05:57) === [00:02:47] It's a movie about Paul Newman. [00:02:49] It was great. [00:02:49] There's the 24-hour war, which is the story of Le Mans, the 24 hours of Le Mans, Ford v. [00:02:54] Ferrari. [00:02:55] That one's a good one. [00:02:57] There's Carroll Shelby. [00:02:59] The thing that I think you would find interesting about the Carroll Shelby story, legendary racer, won Le Mans, made the Cobra, came back with Ford. [00:03:07] If you see Ford v. [00:03:08] Ferrari, Matt Damon is Carroll Shelby. [00:03:11] Think about this concept. [00:03:12] Carroll Shelby started his shop, his first shop in like 1965, Venice Beach, California. [00:03:20] Carroll Shelby is from Texas. [00:03:22] He hails from Texas. [00:03:24] He came to Los Angeles. [00:03:27] to have the freedom to do his thing. [00:03:31] Can you imagine a time where you start in Texas? [00:03:35] I mean, he's a Texan. [00:03:37] And go to California for freedom. [00:03:38] And he wanted to go to Venice Beach, California, so he could do his own thing, so he could open a shop and build cars. [00:03:46] Could you imagine going to Venice Beach, California, and attempting to open a shop to build cars, where you have to paint the cars and all the transmission fluids and oils and all? [00:03:56] Could you imagine how difficult that would be today? [00:04:00] Yes. [00:04:00] I don't have to imagine. [00:04:03] So that is... [00:04:04] Look... [00:04:05] I'm sorry. [00:04:06] I got on a tangent. [00:04:08] No, no. [00:04:08] Let me just go on that tangent for one moment. [00:04:13] Young people today, not even young, I would say even under 40, do not know what America was like when it was truly free. [00:04:22] I have a... [00:04:24] Even I have... [00:04:26] It's an early memory, but I remember it. [00:04:32] And there was a lightness. [00:04:35] That's what it is. [00:04:36] There was a lightness to American life. [00:04:38] Today it is heavy. [00:04:39] Yeah, I put a tweet out, I think about a day ago, that's gotten, I don't know, 1.4 million looks on... [00:04:48] It was a tweet. [00:04:49] It said, somebody's told me, Gavin Newsom says California won't... [00:04:55] Get back to normal until we find a vaccine. [00:04:58] And I wrote, California hasn't been normal in 20 years. [00:05:02] That's right. [00:05:03] And it's more than 20. But, I mean, it was relatively normal 20 years ago. [00:05:08] It is not. [00:05:09] This notion of we're going to get back, get back to what? [00:05:13] That's right, the control. [00:05:15] More of your movies. [00:05:17] So, The 24-Hour War, The Newman Doc, Carroll Shelby, Shelby American. [00:05:23] Is what it's called. [00:05:25] Uppity, first black race driver at Indianapolis. [00:05:28] That's my next one. [00:05:28] Yeah, that's my next one. [00:05:30] That one is being, people are giving some nice notices for that one. [00:05:35] I made a movie called The Hammer. [00:05:36] It's about a boxer. [00:05:37] And I made a movie called Road Hard. [00:05:39] That's what we just saw, Road Hard. [00:05:42] Why do you make movies like The Hammer and Road Hard in which you're somewhat of a loser? [00:05:50] It's easier to be likable and it's easier to be funny, I think, if you're coming from that world. [00:05:57] Oh, interesting. [00:05:57] And I do see, when I look in the mirror, I do see the loser. [00:06:03] I don't see the winner. [00:06:06] I've always been that way. [00:06:08] I had a feeling that it was more than it's a good way to get good lines out. [00:06:15] For example, in Road Hard, Your character gives up comedy to live with a woman you fall in love with in a rural area. [00:06:29] Was it Tennessee? [00:06:30] I think it was like Vermont or some area. [00:06:32] You're right, it was. [00:06:33] It was Vermont or New Hampshire, right. [00:06:36] Your kid went to school in New Hampshire. [00:06:39] Something like that. [00:06:40] Is there a part of you in that at all? [00:06:45] You know, maybe I'd just be happier without the limelight. [00:06:50] Yeah, I don't really look at myself as in the limelight, but I do look at myself as someone who has to go out and generate every day. [00:07:00] And there's a part of me that thinks sometimes, hey, just sell all Paul Newman's race cars in a couple of your warehouses and just go somewhere to Texas and put your feet up and learn to fish. [00:07:11] And I am going to Texas, by the way, to do stand-up. [00:07:15] I'm actually going to be... [00:07:16] Probably the first comedian to travel. [00:07:20] That's going to be the 21st, I think. [00:07:22] Of what? [00:07:23] May. [00:07:23] It's coming a week from Thursday. [00:07:25] So they will allow people into the theater? [00:07:29] They are opening the clubs. [00:07:32] They're going to open them to like 50% capacity. [00:07:35] Right. [00:07:37] And they're going to do whatever the safe distancing and whatever the regulations are. [00:07:41] But I'm going to go out there. [00:07:42] I'm going to do a bunch of shows at the Houston Improv. [00:07:45] I'm going to bring Dan Crenshaw up on stage with me and do a live podcast. [00:07:50] So we'll be doing live podcasts and stand-up. [00:07:53] And I'm just going to donate all the money to the Houston Food Bank. [00:07:57] But I'm still traveling for selfish reasons because I'm going to get a haircut and a steak when I go to Houston. [00:08:06] I may even do it at the same time. [00:08:09] I'm that committed. [00:08:15] That's an image. [00:08:17] I think you should, by the way, and put it up on your website. [00:08:21] I'm definitely looking. [00:08:22] Of you having a steak and getting a haircut at the same time. [00:08:25] I cannot wait. [00:08:27] That is such a great point. [00:08:30] Well, when we get back, we're going to talk about the lockdown and so on and how you react to it. [00:08:38] Oh, I have thoughts. [00:08:39] Yes, I know you do.
