Dennis Prager Show - Man's Search for Meaning Aired: 2020-02-04 Duration: 06:26 === The Drive for Meaning (05:54) === [00:00:00] After food, meaning is the thing the human being most wants. [00:00:05] It's true for everyone. [00:00:07] It's universal. [00:00:08] It is more powerful a drive than sex. [00:00:12] That's how important the drive for meaning is. [00:00:16] The problem is, it is completely amoral. [00:00:21] Meaning can be gotten through evil as much as through good. [00:00:28] Right? [00:00:29] Think about it. [00:00:31] Nazism gave Nazis meaning. [00:00:33] Communism gave Communists meaning. [00:00:37] So, you know, helping the dead and the dying in Calcutta gave Mother Teresa meaning. [00:00:48] So that's good meaning versus bad meaning. [00:00:52] Meaning is neutral. [00:00:53] So that's the question to be asked. [00:00:57] With the death of religion, People have still yearned for meaning. [00:01:02] Leftism is the search for meaning in a post-Christian world. [00:01:08] That's it in a nutshell. [00:01:10] And they have the same fervor as religious people do. [00:01:17] That's why all of their battles are existential. [00:01:21] For Frank Rich in New York Magazine, Stopping Donald Trump is an existential issue. [00:01:28] That's his word, existential. [00:01:30] You can't bat bigger than existential. [00:01:33] Existential comes from the word existence. [00:01:36] America's existence is threatened by Donald Trump. [00:01:40] A lot of Americans believe that because they need meaning. [00:01:45] What could be more meaningful than saving America from Donald Trump? [00:01:50] The only thing more meaningful than that is saving the world from global warming. [00:01:54] That is one of the beauties of being on the left. [00:01:56] You're always saving something. [00:01:59] Saving the seal, saving the whale, saving the white rhinoceros, saving America, saving the world. [00:02:10] That's pretty, that's pretty, that really gives your life meaning and that's satisfying. [00:02:17] That's why you can't argue with them. [00:02:22] It's truly like arguing with a religious person about the deepest aspect of their faith. [00:02:30] It's not, and by the way, it's totally understandable. [00:02:32] It's not an argument. [00:02:34] You're going to argue with me? [00:02:36] I believe God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. [00:02:38] You're going to argue with me? [00:02:39] It'd be silly. [00:02:40] It's my faith that that happened. [00:02:44] But I acknowledge it's my faith. [00:02:48] Leftists think it's true. [00:02:50] Leftists think that, I think it's true that Moses got the Ten Commandments, but I know it's faith. [00:02:56] Leftists have faith, but they think it's rational and true. [00:03:02] That it's reason-based only. [00:03:06] Isn't it obvious that the Australian fires were set by global warming? [00:03:12] No, it's not obvious. [00:03:14] Not if you care about truth. [00:03:16] But if what you hold is faith, It's not an arguable issue. [00:03:22] Donald Trump is an existential threat to democracy. [00:03:25] How exactly? [00:03:26] They don't have an answer. [00:03:29] Because it's a statement of meaning and faith. [00:03:34] It's faith-based that Donald Trump is a threat to democracy. [00:03:38] I don't care if you hate him. [00:03:39] I care if you lie about his being a threat to democracy. [00:03:43] You can hate him all you like. [00:03:44] It means nothing to me. [00:03:48] That it means something to me if you lie that he's a threat to democracy. [00:03:53] How's he the threat to democracy when the Democrats won the midterm elections? [00:03:58] He did a pretty poor job. [00:04:02] It's like the anti-Semites about the Jews. [00:04:05] They control the world. [00:04:06] Really? [00:04:06] So how come they get exterminated? [00:04:08] They're doing a lousy job controlling the world and they keep getting exterminated. [00:04:16] To the haters, reason means nothing. [00:04:19] And the left is a hate-filled place. [00:04:22] Hate-filled. [00:04:23] Look at how they treated Brett Kavanaugh. [00:04:25] They're hate-filled people leftists. [00:04:30] They speak the language of kindness. [00:04:32] It's a veneer. [00:04:34] It's a disguise of the meanness at their heart. [00:04:38] What they did to Brett Kavanaugh shows what scum they are. [00:04:42] And that's what awakened Lindsey Graham. [00:04:44] Lindsey Graham was a changed man because he saw his colleagues acting as scum. [00:04:51] If you defend the way Brett Kavanaugh was treated, you're a lowlife. [00:04:55] I'm sorry, you are. [00:04:57] You should do penitence. [00:04:59] You should look in the mirror. [00:05:00] You should ask yourself, how could a good man be so lied about and I support it? [00:05:08] How could you do that? [00:05:12] Peggy Noonan wrote a very interesting piece in the Wall Street Journal on Friday. [00:05:18] It was about Kobe Bryant and the woman at the Washington Post who tweeted out about the rape charge against Kobe Bryant the day after he died. [00:05:29] And she rightly noted, you know, the man's body is basically still burning, and it's not what you write about. [00:05:38] And she was right. === People Define By Worst Actions (00:46) === [00:05:40] And then she wrote a very interesting line in her piece. [00:05:43] She said, what's happening in America is people are now defined by, solely defined by the worst thing they ever did. [00:05:53] That's what the left does. [00:05:54] The left defines only its opponents, not people they agree with. [00:05:59] People they agree with, everything's forgivable. [00:06:02] Like Ted Kennedy. [00:06:04] Yes, exactly. [00:06:07] And... [00:06:08] That's the way they do it. [00:06:09] Oh, you did this? [00:06:11] Placido Domingo has done so much for so many people, and the L.A. opera has fired him, and all the operas have fired him. [00:06:18] He's one of the greatest singers in the world because he harassed some women, or at least he's charged with it, over the course of a lifetime.
