Dennis Prager Show - Open Lines: Dennis on the Seriousness of Suicide Aired: 2020-01-18 Duration: 04:53 === Females and Suicide Attempts (04:52) === [00:00:00] And I asked you what she tried. [00:00:03] You know, I mean, I'm sure you know, but many of our listeners may not. [00:00:09] Females try to commit suicide far more often than males, but males actually commit suicide far more often than females. [00:00:18] For females, it is usually a cry out of pain rather than a real, real attempt to kill oneself. [00:00:28] Thank God. [00:00:29] I mean, that's the last thing we would want. [00:00:32] So the obvious question is, what does she say was the reason? [00:00:40] Well, there's like, it's a real vague stuff. [00:00:45] You know what I mean? [00:00:45] It's like she feels sad all the time, disconnected from reality, and people don't like her. [00:00:54] But that's where I have to check myself because my... [00:00:58] My own view of it is like, I'm judging what she's saying because they sound superficial to me and it's stupid for me to do that, but I had a really hard childhood and she's had, you know, like, maybe it's wrong of me to look at it like that. [00:01:18] No, no, you are allowed to look at it in any way that conforms with reality. [00:01:26] It doesn't solve the problem, but I don't want you to change your perception of reality because of what's happened. [00:01:35] Does she love you or your wife, presuming you're living together? [00:01:44] Yeah, we're really good parents, and I can say that for a fact. [00:01:49] No, I believe you. [00:01:53] Does the issue of the pain that she would cause you ever arise in discussion? [00:02:01] That's just it. [00:02:02] Like, we started therapy through our insurance. [00:02:05] And, you know, when you don't have a lot of money, you go through things and you don't get the best of stuff. [00:02:11] And it's already been brought up a few times about pills. [00:02:14] And, you know, you brought this up, Dennis, earlier this week or late last week. [00:02:19] I can't remember about an article about somebody writing about... [00:02:23] It's on the rise with teenagers and stuff. [00:02:25] And you said that they don't talk about God. [00:02:28] And I agree with that. [00:02:30] And I feel guilty for that because I haven't been to church in like 10 years. [00:02:35] So I feel like maybe it's some of my responsibility because I don't want her to take pills. [00:02:41] I don't think they're... [00:02:43] I think they're lame. [00:02:44] I tried them when I was young and they don't work. [00:02:47] Well, look, it is a real issue that... [00:02:51] Kids today don't have anything to believe in. [00:02:55] They don't have America. [00:02:56] They don't have religion. [00:03:00] They don't have God. [00:03:03] And all they're told is how terrible their society is from its origins and how terrible their future is because the world may not even exist as they get older. [00:03:15] The left has ruined the childhood. [00:03:19] Of vast numbers of American children because everything the left touches it ruins and childhood is one more example. [00:03:28] Yes, I agree. [00:03:29] That's true. [00:03:30] Well, listen, I don't know if I said a single word that helps you, but I do believe that it is important for her to know the pain it would cause others. [00:03:47] And it's not too late to try to bring into her life, and all of you, to bring into your children's lives things to believe in. [00:03:58] Social justice isn't going to fill the vacuum. [00:04:00] For real leftists, it does. [00:04:03] The vacuum left in a post-Judeo-Christian world, post-American world. [00:04:09] That is filled by, I'm going to save the world against fossil fuels. [00:04:14] That's all it's about. [00:04:16] It's not because it's rational. [00:04:18] It's because it fills the vacuum of meaning caused by secular society. [00:04:27] These are secular religions. [00:04:32] Tom Steyer is as fanatical as the most fanatical Christian or Jew or Muslim living or whoever lived. [00:04:41] There is a zero difference. [00:04:46] The human being needs to believe in something. [00:04:50] It is the greatest need after food.
